News::Demon-slaying Vita owners, put Toukiden on your radar
Gallery site extraordinaire All Games Beta posted some eye-catching images from Toukiden, a game I thought I hadn't heard of before that was, in fact, announced by Tecmo Koei last year during the Tokyo Game Show. Developed by Omega Force, this PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita action title has demon battling with cross-platform play which is enough for me. I'm officially paying attention now and forever.
If you need more to go on, be sure to glance over the official Toukiden site for some great enemy art, or the gallery below. If this plays half as well as it looks, it'll be one to watch and inevitably warrant demands for localization.

News::Tomb Raider vid puts the 'fun' in 'fundamentals'
Square Enix released yet another Tomb Raider video centered around features players can look forward to in the upcoming reboot of the franchise. Here you'll learn about the "Base Camp" system, special locations where Lara can use salvage to upgrade her equipment, and functioning as locations for fast travel through the game's open island environment. In the event that you have not yet played a game featuring fast travel, you're in for a treat here.
They also introduce a concept called "Gear Gating," which is a buzzwordly way of saying you're going to use equipment to open new areas to explore as you progress through the game. It's all told in dramatic narration and it sounds really impressive until you realize that they're hyping basic mechanics present in action-adventure games for more than a decade. Of course, that's not any reflection on the game itself (which I'm quite keen on) but maybe I'll lay off watching the marketing for a bit.

News::New Metal Gear Play Arts Kai figures in the works
Hideo Kojima Tweeted out early looks at some upcoming Metal Gear Solid Play Arts Kai figures recently. There's a new color job for Raiden's Metal Gear Solid 4 look, and there's a figure coming out based on his look in Metal Gear Solid 2 as well. Liquid Snake from the first Metal Gear Solid is getting some toy loving soon too.
There's also another toy in the works, but it's only a teaser image as the picture shows off the figure hiding underneath a 25th anniversary box. We won't know what character that is until Wonder Festival 2013 Winter, but the other three toys will be on display at New York Toy Fair this weekend.

News::Horror game Daylight relies on procedural generation
Blacklight Retribution developer Zombie Studios had previously shared a few details on its unnamed horror game, though there was a bit too much left to the imagination. As we now know via IGN, Daylight will utilize procedural generation and is intended to take around half an hour to play through once -- but much more of a time investment will be required to experience everything.
Speaking to the outlet at the 2013 D.I.C.E. Summit, Jared Gerritzen said that “Different players will have a totally different experience. You're essentially a rat in a cage, but the cage is an asylum and it's scary as hell. You need to find your way out, and each time you do it it's completely different."
"We have so much content story-wise that it hopefully, whether the person manages to succeed to the end or not, will be an experience that they want to capture more of the story so they have to go back and replay, because each time you might be getting different story elements," stated writer Jessica Chobot. "And over the course of that time, depending on how long you decide to play and what you find, it opens up the concept of the world a little more, the backstory, what your involvement is in it, how you find yourself here and whatnot."
Most exciting to me is the fact that in Daylight, you'll have a cellphone, and possibly flares to scare off Phantoms, but that's about it -- no real weapons. "You literally have to run away when a Phantom is attacking you, and those things are really interesting," explained Gerritzen. The game will be $20 or less when it hits Steam this year, which seems like a good price point based on what we know thus far. Zombie expects to put out additional content for Daylight, such as "more systems" or "story elements," down the road.

News::The Last of Us is getting a live action treatment
What Remains is a fan made live action series based on Naughty Dog's The Last of Us . Impressive that this is happening before the game has even released!
The series is being made by Manifest Film, and the teaser trailer here is showing off their capabilities and what they're looking to do. As for the story, it's set to follow a few human survivors living outside of the safety zone of human colonies.
Looks neat! Really digging the makeup on the Fungus creatures.

News::The AMC Walking Dead game finally gets a gameplay trailer
With just about two months before release, Activision and developer Terminal Reality have finally released a real gameplay trailer for The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct . It's looking a little better than what we saw from that spliced together alpha footage. Kind of.
I don't know. I still have my doubts about this one, especially after the game's release actually got moved up. Yeah, that's right. Survival Instinct was originally slated for a March 26 release, but is now coming out on March 19 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U. Oh boy.

News::Bethesda puts out improved HD textures for Skyrim DLC
While it would have been nice to see Dragonborn for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim hit PC earlier than it did, the Steam release is now behind us, and Bethesda has a nice bonus on top of it. For those users who can handle high-resolution textures, the studio has put out an update which offers improved textures for Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and the aforementioned add-on.
"Before you download, make sure your PC has the horsepower to support it," cautions Bethesda. "Make sure your system requirements exceed Skyrim's recommended specs before attempting to install, and that your PC has Windows Vista/7, a minimum of 4GB of system RAM, and a DirectX 9.0c compatible NVIDIA or AMD ATI video card with at least 1 GB of RAM and the latest drivers."
Speaking of Skyrim, I need to get around to reinstalling one of these days -- I'm now physically and mentally ready to spend a weekend screwing around with mods. From the looks of it, there's plenty of catching up to do.

News::Game industry refuses to grow up, says David Cage
David Cage has used his DICE 2013 talk to take aim at a game industry with ‘Peter Pan syndrome’. The head of the Beyond: Two Souls and Heavy Rain studio criticised the medium as a whole for refusing to grow up while failing to move past the same old themes and genres.
“It’s time to reassess who we are, and what we are doing,” said Cage, according to Gamasutra. “Only three genres [make] the charts. Kids games, Casual games, and violent action games. When you think about it, you realize we use the same themes, the same worlds, for about 40 years. You’re a hero, and you need to kill people in order to go somewhere, free the world, free the princess, or whatever.”
“Many times when I play a game, I get the feeling I’ve played it a million times before,” he continued. “We need to move away from our traditional market, which is kids, teenagers, young adults. Think about your friends who don’t play. Think about your parents. Do they play console games? Most of the time they don’t play video games. They barely know they exist. But you can talk about books, movies, TV, with them, because those mediums are perceived as being for everyone.”
Cage went on to explain his nine point plan for change, intended to help the game industry move forward, mature and become mass market. “This new form of entertainment should be accessible to all, should be open to all themes and genres, and should be able to talk about ourselves, human beings, and societies, in a meaningful way,” he added. “It should be based on the journey, not the challenge. Finally, we will have a chance to become mass market.”

News::Antichamber recouped Indie Fund investment in an hour
You probably knew that Antichamber had, prior to its release last week, been in development for years. What you might not have known is that designer Alexander Bruce got financial support from the Indie Fund to help see the project through to completion.
"Antichamber recouped its Indie Fund investment less than an hour after launch," reads an updated Indie Fund blog post. "Alex needed very little money from us, so that by itself doesn't say much, but the game did have an amazingly excellent launch day, both financially and critically."
Despite being well received by what seemed to be most people who played Antichamber at conventions and the like, I could absolutely have envisioned a future in which it didn't catch on commercially. Screw you, healthy cynicism. After reaching the top of the Steam charts on Friday, it's lovely to see the game still sitting in the top five today.

News::World's greatest videogame box art found in Africa
After all the drama surrounding BioShock Infinite's cover, I was ready to initiate a period of recovery and stop talking about box art for a good long while. In retrospect, that should have contained a get-out-of-jail-free clause for notable exceptions that would be simply impossible to resist bringing to your attention. Rules were meant to be broken.
In a piece for The Gameological Society, Joe Keiser writes about the current state of bootlet videogames in Nairobi, Kenya. "It is a beautiful, terrible place, perhaps my favorite in the city. And they sell games here, the sort of games you would expect in a place where only some of the rooms have a floor. Which is to say they are delirious hacks of old, pirated PlayStation 2 standards, from all over the world, with cover art that is uniformly amazing."
The end result is indeed amazing, to the point where the interpretations of these games look superior to their legitimate counterparts. It's worth pointing out that the three featured above are only the very beginning. For more, check out the extended collection over here.
