News::Ah, so that's where those silly Madden GIFs are coming from

I don't care at all about Madden, but GIFs? Damn you, Electronic Arts. You've won.

The company has created a GIF maker for Madden NFL 15, "designed to help fans celebrate their favorite team's biggest plays and challenge their rivals." Looking over submissions in the real-time stream, most of us didn't get the memo or simply aren't listening.

Let's see what you've got! Also, be sure to watch those glitch GIFs if you missed 'em.

Hope You're Not Sick Of Movies About Fighting Giant Monsters

If you saw sleeper 2010 hit Monsters, you'll know that despite being about a giant...monster, you don't actually see much of it. It's very quiet, very tense. Four years later the movie has a sequel, and that soft approach has gone right out the window.

News::Help infect Raccoon City for free Resident Evil HD content

Capcom is promising "free additional content" for the Resident Evil remaster if we collectively manage to spread the T-Virus throughout Raccoon City, which isn't nearly as cool as it sounds.

Really, there's just a website with a map of the city, and the epidemic grows as more people register their email, Facebook, or Capcom account. Bit of a missed opportunity. At the time of writing, the contagion is already at 30 percent -- so it shouldn't be too much longer now.

I do like the Activity feed. "Mr. Two-Disc was infected at Warren Stadium."

We Made Some Really Stupid Madden GIFs, And So Can You

For some reason, EA thought it would be a good idea to let the internet make GIFs using Madden player models. They made a site for it and everything, underwritten by the NFL, NFLPA, and Google. We spent 15 minutes trying to make them regret it. Here's what we came up with, but we're sure you criminals can do better.

News::If you ever get to play Upsilon Circuit, the world will be watching

At PAX Prime, I got my first and what could be only opportunity to try Upsilon Circuit.

You see, once it goes live, eight people will be able to play at any given time. That's eight people, total. And the "permadeath" here is actually permanent. You lose? Your turn is done.

While everyone else watches, waiting for their coveted chance in the spotlight to hack away at monsters and explore, they can directly influence the direction the game takes. The audience has control to, say, spec out players' skill trees, or spawn a deadly trap.

Legend of Dungeon creator Robot Loves Kitty is billing this as part online game show, part action-RPG. At PAX, I saw more of the latter than the former, but Upsilon Circuit's Max Headroom-esque digital host Ronny Raygon was set up on a nearby television to talk smack to attendees. He got into an argument with some kid about whose glasses were cooler.

Before you ask who would pay for something like this -- for a chance, maybe, to play once -- know that it's going to be free. In speaking with Robot Loves Kitty's Alix Stolzer, it sounds as if a large part of the monetization will be geared toward trolls or audience members who otherwise want to screw over the player characters, not help out. I told her that was a good idea.

It's still early days for Upsilon Circuit and there are a lot of unknowns, but what was shown at PAX gave me confidence in this somewhat crazy, definitely ambitious project. If the game catches on and finds a stable audience, it's going to be a fascinating experiment to take part in.

NWR: "Before I picked up my GamePad, I'd never heard of Cubemen 2. News::Cities: Skyline is out to satisfy where SimCity couldn't

There's something of a size mismatch happening here. Colossal Order tells me it can give its players 36 square kilometres of space to build their cities in, 36 square kilometres in which they can expand and enlarge, spread and sprawl. That's enough space for suburbs, commuter towns and even arable land. In contrast, last year's SimCity only provided a couple of square kilometres and, in spite of the efforts of all the pages of team members listed in its credits (a number possibly higher if you consider that credits often only list staff present when a title ships), what happened within those city limits didn't always make sense. Colossal Order is confident it can make a larger, more coherent and more customisable city-building game with, well... nine people.

News::Dead Island 2 PAX impressions

Having only seen Dead Island 2 and not played it yet, I'm in agreement with Max here. It does look like a decent-enough zombie game, and a much better take on the property than Riptide .. but it's still Dead Island. There comes a point at which you've simply had enough.

The southern California setting and warm tones are lovely, though. Big fan of those.
