News::Shacknews: Gauntlet review - Quintessential dungeon crawling

Gauntlet is about as straightforward as it gets when it comes to being a dungeon crawling RPG. You gather together with three other people, either locally or online (or a mix) to shoot, bash, and fireball a sea of monsters coming at you, all while collecting treasure along the way. But the game quickly progresses past its presentation, and much like a group of players coming together, becomes something greater.

News::Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor Review | GameRevolution

GR: In the pantheon of video gaming, there isnt much like riding around an open-world without consequence of law or rule enforcement or even the recklessness of any attempt I might have at completing a Tony Hawks Pro Skater line in real life. So it gave me great pleasure in mounting one of Middle-earths Caragors, bulldog-like beasts with vicious teeth capable of tearing the hide of an unlucky Uruk. Thankfully, the world presented in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is littered with enemies of the orc variety.

News::Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor meta-review: the hype machine finally pays out

Destinys disappointing lack of innovation left many soured by the empty promise of next-generation gaming. Why did a game, so hyped and costly end up being a monotonous grind-fest with almost no semblance of story? While Destiny wasnt the game many had thought it would be (it was essentially a tarted-up MMO), Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is. The reviews are in and it turns out that Shadow of Mordor is one of the best, and possibly funnest game of 2014. Heres what the experts have to say:

News::Destiny's Loot Cave is fixed, but a deeper shame remains

Dealspwn: "I'm not talking about the loot system, flawed and cynical as it is. Yes, the randomisation of Engrams feels deeply unsatisfying. Yes, the Light system is idiotic. Yes, the game revolves around a roulette wheel, even though the raw shooting mechanics are very fine indeed. But that's all a symptom of a more shameful issue. Consider the basic fact again: players were willingly spending hours shooting at a hole in the ground."

The Gauntlet we have today has little in common with its predecessor, but is a brilliant revival nonetheless. News::The Chapel of Light: Proof Positive That ESO Is A Gorgeous Looking Game

Skyrim Fansite writes: One of the things thats always impressed me about The Elder Scrolls Online is the amount of detail and beauty found throughout the game. From the swamps of Shadowfen to the cold forests of Eastmarch, the game designers did a fantastic job creating an amazing world full of light and color. For me, the one building that stands as the crowning achievement of the games beauty is the Chapel of Light found in Cold Harbours Hollow City. The Chapel of Light is impressive during the day, with its towering height and Gothic architecture. In the evening though, the building transforms into something truly special with its gigantic stained glass windows, lit up in an array of dazzling color for all of Nirn to see. Take a look at the following screen shots and see if you dont agree.

News::Riots Latest Decree: Valid Action or Abuse of Power?

John Wyma, GIZORAMA - "Though someone will inevitably try, its hard to argue the fact that maintaining an online presence in the gaming community comes with a bit of responsibility. Like any communal gathering, we gamers are held to a modified version of Rousseaus Social Contract, and for the most part, the population gladly complies. Joining a server simply to be told your mother was a woman of ill repute is not how one wishes to start a match, and luckily the grand majority agrees and acts accordingly. However, as Ive stated previously, within any population sample lies the few outliers who just want to watch the world burn (Michael Cain, you glorious bastard). These contract offenders, known as trolls to anyone online since the early 2000s, have made their presence felt within the gaming world, and while some companies are striking back and taking action, lines must be drawn between team players and psychotic sadists, moderators and dictators, and what should be done versus...

From Strategyinformer.com: "When all's said and told, the sad truth is that Rome 2 was a bit of a mess. Just as the Huns arrived to sweep away the decadent remnants of the Roman Empire, Creative Assembly is hoping that Attila will banish the disappointment of Rome 2 with a refined engine, reworked mechanics and a new take on the familiar Total War grand campaign".

News::Civilization: Beyond Earth makes weekends disappear

The Civilization series is famous for playing out in unplanned marathon sessions, where "one more turn" quickly turns into five more turns, which turn into another hour, before the player finally looks away from the screen to see that it is starting to get light outside. Knowing this, I'm not sure what I was thinking starting the preview build of Civilization: Beyond Earth on a Friday night.

By the time I finished for that session, I had played for eight hours straight and it was then four in the morning. Then I went to sleep, woke up four hours later, and started playing again, eventually logging almost a full day's worth of play time in a single weekend.

Yes, this is still Civilization through and through, but there are some new concepts included that impact gameplay in significant ways. Though there are clear connections, Beyond Earth is far more than just a reskinning of Civilization V.
