The Ys franchise is one that I’ve been meaning to really dive into ever since I played Memories of Celceta for the PlayStation Vita. Its fast-paced and action-oriented gameplay, as well as its kick-ass soundtrack, had me unable to put my Vita down until I'd downed its final boss.
Despite my adoration for Memories of Celceta, I've unfortunately not gotten around to playing some of the other instalments in Nihon Falcom's long-running JRPG franchise for one reason or another.
It looks like I'll soon have a good excuse to jump back into the series, as DotEmu has announced that it will be releasing Ys Origin for the PlayStation 4 and Vita on February 21 next year. Ys Origin -- which is meant to be a prequel to the rest of the series, taking place 700 years prior to Ys 1: Ancient Ys Vanished -- first launched in Japan back in 2006, although it took another six years to make it to the West via a PC release on Steam and GOG.
DotEmu has also advertised that the PS4 and Vita version of Ys Origin will contain various additional features. Save for a handful of new language options (French, Italian, German and Spanish) to go alongside the English and Japanese translations, the publisher hasn’t specified what exactly this entails, however.
There’s also no word on the pricing of this release. Hopefully it isn’t too expensive, as it only costed $20 when the PC version was released back in 2012.
