News:: 'Super Mario Run' is just as much fun as we'd hoped

It's no stretch to say that Super Mario Run is one of the most notable mobile games in years. It's Nintendo's first real smartphone game and one of the only instances in which the company has developed a Mario game for non-Nintendo hardware. It's the first of several mobile titles planned and could mark the start of a major business shift for Nintendo. But let's put aside all these heady concerns about what Super Mario Run means for the company and answer the most important question: Is the game fun?

News:: Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime explains why it's time to go mobile

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has garnered a reputation for being a larger-than-life character, whether he's onstage presenting his company's latest or getting ready for a one-on-one interview. He's playing Super Mario Run on an iPad mini when our meeting begins, as if he just can't stop to focus on the more mundane task at hand. "I'm gonna put this down now," he says as we get started. "I had a great run going, too."

News:: Rumour: Dark Souls III may be heading to the Nintendo Switch

When it was first revealed that From Software would be working on producing titles for Nintendo's upcoming console -- the Nintendo Switch -- my mind raced. Immediately, I thought of the possibility of playing games like Dark Souls while on a long commute, as well as the prospect of looking like a madman as I tear my hair out in a fit of rage after dying one too many times to The Nameless King.

According to a report by Laura Kate Dale from Let’s Play Video Games, this may become an all-too-real situation, as From Software is supposedly working on producing a port of the third instalment in the Dark Souls trilogy for the Nintendo Switch. Laura Kate’s sources have stated that the game is running at a level of performance that the development team is happy with, although it is currently unconfirmed as to whether or not the company will go ahead and launch this as a full-fledged retail release. The reasoning behind this is that From Software is awaiting initial sales data before committing to releasing this port.

Supposedly, the company is also looking into the financial viability of releasing the first two games in the series on Nintendo’s upcoming handheld/home console hybrid.

If From Software does decide to release a Switch port of this title, it will likely launch alongside complete editions of Dark Souls III for PS4 and Xbox One, which will contain both the game and all of its DLC.

Now, I do have to warn you that this is still a rumour. LPVG's previous Nintendo Switch rumours -- which has included a crude mockup of the console's design in order to show off its split d-pad well before the manufacturer officially revealed it -- have been rather accurate, but this information is still unconfirmed at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if it does turn out to be true, but there are many ways in which this project could potentially fail. This is still a rumour, and it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Of course, I have no intention whatsoever to discredit the source of this information. All I’m saying is that caution should be exercised.

On a more personal note; I really hope this turns out to be true. I would gladly pay for a portable version of Dark Souls III, even though I know that it would more than likely lead to unpleasant situations for everyone around me whenever I play it in a public space.

News:: Just listening to this data-mined P.T. audio is unnerving

On the opposite end of the spectrum from that absurdly funny fan-made Metal Gear Solid V animation that swapped in Norman Reedus' character and Lisa from P.T., here we have another great find dug up by data miners: all the spooky scary voiced lines, some of which you've likely never heard.

This video by YouTube user AestheticGamer compiles all of the unsettling vocal audio from P.T. in one place, "not including all the baby sounds (as... Well, they're baby sounds) or the son speeches (since those are in video files apparently and not in-game audio), but everything else."

Yes, this is totally nerdy and scary, just the way I like it. P.T. will always live on in our hearts.

News:: Microsoft has big plans for VR and AR in 2017

Ever since Microsoft announced earlier this year that it would be opening up its Windows Holographic platform to other device makers, the company has been an intriguing presence in the world of virtual and augmented reality (or "mixed reality," as it's fond of saying). After all, Microsoft could offer some healthy competition to the likes of Oculus and HTC, which launched their own VR headsets and platforms this year. Today at the WinHEC conference in Shenzen, the company is finally giving us a clearer sense of how it plans to bring mixed reality to more consumers.

News:: Grasshopper Manufacture's The Silver Case is heading to PS4 in April

Back in October, Grasshopper Manufacturer's The Silver Case was rereleased for PC on Steam, GOG and The Humble Store. This also marked its debut in Western territories, as its original 1999 PlayStation release was only released in Japan. Not long after, NIS America announced that it was going to be releasing Suda51's adventure game on Sony's current-generation gaming console sometime during early 2017.

With 2017 being less than a month away, NIS America has confirmed a release date for the game. The Silver Case will be released for PS4 on April 18 in North America, with a European and Australian launch occurring three days later. Not only that, but The Silver Case will be released both as a digital download and in physical form. There's even a collector's edition of The Silver Case that's available on NIS America's European online store, which contains a manga, an OST CD, an art book and a copy of the game.

While this game was directed by Suda51, it's a little different to many of the titles that he's more renowned for. After all, Grasshopper Manufacture has reiterated that The Silver Case contains "no action, and no blood."

Considering that Suda51 has stated that he's down with producing more remasters of his older works, can we please get a Killer7 remake next? I know that a lot of people are after one, and I've never gotten a chance to try it for myself, despite my curiosity about it.

News:: NES Classic edition restocking soon

Nintendo's NES Classic Edition has been THE must-have toy for the holidays this year, and it's been sold out pretty much everywhere since it released on November 11. Much like the early days of the Wii, the consoles are going for up to five times their list price on eBay. It's pretty clear that Nintendo vastly underestimated the demand for this thing, so rumors of restocks have been met with eager anticipation.

According to Twitter, Best Buy stores will get at least one more shipment of the miniature consoles before Christmas. Oscar Muñoz received this image in his email, saying that the NES Classic Edition would be available in all Best Buy stores "tomorrow," but with a date of December 20. It appears as though the email was sent early in error.

Nintendo Everything reached out to Best Buy for a clarification, and were told that yes, the email was sent out too early. The clarification takes care to mention that the NES Classic consoles will only be available at their physical locations, each store will have limited quantities available, and that these will be distributed to customers on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you're on the hunt for a NES Classic for Christmas this year, this is probably one of the last chances you'll have to get one at a reasonable price. It might be worth checking out Best Buy stores tomorrow, just in case. And it couldn't hurt to check other retailers on December 20, either. Just be polite to the employees when you get there, please. It's not their fault Nintendo didn't make enough of these things.

News:: Star Wars Battlefront joins EA and Origin Access next week

Electronic Arts' subscription service EA Access, and its PC counterpart, Origin Access, are adding Star Wars Battlefront on Tuesday, December 13. If you're a member, you'll be able to play the full game at no extra cost, though you won't have access to the several post-release expansion packs.

Even if it is just the base game, this is a pretty good get, and not just for people who are curious to try Battlefront for the first time (or second time, if they got a glimpse of it in the widely-played beta). It's also good for folks on Xbox One and especially PC who have stuck with the multiplayer despite the relatively low player counts on these platforms making that a struggle at times.

It's too bad Sony and EA couldn't work it out and bring EA Access to PS4, because then subscribers could, in theory, have gotten to play the just-released Battlefront VR Mission at no extra cost.

News:: Xbox head says Scorpio will be at a 'console price-point'

Microsoft unveiled Project Scorpio at this year's E3 as what it calls "the most powerful game console ever." Seeing as Scorpio is set for a launch late next year, we don't yet know all the specifics about it. (Side note: I'm attached to the Scorpio code name and will almost certainly prefer it over the actual name, just like with Project Natal and Kinect.) However, a side by side comparison of Scorpio and PS4 Pro indicates that, yes, it probably will hold up to that claim.

Even though Scorpio should be the most capable console on the market, Microsoft seems determined to still price it like a console. In a recent interview with AusGamers, Xbox head Phil Spencer said "I want Scorpio to be at a console price-point, I’m not trying to go and compete with a high-end [PC] rig."

Spencer also shared some thoughts on Scorpio's components and the relationship they share with one another. "Really, what it is, is you want a platform that is balanced between memory bandwidth, GPU power, you know, your ability to move memory and [an] amount of memory around in many ways is more inhibiting to the performance of your game than absolute teraflops on any one of the individual pieces, and when we designed Scorpio we really thought about this balanced rig that could come together at a price point," he commented.

Microsoft is likely months away from telling us what that price point is, but recent history can give us a ballpark. The PS4 Pro is $400, but that price might be too cheap to be feasible for Scorpio. The 60GB model of the PlayStation 3 launched at $600, so that isn't unprecedented. However, the market mostly balked at the idea of a $500 machine when Xbox One originally launched, but maybe that's because it was under-powered and more expensive than the PS4. Wherever Microsoft lands, it'll have to do so carefully; consumers have proven they'll ignore something if the public perception is that it's too expensive.

News:: PlayStation Network's holiday sale is up

Are you deal'd out yet? I'm fast approaching that point (or so I'd like to think), and it's with that state of mind that I anxiously tiptoe into this first of four weeks of PlayStation Network sales in the US.

I do not need any more games before the new year, and thankfully, nothing in this first batch is irresistibly calling my name. If you missed Dragon Quest Heroes, I'd suggest taking a chance on that at $26.79. It won me over, even as someone who isn't super into Warriors / Musou or the main-series Dragon Quest titles. At $18, Earth Defense Force 4.1 is another easy recommendation for me to make assuming you know what you're getting into and are cool with that. EDF EDF EDF and all that jazz.

News:: Ubisoft has plans for a theme park in the UAE

Many people may have forgotten, but Ubisoft announced last year that it was looking to expand into the theme park game. Its plans included a "next-gen" theme park in Malaysia with a tentative opening of 2020. It looks like Ubisoft isn't done staking a claim in Asia, as its next venture involves a partnership with Dubai's IMG World Indoor Theme Park.

Ubisoft has explained that the reasoning for these theme parks is that it is looking to expand its catalog of franchises beyond gaming. I don't know how a French company in love with America is going to gain any traction bringing its Westernized franchises to Asia, but I'm not its creative planner. Maybe there is something I'm just not seeing.

Much like the park in Malaysia, this new park will include characters from the Assassin's Creed, Just Dance, and Rabbids franchises. It won't be a separate park, but rather incorporated into IMG's World of Legends park. There is going to be a total of nine zones, with the three aforementioned franchises making up different areas.

Along with the French company, it looks like IMG is also teaming up with Mattel and Viacom, so there will be areas based on SpongeBob SquarePants, Power Rangers, and Dragon Ball Z, to name a few. This sounds like a pop-culture tribute more than anything, but I guess it should be a blast. If there is a rideable Megazord, I'll be there.

News:: Bloggers wanted: Special little places

The holidays are a special time for friends and family to gather together and share in things like togetherness and holiday cheer. It's also a time when game releases are jammed together because the holiday shopping season is prime time to make some serious bank.

A lot of gamers are hopefully also familiar with the free time the holiday affords us to catch up on some of our favorites, whether they're the newest releases or just a few titles from our backlogs. From the precocious student to the white-collar nine-to-fiver, many places and cultures recognize that December is worthy of a few days of universal rest.

News:: Some maniac walked all the way across Steep's map

Those who wish to explore Steep's vast open world will find themselves traveling in one general direction: down. That's the general goal when it comes to winter mountain sports. Just get to the bottom and make it look cool while you do it.

One Steep player took a decidedly more arduous approach to traversing the in-game Alps. They walked across the entire goddamn mountain range. User VanessaMagick walked, ran, climbed, and slid from corner to corner of Steep's map like an absolute lunatic.

As you can see in the above-embedded video, it took four and a half hours. The video's there the same way auto shop waiting room coffee is there -- as a courtesy that you're not expected to actually use. A much more digestible six-minute time lapse is down below.

If you make an open world, players will walk across it. They've proven it time and time again. Bless these spiritual Lewis and Clarks for doing the hard work (like the guy who spent 12 hours walking across half of one of No Man's Sky's planets). It leaves the rest of us to haphazardly click through their videos, resting easy by knowing that someone out there has the determination and time to do what we won't.

News:: Newest South Park: The Fractured but Whole trailer has a bit more story and fart jokes

South Park: The Stick of Truth was a fabulous experience. It felt like a long, interactive episode of the series that encompassed a lot of the show's recent seasons into a unique story. Good thing every bit of footage we've seen of the sequel, The Fractured but Whole, seems to keep that awesome train rolling.

According to this trailer, the spark that sets off the story is a missing cat, and now the main character has time farts? It still wows me that these games can capture the show so well, and we can rest knowing the sequel won't skimp out on the crude humor or Butters' shenanigans.

News:: Get a last-minute $250 PS4 bundled with Uncharted 4

Sony has put out a new PS4 bundle for last-minute holiday shoppers. It takes a 500GB PS4 -- the newer, slimmer one (normally $300), but not the "Pro" -- and adds in a copy of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.

All this, for $250. The deal will be available December 11 through December 24.

Not as good as this Black Friday PS4 deal, but not bad. Plus, you've already missed that one. I'm just letting you know what you missed, you know? Sorry.

News:: Destiny's two new racing maps are more enjoyable than I expected

I'm not the Destiny dude around here. That'd be Chris or Darren. But I was the one at PSX over the weekend, so I am control of the #content around here and decided I was gonna try Destiny's two new Sparrow Racing League maps. Did I overcome my lack of Destiny knowledge and destroy all the people I was playing against, including Modern Family's Luke, weirdly enough? Fuck naw!

I slooooowly made my way through the two new levels, Haakon Precipice and Shining Sands. Haakon is a snowy mountain peak with sharp turns and enemies feebly blasting at you as you glide by. The Shining Sands map is fraught with obstacles, like spinning tunnels with outcroppings that can make you go boom and huge jumps that launch you over caverns. Again, I'm not a Destiny boy, so I didn't know what to expect from this racing mode, but found it surprisingly fun.

News:: Sony revives its $50 PS4 price drop for two weeks

Disheartened that you missed out on a price-cut PlayStation 4 around Black Friday? You're about to get a second chance. In a near-repeat of what happened last year, Sony is resurrecting its $50 discount on the Uncharted 4 slim PS4 bundle between December 11th and December 24th. Yes, you'll still get the console for $250 in the US if you're a last-minute shopper. And Canadians get an extra break -- while the PS4 costs $330 in local currency, they have until December 29th to go shopping. News:: Review: Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization

Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization might be the best Sword Art Online game yet.

Then again, we might not be talking about all that much. This is, after all, just the third major Sword Art Online game (fifth, counting revamped re-releases), situated along a quality range firmly within the "inoffensive" spectrum.

That said, Hollow Realization would be easy to recommend, and in fits of inspired design, comes the closest yet to really capturing what it might feel like to actually play the online RPGs Sword Art Online's cast are constantly engaged with. In short, it's a game that almost warrants an an unqualified thumbs-up.

News:: Today's Doom update adds bots to multiplayer

The fifth free update for Doom rolls out today, and with it comes a new grab-the-ball-and-score multiplayer mode, Infernal Run, as well as a higher level cap, bots (!!!), and a better SnapMap.

As much as I don't have any interest in returning to this multiplayer component, I have to commend id Software for bringing out the bots ("on original multiplayer maps in Team Deathmatch and Deathmatch game modes"). It feels like so few games have the feature anymore, and as an eternal TimeSplitters player, I always love a good bot battle in my shooters. Maybe, just maybe, I'll check in on that.

As for the SnapMap upgrades, I'm not informed enough to speak about what specifically they'll mean for user-made levels, but bullet points like "Improved Object Limits" and "Persistent Integer variables that can be passed between missions within a campaign" have got to be encouraging for map makers.

News:: What Remains of Edith Finch continues to be horrifying, dreamy, and intriguing

Few games stick with me after conventions as much as What Remains of Edith Finch has for the past two PlayStation Experiences. Last year, a shorter-haired, thinner me was on PlayStation's livecast to talk about why it intrigues me so (look at him, so full of life and vigor). This year, I was treated to a new demo that was probably about ten minutes long but will stay with me for much, much longer.

Before we get there, let's talk about the setup of Edith Finch. The titular character has found that she's the last one left alive in her family. She's exploring her home, which is filled with secret puzzles, levers, and diaries, each detailing the lives of one of her relatives. Said family had a bizarre mourning habit: instead of burying their dead and getting rid of their earthly possessions, the deceased's rooms are boarded up, preserving their lives exactly as they were.

In this demo, Edith is in the room of what was once a pair of twins. When one twin died, instead of boarding up the room entirely, one half was roped off, left in stagnation. As Edith, I went up into a bunk bed (or some kind of playhouse, I'm having trouble remembering exactly because PSX was busy enough to kill me) and found a short story, leading me into a flashback to one of her relatives.

As rumored, Niantic is bringing brand partnerships to its hit augmented reality game, Pokémon Go. News:: Final Fantasy XV tops Japanese sales charts in first week

Square Enix shipped five million copies of Final Fantasy XV on it's first day worldwide, but unsurprisingly the vast majority of those must have come outside of Japan. The long-awaited title with a really bad movie I'm currently relieving myself of was the top-selling video game in Japan from 11/28-12/04, 2016. It's 690,471 first week copies is less than half of what Pokémon Sun and Moon sold in it's first week (1,590,629).

That's also less than half of Final Fantasy XIII's first week sales (1,501,964), but it did outperform FFXIII-2 (524,217) and FFXIII Lightning Returns (277,082) in their respective first weeks. Interesting to note is that of the 694,262 copies of FFXV sold thus far in Japan, only 3,791 of those were on Xbox One (0.5% of all FFXV sales in Japan).

Speaking of Pokémon, Sun and Moon are still going strong selling over 223,000 copies in its third week, taking the second spot on the list. The top five is rounded out by newly released Super Mario Maker for 3DS (162,180), Watch Dogs 2 (39,965), and All Kamen Rider: Ride Revolution (23,308).

On the hardware side, the release of Final Fantasy XV has caused PS4 sales to soar from around 33,000 last week to over 110,000 units sold this week.  FFXV's release likely caused a similar increase in PS4 sales worldwide, pushing its total number of sales to over 50 million. PS4 Pro sales dropped by over 200 sales from last week however.
