News::Depression Quest: lets talk about mental health

Depression Quest is an exploration into depression that aims to help combat the stigma surrounding it through the medium of videogames. For Jose Cardoso, playing it was a particularly personal experience, and he spoke to the games creator Zoe Quinn to learn more about the empathy simulator.

News::Taito's Crime Connection wants your phone's contact info

Crime Connection, the latest iOS and Android title from Square Enix subsidiary Taito, is a free-to-play "social crime simulation" in the style of Mafia Wars. There is a serious caveat to the game, however, and I'm not talking about microtransactions or its use of the GREE app platform. In order to play the game, you have to agree to share your phone's contact information.

By agreeing, you allow Square Enix to access your contacts, voice mail, call history, and email. For what purpose, it isn't clear. Taking that risk of putting your private information out in the public isn't worth a free game, if you ask me. What do you guys think? Do you take the time to read agreements?

News::Our Batman: Arkham Origins Wishlist

OXM - Like any diehard Caped Crusader fan, I'm a teensy bit excited for Batman: Arkham Origins. So excited in fact, I've made a list of seven improvements or additions I'd like to see come the game's release on 25th October. Point eight was just going to be 'BatcaveBATCAVEbatcaveBATCAVE' typed over and over again, but in an uncharacteristic display of I willpower, I refrained. Thought of any improvements of your own? Let's talk it out in the comments below.

News::Cram this Dark Souls II trailer into your dark holes

It's been Dark Souls II day at Destructoid, as we finally got to see it in action in footage, screens, and in person. Now, Namco Bandai presents this gloomy teaser ("Despair") that shows off some of the environments. Yeah, the world of Dark Souls still seems like a pretty cruddy place to live. What is more interesting are the brief glimpses of bosses and enemies.

I feel a littler underwhelmed by it, but how can I not after 12 minutes of actual gameplay.

News::PCGamer- Defiance Review

PCG:Around a dozen hours into my time with Defiance, I realised that I was having fun. Not the kind of fun that warrants an unreserved recommendation, but I had acclimated to the vagaries of Trions sci-fi MMO shooter in such a way that I was getting something out of it. My early impressions, however, were not good. When I started playing, I scooted around on a quadbike and blasted mutants and noticed all of the games faults.

News::HardGame2 - Army of Two: The Devils Cartel Review

HG:Better fall into grace to be funny. This saying taken from the popular Spanish proverb comes in handy to discuss the saga Army of Two, although far from perfect, it has concerned itself in different deliveries to offer a different approach to the saturated market of action games in the third person. The first installment garnered some success thanks to the innovative nature of the proposal since it was launched in a very appropriate time. The second part, no longer met the same fate, and unfortunately it seems that The Devil's Cartel not going to monopolize the headlines, but this time do have higher crime, and its creators have failed to take the step forward that this saga so needed.

News::GameZebo: The Time Tribe Review

GameZebo: An ancient house and a group of strangers brought together under mysterious circumstances: that's the set-up for any number of horror movies, but it's also the backdrop for something less sinister and more intellectually stimulating in The Time Tribe. This free-to-play, point-and-click adventure is suitable for all but the youngest gamers, and it uses a variety of means to tell a pretty engrossing story.

News::GameZebo: Royal Gems Review

GameZebo: Royal Gems initially appears to be a lovely, bright match-three game that will suck away all of your free time like so many other games have been able to do. While the terms lovely and bright certainly do apply to the final product, Royal Gems unfortunately offers a disappointing experience that feels more like a Facebook game than a PC download title.

News::GameZebo: Strange Cases: The Faces of Vengeance Review

GameZebo: As movies like The Silence of the Lambs have melodramatically shown us, being an FBI agent is no picnic; still, we love being party to the danger this singular profession invites. New hidden object game Strange Cases: The Faces of Vengeance gives us the chance to once again join the ranks of the armed-and-trenchcoat-ed as they pursue a vengeful villain. Sadly, due to a game concept and story that feel incomplete, the experience is largely underwhelming.

News::EA Montreal faces more layoffs, rumored studio closure

EA Mobile in Montreal faces 200 - 250 employee layoffs with more to come, a source with connections to EA Mobile told Gamasutra, and the studio will gradually become completely shutdown. EA confirmed layoffs but said that the suggested number is to high and there are no plans to close EA Montreal.

Last month, after a different event of EA Montreal and Visceral Montreal layoffs, EA told Gamasutra: "EA Montreal is a key development studio where our long-term plan is to sharpen our teams' focus on console and mobile games."

So, long-term plan equals 30 days?

"EA is sharpening its focus to provide games for new platforms and mobile. In some cases, this involves reducing team sizes as we evolve into a more efficient organization," EA told Joystiq. "These are difficult decisions to let go of good people who have made important contributions to EA, and whenever possible we retrain or relocate employees to new roles. Streamlining our operations will help ensure EA is bringing the best next-generation games to players around the world."

Destructoid has reached out to EA for comment and will update this post as the story develops.

News::Capcom: Darkstalkers' opening sales are a failure

Capcom senior VP Christian Svensson recently said that fighting game re-releases are dropping in popularity, and now the sales numbers for Darkstalkers Resurrection confirm his theory.

After years of fans asking for a downloadable re-release, Darkstalkers Resurrection didn't place on the list of best-selling PlayStation Network games. Svensson says part of this is due to a lack of promotion but he's working on changing that.

"We've not given up. But I'm disappointed in the opening sales response relative to any other fighting title we've put out on the same platforms," Svensson says on Ask Capcom, "given the frequency and urgency of requests we've had here over the last several years and the quality of the execution. It is the most fully featured and probably best project of this type we've done."

Svensson continues, clarifying that he is not upset at the fans who continue to support the franchise. We all knew this day was going to come, as fighting games got a shot in the arm in 2009 from Street Fighter IV . The popularity just can't last, it seems, and if it can then re-releases aren't the solution.

Hot off the news of the DuckTales game coming this Summer from Capcom, Disney is showing off the Toy Box mode of Disney Infinity today with a brand new trailer. The gist of the mode is that you'll be able to take any character from any Disney property and mix and match them with various locations and objects. Otherwise, characters will have to stay in their respective franchises for the core part of the experience.

Anything is possible it seems, from Phineas and Ferb signaling drag races for the characters from Cars, to Jack Sparrow hanging out in the Nightmare Before Christmas realm. No matter what the quality of this game is, odds are Disney fanatics will eat it up, given the sheer number of IPs on offer here.

News::Namco opening new studios in Vancouver, Singapore

It seems like we've been hearing nothing but studio closers happening left and right. Well there's some good news in this field as Namco Bandai is opening up a new studio in Vancouver, Canada. The British Columbia Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training website made the announcement, and the studio is expected to open this June with a focus on developing online social games.

This is good news for the city of Vancouver, as there was quite the exodus of Vancouver-based studios recently lured away to Toronto, Canada instead.

Namco is also set to open up a new studio over in Singapore in June, but no details were given on what this studio's focus will be.

I know, not the most exciting news but I wanted to share something positive in this aspect amidst the seemingly bleak state of the industry.

With less than three days to go, Yacht Club Games' Shovel Knight Kickstarter has already blown past the $200K mark and met all its original stretch goals. So the boys had to come up with even more stretch rewards, one of which is a physical box you can "store" your Shovel Knight "cartridge" inside of. It's nothing more than a folded piece of cardboard, but I want it so bad.

Today, Spencer Hayes and Steven Hansen are the worst Spaceteam crew ever, Chris Carter frowns at the microtransaction-laden Tekken Card Tournament, Ubisoft is slowly working its way back into our good graces after delaying Rayman Legends, prospective students can enroll into Monster Hunter Community College, Deep Silver is pretty full of itself, and there's actually an ending to the old cell phone classic Snake.
