News:: The latest Five Nights game is a Pizzeria Simulator

Five Nights at Freddy's developer Scott Cawthon has released another game on Steam, and at first glance, it looks like a departure with its simple aesthetic and arcade-minded mechanics. As a restaurant owner in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, you'll "Design pizzas, feed kids, and get high scores!"

It's never that simple, though.

A quick scan of the Steam user reviews suggests there's a more detailed (and intriguing) game hiding just beneath the friendly exterior. Some slightly spoiler-y choice quotes:

  • "This game is not what it claims to be..."
  • "Do not be tricked by the screenshots and trailer..."
  • "What just happened?"
  • "After you get past the opening sequence in this game (which is just throwing pizzas as Freddy Fazbear), the game turns into an amazing hybrid of a Tycoon game and a traditional Five Nights at Freddy's game."

If any of that has you feeling curious, Pizzeria Simulator is free on Steam.

News:: There won't be anymore Xbox One backward compatibility updates for 2017

2017 has been an incredibly fruitful year for Xbox One backward compatibility. The console defining feature not only saw a large amount of 360 games, but also introduced original Xbox support and even 4K remasters of some 360 games. To say that we've been spoiled would be an understatement, especially considering you don't even need to rebuy any of your old games.

If you were expecting some more updates for the end of the year, then you'll be sad to know that the BC team is taking December off to recoup for the holidays. I certainly don't blame them, because I'd want some time off after working on 140+ games.

News:: Comments of the Week 27: Little fish, big fish, swimming in the water

Hello my little demons! It is I, Plastic Tree up on Melancholy Hill! I have returned from my recent hiatus to bring you what you all love. My new theme is a reflection of my recent found fondness for Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call. I was originally not a fan of the game, and preferred Digital Devil Saga's set up over Lucifer's more environmental-based storytelling. Bloodborne and Demon's Souls started to change my perspective on that kind of game, and made me see Lucifer's Call feat. Dante from the Devil May Cry Series in a new light!

Perro is out this week so the big tree is stepping in! His spirit is still with us through the delightful header and title cards he's made for me.

Let's get on with this!

News:: Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp was almost a very different game

By now most of you have probably played or at the very least seen a bit of Nintendo's mobile venture for the Animal Crossing series, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. You might, however, be unaware that this project was almost a different game entirely.

The early version of the game was internally referred to as "Animal Crossing: Town Planner." You probably guessed this bit, but rather than managing a campsite, players would place buildings to please the oh-so-needy inhabitants of an Animal Crossing Village.

News:: The Division's 'Resistance' update breaks loose tomorrow

The Division will be receiving its second free DLC for 2017, The Resistance, tomorrow on all platforms. This will include a new map, West Side Pier, and two new modes; one focused on PvE called "The Resistance" and one on PvP called "Skirmish." Resistance sounds like a horde mode, since the description mentions surviving through progressively harder waves and Skirmish is just team deathmatch, which is fine. There will also be a brand new social hub, some improves to the "Underground" paid DLC and a reworking of the gear system.

Along with the release of this new DLC, Ubisoft is going to be holding both a "Free DLC" week and a free weekend for the game. The free week will see all players able to play the season pass content from December 5th to the 10th without requiring a purchase. If you think you can plow through the new storyline in a couple of days, this is your time to shine!

The free weekend, which simply gives you access to the game, will run from December 7th to the 10th. Since The Division has a free trial version that allows play for six hours or until you hit level eight, that will be on hold while the free weekend is going on. Finally, there will be a discount for the game and its gold edition on the Ubisoft Store during this promotion. Yippie!

So if you and a bunch of friends are really bored this weekend, why not check out The Division? It should occupy a few hours, at least.

News:: What's your favorite Pixar movie?

With Coco taking the first spot once again this week and no new movies to really talk about over a dead weekend it seems like perfect time to talk Pixar! It's either that or dogging on Justice League again as it it dropped 60 percent from last week's box office, tracking it to be the lowest-grossing DCEU film. But Pixar is a much happier subject so let's swing that way.

I think for me it has to be Toy Story 3. While I'm not sure it's actually the best of their films from a quality standpoint, it hit me the hardest emotionally because I grew up with the films. I had thought the third film was going to be some lackluster cash grab, but it turned out to be a powerful story about growing up, change, and imagination.

Bonus, underrated Pixar movie: The Good Dinosaur is a visual stunner, if lacking a bit in story.

News:: You'll be able to buy Overwatch League skins next year

Can you every truly have enough character skins in Overwatch? Heck no!

Blizzard has spoken more about Overwatch League skins today and how players will be able to acquire them. According to commissioner Nate Nanzer, in early 2018, "the home team uniforms for all 12 inaugural season teams will be added to the game as official Overwatch League skins."

The company plans to add another form of currency, League Tokens, that can only be used for League in-game content. This system is meant to "ensure that the correct amounts from your League-related purchases go towards the teams," and it'll also mean you can buy "the exact team skins you want."

During the first month of this rollout next year, players who log in will earn enough tokens to afford a single skin of their choosing. You can get a preview of the team colors in the gallery below. As for pricing and what percent of proceeds will go to the teams, Blizzard hasn't divulged that info yet.

News:: Star Wars Battlefront II has upped its credit payouts

Despite the unresolved microtransaction situation, this week is still the week Star Wars Battlefront II kicks off its first season of content. If you're anything like me, you're painstakingly saving up credits for Finn and Phasma before they join the game on December 13. It's been slow-going (I still don't have Luke or Vader), but a few adjustments today make rewards slightly less stingy.

The end-of-round payout has been increased. This is an area we agree needed to be buffed a bit, especially when it comes to rewarding players for doing well in-game. We're upping the number of Credits you get for a match across the board, and specifically bumping the top players on each team by even more.

Earn 3X more Credits daily in Arcade Mode. It's been made clear that you were hitting the Arcade Mode Credit cap faster than we expected, so we wanted to alleviate that by increasing it to 1500 Credits. While we're still looking into ways to add more content into it the mode in the long-term, we think that this should help in the near-term for those who want rewards for completing the different scenarios.

Daily Login Crates will now provide more crafting parts than before. You'll notice the change right away when you log in. Crafting the Star Cards you want will help make sure you're progressing in the direction you want, and we absolutely want to empower that. This should help you get where you want to go faster when it comes to crafting and upgrading.

Awarding more credits to the top players will hopefully help a little with motivation, while giving out more crafting parts will at the very least get me to log in daily. For reference, here's what I just got:

These currency payout changes are more of a bandage than a full-on fix for Battlefront II's sluggish sense of player progression, and I'm not sure why it took this long for them to take effect. For its part, EA says "these are only some initial steps toward making much larger changes." I'd certainly hope so.

News:: Twitch user streams UFC pay-per-view by pretending he's playing UFC 3

Live streaming sports pay-per-views is a no-no, for obvious reasons, and can land you in big trouble. This is why Twitch user AJ Lester chose not to spend Saturday night watching UFC 218, which took place in Detroit, Michigan, and instead chose to try out the UFC 3 beta instead.

Except, on closer inspection, your boy Lester was sneakily streaming the PPV -- which saw Max Holloway battle Jose Aldo for the Featherweight title -- whilst just holding a Xbox One controller on camera and making "gaming" sounds. Thus giving a passing-glance impression that Electronic Arts had really taken their in-game engine up a notch for the MMA sequel.

An amusing clip of Lester's subterfuge went viral on Twitter, resulting in the streamer waking up to thousands of notifications and new followers. In a follow-up stream, Lester spoke of the shock at his overnight blow-up, mentioning that so far he doesn't appear to have gotten into any trouble for the broadcast, which can have pretty serious ramifications. Lester has wisely removed the UFC PPV broadcast from his on-demand archive.

News:: Ubisoft is handing out Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and World in Conflict on PC

Ubisoft is giving out free copies of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and World in Conflict on Uplay this month. The latter game is actually up first (it's available until December 11 at 2:00am Pacific), whereas Black Flag will be offered from December 12 at 6:00am to December 18 at 2:00am. (We'll remind ya.)

At this point, I probably don't need to say much of anything about Black Flag other than noting that if you aren't normally into the long-running series but you find pirates alluring, it's worth considering. There are plenty of people who couldn't get into Assassin's Creed who ended up digging this game.

As for World in Conflict, it's an alternate-history strategy title in which World War III broke out in the late '80s and Soviet forces have begun to invade Seattle, WA. It was well-reviewed when it came out a decade ago and it's from Massive Entertainment, the folks behind Ground Control.

News:: 'Mega Man 11' will arrive on consoles and PC in late 2018

This month marks the 30th anniversary of the original Mega Man, which came out for NES on December 17th, 1987. In a stream celebrating the milestone, Capcom had a couple announcements -- most importantly, that Mega Man 11 will be coming to PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC in late 2018. But Capcom had another surprise in store for long-time fans: All eight games in the notoriously difficult-to-find Mega Man X series will come to leading platforms.

News:: Setting up 22,000 Cuphead dominoes might be harder than than the actual game

Even though I doubt I'd ever create a project that involves over 22,000 dominoes, I can appreciate the Rube Goldberg aspect of it all. These consistently updated videos from TheDominoKing always find a way to showcase new little tricks of the trade, and thew new Cuphead project definitely has a few of those.

TheDominoKing has been posting videos for roughly six years now, and in the past year, has pivoted his channel to almost exclusively gaming related domino creations. Yet, I always cringe when they hit the first domino! Seeing everything they worked for literally fall into place probably makes them happy, but I can't imagine the cleanup and sorting involved.

News:: Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris looks all right in this launch trailer

I was so focused on hearing about Destiny 2's future that I let its first expansion, Curse of Osiris, sneak up on me. That's out tomorrow for $20 (or $35 as part of the game's expansion pass), and with it comes new story missions on the Vex-overrun Mercury, another social space, new Strikes and Crucible maps, more weapons and gear to earn, and the so-called "raid lair" on Leviathan, Eater of Worlds.

Here's all that in moving-picture form:

Whether you're slated to play Curse of Osiris or not, tomorrow will be a good day to check back in with Destiny 2. Bungie is adding armor ornaments, offering a daily selection of legendary weapon and armor mods for purchase from Banshee-44, and changing up reputation token drops as part of a free update. Then, on December 12, we'll get another update to introduce Masterworks weaponry.

I'm not stoked for any one aspect of the updates or the DLC, but I'm happy to have a reason to return.

News:: Speedrunner beats 15-year-old World Record on GoldenEye 007

This weekend, speedrunner Karl Jobst blew his (and many other runner's) minds when he toppled a World Record on Rare's legendary N64 title GoldenEye 007. A record that was originally set some fifteen years ago.

The record in question pertains to the game's first level, Dam, on Agent difficulty. On September 22, 2002, GoldenEye player Bryan Bosshardt finished one of gaming's most recognisable stages in 53 seconds, a record that players have attempted to beat countless times since. On December 2, Australian player Karl Jobst did what many have thought impossible for years, by beating the time by a single second. The video below shows the successful run, complete with Jobst internal freakout when the record-setting time is revealed.

Jobst is helped by a couple of bullets in the back, which give him a minor boost, as well as getting a "fast gate" at the Dam entrance. You may notice that he keeps the camera glued to the floor or the sky, this is a tactic used by runners to reduce rendering time, that can slow the game down.

It's one of those moments that many outside of video gaming, or even within it, may not think a big deal, but for those that care about speedrunning, or just love seeing people achieve personal goals, it's a wonderful clip.

Congratulations Karl, now... who's got 0:51?

News:: Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 and 2 are coming to Switch next year with amiibo support

So this Mega Man 30th anniversary stream was definitely worth watching.

A lot of people expected disappointment, as the last seven years has basically wrought, but we got the announcement of a Mega Man X Collection that's coming to all major platforms, and a new Mega Man game -- Mega Man 11, set to arrive in late 2018.

We also got another tidbit of info for those of you who were confused to as to the state of the original Legacy releases for Switch. Both Legacy Collections, which collectively contain Mega Man 1-10, are heading to the platform in 2018 with amiibo support.

Conspicuously missing was confirmation for the 3DS edition of Legacy Collection 2, despite the fact that the first launched with a 3DS version. As I've been saying recently, I'm worried for the platform as the Switch continues to snatch up more and more games that used to be prime real estate for it.

News:: Capcom announces new Mega Man game in 2017...grab your Time Stopper

After dropping the news that Mega Man X1-8 was coming to all major platforms (including Switch), Capcom showed off a vignette that reminded us of Mega Man's past, stating that it would give us a clue as to where his "future" would go. Future merch? No, a new game!

Like the X Collection it's coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It's slated for late 2018, and "more info" will be given out next summer.

Well I'll be, this outdoes the "Mega Man Killer" Mighty No. 9 visually, and I have to give it to Capcom -- the one two punch of the proven X series and the intrigue of the first new Mega Man game since 2010 made this stream worth watching.

During the Mega Man 30th Anniversary celebration stream today, Capcom reminded us that the actual anniversary is on the 17th, but it chose today to celebrate. Oh, and it also revealed that a Mega Man X collection is coming to PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. I probably should have led with that.

I was right! Unlike several other collections that break up games, this one will include Mega Man X1-8.

News:: Watch the official Mega Man 30th anniversary stream right here

As we found out last week, Capcom is celebrating Mega Man's 30th anniversary with a last-minute Twitch stream that will close out the year.

While Mega Man fans haven't expected much since the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3, and the rest of the franchise, in recent months Legacy Collections have been popping up, leading some to believe that Capcom is ramping the series back up to promote the upcoming cartoon -- and possibly resurrect the Blue Bomber.

My prediction for now, especially since Nintendo and Sony retweeted the anniversary announcement, is that we'll get a Mega Man X Collection on multiple platforms today. The stream kicks off at 2PM ET today (just a few minutes), and will run for approximately an hour.

News:: Gungrave VR, yes a Gungrave game in 2017, hits Japan this month

As we discussed a few months ago, Gungrave is coming back. You know, that Gungrave, from Trigun creator Yasuhiro Nightow -- the series that was created in 2002 as a video game, then became an anime, was around for a little while, and promptly vanished after another game.

Developer Iggyborn is handling a new VR-centric title, and now it has a release date of December 14. As expected it's a shooter, and will provide both third and first-person action sequences. I'm tempted to pick it up depending on the price, as I doubt I'll need a full grasp of Japanese to enjoy it.

If this somehow takes off, and I don't know if it even has a chance as a niche anime on a niche device, but I would love to see Nightow revive the forgotten and buried Trigun: The Planet Gunsmoke project.

Back in August Final Fantasy XV was given some free Assassin's Creed themed DLC in the form of The Assassin Festival. The event took place in the city of Lestallum and allowed players to get an assortment of Creed-themed costumes.

Well, now it seems that the crossover favor is being returned. A new surprise side-quest is set to appear in Assassin's Creed Origins and it looks like it might reward players with a Chocobo mount.
