News::Tuesday Newsday: Mortal Kombat Ecks, Sonic Boom fizzles, and Homefront: The Revolution

There's a hot drizzle of news leading up to E3, and Max is here to suck it down and spit it back at you! A sequel to Homefront is actually happening, for some reason. Ed Boon officiates the new MK as Mortal Kombat X (as in Ecks Vs. Sever). Sonic Boom isn't very impressive, surprising no one. Battlefield: Hardline had leak of beta footage. And many, many more stories, which Max will tell you if you watch this video instead of just reading about it.

News::So that's what Valve's virtual-reality headset looks like

Valve has been working in the virtual-reality space with a prototype head-mounted display of its own, and by most accounts, the device provides an experience unlike any other VR demo.

The company brought another iteration of the tech to the Boston VR Bender this week and there are a bunch of photos from attendees for us to gawk at. Not shown in the image above is a desk-mounted camera, used in conjunction with the headset. Several of the other shots give a better sense of just how far down it extends. This thing is a beast.

For hands-on impressions, redditor jonomf has posted an account of his experience with the HMD. He says these units are used for convenient testing at Valve and are not a move away from the previously talked about VR demos which use a literal room painted with QR codes.

So I found some pictures of the new Valve HMD prototype from the Boston Bender on twitter. [reddit] [Image source]

News::Monochroma Review - Mouse n Joypad

Gale writes - "If theres one thing every platformer has to get right, then its the controls. They need to be precise and without delay. In Monochroma, this is never the case. Quite the contrary, actually. The way the protagonist is controlled is bound to annoy the living hell out of an average player, and thats before the brothers start dying not because of your own failure to calculate a jump, but because the input delay made you miss it. Its not that this is just an occasional issue, either. This problem will be with you every step of the way, making sure youre not having too much fun, I guess."

News::Descend into Darkness with Tormentum, an Upcoming Point-and-Click Adventure

Sometimes when going into the are video games art? discussion, we neglect to remember that the graphics alone can resemble masterpieces. Polish OhNoo Studios newest game, Tormentum, is a point-and-click adventure with art youd mistake for van Goghs in a museum. A nameless amnesiac finds himself in a cage positioned under a flying contraption. With only a vague memory of a statue with human hands lingering in his mind, he wants to summon back his past. However, the flying ship lands in a mysterious, dark castle, entrapping him. Solving a variety of puzzles with locks, traps, and gates, he plans to travel this surreal, strange world to uncover the truth about himself. Journeying along the three different lands, he encounters various allies and foes, making moral choices that impact the ending of the game.

EGMR writes: "Among the Sleep is a good game that caters to horror fans who are after something fresh. It's a bit pricey, short and could have been more, but if you've been looking forward to play it then you won't be let down. For those who want their horrors to be really scary though, you might want to look elsewhere or adjust your expectations, as this one is about the psychology behind it, which makes for an engaging story and an absolutely stunning world. News::Review: Among the Sleep | Rely on Horror

Rely on Horror: Among the Sleep instantly grabbed my attention when it was first announced due to its interesting premise and an unlikely protagonist: an infant. The survival horror genre excels at making players feel uncomfortable due to an increased sense of vulnerability. Playing as a small child meant that this game would star a protagonist thats greatly disempowered and not suited to fight, let alone escape from surrounding horrors. Krillbite has an exceptional premise, one that I had hoped would become one of the best horror games this year, but the execution leaves something to be desired.

News::The Last Tinker: City of Colors Review | GameGrin

Back in the PS2/Xbox/GameCube era, 3D platformers were all the rage. Seemingly every developer wanted to capitalise on the success of Super Mario 64 and put their own stamp on the genre using the new technology. It was the source of many poor imitations with little imagination, but in the right hands the genre also brought some of the best games of the generation. Titles such as Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, and Psychonauts proved that with the right combination of fun, fluid gameplay, great visuals and charming characters, youve got a surefire classic on your hands.

GameGrin's James Furlong writes: "Its fair to say that on the release of the Naval Strike DLC for Battlefield 4 the game was in the worst position it had been in, in its already quite controversial history. So, to say the game was in its worst state is quite a strong statement."

News::Kombat Returns - My Mortal Kombat Wish List

CCC Says: "There is nothing that gives me a nostalgic overload more than hearing the GONG sound of Mortal Kombats title screen. I literally cut my teeth on this fighting franchise (which in my estimation made Street Fighter its bitch). The mid 90s was such a fun time for a preteen kid like me to hang out at the arcade, and I have to credit a large part of that to the buzz generated around these digitized fighters. Even the home ports (some being better than others) were cause for many kids to beg their parents to buy them a whole new gaming system. I know, because I was one of those kids."

News::Preview - Sniper Elite 3 | Can it compare to COD or Battlefield? | ArabicGamers

ArabicGamers writes: Im a big fan of sniper games. Ive always admired them and love the more softly-softly-catchy-monkey approach to the genre. I love the thrill of finding a great sniping position and just watching your enemies on patrols, taking them out one by one so as not to alert the others in the area. I love sneaking up behind enemies and taking them out silently with either a knife or a pistol, silenced of course and sneaking on my way. I love trying to confuse the enemy by planting traps or shooting explosive containers or vehicles that not only take out a multitude of bad guys, but also create a distraction. What I dont like is being forced down a corridor with limited shooting positions and very little in the way of cover or alternative routes. This, unfortunately, was the biggest problem in Sniper Elite II and despite some great set pieces, it felt a little unoriginal after the first mission or two.
