News::Alien: Isolation art seems to show Ripley's daughter

Artwork for the trademarked but not-officially-announced Alien: Isolation has been discovered by NeoGAF. In addition to the image above, there's what looks to be the game's box art, viewable below. It's a miniscule picture, but I like the look of it -- not that cover art has any bearing whatsoever on the quality of the software it's attempting to sell us on.

Isolation is thought to be developed by Total War studio Creative Assembly and reportedly stars the daughter of franchise icon Ellen Ripley. I don't know exactly what her offspring might look like, but if I had to go out on a limb, I'd say the woman depicted on the box art looks about right.

Bethesda just uploaded these new screenshots for the upcoming Wolfenstein: The New Order. We just can't comment on this game. The screenshots look good, but the gameplay we have seen feels just OK, nothing special. Maybe we are totally wrong and the game is awesome, but till now, we are not impressed. Also these screens might offend people who live in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. So we are sorry if these offend you in any way.

News::Ubisoft on 'Assassin's Creed' in Paris: Devs 'will have little margin for error'

Whether you're a consumer, developer, publisher or just plain fan of the Assassin's Creed franchise, one of the most enjoyable things to discuss is what would be a great time period and location for the next Assassin's Creed installment. Earlier this year, Examiner.com spoke with the game director of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Ashraf Ismail and he thought it would be fun to see what the Assassin's Creed world would be like in Egypt. An intriguing setting that would be for a future iteration, and there are so many more. Recently, Examiner.com had the chance to speak exclusively with Ubisoft North America President Laurent Detoc about what it would be like and why a development team has never tackled an open-world game that is set in Paris.

News::Opinion: Storytelling Should be what this Generation is Remembered for

Ben Skipper: "With better visuals, larger audiences and bigger budgets, the sense of scale in games escalated dramatically. Indie games also thrived with the boom of Xbox LIVE Arcade, PSN and Steam giving a platform to many of the generations most unique titles. Perhaps best of all, however, gaming began to fully-realise its potential as a story-telling medium. Great stories have always been told in games, but only in recent years have games explored what they can offer that other mediums simply cannot."

News::Mikami: It's become harder to make players afraid

I've got high hopes for Tango Gameworks' The Evil Within . It's the return of Shinji Mikami and, hopefully, big-budget survival horror. Games like Outlast have scared us silly, but it's also possible to point to series like Dead Space as evidence that gamers are quick to catch on. Once we discover the game's behind-the-scenes logic, it's all over. No more suspension of disbelief.

"Not much has changed when it comes to instilling terror in the player," Mikami told Edge. "But people have got used to the tropes of horror and they know what's coming next, so in that sense it is harder to make them afraid."

What's the solution? He didn't elaborate. But based on what Tango has shown of The Evil Within, the key seems to lie in creating a sense of tension where we're left holding on for dear life. Seemingly unstoppable forces like Boxman will help there. I'm more concerned about the action-oriented elements and how they'll be balanced with the game's survival horror.

News::Colossal Shadow of the Colossus fan art is just that

DeviantArt member Andrew McGee has visualized each of the various Colossi from Shadow of the Colossus into one image, showing exactly how they compare to one another in scale. It's a breathtaking image, especially when you consider how large your own character is in comparison, let alone how big these dang things would be in real life. Man, that underground still gives me creep-crawly nightmares.

Epic does not begin to describe the scope of all of them together, but if you'd so chose, you can adorn your wall with a poster size print from here, or just check out the hi-res version from Andrew's DeviantArt page.

News::The LEGO Movie Videogame based on The LEGO Movie

I'm so woefully out of touch with modern film news that I had no idea an animated feature was on the way which centered on the world of LEGO, but it very certainly is. And what would a family-oriented major motion picture release be without the announcement of a game based on said major motion picture?

So it is that we have The LEGO Movie Videogame, coming in February to nearly every modern device capable of playing a videogame. It looks like more of what we've come to expect from the Traveler's Tales series of games centered on the globally loved construction blocks, with a less clearly defined content focus. Even the least enjoyable LEGO games in recent years have wound up being tolerable, which is about where my expectations lay for this one.

News::GOG.com to introduce 30-day full refunds for broken games

In another welcome move, GOG.com will start giving 100% refunds on its games, if gamers are unable to run them. This moves follows EA's similar move to give refunds on first-party games on Origin earlier in the year. If support teams are unable to get a purchased game functioning properly, then customers are eligible for the refund within 30 days or purchase.

It's a good move and whilst some may say GOG.com don't go far enough, its no-DRM policy could result in many users buying games, playing them quickly, and then demanding a refund. Indeed, the company calls this move "an act of trust" as they cannot stop players from playing a title after potentially receiving a refund.

As someone who has a laptop filled with games bought from GOG.com, I haven't had any issues with any titles I've bought. PC gaming being the fickle beast that it is means that's not going to be the case for everyone and this step to provide refunds is very welcome. Of course it's all going to come down to how well their customer support responds to queries but I'd hope they're already set up for this.

News::Teen gets took for £450: Bought a photo of an Xbox One

Remember when everyone was afraid to buy online because they didn't want to get took? Well, scammers are happy that buying online has generally worked out, allowing people to let their guard down while they grift.

A 19-year old Nottingham resident fell for the whole "sell a picture of an expensive thing" con, the Nottingham Post reports. Instead of a new Xbox One for his four-year old, he got a picture that looked like it came out of a printer with low ink levels.

Fortunately for him, he received a full refund, while the seller has been banned from eBay.

I guess, in the end, he Xbox won.

News::Metro Last Light Comes To Linux, And It Largely Survives The Transition

"When Metro: Last Light released earlier this year, it was a revelation. The sequel to the promising Metro 2033 took everything that was good about that game, removed everything that wasn't, and gave us a sequel so improved that it rivals Assassin's Creed II, Killzone 2, or Uncharted 2 in terms of the reinvigorating effect it had on its franchise."

News::XCOM: Enemy Within Review | Mac|Life

Running a clandestine agency devoted to fighting diabolical alien invaders is tough, but as XCOM: Enemy Unknown taught us, it gets a lot easier if you can steal things out of the enemy's playbook. And when those things include extreme genetic modifications and hulking robot exoskeletons two of the biggest features introduced by the Enemy Within expansion the fight doesn't necessarily get easier, but it does get a lot more interesting.
