News:: Here's how Xbox One games will handle mouse and keyboard support

Microsoft has been promising mouse and keyboard support on the Xbox One for ages, but it's finally getting close. As part of a PAX West panel, the company's Mike Ybarra revealed that the first Xbox One games to support these peripherals are coming "soon," and that the company already has an idea as to how it'll handle support. A lot of it will be "up to developer choice," Ybarra says, but Microsoft will "coach" studios to make sure they add the feature responsibly -- it's aware that there are potential balance problems.

News:: This trailer for the Chuck Tingle game is going to pound you in the butt

Chuck Tingle, the Hugo-nominated author of such contemporary classics as Bigfoot Sommelier Butt Tasting, Anally Yours, the Unicorn Sailor, and Pokebutt Go: Pounded by 'Em All is making a dating game. I know what you're thinking, "What?! Chuck Tingle, who was once legitimately nominated for a Hugo award for Space Raptor Butt Invasion, is making a video game?"

Yes, that is correct. Chuck Tingle, who again, I cannot stress enough, was once up for the same award won by I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, is making an FMV-dating-adventure game set in the Tingleverse, which is like the Dark Universe only less gay. Expected to be as short as a Chuck Tingle page-turner, the game's art direction will mimic Tingle's signature stock photo cover art masterpieces while delivering a message of positivity, love, self-acceptance, dicks, and butts.

Now you might be wondering what a Chuck Tingle game will be like. Will it feature Tingle's soft, sensual voice? Will it somehow utilize the Ph.D. in holistic massage he received from DeVry? Will it be a complete waste of money? Luckily, those questions and more have been answered by the pre-alpha trailer that dropped today.

News:: Sun Bakery pays tribute to Metroid, being God and sword-based fighting games

Remember the ill-fated Destructoid magazine? Jeez, that was fun while it lasted, but it's a darn crime that we didn't get to make more. While it may have died practically before the first issue ever went to print, a lot of good things still came of it. One of those things is Arem's Undersea Adventure, the second story in Corey Lewis's ongoing Metroid parody/tribute. Arem Lightstorm is basically Samus Aran but with the bounty hunting swapped out for alien nature photography. Picture a Metroid game where your main goal is to scan and photograph everything with your visor, then post your pics online. That's pretty much Arem in a nutshell.

Arem's Undersea Adventure was originally commissioned for Destructoid Magazine, but it's now been reprinted in full for the Sun Bakery: Fresh Collection, published by Image comics. It's a whopper alright, weighing in at over 200 pages; the bulk of which are dominated by Dream Skills, a +70 page epic taking place in a world where guns are rendered totally useless, thereby bringing on the return of sword play to everyday life.

Not only that, but everyone who wields a sword can also level up by beating other fighters, who are all protected by auras of spiritual energy that prevent them from being instantly killed by what would otherwise be fatal wounds. In short, the story uses the same kind of logic found in sword-based fighting games like Samurai Showdown and Soul Calibur, though overall the tale feels much more like Rival Schools. That stands to reason, as Lewis wrote and drew the Rival Schools comic for Udon years ago.

I originally asked Lewis to collaborate with us on the magazine because his explosive energy, passion for games and comics, and willingness to take risks on bizarre, unheard of ideas reminds me so much of the culture that Destructoid has fostered over the years. If you like the community here, I'm pretty darn sure you're going to enjoy Sun Bakery.

News:: American McGee is ready to make Alice 3

American McGee, owner of the nation's second most patriotic name after Flaggy McStars'n'Stripes, is riding high after his successful Kickstarter campaign for the Out of the Woods card game. He's so high that, after saying plans for a new Alice game were out of his hands, he's ready to take control of the franchise once more.

Sending out a tweet at the very reasonable hour of 2:25 am, McGee announced he's polishing off a proposal to EA for the third game in the series, tentatively titled Alice: Asylum. That's it. That's all the details we have, but McGee has set up a mailing list for anyone who wants to follow along with this could be threequel. He's also planning to set up weekly live streams where fans can give feedback to the pre-production team.

News:: Splatoon 2's superpowered SplatFest results are now in

After 24 hours of inking mayhem, the results from Splatoon 2's latest SplatFest are now live. The scores were announced a little later this time as the decision was made to combine the U.S. and European totals.

In the battle of the superpowers, Flight soared to victory over Invisibilty in an incredibly close 2-1 victory. Though Invisibility took the votes, both Solo and Team turf wars went in Flight's favour.

Of the narrow victory, the SplatFest representatives had little to say. Pearl, who was backing flight, said "Blam!" although this was very intuitively counter-pointed by sore loser Marina who said "Buh-Bam!" Human chess at its very finest.

Marina, who had previously suggested that invisibility would allow you too "spy on people while they were... inking their Splat Zone", looked like she was going to cry at the final results. You probably helped that happen.

The next SplatFest in Japan will see McDonalds Fries battle McNuggets in which food item tastes less of medieval horror (probably), and begins on September 9.

News:: Buy Xbox One S 1TB, get two free games of choice at Microsoft

Last week Thursday Microsoft started up an early Labor Day sale on all things Xbox One S bundles. The deals were okay but not exactly amazing - essentially when you bought select Xbox One S 1TB bundles, you'll get two free games of choice. The games were a bit limiting and thus we shrugged our deal shoulder and carried on.

This changed last night when Microsoft decided to kick things up a notch: they are now introducing Xbox One S 500GB bundle into the mix and even adding in latest and upcoming releases into the free game choice, such as Destiny 2. Before you get super excited though we have bad news for you: Microsoft has already ran out of stock on Destiny 2 as a free choice bundle. Which is quite a shame given all their promotional picture has been updated from miscellaneous games X from last Thursday to Destiny 2 on Saturday night.

Having said that, the free game choices are still decent, with pickings such as Prey, Battlefield 1, For Honor, Injustice 2, Tekken 7, and Dark Souls II Fire Fades Edition. Both Destiny 2 and the recently released Madden 18 are out of stock, and we're not sure if Microsoft will attempt to restock them.

1TB Xbox One S Bundles + Two Free Games of Choice

After you pick your first free game of more recent title, the second free game are the usual suspect Ubisoft leftover-infinite-storage-warehouse picks such as Watch Dogs, The Division, The Crew, and who can forget Hasbro Family Fun Pack. For reference, Microsoft has been giving away these games for the past three years. Most of the deals above are still some of the best Xbox One S deals we've seen thus far this year, and the next decent round probably won't show up until holiday season later this year.

The promotion will run through September 9 before the clock strikes midnight Pacific Time. Note that select Xbox One S bundles above will grant you additional perks such as 1 month of free trial on EA Access or Xbox Game Pass. Almost all bundle comes with 14-day free trial to Xbox Live Gold, and additional savings come in the form of $10 savings in Xbox Live Gold 3-month subscription or an additional Xbox One S controller.

Given the Xbox One wireless controller have been discounted by more than $10 before (typically $20 off to $39.99 during a seasonal sale), we'd suggest waiting on that unless there's some co-op title that you must play this very week.

News:: What game do you most regret selling or trading in?

I have a troubled history with collecting games. Growing up, I lived in one console household until both my brother and I were in high school. So when we got our NES, that is all we had. When it came time to move up to the SNES, we sold our 8-bit wonder and all of its games to pay for the new system. When the PlayStation came into fashion, we traded in the SNES to Funcoland to pay for it. It wasn't until the PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast were available that my brother and I were able to have our own consoles as well as our own TV sets.

With my Dreamcast, I finally had a choice. As a teenager with a job, I didn't need to trade in anything to pay for something new, but there was a problem: the practice had already imprinted on my brain. Three generations of starting from scratch will do that. So I kept with my habit of trading in the old for the new. When the Dreamcast was discontinued, I traded it in and put the money towards a GameCube. The GameCube led to the Wii and the Wii to the Wii U.

I've wasted a lot of fucking money on games I should never have purchased, and I've wasted far too much on games I gave up on before I had the chance to truly experience them. In the Destructoid Slack chat, this topic was brought up as I lamented my decision to trade in my copy of Cubivore -- stupid, stupid CJ! -- and I thought it would make a great topic for a Destructoid Discusses question. I was going to talk about my regret in getting rid of that game, or Opoona which I somehow bought brand new for $9, but as I write this lede I realize I'm still not over trading in my Dreamcast.

Fuck me I was carelessly shortsighted with that one! I had the system, two of those awesome VMU memory cards, two controllers and the following kick-ass games: Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Marvel vs. Capcom, NFL 2K1, Crazy TaxiReady 2 Rumble Boxing and Space Channel 5. All of them wonderful games, all of them I would play today, all of them gone. My anger at Sega for discontinuing the product so soon after I got it for Christmas clouded my judgment and made me miss out on so many other titles I could have enjoyed. I didn't even get a chance to try Jet Set Radio or Shenmue.

I have a lot of trade-in regrets, but nothing causes me to lose sleep like my idiotic decision to get rid of my Dreamcast collection.

News:: I'm definitely importing Bandai Namco's upcoming Kamen Rider fighting game

It's pretty hard being a Western tokusatsu fan. While there are now multiple legal ways of streaming anime outside of Japan, there's still no way to get legal versions of tokusatsu series like Super Sentai (of which Saban's Power Rangers is based) and Kamen Rider. Because of this, it's even more unlikely we'll ever get any of the games based on their properties.

Having to import one of the Kamen Rider musou games did hurt my heart and wallet, and it looks like I'll be doing that again with Kamen Rider: Climax Fighters. Releasing on PS4 in Japan December 7, the game is some kind of four player arena fighter. There'll be more details and a full trailer revealed soon, but I'm interested in the new marquee Rider, Kamen Rider Build, because of his slick design that totally looks like Kamen Rider W.

News:: Nightmare Creatures is coming back, hopefully better than ever

In one of the more absurd announcements this year, Albino Moose, the company behind Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion: HD Renovation, announced they're working on a brand new Nightmare Creatures, set both before and after the events of the 1997 original (with the intentionally wonky visuals to match). Apparently, according to their panel at PAX West, the Nightmare Creatures IP was just floating around after Activision dropped it long ago.

Nightmare Creatures was a game I once rented on a whim because of its dope (for the 90s anyway) cover. I remember loving it as kid, but I just looked up some of its gameplay and it's much rougher than I remembered. But this announcement is exciting nonetheless as it's going to be a reboot for fans, by fans.

Anyone have good Nightmare Creatures memories? If anything, it's sent me down rental store memory lane and now I have a huge smile on my face. The new Nightmare Creatures is planned for a current console and PC release.

News:: Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was influenced by The Fifth Element

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is one of the most beautifully bizarre Nintendo collaborations in recent memory, but it’s blatantly clear a whole lot of love went into it. One can’t help but question how something so far out of left field came to be, and Did You Know Gaming drops some wonderful, behind-the-scenes facts about the game’s history.

Apparently, Ubisoft started prototyping a collaboration between the two franchises as far back as 2010, but the original concept was more of an adventure game. However, the project was later scrapped for unconfirmed reasons. The concept art from the time does look fairly similar to what ended up appearing in the later version though.

News:: Top HDTV deals for this Labor Day weekend (updated)

Update: Last year we rounded up ten of the best HDTV deals for Labor Day weekend - because that's a thing us Americans do when we have a national holiday: furniture and big bulky items goes cheap. Instead of tossing in yet another round-up, we decided to update the post below with some of the latest pickings.

Noteworthy is that 4K is now the main trend, even at the under $500 price point (granted these aren't exactly top-end models or brands). In the pricier section, you'll find LG, Samsung, and even Sony HDTVs.

--

We usually keep the HDTV deal lists to our weekend post roundups (tucked away in the bottom, for those unaware) - but this Labor Day weekend we've spotted a good number of offers. What better way to honor the labor movement by spending mindlessly on big ticket electronics!?

Joke aside, if you're not happy with your gaming TV because or need to upgrade eventually for the eventual Neo/Scorpio, we've rounded up deals from high-end $1,000+ 4K UHDTVs, to budget friendly under-$500 HDTV deals.

Under $500 4K Ultra HDTV

LG HDTVs (43 to 65-inch)

Samsung HDTVs (50 to 65-inch)

Ridiculous Size 4K Ultra HDTVs

Budget HDTVs

Most of the deals listed above comes from Best Buy, your big box retailer for all things holiday promotion related. Beyond the Sony, LG, and Samsung, you've also got house brands such as Insignia and less known brands such as Hisense.

The high-end models will come with 240Hz panels while the lower-end picks are at 60Hz, so if you really are buying these for gaming, we'd double check the specs on each TV before you break out the wallet.

News:: Sonic Mania contains tribute to game modder who passed away

The critically acclaimed and fan-pleasing Sonic Mania title features a tribute to a deceased member of the Sonic the Hedgehog modding community.

Lava Reef Zone's stunt-jumpin' boss Heavy Rider is a mace wielding knight who attacks the players astride her high-octane motobug, Jimmy. This is a reference to Sonic community modder "Polygon Jim", who was tragically killed in a car crash in 2003.

One of Polygon Jim's best-known works was Motobug the Badnik in Sonic the Hedgehog, a game variant where players would control a version of the classic Sonic enemy as they amusingly trundled through the stage, able to jump obstacles by extending their wheel, ala Heavy-Rider's mount.

It's a small but beautiful gesture, just one more way that Sonic Mania continues to be a genuine love letter, not only to the series itself, but to the fans that have kept the franchise name alive through the good times and the bad.

News:: 'The Division' finally adds to its open-world game map

After spending much of the past year upgrading The Division's core gameplay and its player-versus-player content, Ubisoft is ready to turn its attention to fresh player-versus-environment material -- and that finally includes a new area to play in. The free Resistance update will add the West Side Pier, a two-zone map expansion that includes its own social space and unusual combat environments like the USS Intrepid. And importantly, this isn't just more of the usual AI grind. In a livestream, Ubi revealed that there will be frequent alerts for new events, short-term mini assignments (new ones will pop up every 15 to 20 minutes) and dynamic enemy spawning. If you finish those smaller tasks, you'll get the same Division Tech resources that you would normally have to earn in the PvP Dark Zone area.
