News:: Try not to puke while playing 'Wipeout' in VR next year

Wipeout might be one of the most ill-suited games for virtual reality, featuring high-speed races with brilliant flashing lights and neon streaks -- but it's coming to PlayStation VR anyway. Wipeout Omega Collection will get a free VR mode in early 2018, Sony announced during tonight's PlayStation Experience pre-show. The VR update includes all modes and tracks in the base game, 3D audio support, plus exclusive ships and interiors. Puke bags are not included.

News:: The Evil Within 2 now has a demo on PC, PS4, and Xbox One

Bethesda made a strong single-player push this year with games like Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, Prey, and The Evil Within 2. The former recently got a trial, and now the latter has followed suit.

"In these first chapters you'll have the opportunity to explore some of the game's tight, nightmare-riddled, linear experiences, as well as the more open streets of Union," reads Bethesda's description.

You can nab the demo on Steam, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. It's in the 30GB range.

Also pertinent to mention: The Evil Within 2 is half price ($30) currently on PC and consoles, so if you're on the fence and think the demo might be enough to sway you, you'll want to act sooner than later.

News:: Bungie feeds ‘Destiny 2’ trolls a ridiculously overpowered gun

Bungie responded to Destiny 2 player's complaints by cancelling a planned "Curse of Osiris" DLC livestream to detail new changes. The developers added more endgame rewards, a new weapon class and an improved economy to address those concerns.

Recently, a massively overpowered, game breaking laser gun called the Prometheus Lens was available to high-level players as a random drop, making it too easy for those who found it to dominate the PVP maps. Bungie had plans to fix the issue, but maybe it's grown tired of all the whining, since Destiny 2's exotic weapons sales-alien, Xur, has the gun on sale for anyone who wants it.

News:: See the Battle Angel Alita trailer with your own normal-sized eyes

Battle Angel Alita, originally titled "Gunnm" in Japan, is a manga that started way back in 1990 about Alita, an amnesiac robot who is rebuilt after being found in a junkyard and discovers that there is something special about her. The manga caught the eye of filmmaker James Cameron in the '90s and he's been saying that he has wanted to make an adaptation since after his monster hit Titanic. Much like Cameron's other box office CG success Avatar, he waited until the technology was good enough before attempting to adapt Battle Angel Alita and here we are now.

Boy, the technology sure is here now. The trailer above sure looks okay with the cool-looking robot parts and with what little they show of the Alita's world. However, I know I am not alone when I say those slightly-larger-than-human eyes sure are distracting, even though we fully know she isn't human as it is said in the trailer. After a few viewings of the trailer, I might be warming up to her eyes a bit but trying to get over the "uncanny valley"-ness of her look is not an easy task.

Quick! Before I forget again! Pre-loading has begun for the PlayStation Plus-exclusive Monster Hunter: World beta. You can nab that right here (it's 5.47GB) and tell your pals to do the same.

Here's the gist:

The beta features three quests set across two different maps: the dense, verdant foliage of the Ancient Forest and the arid sands of the Wildspire Waste. Track your prey across each of these unique landscapes, using the very environment itself to your advantage.

Each quest features a different monster for you to try your hand at hunting, but you don't have to go it alone: up to four players can team up online in co-operative multiplayer.

Beginners: Hunt the Great Jagras in the Ancient Forest
Intermediate: Hunt the Barroth in the Wildspire Waste
Experts: Hunt the Anjanath in the Ancient Forest

The beta will be playable from December 9 at 9:00am Pacific to December 12 at 8:59am Pacific.

News:: Discord once again offers to assist with Nintendo's Switch chat feature

The Switch likely has the worst base chat feature on any console out right now, but that won't stop Nintendo from requiring an app and elaborate configurations just to run it. The chat program behemoth Discord has offered to help Nintendo out int he past, and as of recently, they're extending their services once again. According to Glixel, CEO Jason Citron is all ears.

Commenting on Switch chat, Citron stated: "I have thought about the Switch. I have spent many hundreds of hours of my life in that little screen. If Nintendo wants us to power their voice chat, we’d be happy to talk.

I really hope at some point Nintendo takes someone up on their offer to improve their Switch infrastructure. Right now the system is selling like hotcakes and there are plenty of games for it, but if they want to grow even further into the demographics that want bells and whistles, they need to keep innovating.

News:: Nintendo Switch features and pricing detailed for Bayonetta 1 and 2

A bunch of you who missed Bayonetta 2 on Wii U will have the opportunity to experience it on Nintendo Switch in February and that makes me so very happy. To my mind, it's one of the best action games ever made, and I say that as someone who skipped the original Bayonetta the first time around.

Expanding on what we saw last night at The Game Awards, Bayonetta 1 and 2 will be priced as follows:

  • The two-game physical edition will be $60 and include a download code for Bayonetta.
  • Bayonetta 2 will cost $50 on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Once you buy the sequel, you'll then be able to get Bayonetta for $10.
  • If you purchase Bayonetta on the Switch eShop first, it'll cost $30, but you'll then be able to nab Bayonetta 2 for $30.

In short, just get both of 'em on February 16. They're fantastic.

Platinum also announced a few extra features for Bayonetta 2 in a now-removed blog post. This new port will have online and local support for Tag Climax co-op, amiibo functionality of some sort (more costumes?), and up-to-30-second video recordings through the Switch's capture feature.

News:: This special Sea of Thieves Xbox controller is the best loot

Controllers: Sometimes they're ugly. But, sometimes they're the opposite of ugly. Sometimes they're spectacular nods to video games, with such brilliant designs that they end up as a special and impressive piece of memorabilia.

In case you couldn't tell, we're quite enamored with this Sea of Thieves special edition Xbox One controller. The effervescent green against the twilight purple is a handsome contrast. The one gold trigger calls attention to itself the same way a pirate might with a grin that flashes his gold tooth. Top notch stuff here.

The controller comes at a bit of a premium though. It will retail for $75 and releases on February 6 -- a month and a half before Sea of Thieves launches. It comes with an exclusive in-game Ferryman clothing set, and 14-day trials for both Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass. This is the part where I tell you that even though it's kind of expensive, you shouldn't steal it even if that's what a real pirate would do.

News:: Soulcalibur VI will cover the events of the original

Bandai Namco lifted the lid on Soulcalibur VI last night during The Game Awards. In the time since, more details have surfaced along with screenshots and character artwork, viewable in the gallery below.

Those of you with an eye for detail had compelling guesses about when this game takes place. According to Bandai Namco, it will "revisit the events of the original Soulcalibur to uncover hidden truths with a diverse lineup of new and returning characters." As a lapsed fan, I like what I'm hearing.

"Soulcalibur VI retains the series' signature 8-Way Run movement system, providing super smooth 3D movement, while integrating new gameplay systems such as the exciting Reversal Edge," which "enables characters to clash against each other and follow-up with powerful counterattacks based on their opponent's actions." As for the cast, it's still only Mitsurugi and Sophitia for now.

Namco lists Soulcalibur VI for a 2018 release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

News:: Destiny 2's first 'raid lair' is out, and it's the only bright spot of the DLC

Destiny 2 just hosted its first expansion this week, The Curse of Osiris. It was disappointing to say the least, littered with core issues that plagued the game since the start, and a relatively light amount of content. To make matters worse, there isn't much incentive to play any of it because of how janky the endgame is.

The first "raid lair" (read: a miniature raid), Eater of Worlds, is out now though post-launch. It kicks up the expansion a tiny bit. And I mean a really tiny bit.

The updated edition of the SNES classic is coming to PS4, PS Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. This release is a port of the iOS and Android version which launched back in Summer 2016, though the visuals have been optimised for the new formats.

News:: Review: Slain: Back From Hell (Switch)

Upon its original release last year, Slain! was met with all the enthusiasm of a wet fart. The game’s Kickstarter campaign showed a lot of promise and the aesthetics behind the game got a bunch of people amped up. This game looked to be a heavy metal album cover brought to life, so what could possibly go wrong?

Turns out a lot; there were various problems with hit detection, sluggish controls, and generally just a lackluster experience. Developer Wolf Brew Games took an extensive look at complaints and issued an update titled Slain: Back From Hell within a few months. The game then came much closer to the original vision outlined by that crowdfunding campaign and people were seemingly happy with the result.

So if everything was hunky dory and people dig the game, why the hell is the Switch version so bad?

News:: Stardew Valley is coming to PlayStation Vita next year

Stardew Valley isn't done making the rounds. As confirmed today by Chucklefish, the farming life sim is headed to PlayStation Vita next year, and if you own it on PS4, you won't have to pay again.

This is a pleasant surprise. While the team had said it was "investigating the possibility of a PS Vita port," that's a commonly-used line. It doesn't always turn out with us getting a new handheld version.

A few other details have come out, too. Multiplayer is still in the works (although it won't be supported in the eventual PS Vita version), and the developers are aiming for a Q1 2018 multiplayer beta. That time frame is a little later than previously expected "in order to make room for polish and QA."

Stardew Valley creator Eric Barone is working on new game content, as previously discussed, and today we got another peek at whatever that might be (pictured above). If it's an aquarium, I'll be ecstatic.

Next year will also bring language support for French, Italian, Korean, and Turkish.

News:: The next US Splatfest tackles awful holiday gifts

The final Splatoon 2 Splatfest of 2017 is nearly upon us and the topic up for debate is which bad holiday gift you'd rather receive. I don't believe I've ever received either, but opening a sweater or a pair of socks is kind of like the same thing. Getting any kind of clothing from relatives is typically a crap shoot due to no one really understanding your specific style. I've definitely thrown many gifted coats into the closet to never be seen again.

The Splatfest will be held next week on December 15 at 9 pm PST. You can login to Splatoon 2 today and pick your side to get ready for the action.

News:: SNK's Neo Geo adventure Top Hunter Roddy & Cathy hits console

Another SNK classic joins the ACA range this week, as Top Hunter Roddy & Cathy sees re-release on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

The side-scrolling action adventure, originally released for the Neo Geo back in 1994, stars two intergalactic bounty hunters as they fight their way through a series of themed-planets. The game had several intriguing gimmicks, such as the options to leap between planes ala Fatal Fury, and special attacks that could be unleashed via joystick combinations, ala... erm... Fatal Fury.

Top Hunter is a great looking game, featuring huge, colourful sprites and exciting boss battles. It was notorious for its piss-easy difficulty though, that saw many players breeze through it in an afternoon, before sitting back and letting the buyer's remorse of a $100 cartridge sink in.

Fortunately in 2017 the game only costs $8, and is available to download right now on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

News:: Path of Exile is hosting another free expansion right after a gigantic one

I recently got into Path of Exile in earnest thanks to a community member, and it was a blast. The new expansion that basically doubled the campaign helped, as will this new update, War for the Atlas.

It'll drop later today, and will focus mostly on endgame, providing 32 new randomized maps and a storyline involving the Shaper and the Elder. It also introduces more bosses, items, necromancy skill gems (my favorite build), and the Abyss League.

As always, these expansions are free and included in the Path of Exile actually free-to-play base game. PoE has been wholly supported by cosmetic add-ons (outside of stash stabs which I'd argue are a little gameplay related -- something I can easily deal with) for the past four years. It also just recently launched on Xbox One.

News:: N-Zap 89 pulls its clunky trigger in Splatoon 2 tonight

Something a little different arrives in Nintendo's arena-shooter Splatoon 2 today, as this weekly weapon joining the game's arsenal is the nostalgic N-Zap89.

The gun is obviously based on duck-killing weaponry of yore, but has a slightly more reliable rate-of-fire and makes less parent-waking noise than its real-life counterpart. The all-grey Zapper has previously appeared in the Splatoon series, but this variant features the light grey-and-orange design.

The N-Zap 89 comes equipped with an Autobomb sub and Tenta Missile special. As always it will go live in North America later this evening, with Europe and Japan to follow tomorrow. Remember: Do Not Point at People or Animals.

News:: Plants vs. Zombies creator's next project, Octogeddon, is finally on the way

Over eight years ago, George Fan had a dream that one day he'd create a "sickeningly cute" game. That project would eventually become Plants vs. Zombies and take the world by storm, prompting a turn of events that would see EA purchase the company Fan worked for two years later in 2011, and eventually, would lead to him being laid off in 2012.

He's had a pretty wild ride, but now he's almost ready to unleash his newest project onto the world -- Octogeddon.

The game will once again partner Rich Werner, who did the artwork for PvZ, with Fan, and will launch as a "premium game with no monetization (even when more content is added)" on February 8, 2018. No pricepoint has been announced, but you can watch the teaser for now. A "Closed B8ta" will run soon with 64 participants, which can be earned by allegedly "pestering George on Twitter."

Given the folks involved I'm definitely keeping this one on my radar.
