News:: The End is Nigh hits Nintendo Switch on December 12 with a physical edition

Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel's platforming adventure The End is Nigh is one of those games I'm willing to wait to play until I can do so on Nintendo Switch, right alongside Hollow Knight.

The Switch version launches December 12 and that includes a $30 physical edition with goodies; if you score a first-run copy from Nicalis, you'll also get a 24-page manual and a silicone Ash toy.

Nic reviewed the PC version and had mostly good things to report, citing The End is Nigh's "phenomenal design, flawless controls, and kickass soundtrack you have come to expect from a McMillen game."

The takeaway? "If you couldn't get enough of Super Meat Boy and have spent the past seven years fiending for more punishing platformers, than The End of Nigh is something you should immediately inject into your veins." I think by the time this drops, I'll be ready for a new platformer.

News:: There's a Hitman TV series in the works from John Wick series creator

Hitman's recent resurgence must've gained some notoriety, and I suppose its time as a film series is done, so now it's getting adapted into a Hulu exclusive TV series. According to Deadline, FOX and Hulu have tapped the John Wick series creator and writer Derek Kolstad to write the pilot episode with the hopes it'll become a major series for the subscription service.

I'm a little disappointed there won't be a proper follow up to Hitman: Agent 47, but seeing as how I'm one of the few who enjoyed it steering into complete video game nonsense, I totally understand. John Wick is a great framework to pull a series like this from, but without Chad Stahelski at the helm I'm cautiously optimistic as to what the end result will be.

Of course, gamers can also opt for a remastered version of L.A. Noire or The Sims 4 on consoles, while Atomic Blonde arrives on 4K Blu-ray. The Mindy Project reaches the end of its run on Hulu, and we'll check out the season finale of You're the Worst. News:: EA makes ‘Star Wars: Battlefront II’ heroes easier to earn amid backlash

Video game studios sometimes tinker with their games until release day, but Electronic Arts is making another last-minute change to soothe legions of irate fans. After the high price to unlock heroes in the upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront II caused fans to revolt, EA relented. The publisher told fans in a blog post that, effective immediately, a handful of iconic characters including Luke and Darth Vader would be far easier to earn.

News:: Europe gets a free PS Plus weekend ahead of Battlefront II launch

If you're a PS4 owner without Plus and live in Europe, you'll soon get a chance to check out some multiplayer action! Sony has announced on the official EU PlayStation blog that multiplayer services will be free from November 15 till November 20. Whether or not this was to coincide with the launch of Battlefront II on Friday is anyone's guess, but I'm sure that helped the decision along.

You won't be granted access to the free game selection, but getting the opportunity to check out multiplayer could be enough to sway you into signing up for the service. Honestly, I stay subbed mostly for the free games as I tend to not care about online connectivity anymore. Even with some dour months, getting a varied selection of games I may not otherwise have tried is worth it, for me.

News:: Dead Cells' Brutal Update adds tons of new content

Dead Cells took me by surprise. The self-proclaimed 'RogueVania' takes inspiration from a handful of other games and mixes them into a challenging, rewarding mix. Though it's still in Early Access, Motion Twin's procedural platformer is a polished, punishing game that's hard to put down.

Tomorrow, Dead Cells will get a major update. The 'Brutal Update' doubles down on the game's character progression system, overhauling stats and skills in addition to adding new environments and encounters.

News:: Call of Duty: WWII players have mistakenly been earning double XP since launch

If you've been playing Call of Duty: WWII since it launched you may have noticed a sudden drop off in the amount of experience you've been earning. You aren't going crazy, Sledgehammer Games mistakenly launched the game with double XP bonuses turned on. They've since rectified the mistake.

The past few days played host to the game's first official double XP weekend, which is when players noticed something was off. Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey took to Twitter and Reddit to explain the situation.

News:: Warface is jumping on the battle royale craze

Remember Warface? When Crytek launched the game a few years ago in the Russian market, I remember the company saying they were done with triple-A development and that free-to-play was the future. I'm not sure if that still rings true for them, but Warface has managed to stick around in spite of its free-to-play trappings. With this next upcoming patch, the game might finally be able to draw attention.

Jumping on the craze started by H1Z1 and PUBG, Warface is going to be adding a "battle royale" mode. This will feature all the sub-genre tropes like a progressively closing circle, last man standing action and 100 player battles. The most notable difference would be that Warface is entirely first-person, though PUBG does feature that as a mode. Know that the mode isn't going to be permanent, at least not for now. All feedback taken from this beta period will be used to fine tweak the mode for its eventual return.

Seeing as how I dig the battle royale game mode that PUBG popularized, I might actually be down to check this out. I don't know that I particularly care for Crytek's style of shooters (I've never been a fan of Crysis), but that massive scale last man standing mode allows for such emergent gameplay that it constantly surprises and delights. Competition in the genre will also push everyone to get better, so this can only mean good things for the future.

News:: EA backpedals on Star Wars Battlefront II hero costs, and it's still not enough

When Star Wars Battlefront II launches later this week, most people won't be playing as the iconic figures from the films. Despite being the main draw to a Star Wars game, EA has opted to lock these characters behind walls -- either of progression or pay. Statistics came out of the 10-hour EA Access trial that estimated it'd take approximately 40 hours of playing to unlock a single hero character.

EA came under intense and immediate fire for this. It was enough that the publisher has just altered its approach to heroes. In an update on the game's site, EA states that it has dropped the in-game cost of some of these characters by 75 percent. Now, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader will cost 15,000 credits; Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa will run 10,000 credits; and Iden will be 5,000 credits. Of course, players can just buy crystals with real money to unlock these characters immediately.

It isn't as blatant but it's almost equally egregious. Asking players to grind for 10 hours to unlock their favorite characters is in the exact same spirit as asking them to grind for 40 hours. It creates a user base of haves and have-nots, and the haves are unquestionably cooler.

Without wishing to sound hyperbolic, this is one of the most deplorable cash grabs the industry has seen in recent history. EA is selling a Star Wars game where the most identifiable Star Wars features have to be eventually unlocked. EA says that's because it wants these characters to feel like "achievements." But, simply paying to unlock Darth Vader doesn't feel like much of an achievement at all.

News:: Deadpool is about to get pulled from the Steam store

It seems like the merc with a mouth just can't sit still for too long. High Moon Studio's Deadpool has come and gone from Steam so many times that hearing about another delisting is hardly surprising. Licenses expire and Activision has never really pushed Deadpool all that much. With that being said, this may be the final chance you'll have to grab the kooky action romp on Valve's digital platform.

The game will be leaving Steam's digital storefront on November 16. If this finally gets you to pull the trigger, know that the game is 70% off until its inevitable delisting. $12 for Deadpool doesn't sound so bad, though the PC version doesn't include the DLC that was released (go figure).

News:: Blizzard is planning an Xbox One X update for Overwatch

The Xbox One X is out in the wild and to those of you with data caps, godspeed. It can already be a tricky balancing act with how large game file sizes have grown and how frequent updates have become, but add in the possibility of 4K assets, and yikes. Suddenly I'm finding myself re-reading my ISP's fine print and re-checking my data usage for the month. It's now permanently on the back of my mind.

Anyway, on that cheerful note, Blizzard says it's getting to work on an Xbox One X update for Overwatch.

"The team is currently exploring how the game experience can be enhanced on this platform to leverage the console's incredible hardware, and is working on implementing 4K resolution in the game on Xbox One X," a company representative told Windows Central. "It is very important for the team to make sure the user interface looks natural on a truly big screen. We will share more details about our plans for 4K support on Xbox One X later."

You might recall that there's a PlayStation 4 Pro update for Overwatch but maybe not the particulars. Namely, it added better texture filtering and a higher-resolution HUD, so, nothing too exciting. I would expect Blizzard to push that envelope further with its upcoming Xbox One X support.

News:: Pinball FX3 is now targeting a December release for Switch

The last we heard about the Switch port of Pinball FX3, it was on track to release tomorrow (November 14). Zen Studios must have encountered some kind of bug, because they've just announced that the extreme pinball simulator will now be targeting a December release date on Nintendo's portable console. No time frame was given, but the developer did say they will have specifics very soon.

At least Zen Studios is able to recognize an issue and delay the game instead of just unleashing it on the world, problems and all. More developers would be wise to follow such a practice, since a bad first impression can become hard to recover from in today's digital age.

News:: We've got some three-day PAX Unplugged passes to give away

The first ever PAX Unplugged is starting in just one week! It's nice to see a PAX that didn't sell out immediately. In fact, all but the Saturday tickets are still available on the show's website. But you know what? You, dear loyal Destructoid reader/tabletop game enthusiast, might not even need to buy a pass. Because we were able to snag ten of them to give away.

How do you enter? Quote this tweet on Twitter with your favorite board game and the hashtag #PAXUnplugged. That's it! You've got 280 characters to work with now, so you can even tell a short story about why it's your favorite. Up to ten winners will be selected at random on Tuesday, November 14 from any entrants, and will they be able to pick up a three-day pass at will call in Philadelphia.

If any of you say Monopoly is your favorite, you will be immediately disqualified as you are obviously a scalper trying to snag a badge to sell for that sweet profit. (Not really, but seriously, if Monopoly is your favorite board game, please play more board games.)

You still have to get yourself to Philadelphia, and figure out where to sleep, and keep yourself fed and clothed for the trip, but hey, if you've got that all sorted, you can save yourself the $60 it costs for a three-day pass.

News:: PS4 multiplayer is free in Europe during a 5-day event

A PlayStation Plus subscription is essential if you want to play PS4 games online, but how do you convince your friends that it's worth the outlay? Sony has a simple idea: let people try it for free. It's running a Europe-only event that will make PS4 multiplayer free between November 15th and November 20th. So long as you have a game with an online multiplayer component, you can see what the fuss is about without signing up. If you've wanted to see how a Destiny 2 Crucible match works or have run out of local FIFA 18 foes, it won't cost you anything extra.

News:: You're looking at a hefty grind to unlock each hero in Star Wars Battlefront II

EA and DICE caught some flak over the ludicrous loot boxes in the beta for Star Wars Battlefront II, but the last we heard, everything was going to be revised. I guess the only logical outcome we should have expected was that EA was going to fleece us even harder, as some users have found out just how far EA is willing to go to make microtransactions work.

If you're an Origin or EA Access subscriber, then you were given early access to a 10 hour trial of the full game this past weekend. This trial allowed you to get a head start on leveling up and getting acquainted with the game prior to its launch this Friday. It also let people take a closer look at how the class progression system got tweaked.

For starters, all heroes and villains are locked from the start. Not even the first Battlefront did this, but you do not start the game with characters like Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker; they all must be unlocked by playing the game. Okay, I can live with that. How much time are we looking at to get them?

According to this Reddit thread, the total grind is around 40 hours per character. No, that was not a typo where I meant to type four hours; EA and DICE have tweaked the character progression system away from points earned per match to something based on playtime. A spreadsheet that details the breakdown of points per hour also comes up with the statement that, "It is currently 11.4X more efficient with your time to spend money in EA Battlefront II, rather than play it."

News:: A 'Hitman' series is coming to Hulu from the creator of 'John Wick'

Past attempts at Hitman movies haven't fared so well, but Hulu is betting that it can do justice to the assassination game franchise through an online series. Deadline has learned that Hulu is partnering with Fox 21 on a Hitman show that will be executive produced by Derek Kolstad, better known as the chief architect of the John Wick movies. You couldn't have asked for more appropriate talent, really -- he knows a thing or two about producing assassin-themed stories with memorable thrills. There are few details about the plot, but it'll reportedly hew closely to the story of IO Interactive's franchise, which is as much about Agent 47's mysterious origins as it is his targets.

News:: Blizzard teases the possibility of an Overwatch movie

I think at this point, Overwatch has earned its shot at a movie.

Blizzard has created short after emotional short for the universe, whether it's to promote an upcoming new character or just do a bit of worldbuilding -- and the comparisons to Pixar are usually flying left and right. I mean, it didn't work out so well for the Warcraft movie when Blizzard moved into that arena, but it would be a shame if they just gave up. Especially since Skylanders is about to debut its third season on Netflix, proving some degree of success.

Speaking of the Skylanders IP holder, Activision pushing Blizzard to do it is another reason why it might happen. Speaking to MCV, Activision Consumer Products Group head Tim Kilpin (who used to do franchise management at Disney), says that an Overwatch movie project is something that the company "would like very much" to go ahead on.

Expanding a bit, Kilpin states, "We’re a platform and a portfolio, these franchises exist across multiple platforms. It’s not just the game as a driver, but it’s linear content [movies and TV] as a way to expand the audience and expand the opportunity and then esports [too]. Pull all that together and you’re talking about franchises that are frankly like no other."

I mean yeah, it could work. Just keep it simple, Overwatch versus Talon, or the Rise of the Omnics storyline, and it would be a pretty marketable concept. Maybe one that people have seen before (superhero film or sci-fi dystopia respectively), but marketable nonetheless.

News:: Rime has some issues on the Nintendo Switch

This game was originally released for other platforms back in May of this year. After finally getting my hands on the Nintendo Switch version, almost six months later, I think it’s fairly safe to say that the delay was a good call. Even with the extra time, the port still suffers from a myriad of issues.

Let’s start with the basic stuff: Rime is meant to be played on a large screen. The portability of the Switch offers almost nothing to the experience and simultaneously manages to dull it considerably. Headphones can help with the immersion of any handheld gaming session, but the tiny external speakers on the system dilute the sound to the point that they’re a necessity.

I’m no expert when it comes to resolution, so it really surprised me how noticeable the difference was between portable and docked modes. The game straight up looks cheap on the small screen. It’s pretty decent when displayed on a television, but, even then, it still looks worse than versions available on other platforms.

News:: What non-blockbusters are you looking forward to?

Look, we pretty much know what the rest of the year looks like in terms of number one opening weekends. It's going to go like this including this week's number one: Thor Justice League > CocoStar Wars > Jumanji/Pitch Perfect 3. You could almost set your watch to that. But it's also the end of the year, which means there's going to be a ton of award hopefuls hitting in limited release, and a ton of other movies just coming out hoping to catch some of that holiday cash.

We can all look forward to those blockbusters for sure, but which of the smaller films are you going to be gunning out to see in the few lulls between big releases? I've got The Disaster Artist reserved for possibly my favorite movie of the year, but I also want to make sure I see All the Money in the World (with no more Kevin Spacey) and The Post (which never had Kevin Spacey). Of course there is Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis' the Phantom Thread to take in all the directing/acting glory as well. I've also got a hankering that I'm going to dig the uncomfortable Beatriz at Dinner

So how are you going to get all snobby with your movies as the year ends?

News:: Here's the DLC schedule for Wolfenstein II

If you aren't ready to leave Wolfenstein II's cathartic shootouts behind just yet, keep in mind that it won't be much longer before the game picks back up with some story-based DLC. We've known what the season pass entailed for a while now, but not we know precisely how everything's lined up.

The Adventures of Gunslinger Joe

December 14

As former professional quarterback Joseph Stallion, smash through Nazi hordes from the ruins of Chicago to the vastness of space!

The Diaries of Agent Silent Death

January 30

As ex-OSS agent and assassin Jessica Valiant, infiltrate Nazi bunkers in California and discover the secrets of Operation San Andreas!

The Amazing Deeds of Captain Wilkins

March 2018

As the US Army's renowned hero Captain Gerald Wilkins, embark on a mission to Nazi-controlled Alaska to dismantle Operation Black Sun!

This is all in addition to the DLC opener Episode Zero, which was offered as an incentive for pre-ordering Wolfenstein II and is also included in the $25 season pass along with these three upcoming add-ons.

I haven't beaten the game yet (I actually just started it this weekend) but so far, so good. I'm finding the story and characterization to be even more gripping than its predecessor's and the combat more satisfying and well-rounded. Something tells me I'm going to burn through this one soon enough.

News:: The Walking Dead Season 8 Recap: 'Some Guy'

Essentially, 'Some Guy' is an introspective into Ezekiel and watching his heretofore unshakeable conviction be not only shaken, but broken. It's interesting to watch, though the early contrast scenes are perhaps the most the most effective, as they build on his bravado from last week, wherein he exclaims how they've not 'lost a single one' in their latest battle with the saviors. When Ezekiel comes to his senses, he's lost every single one (or seemingly).

Right around this time, when Ezekiel realizes that his entire group has been blown to pieces by heavy machine-gun nest first, and his former friends and followers are zombifying, we turn to Carol, who split apart from the group and is inside the building where the machine-gun is hidden. Carol pulls some Carol maneuvers, and all is well with the world. Not everyone in our HAK (Hilltop-Alexandria-Kingdom) alliance is an idiot. We still have some operators! And I find myself thinking, man, Carol is an effective tool in highlighting smart survival skills versus poor ones. The annihilation that took place outside, Ezekiel's utter failure, is in greater contrast when thrown up against some of Carol's standard winner-decision-making. It's most effective to show idiocy versus smarts. Or it would be, if Carol remained consistent.

After dispatching 5 guys in utter perfection, she can't commit a similar ambush with the same efficiency, and instead sets up one of the least believable gun standoffs ever (another 5 guys versus her, pinned down behind a pickup truck). Not only do the superior numbers not flank her, or rush her, or anything, they don't instantly kill her when Carol pulls a fake-surrender

In earlier seasons of TWD, character stupidity is more easily forgiven as the world is newer, the odds less known, and the depth of evil of their enemy less explored. Now, in season 8, we should be dealing with survivors: people who are either very mean, very clever, or both. Yet, we continue to see people exhibit the street smarts of novices plucked off our own streets. I don't buy it, and I especially don't buy it when it comes from the Saviors -- a group that has proven tactical smarts behind its organization (and utter ruthlessness!). When someone begs for their life in exchange for information, do you get close enough that they can get a knife on you? NO! You pull a Daryl and gun them down when they've said whatever they're going to say.

Here, it's interesting to see how the Saviors act as you'd expect HAK to act, and Daryl to behave as you'd expect a Savior to act. Intentional? Perhaps, but the idea that there are two sides to every coin and that labels can be applied by both sides (bad guy / good guy) has been explored before. In fact, the only group that seems to get universal labeling may be cannibals.

If you're expecting action to expand beyond this limited theater, reel in those expectations now. This episode follows Ezekiel, and his growing horror at not only failure, but leading totally faithful people to their death, and his responsibility for that fact. His nature fights itself, with survival instincts kicking in here and there, and a willingness to die to protect more of his people, but ultimately, he becomes beaten down, and eventually settles on the conclusion that he's better left to die because he's just some guy. But others see value in him beyond his most recent failure. They're either incredibly insightful (Jerry), or they've lived harder lives (Carol) in this post-apocalyptic world, and know that even the best leaders and people suffer losses and must go on.

Rick and Darryl make one appearance at just the right moment so that the death of the entire Kingdom army is not without purpose. The guys are secured, and Carol proves that she'll choose to help a man she admired instead of pursuing a tactical mission. OK. Point proven, yet did we need to spend an entire episode demonstrating that anyone's faith can be shaken in this zombie kingdom? We know this already--and it felt like a cheap gimmick when that last big death happened. I know it's supposed to pull tears, but I just felt angry--it was unnecessary, and cut short an interesting plot line for no apparent reason (other than perhaps budgetary constraints to animate a tiger?).

So, again, we've progressed a few hours in this same day that's comprised the first four episodes of the season, but it's unclear if any of this action has shifted things in favor of one group or another--I really can't tell. Rick and company have more guns, but in terms of casualties, they seem to be losing (since they take prisoners). They're down one super-tiger, and one shaken leader.

What do you think? Who's winning so far? How did you take the death of Shiva? Unnecessary, or a correcting of an unlikely plot device that probably shouldn't have existed in the first place?

Also--what do you think Negan is going to do to Gabriel (if anything)? The teaser scenes for next week promise we're headed back to the Sanctuary, finally.

News:: Man, Mega Man 8 had some great art

A few weeks ago, a Mega Man fan named Heidi Kemps obtained a whole box of original Mega Man 8 animation cels for $300 at a swap meet. It just kind of organically happened, too -- Kemps states that a seller "noted [their] interest in historical Capcom material, and pulled out a giant box of Mega Man 8 cels."

Those very cels are up for auction now and you can find the entire listing on this landing page here, compliments of Rockman Corner. Dr. Light is already sold out, which leaves you with Mega Man, Guts Man, and two Duo prints. They're not going for an astronomical amount so it stands to reason that you could nab one.

Mega Man 8 truly was a fantastic entry, and one of my favorites to this day. The animations are superb, Duo was a great way to shake up the "Classic" series in a way that sort of felt X-like in nature, and the Robot Masters are some of the most lively in the franchise.

News:: Review in Progress: South Park: Phone Destroyer

This past weekend was my first time playing South Park: The Stick of Truth. Getting it as a bonus with my purchase of The Fractured But Whole, I finally decided to give it a shot and ended up beating the entire thing in two sittings. It’s a great fucking game and it completely wipes away years of absolute garbage South Park games. And I’m talking some real shitty titles. South Park Rally anyone? Playing that is like finding out you just ate your parents at the Chili Con Carnival.

Thank God for The Stick of Truth because we now have a blueprint for future South Park games. South Park: Phone Destroyer is very much in the mold of Obsidian’s near masterpiece but it could prove to be more problematic the longer I play.

News:: Japan's Splatfest results are lacking bitterness

The results are in from Japan's latest Splatfest, which saw weekend warriors fight it out on Splatoon 2 to decide whether fried food (or "Karaage") works best with or without lemon.

When all was said and done, Marina's "Team No-Lemon" won both single and team play, with a couldn't-be-narrower 51% of the score. Interestingly, the public vote actually went in Pearl's favour, with Team Lemon taking 54% of the vote. In all cases it was a very close affair, but this one goes to our deck-spinning, tentacled friend.

With such close results, clearly Splatoon's lemon question was one of the most divisive yet. America will be next to wage war in the arena shooter, with Sci-Fi vs Fantasy kicking off this Friday, November 17 at 21:00 PT.

Beat Sports came and went with few people even having a chance to play it. When it released, it was considered one of the better games on Apple TV, a platform that isn't exactly famous for its games.

The Nintendo Switch is giving the rhythm party game another chance at an audience, but with that comes a cost: on a much more popular platform, it will be compared to its wealth of excellent titles. It's a matchup that leaves Super Beat Sports a little less rosy.
