News::TSC Reviews - Pro Evolution Soccer 2014

The Same Coin take a look at Konami's latest version of PES 2014 From the moment PES 2014 starts and you are met with the sounds of Nessun Dorma, you know this wants to be a serious football game, but after several missteps in recent years itll take more than using a bit of Pavarotti to evoke a generations memories of the summer of 1990 to get Konamis series back on track. PES 2014 is easily the biggest revolution of the series since it evolved out of International Superstar Soccer way back in 2001. Whilst its biggest rival FIFA has gone from strength to strength in recent years PES has seemingly stood still, this year Konami are out to address that with a series of new features aimed at making this the beginning of a new era.

News::Sony planning to sell 5M PS4 consoles by March 2014

Speaking at their Tokyo Game Show press conference today, Sony President Andrew House stated that they plan to sell 5 million PlayStation 4 consoles by fiscal year end, or March 2014. Sony aimed to sell 6 million PlayStation 3 consoles back in 2007, but fell short and sold 3.6 million units back then.

Something tells me though that they're going to meet their targeted goal this time around. Do you plan to pickup a PS4 when it's released this November?

News::Final Fantasy Agito 'will definitely be localized'

We recently learned about Final Fantasy Agito, an Android/iOS game in development at Square Enix that is a companion to Final Fantasy Type-0 (which was formerly known as Final Fantasy Agito XIII and was a mobile game before becoming a PSP release).

Speaking to USGamer, Square Enix's Hajime Tabata said Agito would, "will definitely be localized." However, as Square Enix representatives on hand were quick to point out, this isn't the announcement of a release outside of Japan. Games sometimes get localized, but never released. In fact, Type-0 was largely localized for US and European releases despite never making it out of Japan, according to Tabata.

Tabata also noted that Type-0 and Agito are companion titles and that he still wants Western audiences to experience Type-0, hopefully through a PlayStation Network release. A complete localization of Type-0 is in the final stages of planning.

Certain early aspects of the free-to-play Agito have me less than interested in the mobile title, but I almost want to get my hopes up for that digital release of a localized Type-0. People seem to have high praise for it. How do you feel about this? Ready for another F2P Final Fantasy?

News::Superhot and Mount Your Friends greenlit on Steam

It's far from the best group of Steam Greenlight titles to move forward -- and that's putting it nicely -- but the September 18th group has a few standouts. Superhot , the first-person shooter where time moves when you do; the hilarious muscular antics of Mount Your Friends ; and the 2D brawler Dusty Revenge are all good to go. The rest of the list is as follows:

  • Bugbear Entertainment's Next Car Game

  • Camtasia

  • Candle*

  • DwarfCorp

  • Eden Star*

  • Gimbal

  • Grimm

  • Higurashi When They Cry

  • Humans Must Answer*

  • Lacuna Passage

  • Long Live the Queen

  • Monochroma

  • Postmortem: One Must Die

  • SeaCraft

  • Syder Arcade

  • theHunter

  • U55 - End of the Line

  • Valdis Story Abyssal City*

  • Warsow

  • World of Diving

  • WWII Online: Battleground Europe

  • Zombie Tycoon II

I suppose it's a good sign that these aren't all great-looking. To me, that means Valve isn't quite so backed up -- that the rate of approvals is getting closer to where it ought to be. Granted, there are always going to be those games that prompt people to angrily type out "Why the eff did _ make it but _ didn't?!" The games with an asterisk are ones I also think look promising.

News::The Breakdown - The Evil Within

Ian Fisher writes: One such title that could help put old-school horror games back on the map is The Evil Within. The latest game from Shinji Mikami, creator of Resident Evil, The Evil Within is as old-school as a horror game can get these days through the design choices that have been made. Unveiled this past Summer, we now have a relatively fresh look at The Evil Within via a new trailer made for the Tokyo Game Show. Seeing as how The Evil Within could be a pivotal moment as to whether well see more horror games released that dont have CoD tropes within them, I thought it would be wise to feature the game on The Breakdown.

Richard Wakeling, Thunderbolt writes: It may only be September but the season of horror is well and truly upon us as we slowly encroach on Halloween. While the Triple A horror game has become relatively defunct during this current generation at least if you favour survival over big guns the independent scene has found its niche in provoking absolute terror, producing some of the scariest games ever made over the past few years. News::So there's this new Riddick game for iOS...

You might've heard about Riddick: The Merc Files, a new iOS game that was frightening to see crop up so close to the news that Vin Diesel, Tigon Studios, and some ex-Starbreeze developers are working on a Riddick game. These are two separate projects, seemingly -- Diesel originally referenced "a great Riddick app" before discussing "the third chapter" of the series for "my die-hard gamers." Listen to the original video interview and see if you agree.

Former Starbreeze executives Nicklas Dunham and Jens Larsson are attached to The Merc Files -- they established a new company called Gaming Corps, which worked on the game with Diesel's Tigon. Interestingly, Gaming Corps describes itself as "a complete studio aiming for all the major gaming platforms no matter if it's an AAA development for the hardcore audience or a social game implemented on Facebook."

Or maybe this is all we're getting and I'm just in a state of denial here.

News::Videri String Quartet plays game music with class

Do you like you game arrangements to have a flair for the classical? Then check out Videri String Quartet, a four-piece string cover band ready to dazzle you with their sensible covers of classic game tunes. After receiving a warm reception at a few shows, including RTX 2012, the group decided to launch a Kickstarter for a studio-produced album. That album is now complete and ready for the world!

Portals, available for $12 from Loudr and iTunes, is a collection of nine arrangements culled from Super Mario Bros., Final Fantasy X, Journey, Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Kingdom Hearts II, Final Fantasy VII, Monkey Island, and Halo. Ironically, Portal is not covered despite the album's title suggesting otherwise.

Videri's sound reminds me a lot of Select Start, another band known for their sensible covers of classic game tunes but which has gone quiet in recent years. If you're tired of rock and electronica game mixes, Portals is a great change of pace. Pick it up!

News::Don't steal this guy's coin

We missed this the first time it came about, so I'm glad someone brought it to my attention today when it was re-uploaded on creator Exit73Studios' YouTube channel. The short focuses on a man and his love for a single coin. That coin is stolen, and so a beat'em up style rampage erupts to get back the coin.

It goes without saying how I want this to be a game now. Eagle transformation powers? Hell yes.

News::The Bureau: XCOM Declassified Review - Glitch Cat

Glitch Cat - The Bureau could have been a great game, but unfortunately it isnt. While the game has solid controls and a nice battle system, idiotic team A.I., the lack of customization options and rough visuals really turns something that should be exciting into something that is lackluster and pretty straightforward. Multiplayer could have improved the game nicely, but as it stands, The Bureau is a missed opportunity.
