News:: Batman Ninja is more Samurai than Ninja but still looks pretty rad

Batman been around for over 75 years, with a few dozen iterations and interpretations of the Dark Knight gracing all forms of media. Now, a new anime interpretation of the caped crusader from the far east surprises everyone with Batman Ninja. This story of the rich guy with issues that dresses up like a bat has him transported to the distant past of the Warring States Era of Japan. This era, also known as the "Sengoku Era" (1467 to 1603),  is when Japan was divided under different groups and nations. Batman then does the thing he does best but in old Japan: be Batman.

As y'all can see in the trailer above and below, Batman is not alone in his Japan trip and his longtime foe, the Joker, is there too doing his best Kefka impression. Even more of Batman's friends and foes are along for the wild ride with all kinds of crazy looking stuff that I'm not even gonna try to make sense as to how or why anything is happening. I'm just gonna enjoy sit back and watch the Batsh--amurai insane spectacle of it all.

Batman Ninja has some pretty good people behind it with the director Jumpei Mizusaki and studio Kamikaze Douga, who worked on CG opening animation shows such as JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Gatchaman Crowds. Screenplay is by Kazuki Nakashima who wrote for awesome anime such as Gurren Lagann and Kill La Kill, character designer is Takashi Okazaki who worked on Afro Samurai. Music is by Yuugo Kano whose work can be found in shows such as JoJo's, PSYCHO-PASS, and AJIN.

This film will come out in Japan in 2018 with no news of an English language release date as of the writing of this post.

News:: DayZ is rising from the dead and will leave early access next year

The history of DayZ almost echoes that of rising sports stars or breakout musicians. The game came out of nowhere, rocketed up the sales charts on Steam and then basically burned out in a relatively short manner. That isn't to say the concept wasn't great or that the success wasn't earned, but more that the internet moves at such an astronomically fast pace that the developers were never going to keep up with fan demand. 2018 looks to finally be the year that Bohemia Interactive gets to make right by that original premise.

In a rather lengthy blog post, the devs have outlined exactly what they plan to add to DayZ over the course of the next year. While I'm not up on the inner workings of the game, the biggest piece of news is that, "Both the BETA update and any further 0.63 updates, up to 1.0, will happen in 2018."

Along with that news comes mention of DayZ hitting Xbox One. While the devs refer to it simply as a platform (not stating One or X), they confirm that they are waiting for the PC beta to be in good form before even shipping anything for consoles. That doesn't mean the console version won't be out next year, because the blog reads, "DayZ will be out of Early Access next year, and we'll also finally deliver it to console players in 2018." That is certainly exciting.

I just don't know how many people are even still waiting on DayZ. Much like H1Z1, this game has been around longer than most conceptualized and completed games. While a five year development cycle isn't that odd in the games industry, taking to Early Access and then stalling for so long has basically ruined the popularity that surrounded the initial spark this game had. It also doesn't help that PUBG seems to actually be releasing this year and is in a much better state even in its own beta.

Whatever the case, at least Bohemia Interactive hasn't simply taken the money and run. It will be a sight to behold when DayZ finally does come out.

News:: How old do you think Splatoon's Marina & Pearl are...? Nope.

An art-book for Nintendo's colourful shooter, Splatoon 2, was released in Japan this week, with page upon page of neon nightmares. More importantly, we finally got a canon answer to the question that's been bothering fan-fic writers worldwide: How old are Marina and Pearl?

The duo, collectively known as dreadful rap-rock outfit Off The Hook, were named Splatfest hosts earlier this year, replacing classy squid-sisters Callie and Marie. When revealed, fans mocked Pearl for her gremlin-like qualities, whilst fawning over her lovely Deejay partner. These fans are wrong, incidentally, Pearl is Queen of the World.

So, how old are Marina and her grumpy, pint-sized buddy? Well, according to the new book, Marina is eighteen, which figures, given her trendy millenial qualities. That just leaves Pearl, who I always assumed was about nine/ten, right?

News:: Resident Evil amiibo were almost a thing

Have you ever wondered about amiibo figures that never made the cut? As someone who obsessively purchases these little figures, I do quite a bit. In a recent interview with Famitsu, Capcom's Ryota Niitsuma revealed that Resident Evil amiibo were considered at one point.

It isn't too surprising. Capcom has made amiibo lines for other games like Monster Hunter Stories and both Resident Evil Revelations titles have amiibo support on the Switch.

News:: Do you remember?: Comix Zone

When we were young teens, me and my brother laid claim to the basement. The rest of the house was neat and orderly, a pastel world of floral designs and tasteful drapes. But, the basement was ours. A savage land of hand-me-down sofas, coffee-stained carpets, and a musty dank smell that never, ever, went away. Like any warrior tribe, we felt it necessary to mark our territory. The border between the DMZ of our basement and the rest of the house was the basement door, as made clear by a ritual pasting of clippings, promotional art, and covers from back issues of game magazines and instruction manuals from years gone by.

Right in the exact middle of that collage was a full page ad for Comix Zone.

Neither of us particularly liked that game. It carried no cache, no special meaning to us. But there it was, dead center of the door. Another mystery of the teenage mind.

News:: Pikachu and Hello Kitty appointed official Ambassadors of Osaka

In a prestigious ceremony that took place this week, Japan's Foreign Minister, Taro Kono, officially appointed Pikachu and Hello Kitty as cultural ambassadors for Osaka, instantly raising the kawaii characters to a level of international importance many of us will never see.

The decision was taken to help promote Japan's bid for the World Expo 2025, a gathering of nations to discuss international issues. Dubai has been chosen for the 2020 event, with the bid for 2025 seeing Japan up against France, Russia and Azerbaijan, none of which have a Pokemon as a cultural ambassador.

The Japanese government haven't gone into any detail about the lovable character's roles in their newly appointed position, although both were specifically told: "I would like for you to represent Japan and proactively (promote) the attraction of Osaka inside and outside of the country."

Here's hoping they are both required to attend all parliamentary meetings in the future,

News:: There won't be any Yakuza announcements at PSX this year

During the inaugural PlayStation experience in 2014, viewers were graced the amazing gift of the announcement that Yakuza 5 would be localized for the west. The following year, Sony confirmed that Yakuza 0 would grace western consoles and in 2016, we were given confirmation that Kiwami and 6 would be coming. Whether intentional or not, the PlayStation Experience has become synonymous with Yakuza.

So imagine my pain when I found out that 2017's PSX won't feature anything Yakuza related. Announced during an official livestream of Yakuza 0, Sam Mullen and Scott Strichart (Sega of America localization producers) confirmed the terrible news for all Yakuza fans. While I'm saddened, I can definitely understand why.

The two most recent Ryu Ga Gotoku studio games are Kiwami 2 and Fist of the North Star, both of which have not released in Japan yet. While Kiwami 2 isn't far off (it releases December 7), Sega wouldn't really be in a position to show anything from a localization. They could announce a plan to translate these games, but we'd still be waiting at least 12 months before being able to play anything. It makes more sense to save that for next year.

Mullen and Strichart did at least reassure fans that 2018 will be a "great year" for Yakuza, so I'm sure we'll be getting some kind of surprise after Yakuza 6 launches. I can't imagine Sega would just stop after bringing 6 to the west, so I'm still hopeful for Kiwami 2.

News:: Alter Army is a frantic 2D platformer made by two 15-year-olds

I sometimes wonder where I'd be if I had channeled my passions and energy into something more productive as a teenager. Maybe I could have written a book by now. Development duo Mridul Pancholi and Mridul Bansal don't have to wonder. They're doing what I didn't, and what many of us look back on our wasted youth and wish we had done. At 15 years old, they're making a video game.

Their studio is called Vague Pixels and their game is Alter Army, a 2D beat-'em-up platformer that sends you through a ruthless gauntlet of monsters as you set out to find the last remaining resources in a dying universe.
