News:: Funny contraption builder Besiege is adding multiplayer and a level editor

The gif-friendly Steam Early Access title Besiege is getting not one but two of its biggest fan requests: cooperative and versus multiplayer, and a level editor with Steam Workshop support for sharing. Better yet, you'll even be able to build your levels inside multiplayer with up to seven of your best buds.

With potentially eight players screwing around in Besiege at once, performance could get dicey. One of the Q&A prompts on the Multiverse website covers this exact concern. In short, "All processing for the game's physics is done on the host's computer, which means everyone else can play the game even if they have a low spec computer!" And, as an example, "If the person hosting the game can handle 500 blocks in singleplayer, then the multiplayer game will also handle 500 blocks, total, as well."

If this looks the least bit compelling to you, now's the best time to jump on Besiege. It's on sale for only $5.59 until April 14. Additionally, once the Multiverse update lands, the base price will go up from $8 to $10. (Folks who own the game prior to the update won't need to pay anything extra.)

So, when's this coming out? "We're hoping to have it released to the public by Q3 of this year but it will depend largely on how the last few phases of testing go!" In other words, "when it's done."

News:: Badass fan-made Dragon Ball Z fighter is out now for free

I first found out about Hyper Dragon Ball Z three dang years ago tomorrow, and I'm happy to report you can download and play it right now, for free, in the recently released "Champ Build" that does some fighter rebalancing and adds even more characters.

You can find instructions for doing so in the video description. It certainly looks like the best Dragon Ball Z fighter ever made, if only for the incredible art. Make more 2D fighters!

News:: Watch new footage from Ninja Theory's upcoming Hellblade

Game Informer has an exclusive on some new footage (watch a longer clip here) and developer interviews for Ninja Theory's (Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, DmC: Devil Mar Cry) upcoming PC and PS4 action game, Hellbade: Senua's Sacrifice.

I played a very early build almost two years ago and had a very interesting chat with Ninja Theory's Dominic Matthews about the game's interpretation of mental health issues, if you want to read that. Since then it's added a subtitle and a whole lot else, I'm sure. The game stars, "a Celtic warrior who's going on a vision quest into the viking heartland," and dealing with physical manifestations of her fractured psyche.

News:: Nippon Ichi's new horror tease may be too subtle

Rather than explicitly announce and detail the new project, companies in both video games and film sometimes like to take an indirect approach with horror. Not going as far as Cloverfield, Nippon Ichi Software announced a new horror game with a five second teaser. Yes, Five Seconds.

If there is some hidden scare or embedded information I can't see it. Just a short recording of a room at night. Of course no bedroom in horror is complete without a creepy doll.

News:: Niantic says cooperative 'experiences' are coming to Pokemon Go

In a blog post discussing recent award wins for Pokemon Go, developer Niantic included a short but promising tease about its near-future content plans. What do you make of this? "With spring arriving in the northern hemisphere, players can look forward to all new cooperative social gameplay experiences in Pokémon GO that will give Trainers new and exciting reasons to get back into the sunshine."

What this update could and should entail is up for debate, but some players are speculating that it might tie into a not-yet-fully-implemented "raid" feature and/or a possible gym rework. That sounds believable enough, and I'm brought back to that cool but unrepresentative live-action trailer in which a huge group of strangers worked together to beat up and catch Mewtwo in Times Square.

As it stands, it is possible to play Go alongside others and form genuine connections, but more than that, I'd like to see features that actively encourage (but don't require) players to cooperate.

It's amusing to think about the sustained crowds that formed at the height of the game's popularity. If people are willing to swarm for Vaporeon, imagine what a legendary sighting could do.

Thank you... [Niantic via reddit]

News:: Trails of Cold Steel 1, 2 are finally PC-bound

When I search for headers, I Google the name in Japanese to get unique screens (but that's my secret; don't tell anyone else). What came up for The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold 2 was a lot of romancin'. Like those heroines, the PC is getting more lovin', as the first two Trails of Cold Steel games will be ported there. The first game will release sometime this summer with 50% more English voice over dialogue. Trails of Cold Steel 2 comes to PC eventually.

While the PC-based Japanese role-playing game fans are still waiting for big boys like Persona and Final Fantasy XV, perhaps the increasing number of PC ports will eventually persuade Square and Atlus. It'd also be nice if this sets the precedent for Trails of Cold Steel 3 to launch simultaneously on PC if it's localized.

News:: Watch Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker's Memory's first electrofunky trailer

Slightly odd to call this an "announcement" trailer since we've known about this game for some time, but it's the first one I suppose. Electronic beats jazz over a first glimpse at gameplay and environments.

Digital worlds and electronic music combos may be as cliche as that "Yooo!" sound effect in Japan-themed settings, but its one I'll never tire of. It's just cool. Even if Tron Legacy was bland overall it got the vibe right. Likewise, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker's Memory has a check mark for style. Now let's hope the gameplay is good.

News:: Strategy deals galore: Stellaris Utiopia, Europa 4 Mandate of Heaven

Paradox Interactive has been on a tear this week with sales galore on some of its popular titles and downloadable content from 2016. The Stellaris and Europa Universalis sales have been prompted by new DLC launches just yesterday: Stellaris Utopia and Europa Universalis IV: Mandate of Heave. The added content is all on sale if you know where to look.

Stellaris Deals:

For the best Stellaris Utopia deal, you'll need to head over to DLGamer. The France-based Paradox distributor is one of the few digital retailers offering up a deal on Steallaris' new DLC at 20% off for a $4 price cut. Conversely, the best deal on the Stellaris base game and expanded Nova and Galaxy Editions is at GMG, where it's as cheap as $21.79 -- the best price yet for 2017.

Europa Universalis Deals:

Game

DLCs

Over at EU4 land, the new Mandate of Heaven DLC is best picked up at GMG. In fact, all the best EU4 deals this weekend should be picked up at GMG instead of Steam. While some of the DLC has been cheaper in the past, this is still seasonal-sale-level pricing. Be sure to login or create an account at GMG to see the full discount. (For those wondering, that's nine DLCs listed above. That's par for the course for a Paradox title, of course.)

Tyranny Deals

Finally, best deals on Obsidian's Tyranny (not developed, but published by Paradox in this case) are at the WinGameStore. This weekend it's showing discounts up to 44% off and all versions are hitting historic low prices. A good pickup for those who enjoy cRPGs and Pillars of Eternity.

News:: Gearbox pulls out of deal with G2A in truly embarrassing fashion

Gearbox has shown its ass again, approximately 24 hours since last showing its ass. Yesterday, we reported on Gearbox partnering up with G2A to publish a collector's edition of the Bulletstorm remaster. G2A has a reputation that's elevated just ever-so-slightly above that of a common thief. It's notorious for buying and reselling keys, some of which were purchased fraudulently with stolen credit cards.

There was no trickery involved. G2A isn't a wolf in sheep's clothing. It's a wolf in wolf's clothing that's doing wolf things and everyone on the internet is complaining about all the wolf's shitty practices. Regardless, Gearbox feigned ignorance until the community called it out. Now it's doubling down on the innocence angle while throwing more people under the bus.

In a statement to Waypoint, Gearbox said that it's nixing the partnership with G2A. Yesterday's list of demanded changes came with a 24-hour deadline to respond and commit to them. That time frame has expired without G2A dedicating itself to changing its ways. Why would it? G2A makes far more money peddling graymarket keys than it would selling a few over-priced Bulletstorm statuettes.

Gearbox head of publishing Steve Gibson stated "As there has been no public movement from G2A by the time Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition launched now on PC, Gearbox Publishing will be doing their part to not directly support a marketplace that did not make the new public commitment to protecting customers and developers requested by Gearbox Publishing." He added "We can confirm that today we have begun executing on our extraction process."

However, Gearbox couldn't leave it at that. Studio president Randy Pitchford took to Twitter to insinuate that Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly is responsible for the G2A partnership and that this didn't start as a Gearbox Publishing initiative. Pitchford also claims that he didn't know about the agreement until very recently.

So far, Gearbox's involvement in this saga can be summed up by: It carelessly struck a deal without knowing the reputation of its partner (or knowing but not caring); it made a handful of toothless threats that it knew G2A would never adhere to; and it pinned the blame on its legitimate business partner by saying that People Can Fly is to blame for starting it all. The hole keeps getting deeper.

At this point, Gearbox's best shot at saving face is just a simple four-word phrase: "Sorry, we fucked up."

News:: This week's Rain World update addresses common complaints

It's a shame about Rain World's brutal reputation, but I'm still keeping an eye on it to see how things progress from here. Videocult has already responded with a patch "intended to accommodate some early player feedback and polish assorted rough edges on the various game systems."

The idea behind this "quick patch" was to smooth out the player experience without stripping Rain World so far back that it would totally lose its "unforgiving and even occasionally unfair" nature.

Gameplay improvements:

  • "Stuck in holes" fix - disconnected exits will no longer snag you
  • Subtle backlit slugcat in low visibility swimming situations
  • Quicker turning around in tunnels
  • Larger lung capacity while swimming
  • Nerfed the more intense waterfalls in Shoreline to prevent repeated drownings
  • More pearls near Scav tolls in Garbage Wastes
  • More food in central Garbage Wastes
  • More food in central Shaded Citadel
  • More karma flowers in world
  • Karma gate requirements on the Shaded Citadel, Drainage System and Underhang side were lowered to prevent players becoming stuck in challenging regions
  • Food / karma flowers regeneration now ticks forward on deaths (helps eliminate stuck / starvation situations at low karma)
  • Players will now keep map progress between deaths (Id say 99.5% of people asked for this)
  • Map now features gate karma symbols and shelter icons when locations are discovered
  • Karma depletion on game exit removed if done within 30 seconds of sleep cycle
  • Full karma drop on exit bug fixed (that was a brutal one, sheesh!)
  • Intro cinematic is now skippable by holding start / esc
  • For players having issues with Grey Screen of Death and starting the game from save files, you can now entirely skip loading the intro by holding "s" when pressing "New Game." hopefully this helps until we have a real fix!
  • Many many minor room fixes

Stability improvements:

  • Map loading bug fixed (was causing the corrupted savs, ugh)
  • Gate crashing bug fixed
  • Assorted stability improvements

The team also says it expects to deliver more patches and eventually new content.

News:: Big ol' Bethesda sale: Cheap Dishonored 2, Elder Scrolls Online, and more

It's a weekend filled with big Bethesda sales across multiple digital retailers. After a quick look, the best deal resides at GMG where it is beating out Steam and Bundle Stars on pricing. News:: Recent Mass Effect: Andromeda patch fixes those 'tired eyes'

When the most recent patch for Mass Effect: Andromeda dropped, some of you probably noticed an innocuous little detail: "Improved lip-sync and facial acting during some conversations, including localized VO."

As one of the most contested elements of Andromeda, the facial and body animations, particularly for Sara Ryder, were pretty dang awful and somehow even worse than the older Mass Effect trilogy. Some folks, even one storied animator, surmised that a bad algorithm system was to blame.

Well, Andromeda is now on its way to basically reaching acceptable levels in terms of visual polish (they call this update 1.05, but to me, it's more like 0.50), as the infamous "tired eyes" NPC among others have been fixed. You can see the difference for yourself below, and although everything still isn't copacetic, it's a start.

News:: Review: Rivals of Aether

"Smash clone" is an ugly generalization. It's usually given to titles in a subgenre which, honestly, should be a lot more prominent than it is. Despite many tries, non-Nintendo developers have yet to nail the platform fighter. What most of these developers fail to realize is beneath Super Smash Bros.' mascot appeal lies a base appealing to both casual party goers and more dedicated players.

Rivals of Aether is going to mean more to the latter. Welcoming comparisons to the aforementioned Super Smash Bros. (even going so far as to challenge it in some areas), Rivals of Aether is a platform fighter stripping away most of Smash Bros' zanier elements while focusing on a stronger, speedier, brutal core.

News:: Sparc, CCP's first non-EVE game, is shaping up as a real sport

For CCP, a company that made $86 million in revenue last year, getting out of the EVE comfort zone is a pretty big deal. Sparc (not to be confused with Project Spark) is doing just that, with the aim of providing an entire new VR-centric sport.

In typical CCP fashion they're working very slowly, but based on what I've played at Fanfest, even an early build shows a lot of promise.

News:: Square Enix says it'll prioritize the Nintendo Switch over the Xbox Scorpio

While publishers like Ubisoft are dragging their feet when it comes to the Switch (the only thing out and on the horizon are old ports), others are going in two feet first. One such company is Square Enix, who announced multiple games during the Switch's launch stream (new and old), and is poised to release the coveted Seiken Densetsu collection on the platform later this year.

When asked by Japanese outlet Nikkei whether or not they will consider keeping up the pace, all signs point to "yes." In addition to talking about how successful DLC has been for them (especially for Final Fantasy XV), they also interestingly note that Japan, China, and North America are 80% of the smartphone market (the Middle East and India are next on the docket), they're most interested in developing products for the Switch. When asked whether or not any new platforms, including the Scorpio or Windows 10 updates or Google's Tango system have priority, Square Enix responded with "Switch," and that they want work more with it in the future.

It's all good news for Nintendo, for sure. Even if some western organizations aren't sold yet, Japan is investing heavily in the Switch to help facilitate its success.

News:: Darksiders Warmastered is still warring on Wii U, releases next month

When the remaster of Darksiders was announced for Wii U, many people were shocked. Releasing anything for Wii U is surprising, but with Nintendo ceasing production of the console, any title may very well end up the final game on the system. There hasn't been a big hit for Wii U in ages and it looked like Darksiders: Warmastered Edition had fallen by the way side.

Fear not, as THQ Nordic has announced that the remaster will be seeing the light of day on Nintendo's last-gen box. Releasing on May 23 (a few weeks after World to the West is set to arrive), this game is sure to be the final game on the platform. You'll be able to get Warmastered Edition for $19.99 (£14.99), so even the price isn't bad.

News:: 'Candy Crush Saga' devs are making a mobile 'Call of Duty' game

King, the developer behind Candy Crush Saga, is working on a Call of Duty game for mobile. Describing the project as part of a job listing for the company's Stockholm studio, King said it will "strive to transform the best console experience fans know and love, while also breaking new ground for mobile and redefining the genre."

Call of Duty-owner Activision Blizzard bought King for just under $6 billion in 2015, but since the acquisition the developer has continued to focus mostly on its free-to-play Saga games. The new project will mark the first time King works on an Activision property, and, if successful, it could open the door for future mobile tie-ins for the company's other famous franchises like Destiny and Overwatch.

Virtually nothing is known about the game -- not genre, not release window, not platforms. What we do know is that, while King says it's "collaborating on this project" with its parent company, it also says that it'll be responsible for "prototyping extensively," adding that staff "have the freedom to think outside the box," and will "be encouraged to stretch their expertise in ways to create surprising results," suggesting that it's King that will lead development.

News:: Ha, Konami is doing another Castlevania pachislot machine

I love how trolly the below commercial is.

You open it, see the text, and hear the classic Castlevania music. It's so easy to get fired up, like maybe, just maybe Konami is coming out with a competitor for Bloodstained. But nope, it is Konami after all -- it's just another pachislot teaser. The video portion will seemingly feature new cutscene work, proving that Konami won't just can your project, they'll resurrect it and parade its shambling corpse around on strings.

Sitting at a 10x dislike ratio with closed comments on the video, Konami likely knows what's up.

News:: Are you buying the new Xbox One?

This is Podtoid 365, which means if you had the entire back catalog, you could listen to one episode every day for an entire year. We didn't do anything special for that, but that won't stop me from pointing out the next arbitrary milestone we hit. Probably at 369 [Damn she fine -Ed.], because it will make me hum Schoolhouse Rock! to myself.

Microsoft just released the specs (but, vitally, not the price) of its new Xbox One model, the souped up "Project Scorpio," so we took a moment to catalog the cast's interest in buying a new Xbox. We also talked about a few video games, like Snake Pass and Destiny's Age of Triumph event, but mostly we talked about volcanoes, ballistics, car chases, and group sex. We rounded it out with an extended listener question section, a pretty good SATPOTPAQ, and a Hot Dish focused on bad Metacritic user reviews.

News:: 'Orcs Must Die! Unchained' arrives April 19 with competitive mode

Robot Entertainment is finally ready to launch its latest PC game, Orcs Must Die: Unchained. The title, which has been in an open beta since last year, arrives on April 19th with a new head-to-head mode called "Sabotage." The veteran team of ex-Halo Wars developers foreshadowed the feature last year, after first trialing a MOBA concept with tower-defense elements. "One of the things that's important to me is to maintain our humor and our feel," designer Jerome Jones said at the time.

News:: Choice Provisions says the Switch is easier to develop for, gets Runner3 working in one day

Nintendo systems have gotten a lot of flak when it comes to bad developer policies. Many devs have spoken posthumously about the poor monetization contract for the WiiWare platform, and the issues of developing for systems like the Wii U. The Switch, however, by design, is changing that entire landscape. Among many other studios who have said the same, Choice Provisions has come out in favor of Nintendo's new console/portable.

Speaking to Autodesk, Josh Defries of Choice Provisions explains: "We were nervous at first about developing for the Switch, simply because there are always unknowns with new platforms. We ended up getting the game running on the console in only a day, however, and it's been smooth sailing ever since!"

It's been smoothing sailing in general for Nintendo, who is riding high on the Switch. Hell, it could outsell the Wii U in just a year's time if it keeps up this pace. Nintendo has the backend all sorted out it seems, but it still has some work to go on the consumer side -- there's some hardware kinks to work out, among other problems like the complete lack of a Virtual Console.

News:: A second TV show about video games is coming to Dave

The glory days of GamesMaster might be long gone, but finally it seems there's renewed interest in video game-focused programming. Broadcaster UKTV has announced the second series of Go 8 Bit will begin airing on Dave on May 15th, and what's more, it'll be joined by a new spin-off show that takes a slightly more serious approach to games coverage. Go 8 Bit, hosted by Dara Ó Briain and games journo Ellie Gibson, pits button-bashing comedians and other celebs against each other in various video game challenges. The appropriately titled Go 8 Bit DLC, on the other hand, will complement that with "lively debates and reviews."

News:: Puyo Puyo Tetris will not have the same streaming restrictions as Persona 5 in the west

After the Persona 5 debacle, where even western users dealt with crazy streaming restrictions, folks posited that Sega was starting to make it a habit. I mean, they just confirmed this week that Puyo Puyo Tetris would suffer the same fate, but according to Sega itself, that only applies to Japan.

Upon reaching out to Sega, we got the following statement: "We highly encourage our American and European fans to stream the game when it comes out (there are no PS4 share button restrictions). We want them to share their experiences with the world, but we do ask them to please be conscious of revealing Adventure Mode story cutscenes."

Having read many pre-release restriction conditions before, it's no surprise that Sega errs on the safe side. Many Japanese publishers have been pretty rigid with their copyrights and streaming restrictions, and Sega is often at the top of the list, especially with rights-heavy rhythm games like the Miku series. It's going to be a while before the east wholly accepts the concept of streaming -- as my colleague Josh Tolentino points out, many of them equate it with piracy.
