News::Artist's Battle With Disease Has Inspired Others To Push Their Limits

News::New thatgamecompany title will relate to a wider audience

Ah, Journey. I thought I was a total latecomer, having picked it up during a holiday sale late last year -- but thatgamecompany's thoughtful PlayStation 3 game continues to sell well. "We made the money back last year, then this year we see royalties coming in," company president Jenova Chen told The Telegraph. "It seems like the Journey sales are not going away."

Offering a few more hints about the team's next project, which can be "put on any platform we want" thanks to funding via venture capital and internal IP ownership, Chen said that "It's been almost a year now and we are still in a very pre, pre-production mode. It's always been the pattern of thatgamecompany that we spent 75 percent of time doing R&D and a smaller portion of time on production. When we go for a particular goal we have to do a lot of trial and error. It can feel like you are reaching out in the fog trying to find something."

Continuing: "The next game after Journey is like, ok we've done it with strangers on the internet, can this also happen among people who know each other. It's a natural evolution of everything we are doing," Chen commented. "Our next game is going to be something that will relate to a wide audience on a human level. It is very exciting to see my own maturing and the team's maturing and I’m curious to see what this next game could be."

Without a clear source of funding post-Journey, the studio had to cut everybody but the founders. Now that it's been secured, "we hired people back, right now we are 14 people and still growing." Which is terrific news, as a fan of their games. My only real fear had been that a lack of money would kill the dream. Glad that's not a concern for the time being.

News::DICE Multiplayer Producer Talks Dynamic Maps, Networking, Current and Next-Gen and More - AusGamers

AusGamers spoke with Battlefield 4's Multiplayer Producer, Aleksander Grøndal, who ran them through details on the new dynamic map features, both large and small, as well as networking on PC and next-gen console, player numbers across PC, next-gen and current gen and much more. From the interview: "The same thing goes for smaller things that we have. If theres a parked car, and you bump into it, the car alarm might go off. Or when theres a fire, the sprinklers in the roof might turn on, then theres water around you, and you get camera effects based on that. If you shoot a fire extinguisher, that creates a temporary smoke cloud. All of these small things allow you to use the environment to your advantage. So its a toolbox, and you can do what you want with them, but our goal is to get the feeling that its a more dynamic environment."

News::Randy Pitchford Defends Aliens: CM, Claims It Was Intent To Entertain And Not Exploitation

TPG - Theres no denying that Aliens: Colonial Marines was a hot mess of a flop. From setting high expectations with an E3 demo showing, to literally scrapping everything about that demo and replacing it with a substandard product, it truly was a big let down for a title that claimed it would improve the overall Aliens canon. Now we thought that eventually we would hear what really happened, but of course no apology or explanation was forthcoming from either SEGA or Gearbox.

News::Inclusive gaming: Awesome LGBTQ characters in games

"It always warms my heart to see some LGBTQ characters in my videogames. After all, I fell in love with games long before I fell in love with dudes. Though I wouldnt label myself as a gaymer, per se, Im all for equal representation in all aspects of life. So to mark the end of LGBTQ Pride Month as well as pride weekend in New York City and San Francisco Ive decided to put together a list of some of the best representations of gay men and women. This is obviously not a complete list. Sure, I could have put in FemShep from Mass Effect or The Grey Warden from Dragon Age: Origins, but the sexuality of those characters are up to the will of the player. Instead, the following guys and gals were made to stay true to themselves and they rock it. These, in my eyes, are some of the best gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer* videogame characters that Ive taken notice of over the years." - Maxwell Coviello

Even with the ability to redeem codes on Xbox.com using a keyboard, entering the damned things in is something of an annoyance when it doesn't need to be this way. We have the technology! Thankfully, Xbox One will make use of its included Kinect to scan redeemable codes.

For a publisher like EA, the value of running its own digital delivery service is clearit helps retain dollars from digital purchases that would otherwise go to another distributor. Gamers, though, are forced to fragment their gaming libraries across multiple services to keep up with hot exclusives. The value proposition on the customer side is a lot thinner.

News::Codemasters considering Cannon Fodder revival as part of move into mobile

Cannon Fodder is among several Codemasters IPs ripe for revival as it increasingly moves into mobile game development, the UK studio has told us.

Codemasters released Colin McRae Rally on iOS last week, the first of several mobile games currently in development. The studio has 60 developers working on mobile projects after it decided to move into the space a year ago, Codemasters VP of digital Gary Rowe told us.

“We’re very lucky to have some amazing IP to work with,” he said. “Hopefully fans will love the new Colin McRae game and if they do we can explore more classic racing games. I’d love to do World Touring Cars, it was the best of the TOCA Touring Car series in my opinion. Cannon Fodder is an IP we get a lot of fans asking for so we’ll look at that.”

“We are also working on games that extend our current portfolio of IPs, alongside some original themed titles, all in all I hope we’ll have a range that will please Codemasters fans both classic and current.”

Rowe also told us that the UK studio has classic and brand new driving games in development, plus “one or two real surprises.”

News::Neverwinter Review (Strategy Informer)

From Strategyinformer.com: "It takes a while to get into most MMOs - not many have quite grasped how to immediately engage the player while also patiently teaching them the nuances of their many systems - and Neverwinter is no exception. The first few hours are tedious, mashing together what feels like the worst aspects of both MMORPGs and ARPGs, giving you repetitive fetch and kill quests that you complete by using click-mashy combat. It's not a great first impression, but as you unlock more abilities and discover more about Neverwinter's world, it grows into something more accomplished".

News::Ukie argues for UK tax credits, citing “clear and evident market failure”

Ukie has responded to the EC’s investigation into proposed tax credits for UK game developers by arguing the case for games’ cultural influence, and outlined the “clear and evident market failure” of the current system.

The EC announced that it would be investigating the proposed tax credits in April, and while Ukie was ‘extremely disappointed,’ it remained confident the tax credits would be pushed through eventually. Today, it re-stated its case for the tax credits, intending to overturn the doubts the EC has expressed over the proposals.

Alongside arguing the case for games’ increasing cultural influence, it also suggested that European culture is not being represented fully by the videogames market, and that tax schemes in other territories represent “an existing and tangible market failure which has resulted in a lack of culturally European games being created.”

“Ukie is strongly of the view that the UK’s proposed tax credit is a targeted, proportionate solution which represents the minimum intervention necessary to address the relevant market failures,” it added.

Ukie CEO Dr Jo Twist said: “Fewer people are making games in the UK, which means that fewer games are being made which advocate our sense of humour, our creativity and our identity as European citizens. We need to have tax credits introduced as soon as possible”.

Hate them or hate them, Ewoks will forever remain part of the Star Wars mythology, in all parallel universes except for the Revenge of the Jedi one from BioShock Infinite. Probably. As part of update 2.3, the cuddly murderous rebels or one in particular are now being added to Star Wars: The Old Republic as the MMOs newest companion character.

News::Interview: Everything You Could Want to Know about Infinite Crisis

GodisaGeek: "Infinite Crisis is WB Games answer to the growing popularity of the MOBA. In a decidedly smart approach, theyve decided to use their licenses to the DC Universe to hopefully create a more engaging and dynamic game than weve ever seen before. Will it have what it takes? We sat down with the fine folks at Turbine, the development team behind the project, to see what we could discover. What we discovered is that the genre is something they know more than a thing or two about. Throughout the interview, we will be referring to the following map of Coast City."

News::A Mega Man Legends 3 8-bit fan game? Sure!

The campaign to resurrect Mega Man Legends 3 won't die, and I honestly hope it never does. The fans continue to surprise me with the myriad ways they demonstrate support, from producing a concept album to launching a replica of Roll and Tron's rescue rocket.

I guess the next logical step is to make a game.

At the Mega Rock Fan Fiesta, a Mega Man fan event held this past Saturday in Shibuya, Tokyo, the "Get Me Off the Moon" Facebook group announced an awesome new joint project with the group's Japanese equivalent, the Rockman DASH 3 Reboot Team. Since Capcom decided not to release the completed Mega Man Legends 3: Protoype Version on eShop, these two groups will simply remake it and release it online for free. Or rather I should say, they will demake it.

But this is not your typical fan production. They've actually got two former Capcom staffers to on board: Hideki Ishikawa and Makoto Tomozawa, character designer and composer for the Legends series, respectively. Ishikawa will create the game's box art, while Tomozawa will contribute a couple of songs to the soundtrack. That is... just... wow.
