A quick impressions article via EGMR for Assassin's Creed: Rogue after the author played it at rAge 2014 in South Africa. Quote: "The new character and partial setting at least for the gameplay demonstration are also the first really intriguing aspect for quite some time in the series; what would happen if an assassin went rogue? Thats what the game is trying its best to portray for us, and while we cant speak on story we can at least speak on the location of the demo being the Arctic tundra which displayed the Northern Lights in their full glory. It was beautiful and captivating and while the final product is probably going to be more of the same, meaning tail missions for everyone (!), we cant help but adore it for specifically that reason. News::Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Review - GamesReviews

From GamesReviews: "Let's state the obvious: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is a LOT like Borderlands 2 - being built on the same engine as its predecessor, it really should be no surprise to anyone going in. The real challenge for developers 2K Australia was to somehow make the same feel different in Pre-Sequel: the foundation for kick-ass co-operative shooting and looting was already there, they only needed to find enough ways to make people (like myself) who put hundreds of hours into Borderlands 2 want to return, without destroying the game's successful RPG-meets-FPS formula in the process. And they certainly didn't mess with it: despite a few tweaks here and there, The Pre-Sequel largely feels like a space-themed expansion to Borderlands 2: unfortunately, an expansion that doesn't bring much of the series' personality along for the ride. "

News::Friday Night Fights: That new PC smell

Happy Friday!

I recently (read: last month) built a new PC to play games on. My old PC was just shy of eight years old and hadn't had a decent upgrade in roughly four years. Needless to say, most of the games I have been wanting to play lately simply wouldn't run on my old rig.

Thanks to the always awesome Max Roahrig, I finally have something that will actually play more than just RollerCoaster Tycoon and SimCity 2000. It's been awesome lately, playing games on my PC that once made my old computer shiver with fear. It's nice knowing that I can simply download a game and not worry about whether or not I can run it.

The one thing that hasn't been awesome however, is how much money I've spent on games since my new PC was up and running. I did a tally last night, just to kinda see where the total was and, well, it's over half of what I paid to build this damn PC.

News::Review: The Art of Alien: Isolation

Alien: Isolation has received a lot of praise over its faithful recreation of the original film's lo-fi take on science fiction. "Truckers in space" was the aesthetic director Ridley Scott set out to capture and the decks and corridors of the shipping vessel Nostromo defined a sci-fi art style for 35 years.

Titan has a new book out showcasing the concept art and illustrations that inspired Isolation but they could have just as easily come from a book showing the ideas behind the original movie.

News::Agarest: Generations of War Zero (PC) Review - cubed3

"Cubed3 recently reviewed the predecessor to this game, Agarest: Generations of War, and for better or worse, most of that review could be copied, pasted, had a few names changed, and still be one hundred percent accurate. Detailing events prior to the original game, Agarest: Generations of War Zero is a JRPG developed by Idea Factory, which has made the move over to PC through the team at Laughing Jackal. Again like the first title, expect throwbacks to older JRPGs, sprite-based graphics, pre-rendered character designs, and a game that is unlikely to ring in others outside of its established audience."

Fast forward to 2014 and the "20th Anniversary Edition" promises a remastered, rerelease that includes updated HD graphics, new puzzles to test the grey matter, additional scenes for the story, and a soundtrack that has been revisited and updated by the original composer Robert Holmes. News::Xenonauts (PC) Review - cubed3

"Xenonauts is the latest major release of an XCOM clone, notable for being much more 'fan created' than Firaxis' XCOM Enemy Unknown, which was launched to much greater fanfare. Having nearly every major aspect copied directly from the old XCOM games, Xenonauts looks to be a solid offering in strategy and tactical alien hunting. However, though it contains the recipe of a great game, misses or changes in a few aspects, mostly for the negative, makes this hard to recommend to fans of the genre."

Eurogamer: "The Evil Within is a good game, possibly even a great one, but what's clear after a few days' testing is that it suffers from technical issues which prevent it reaching its full potential. News::I picked up the Excalibastard in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

There has been a bit of talk about an interesting legendary weapon in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel that is in plain sight, but unavailable at first. Excalibastard is stuck in a stone in the area Stanton's Liver, and only those badass enough can pull it out. At first, there was only speculation, but the community went in and tinkered with the code to find out that it requires at least 2500 badass points to pull, which is somewhere between one and two times through the campaign, depending on how much variety a player employs.

I played around with it for a few minutes to get a feel for it, and it is one of the "railgun-like" laser weapons that feels more like a sniper rifle. Naturally, being named after a mythical sword, it comes with a pretty long blade. It is 100% accurate, and has the cryo element. The Borderlands wiki reports enemies killed with it also explode with a cryo nova, though I did not experience that with my limited time using it.

Check out my screenshots to see it in action.

News::I am Bread is just delightful

How did that bread get up on the ceiling fan? Very carefully, I'd imagine.

Bossa Studios' I am Bread is a game in which you literally play as a sentient slice of bread. And, get this, it looks fun! Challenging, too. The controls appear reminiscent of something like QWOP where it's often a humorous struggle to get anywhere, even a few inches ahead.

It reminds me of the PlayStation glory days when developers were both willing and able to create experimental or otherwise bizarre 3D games. Incredible Crisis comes to mind. Or Mister Mosquito, if you're jumping ahead to PS2. Exactly the stuff I wish we'd see more of in the indie scene.
