News::Star Trek Review (ITF Gaming)

Bracken Lee-Rudolph from ITF Gaming writes: Star Trek was a title I went into with very little hope of it being good, because it is a dreaded movie tie-in to Star Trek Into Darkness. However, what I was hoping for something akin to Beenoxs 2012 tie-in to The Amazing Spider-Man, a video-game that, while not perfect, delivered an entertaining distraction and a relevant continuation of the films storyline. Unfortunately, this was not what I got, as Star Trek feels like a half-baked, badly-built and horribly-written excuse for a video game, and in the next several hundred words, I will tell you why:

News::Borderlands 2 developer gifts fans with free in-game items all weekend long

To start out the weekend on a positive note, Gearbox Software gave out new SHiFT Codes on Friday for Borderlands 2. Every system has its own code and each redemption gifts a player a single golden key which can be traded for rare gear inside the game. SHiFT Codes can be redeemed in the Borderlands 2 main menu. After doing so, fans will have a golden key automatically on their Vault Hunter the next time they enter the game. These keys can be stored up and are used to open a special loot chest found within the city of Sanctuary. Opening the chest consumes a single golden key and grants the player a rare piece of level-appropriate gear.

News::Anamanguchi wants make Endless Fantasy even bigger

Anamanaguchi just finished Endless Fantasy, their new 22-track record that's been in the works for the last three years. This is not the end of the story though, as Anamanguchi wants to go BIG.

The chiptune band has put up a Kickstarter with the goal of raising $50,000 to make more awesome music videos like the one for MEOW, the first single off of Endless Fantasy. The band has reached their goal already, but any extra funding will go towards making even more cool things. More music videos, better promotion, better tour lighting, collaborations with other artists, and merchandising.

Some of the higher tier backer rewards are pretty cool too. Rewards include having the band teach you how to make sweet chiptune jams, give you their custom modded tour NES or Game Boys, the cat head 4chan's Moot wore in the MEOW music video, and creating your own personal theme song. There's even a reward where they'll play a show at your house and give you their sh*tty van.

News::Something About Japan: Shuhei Yoshida on the ‘war for the living room’

Image credit: 4Gamer.net

Japanese game news site 4Gamer.net sat down with Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida this week to canvass his thoughts on the future of the game industry – and how PS4 will fit in with it.

He also detailed limitations of the Share button and explained how Sony intends to make PS4 more attractive to consumers and to developers.

To begin, Yoshida confirmed that Sony’s goal when announcing PS4 at the PlayStation Meeting in February was to establish the machine first and foremost as a console for gaming – but that the console would not budge from its place beneath the TV set.

“In terms of the ‘war for the living room’, we have no intention of abandoning that approach. After all, Sony is a company that has a long history of making audio-visual products that are designed for the living room, so this is a natural course for us. If anything it’s the other companies that have changed course by moving into this space.”

Rather than a dig at Nintendo or Microsoft, this appeared to be a reference to Apple and Valve, both of which are slowly revolutionising the way we consume digital content, and the rise of smart TV.

“Recently there has been a lot of talk about smart TV and devices that can also play games,” he said. “When we first introduced PS4, we wanted to avoid giving the message that it can also do this and can also do that. We wanted to show a focus on just the most important aspect of the console.

“We want to change for the better the way people play games and the way people make games. Yes, you can use this console for things like watching a Blu-ray or Netflix, but that is not its main purpose. The hardware is designed specifically for games. After all, new games will never be in short supply.”

Asked specifically how he would like to change the way games are made and played, Yoshida said: “I’d like to emphasise ease of use. How the controls feel, how much time you spend waiting around for it to turn on and off, things like that. It’s about giving more consideration to the user experience. On portable smartphones and tablets, you can start playing as soon as you want to and quit whenever you like. PS4 will be a home console that can do that too.”

Yoshida explained that Sony’s challenge with PS4 was less about cramming it with top-spec innards and hitherto unimagined new features but instead to make it friendlier for third-party developers to make games for.

“Even we (SCE Worldwide Studios) had a hard time developing for PS3 (at first). But third parties had real trouble developing or porting games, because (the system) was so different. Of course, the PS3 is still showing unrealised potential with new games today. It’s difficult to believe that games like The Last Of Us and Beyond: Two Souls are running on exactly the same hardware as those early games. Those developers have studied hard to make a great PS3 game. But it’s taken a long time (for developers) to reach this point. This time we’re considering how to create a better development environment for third parties from the start.”

Yoshida confirmed that inclusion of PS4’s massive 8GB RAM was a response to demand from developers who had struggled with PS3’s sparse RAM. But he also stated that specs are not the only consideration in making PS4 a system that is easy to develop for.

“There is a saying that the ease of making something goes hand in hand with the ease of doing business. So we want to make it easier to do business and to build an ecosystem.”

Yoshida admitted that it is getting harder to secure big-budget exclusives for any given console, with third-party developers mitigating the growing cost of console game production by taking their titles multiplatform to reach the widest possible audience. This in turn makes it harder for platform-holders to differentiate their console from the competition.

“In that case,” he said, “we need to make sure users consider the PS4 version to be the best and the one they want to play. That might mean that the graphics are better, the controller is more comfortable, or the point I mentioned earlier about the console being more user-friendly, like you don’t have to turn the power on and off or you can switch between your game and Netflix at will. Those things will become key.”

Yoshida explained that the origin of the Share button, which will allow PS4 owners to upload video from their game at almost any time, was rooted in this concept too.

“We were trying to think of a way to make it easier for users to upload video, and one day a member of our in-house production team just said, ‘How about a Share button?’ We called out in unison, ‘That’s it!’”

Yoshida’s own desire to make videos easy to share was a result of his addiction to Dark Souls, clips of which he would seek out on Japanese video-sharing site Niconico Douga. “I wanted to play Dark Souls all day long, but I couldn’t do that because I was too busy. So instead I would watch people playing it live on Niconico whenever I had some spare time. By doing that, you can find other ways to play the game and read comments by other users. I felt that sharing videos is a really important part of enjoying games.”

He said that the Share button will have its limitations, however, and that users will not quite have free reign to upload whatever in-game footage they like.

“There will be parts of a game that the maker does not want people to be able to see,” he said. “For example, on Vita, developers can in certain scenes disable the feature that lets users take a screenshot, and (the Share function) will have a similar mechanism. The creator may not want to make video of the final boss sharable, for instance.”

News::Tyranny of King Washington: The Redemption Review I Expansive

Continuing on from where the second installment ended, the third and final installment of the Assassins Creed DLC continues with Ratohnhake:tons, or Connors (which is much easier to say and spell) mission to stop King George Washington and restore peace to a nation that has fallen under his terrible rule as part of this alternate history epic. Right from the get-go you are back in New York Harbour aboard the Aquila. The action starts straight away and the first order of business is a battle at sea. Nothing new here if youve played the main game, but its a nice change of pace to indulge in a bit of naval warfare. With the next Assassins Creed outing being Black Flag based on a pirating mission, this was an invaluable pre-test for Ubisoft to make sure theyve got those features spot on for a major release.

News::Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Overview I Expansive

The most unusual thing about Blood Dragon is that Ubisoft insist it is related to Far Cry 3. How these games match up is anyones guess. Fortunately, this confusion is a secret weapon for Blood Dragon. It plays in a slightly familiar way to one of last years most beloved games, but it has a finesse and gameplay style that is unlike anything else out there right now. Rex Colt is a cyborg enhanced soldier developed from pasts future and falls somewhere between Kano and Jax in terms of his look, but is full of puns that would make an 80s Schwarzenegger blush.

News::Game Preview - Anomaly 2 - - Blackman 'N Robin

When Anomaly: Warzone Earth was released back during the beginning of 2012, the title received great praise for everything it did correctly, and the content it brought gamers was unparallelled to most of the other titles that were competing in the same market. Anomaly not only gave gamers eye candy with very vivd and colorful graphics- even for the consoles it was released on- but complemented its visuals with an amazing soundtrack, meaty gameplay, and even a story that wasnt dull enough to get gamers to quit. In addition to that is how well made the code of the game itself was- it ran quite well on each of the systems that it was released on during the same timeframe.

News::IGN- Mars War Logs Review

IGN:Mars: War Logs isn't a great RPG, but it is at least the seed of one and a seed with some surprisingly green shoots sticking out of it, given that it's an attempt to pull off an epic in the style of Mass Effect or The Witcher 2 on a fraction of the budget. "I tell ya, nobody loved Dishonored more than me. Well ok, I suppose the fellow over there with the Corvo bedsheets and rubber mask did, as well as the people who actually got the platinum trophy ok, I suppose I just really liked Dishonored. For good reason, though; it was an incredibly flexible game, allowing players to get creative and express themselves via a robust set of mechanics, and it was atmospheric and nicely stylized to boot. Its only major drawback was a weak story, one with drab characters and a protagonist whom Arkane Studios couldnt decide on being a vehicle for players to project onto or a traditionally likable hero in a revenge story. Fast forward to today, when the first story-focused downloadable content for the game has been released. Titled Knife of Dunwall, the DLC stars Daud, the guilt-ridden assassin who killed the Empress and essentially sparked Corvos journey. Does this add-on continue to provide stealthy and supernatural fun, or is this knife duller...
