News::XP reduction lowered for free players in SW: TOR patch

If you were expecting to have a fairly comparable experience playing The Old Republic for free, you were probably disappointed to find out that you had a 25% reduced XP rate after level 10. It made the game more of a grind, and as a result, a lot of players who would have otherwise been sucked into paying for parts of the game left entirely.

As of this week though, the reduction mechanic only applies at level 12, and will only slowly increase to 25% until level 20, which gives you a bit more leeway in terms of starting an alternate character.

As someone who played the game at launch enough to have a max-level character, I enjoyed my time with The Old Republic. It's a shame they couldn't do more to keep people interested from an MMO standpoint, but as a completely single-player experience, it was a ton of fun.

News::Legend of Dungeon alpha now on sale for Windows/Mac/Linux

Robot Loves Kitty is now selling "nearly beta" builds of its wonderful-looking beat-'em-up Legend of Dungeon via the Humble Store. For $10, an entirely reasonable price from what I've played, you will get this pre-release version across Windows, Mac, and Linux; pay an additional $5, and they'll throw in the soundtrack, too.

Since we last checked in, the game's dynamic music system has been implemented with upwards of 240 responsive tracks in total. Even if this title is an alpha, it doesn't necessarily feel like it -- maybe I just haven't played Legend of Dungeon enough yet, but it's surprisingly polished.

The developers say they are "closing in on feature completeness," so do give this a look if procedurally-generated dungeons, co-op beat-'em-up gameplay, and rogue-like elements sound like a winning combination. (They should!) The art design doesn't hurt, either.

News::Friday Night Fights: So... anyone buying the new Gears?

Welcome to another edition of Destructoid's Friday Night Fights!

So Gears of War: Judgment comes out next week. Anybody biting? I've personally added and removed the thing from my GameFly queue at least a half-dozen times by now, as I simply cannot decide whether I want to play it or not.

I've always been a huge fan of the Gears campaigns, and from what I can tell this one looks to be the same action-packed thrill-ride we've come to expect. And yet, I just can't bring myself to care. Maybe it's because I've still got Tomb Raider to play and BioShock Infinite coming out the week after (not to mention a gigantic backlog that grows larger every month -- I should really consult a physician), or maybe it's just because I loved the Marcus and Dom bromance more than I was willing to admit. Who knows! All I know is that Judgment is currently sitting in my GameFly queue, and I'm thinking about removing it yet again.

Either way, I'm certain at least SOMEBODY will be playing it come next Friday's FNF... right?

News::Bioshock Infinite Preview | Gaming Capacity

The original Bioshock put players in a beautiful yet horrendous setting. A fabulous underwater paradise surrounded by the open ocean, Rapture was the epitome of perfection. That perfection became twisted and warped, leading the citizens to either kill each other, or become the victims themselves. The strong survived and fed off of the losers. The sick and demented citizens that once had been some of the most intelligent and high class people, had become obsessed with physical manipulations through plasmids, a chemical that could alter a persons genetic makeup to allow them access to great power. Power such as shooting lighting from their fingertips (a la Emperor Palpatine), or blast fire from their palms, even teleportation and kinetic abilities. The underwater setting with the crushing water leaking in through the windows and cracks in the architecture only instilled greater fear in us as we scurried through darkened corridors and half destroyed rooms.

News::Games with Notable Soundtracks (2012 13)

We live in a nation that realises the necessity to add that extra zing to even the worst of plots by getting a solid grip on the original soundtrack. So when Bollywood propels its movies on music and theme songs, why not the entire gaming scene the world over? Games are like movies in all regards, except for one, there cant be a slow-for-the-plots-sakes video game. It can nearly kill the addition or beauty of it if it falls beyond what is required. However, video games can go slower on the plot or actions at times, depending on the beauty of the script and of course the soundtrack that carries it

News::Fractured Soul has been submitted to Steam Greenlight

Get ready to split yourself into oblivion, as Fractured Soul has been submitted to the Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms on Steam Greenlight. The game was previously a 3DS exclusive, but will now be available to a wider audience, so long as it passes the trials and tribulations of the Greenlight system

While I really enjoy the dual-screen function of the DS and 3DS (without poorly implemented stylus controls), more games from those two platforms really could work just fine on PC, so I hope other developers follow suit.

News::Road Rash reboot now being discussed, says designer

Following the stir caused by Road Rash programmer/co-designer Dan Geisler's Reddit post about the possibility of a series reboot comes a promising reply to the fan response.

"I am amazed at the level of interest in the remake," Geisler said to Destructoid. "I feel this needs to happen. As to EA, I'm having discussions with my Chief Technology Officer about it now."

Geisler mentioned earlier in the week that he would initiate a Kickstarter for a new Road Rash had their been enough demand for one, and told Destructoid that more information would come soon from his new company, 5X Enterprises. He recently departed from Glu Mobile.

News::Resident Evil 6 and Left 4 Dead 2 are getting a crossover

Say what?!

In a bizarre move, Capcom has announced that they are teaming up with Valve for some playable cross-promotion content between Left 4 Dead 2 and Resident Evil 6 .

For starters, the cast from Left 4 Dead 2 will be featured in Resident Evil 6's "The Mercenaries: No Mercy" mode, which is exclusive to the PC version of the game. No Mercy will also feature the Witch and Mini-Tank enemy types from L4D2 in addition to the playable cast. This will all drop on April 5th for free.

But the craziness doesn't stop there, as Left 4 Dead 2 is getting its own crossover, when Resident Evil 6 enemies (the Lepotitsa, Napad and Ogroman) creep into the game this Spring.

Valve's Chet Faliszek had this to say on the collaboration: “We’re huge Resident Evil fans, so when the opportunity arose to work directly with Capcom to combine L4D2 and RE6, we jumped at it.”

Yep, so this is a thing. I may be the only person excited for it.

News::Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D rolls into Europe in May

It looks like the upcoming Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will be heading to Europe and other regions on May 24, according to Nintendo of Europe.

I'm beyond hyped for this game. Although the Wii version was one of my favorite releases of the year, I lamented the lack of the option for a Classic Controller.

Now that I can spring into some Kong related challenges on the go (this is the first time a portable Donkey Kong Country game has been released in 10 years by the way), I'm more inclined to go back and get that 100% completion rate.

News::Slitherine is making a turn-based Warhammer 40,000 game

Strategy game developer Slitherine has signed a licensing agreement with Games Workshop to make a multiplatform turn-based title based on Warhammer 40,000, it was announced this week. This project will be in line with what the studio does best, so fans of the tabletop game in particular will want to keep it on their radar.

"It's all about creating strategy games that are targeted to a particular audience and addressing a very specific need in the market," said Slitherine Group chairman JD McNeil. "The Warhammer 40,000 setting is a perfect fit for the style of strategy games that we make and will be very popular with fantasy and science fiction fans alike."

In a statement provided to GamesIndustry International, a rep for Games Workshop explained that "The days of monolithic Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000 licenses on all platforms are behind us. In the future, games based on our properties will be platform and subject specific, which is great news as it means there are far more opportunities than before."

News::Army Of Two: The Devils Cartel Lacks Personality

Gamer Euphoria writes: ''The Army of Two: Devils Cartel demo has seemingly confirmed what I was worried about. Sure the franchise has never really been all that great, but it has been a ton of fun to blast through with a friend. There was plenty of things that Army of Two & the 40th Day didnt do all that well. In both games, a lot of the levels tended to be rather generic and lacked any real creativity. The enemy AI was pretty poor, borderline stupid at times, and the stories always tended be to lamein a charming way. Even with their flaws, both games were enjoyable and allowed friends just to have some dumb fun. The cheesiness of the dialogue between Salem and Rios also produced a few guilty laughs, this added nicely to the tone of both games.''

In an uncanny interview with GameTrailers TV's Geoff Keighley, a bandage-covered Joakim Mogren (the CEO of Moby Dick Studio, supposedly) dodged questions about The Phantom Pain but did go on record to say that he'll have a new trailer this month at the Game Developers Conference. "It will answer all of your questions," he told Keighley.

Mogren brought along his iPad with concept art and screenshots from the game, the latter of which featured a logo for Kojima Productions' FOX Engine. As you might recall, that's the tech powering Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. Whatever The Phantom Pain ends up being, I must say, it's been a fun trip leading up to the reveal. The purchasing options for The Conduit HD are rather strange: The first two levels are free, and the full game is $4.99. However, each half of the game can also be purchased separately for $2.99 each, so if you've ever wanted to go that route, there you go.

C&C's Jared Baxter reviews the final ME3 add-on: "Just over a year from its launch, BioWares Mass Effect 3 still stirs up a bevy of emotions among the series following. Theres the attachment to the Normandys crew and its realistically complex characters. Theres the epic, sometimes hopeless, galaxy-wide war three games in the making against the Reapers. Then theres the Extended Cut conclusion which attempted to and mostly succeeded in replacing those original endings many would like to forget about. And dont forget about the other bonuses: the stellar multiplayer which continually added significant content, along with both the Leviathan and Omega DLCs. It begins...Nintendo has gotten into the physical figure market, Skylanders style.

This new Pokémon Rumble U trailer shows off a bit of gameplay, but most notably, the ability to take Pokémon toys and place them on the Wii U Gamepad to beam them into the game. It'll launch on April 24th for 1800 Yen, and the initial figures will be available: Torchic, Piplup, Lucario, Victini, Bulbasaur, and Pikachu.

I have a feeling this is a market test for a fully fledged collectable toy line for whatever Nintendo has planned next for Pokémon. The amount of people who would collect all 151 of these if they remake Pokemon Red on the Wii U is scary.
