News::GOG.com begins its Battle of the Games promo

Over the next week, GOG.com will pit trios of PC games against each other for the sake of discounts in its Battle of the Games promo. Users will vote on titles they like and the winners will be marked 75 percent off for 24 hours, while the losers aren't terribly far behind at 60 percent off.

Today's available games don't jump out at me too much, but that's not to say they won't speak to you. They very well might! There's Heroes of Might and Magic I - III for $2.49 each, The Witcher for $1.99, The Witcher 2 for $3.99, and Blackguards: Special Edition for $22.49.

Tomorrow's deals will include either Red Faction or Unreal / Unreal Tournament. The latter group is on track to win by a large margin. As it should be.

News::Review: Half-Minute Hero: The Second Coming

The original Half-Minute Hero was a very special and intriguing game. It boiled down an entire genre to its barest essentials, reducing the interminably long JRPG to just thirty seconds of gameplay.

Both a heartfelt tribute and pointed critique, the bite-sized adventure brimmed with self-referential humor. It trot out just about every trope in the book, firing on all cylinders with a lengthy series of inside jokes and clever witticisms. Smart, familiar, and charming; it appealed to both fans of the genre and detractors alike in a way that so few games do.

Humor often has diminishing returns though. Even the funniest quip can lose some of its luster the second time around. And in that regard, Half-Minute Hero: The Second Coming isn't quite as remarkable as its predecessor. Luckily, the deconstructionist RPG has upped its game in other arenas.

News::PS Plus adds Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse tomorrow

When the North American PlayStation Store updates tomorrow, PS Plus subscribers will be able to download Sega's Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse remake on PS3 for free. Like the other featured titles this month, this is worth playing -- particularly given that it's so short.

If, like me, you'd just as well play the original Sega Genesis game of the same name instead, though, we're both in luck. Subscribers who download Castle of Illusion in the next two weeks will also get the 1990 Genesis game and a Mizrabel dynamic theme at no extra charge.

Elsewhere on the PS Store tomorrow, there will be discounts on Traveller's Tales' LEGO games, from DC Super Heroes to Lord of the Rings to the newer Marvel super Heroes.
