News:: Shadow of War pre-order deals: $21 off, bottle opener, or Ring of Power

We thought publishers have done away with retailer-exclusive pre-order bonuses, but it appears Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is one such exception. While all retailers and platform versions will include the same in-game digital pre-order bonuses, we've spotted THREE different physical bonuses at different retailers if you pre-order before the Tuesday, October 10, 2017, release date.

Combined with the PC digital pre-order cash discount incentive (up to $22 off!), there are four deals to ponder through for fans of the series. (Particularly those that have moved past the loot crate system within the game).

Middle-earth: Shadow of War Pre-Order Deals

PC

Console

Physical Pre-Order Bonuses

By all accounts, the GameStop pre-order bonus Bottle Opener looks pretty dope in our opinion. I mean we are as sober as a dry county but that seems like a neat trinket to receive if you're a big Lord of the Rings fan, nevermind the Middle-earth game series.

Conversely, the silver replica Ring of Power (doubtful that it's actual silver) from Best Buy isn't half-bad as well, especially since pre-ordering at Best Buy will also earn you $10 in rewards certificate good for more games at Best Buy.

Coming in the last place of most desired physical goodie in the Middle-earth: Shadow of War pre-order trinket roundup would be Walmart's exclusive "Kontrol Freek" skin. Themed with Shadow of War decal, you can affix these removable skin onto your controllers. Why? Who the hell knows.

Given most of us at Dealzon are PC gamers, we'll opt for the straight-up $21 cash discount. But if we had to make a pick, the bottle opener seems like a sweet pick-up, particularly as a last-resort weapon in a zombie apocalypse. Trade off is you'll have to trek to your local GameStop to ensure you receive the goodie. Hmm...

News:: EVE Online's free-to-play experience is being vastly expanded later this year

CCP had a rather low key keynote for its EVE Vegas event, but there were a few big announcements regarding their mainstay, EVE Online, that a lot of returning players and newcomers are going to be looking forward to.

Along with the Lifeblood expansion on October 24, CCP has been working on overhauling the Alpha (read: free-to-play) experience for EVE as a direct result of fan feedback. The main draw is that Alpha users will now be able to use more skills (one of the main sources of progression in EVE), including Tech II (T2) and small/medium weapons (a change that sparked a huge cheer from the crowd), and access all factions. Game designer CCP Rise provided an exact number on the increase too -- Alphas can now train from a five million skill point (SP) cap all the way up to roughly 20.5 million. They can also use battlecruisers and battleships, which elicited screams of joy and nervous laughter respectively. CCP explained that while the latter class of ship is relatively big time for any given free Alpha player, they're not allowing them to access Tech II with battleships right away, and will assess the situation and balance as needed.

They conveyed the message that these alterations would be better for a more long term sustainable play style for Alpha users, but there is a catch -- you need need to subscribe to premium (Omega) to train up past the five million SP mark, at which point you can reach the cap of 20.5m. If you unsubscribe and become Alpha again, that's when you can use skills up to that new cap of 20.5m. We can expect to see this update later this year.

It's amazing to see how upfront CCP is with community interacting, openly encouraging players to come up to them during the Vegas event and request features or give general feedback, even if it's negative. It's the inverse of what a lot of big publishers are doing with their closed door, "we know better" approach, and I think it's working out for the Iceland-based studio. While a lot of feedback from any given gaming community can result in a lot of yelling, CCP seems to know how to filter it out and squeeze diamonds out of any given lump of coal.

News:: EVE Online goes mobile with Project Aurora

The rumors are true -- CCP is bringing the EVE Online universe into the mobile arena with Project Aurora.

Announced at EVE Vegas today, Aurora is described as a free-to-play game set in the EVE universe. It's jointly developed by EVE creator CCP and the mobile studio PlayRaven, and will follow the whole MMO archetype once again. While it's not actually out (and CCP was quick to explain that "there is no current release date") EVE Vegas attendees will be able to actively test Project Aurora on both iOS and Android platforms this weekend in "pre-alpha" form.

Although the Icelandic studio started out as primarily a PC dev, they've since branched out to consoles and the mobile space in an attempt to push more EVE experiences across the world. As you might have expected the reaction to Aurora wasn't met with as much enthusiasm in the crowd as everything leading up to it, but this is a thing now, and I'll be able to test out a build soon enough to see how it stacks up.

News:: ‘Eve Online’ is going mobile next year with ‘Project Aurora’

Popular space MMO Eve Online has been doing pretty well lately, bringing a massive map, galactic trade economies and the vastness of space to players over its 14-year history. It's made several moves to keep folks interested in its PC-based game title, too. Developer CCP Games, has made Eve Online free to download and play while also allowing players to participate in finding exoplanets in real life. Now the team is partnering with mobile game developer PlayRaven to bring Eve Online-style multiplayer action to mobile devices. Dubbed "Project Aurora," the upcoming title for iOS and Android is set to launch later in 2018.

News:: Upcoming Switch patch will fix some of those Stardew Valley bugs

It's delightful knowing that a whole bunch of people are digging into Stardew Valley for the first time now that it has come to Nintendo Switch. If you're among them, or are simply back for round two, excellent! I'm about to join you and become overwhelmed by livestock upkeep. (Early-game money is better spent elsewhere but I need to have chickens keeping me company, you know?)

Players have caught some issues with the Switch port and the developers are prepping a patch:

  • Audio crackling – Some players have been reporting a crackling noise coming out of the left speaker on the Switch during gameplay. If this happens to you, try closing the application and re-starting!
  • Unable to select certain items in crafting menu – specifically, some players have reported not being able to select items on the bottom right. (For a temp-workaround players can disable the option 'Use controller-style menus' – that should allow players to select things until a fix is distributed.)
  • Journey of the Prairie King minigame A/B inputs are swapped
  • Game crash when opening the journal if there are no active quests

"We're sorry for letting these slip through, but we're investigating and will provide fixes ASAP," publisher Chucklefish said in a blog post.

I haven't downloaded Stardew on Switch just yet knowing full well that the moment I set foot on the overgrown farm for the first time, that's three hours out the window right there.

News:: CCP announces expansion into four EVE Fanfests, including unannounced east coast site

After opening with a few words on the recent Vegas tragedy (and a list of blood drives attendees could visit), Icelandic developer CCP kicked off their sixth EVE Vegas fan event for the massively popular MMO EVE Online with some data, which nicely segued into their plan to expand the Fanfest banner into four locations in 2019 -- the existing Iceland and Vegas, as well as "EVE Down Under" in Australia, and an undisclosed east coast event (Boston and DC were mentioned, but not confirmed).

As for 2018 Eve Fanfest in Iceland is still alive and well from April 12-14, and tickets are actually on sale now for what will be one of their "biggest Fanfests ever." You might want to attend that one if you're a big EVE player too, because in light of the multi-event expansion, CCP also explained that the main Fanfest will be downplayed a bit in an effort to make the rest bigger. When 2020 hits, CCP says it'll bring it back to full strength from April 2-4, but plans are still fairly nebulous that far out.

So how about that data? Well, of the roughly 812 fans attending the EVE Vegas event this weekend (of which I'm in attendance), 738 are from the US, followed by the UK and Canada. In all roughly 1,000 people will be partaking in the various activities of EVE Vegas, including panels, playable games (with a big emphasis on Sparc and Valkyrie), as well as social gatherings that promote general community building.

Having attended Fanfest proper and EVE Vegas, at this point I can form a clear picture of what the community is like at these officially sanctioned events. They're passionate, and that feeds CCP in its development -- something they didn't just tell us about in the opening keynote, but showed, with lots of focus on fan requests that they've implemented over the years or are going to implement, and even granular reddit post slides.

They were also pretty hardcore about promoting all of the miniature grassroots fests thrown around the world, a process that eventually led them to expanding their horizons. If all of the cheers from the keynote were any indication, it's only good news for CCP and the future of the game's fanbase.

News:: Inversus Deluxe is a monochrome masterpiece

When Inversus came out a little over a year ago, it would've been easy to take a look and think it's a little too simple to be entertaining. At first glance, it looks like a throwback to the very earliest video games, nothing but black and white boxes shooting dots at one another. There's a lot more than meets the eye here though, and it was one of our highest-rated games of 2016 for a reason. With Inversus Deluxe, there's even more to recommend.

News:: The creator of Dust: An Elysian Tail is making an MGS1-inspired stealth game

If you close your eyes and imagine what the next game from Dust: An Elysian Tail creator Dean Dodrill might look like, I'm willing to bet that this game, Never Stop Sneakin', isn't at all what you envisioned.

That said, I think this is going to make a certain group of players really happy.

Although this type of game doesn't speak to me as much as something like Dust, which was right in my wheelhouse, I appreciate a studio willing to aim for something so different and unexpected.

"I wanted to create something procedural and infinitely re-playable, and design engaging combat with the simplest controls possible," Dodrill noted on Twitter. "I think I've accomplished these things, and it's been a thrill to create something completely different from Dust:AET."

The premise, tone, and mechanics? Cool. I'm in. But the PS1-era aesthetic? I'll need some warming up.

Never Stop Sneakin' is slated for a holiday 2017 launch on Nintendo Switch.

News:: Yooka-Laylee is getting a collector's box with a new statue

Yooka-Laylee has been a bit of a contentious game for many. While diehard fans of Rare's classic 3D platformers are in love with the title, a lot of people have complained about the antiquated design choices that developer Playtronic took with creating the game. I honestly didn't care either way, not having much in the way of nostalgia for Rare's N64 days.

That being said, I figured a collector's edition for the game would have been a part of the Kickstarter campaign all those years ago. While the exclusion of such a package is being remedied, I'm still a little baffled this new edition doesn't include the game. Coming from seller Project Triforce, the Yooka-Laylee Collector-Boxie will be retailing for $59.99 and includes a statue of the duo along with concept art cards, pins and a keychain.

Since this isn't an official Playtronic release, I suppose that explains the absence of the game. This is also probably more for fans that already own the game, but it would have been nice to get a download code for your platform of choice. Either way, that statue looks super nice and its cool to see a collector's package release after the game was a bonafide hit instead of before.

News:: Dead Rising 4's new mode looks real silly

Sometimes, all it takes is an image. "That's it. I'm writing this up. Folks need to see." This screenshot of Frank West pulling off his best Sissel-from-Ghost Trick impression is one such example.

What's going on here? The Dead Rising series is no stranger to cameo outfits from other Capcom series and Dead Rising 4 is up next with a full-fledged mode, Capcom Heroes, an alternate take on the game's story. Once it releases for free on December 5, you'll be able to wear over a dozen referential outfits based on the likes of Cammy, X, Dante, and more, and wield new special attacks.

"While progressing through missions and exploring the world, players will discover arcade machines," explains Capcom. "Interacting with these arcade cabinets lets the player equip a new 'Hero Outfit' that gives Frank the powers and abilities of that character. In addition to using the arcade machines, Frank can purchase some outfits from vendors and unlock others by finding collectibles hidden throughout the world. Players will also want to look for 'Hero Training' side missions which award outfit variants and upgrades."

This doesn't magically fix Dead Rising 4, but I appreciate the absurdity of it all and am happy to see that it's a) free and b) not exclusive, timed or otherwise, to the upcoming PS4 port.

News:: One of Call of Duty's most iconic maps will be coming to Call of Duty: WWII

Call of Duty: WWII is looking to recapture the lost fan base from the older titles by going back to the series' roots. Just putting the game in World War 2 wasn't enough as Activision has announced that the most iconic map from the original game, Carentan, will be making a come back for WWII. Sadly, it isn't as simple as just including the remade map.

To get access to Carentan, you'll need to buy the season pass. As Activision puts it, "The Season Pass for Call of Duty: WWII is already bursting at the seams, but the addition of Carentan puts it over the top." Completely over the top, if you ask me!

News:: Switch takes Nintendo shares to a nine-year high

Various financial media outlets are reporting that Nintendo shares are on a huge climb. They raised 3.3% to ¥43,930, the highest they have been since September 2008 and the heady days of the Nintendo Wii.

A chart showing Nintendo shares' price progression over the last ten years paints a crystal clear picture of the stunning drop after everyone and their grandma purchased a Wii, followed by the barren years of the Wii U console, then an apparent rise to glory by the Switch's inception.

Taiwanese newspaper Digitimes states that Nintendo are set to hit an annual shipment of Switch consoles around the 20 million mark. If any further proof be needed of the new unit's hand in this climb, Nintendo share prices have altogether risen by 87% since March, when the machine was first launched.

News:: Team Vampire vs. Team Werewolf is a Splatfest worth fighting over

Europe is holding its own Splatfest this weekend about how to properly hang toilet paper, which still has me chuckling. What do we have coming up in North America? Something more appropriate for October. Something worth getting worked up over. It's none other than vampires versus werewolves.

It's going down in Splatoon 2, folks, and I'm torn. Both vampires and werewolves have had their ups and downs in movies, but I am leaning ever so slightly in the latter camp's direction. An American Werewolf in London is my absolute jam! If I could do a write-in, though, I'd be repping Team Mummy.

News:: Slick Overwatch Genji Figma coming from Good Smile Company

Good Smile Company have released images of the next Overwatch character to get the Figma treatment, and it's the cyber-ninja that can be the golden boy, or bring complete disaster to your random play, Genji.

Genji's Figma stands just under seven inches in height and comes with all the precise articulation one can expect from the Figma range. The wall-climbing assassin can be posed in a whole variety of dramatic (and comical) ways, ready to call for healing from behind-enemy-lines or on the highest point of the map, wherever's more difficult for you to reach.

Genji is second in the Overwatch Figma series joining series' poster gal Tracer. Genji is scheduled for release in June 2018. I'm not a big fan on the shuriken-chucking dude, but I think his look is perfect for the Figma style.

News:: Is it worth going a round with Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch?

I have a confession to make. I've never played the Xenoverse games.

I wrote off the first entry due to the poor reviews it received at the time. When the second rolled around, I was distracted by the multitude of other games that were coming out at the time and afterwards, and told myself I'd pick it up later. Flash forward to now, and I finally have my first taste of the series.

Unfortunately, the base game doesn't necessarily click with me, and the exclusive features for the Nintendo Switch version aren't necessarily helping its case either.

News:: Mario touring the USA to drive up Odyssey hype

Remember back in 1994, when WWE's Lex Luger went around America on a bus to build momentum for his upcoming Summerslam match with Yokozuna? Luger went from state-to-state kissing babies, signing autographs, and wearing stars and stripes Zubaz to get the country behind him for his defining moment, toppling the villainous WWE champion and taking the belt for Uncle Sam.

Then Summerslam happened and Luger choked.

Undaunted, Mario is taking a page out of the Luger handbook, and is preparing a bus tour of North America. Starting in Los Angeles on October 10 and ending in New York on October 26, one day before the launch of Super Mario Odyssey, the decked-out Super Mario Odyssey trailer will journey across the land, stopping to allow for photo sessions and for fans to try out the new game.

So keep an eye out for the colourful behemoth, adorned by a huge inflatable Cappy, if it rolls through a city near you. The tour will stop at Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Philadelphia and New York. Location details and times can be found on Nintendo's official site at the link below.

Whether Mario will be wearing stars and stripes Zubaz is sadly unconfirmed.

News:: New content for Hitman to be revealed October 24, but won't be Season 2

Hitman, 2016's best game, released levels in an episodic format that many agreed was a rare case of that release method working well. Each new level released was a large new map full of ways to kill both the story and elusive targets. Aside from elusive targets and small events, the last new piece of content, the Hokkaido level, was released on October 31, 2016.

Nearly one full year later, developer IO Interactive will reveal new content on October 24, 2017. "We're going to let the announcement itself do all the talking, but there is one thing we want to clarify before then; this upcoming content is not 'Season 2'. We're saying that now to keep expectations in check."

News:: Telltale's Batman Episode 2 appears to show image of real assassination victim

The second episode of Telltale Game's Batman series launched this week, but it was recently spotted by Twitter user BroTeamPill that the actual corpse of a murdered Russian diplomat featured in a still image, appearing briefly during the new episode's narrative.

You may remember the assassination of Russia's Turkish ambassador Andrei Karlov, who was shot dead last December during the opening of an art gallery in Ankara, a shocking event that was captured by the media in attendance. It appears that Karlov's corpse was shopped into the game from one of the photographs taken at the time, appearing on an in-game CCTV image showing a heist at the Gotham Brokerage.

Whilst we may never know whether this was just a terrible mistake by an artist, or (hopefully less likely) a sneaky joke done by a staff member, it is probably fair to assume that Telltale are working to remove the offending image.

I saw the scene in question myself when I reviewed the game, but it passed me by entirely. The image, and the photo it was captured from, can be seen in this article. Be warned that the pictures obviously feature an actual murder victim.

News:: Pacific Rim: Uprising trailer cram full of Jaegers fighting Kaiju

Pacific Rim has a pretty strong following of people who loved it. I found it to be a flawed spectacle that left me wishing for a sequel so that they could make a better movie. And now we have that sequel. After its appearance at NYCC today the first trailer for Pacific Rim: Uprising has landed, and it looks like a movie with Jaegers fighting Kaiju with ridiculous weapons so we know we've got that down.

With del Toro handing over directing duties Steven S. DeKnight taking over we're definitely getting a bit brighter, more comicy take it appears. The Jaegers are definitely a bit more streamlined in design and this trailer leans towards a more action heavy movie with an almost Saturday morning cartoon feel. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad one. The plot (full synopsis below) seems a bit more straight forward as well, not the original was all that complex. It'll be interesting to see if they can come up with something less generic than the characters of the first film or if we're just going to get another monster fighting film. I'll probably be fine with either, but I'd love for something more original to come out of this franchise.

News:: Are you for Forza or gaga over Gran Turismo?

Racing games are probably my least-played genre. It wasn't always that way though.

I distinctly remember chipping away at unlocks for hours on end in Project Gotham, getting lost in the intricacies of fine-tuning cars in early Gran Turismo entries, and doing 100+ lap races like they were nothing. Busting out the Pikes Peak Escudo and trying to beat my friend in a time trial or learning about various real-world locations like Cote d'azur or Laguna Seca (the latter of which I eventually got to drive a race car on via a replica track) -- it was a time in my life that I'll never forget.

But as my library grew and some of my car enthusiast friends moved away, so did my burning passion to tune up and tune out the rest of the world. As life's many responsibility grew I just didn't have time to be a master at every genre, though racing games do call me back frequently, whether it's for job-related reasons or just plain fun.

In recent years I've shifted from a die-hard GT fan into someone who prefers Forza. The arcadey elements of the Horizon series help, but I just appreciate the attention to detail that recent Forza games nail. That, and the idea of bringing out my racing wheel yet again for an Xbox One X edition is too cool to pass up.

How about you though? You don't have to pick one, you can also just declare your love or hatred for racing in general!

News:: Conan O'Brien tackles Shadow of War in new Clueless Gamer

There is a new episode of Conan O'Brien's Clueless Gamer series, where the chat-show host, comedian and former Simpsons writer tackles an upcoming title for a little bit of PR, to somewhat amusing effect.

The new episode has Conan try his hand at Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, alongside actor/comedian Kumail Nanjiani, who also features in the open-world sequel. Conan gets into a few battles, with varied success, which is kind of reflective of the comedy in these skits.

We also get to hear Nanjiani's "Orc voice" in action which, unsurprisingly, earns him some ridicule from Conan which Kumail then neatly transfers to the game's Creative Director, Michael de Plater.

The Xbox One X, Microsoft's mid-generation answer to the PlayStation 4 Pro, is launching next month. The $500 system is a more powerful version of the Xbox One that will "enhance" games up to 4K and 60 frames per second. News:: My Nintendo adds new rewards, but don't get too excited

TI have a lot of tired Nintendo jokes that are ironically amusing because Nintendo rarely changes their ways, but the whole My Nintendo shtick is pretty cut and dried at this point. There isn't much to say that hasn't already been said, but since some of you are still accruing (expiring) platinum and gold currency, you might like to know what's up.

So, since the launch of the system in March of 2016, I've been covering its highs and lows, just for you. And this week it's mostly lows yet again, as there's some new rewards that mostly consist of overpriced (gold-wise) discounts.

AS for recommendations, I'd go with Ultimate NES Remix, Majora 3D, Kersploosh, and Splatoon. You might own a lot of those already though, and they might be cheaper to buy in used form elsewhere! Be thrifty, my friends.

News:: Review: My Little Pony: The Movie

June 28, Hasbro has just released the trailer for My Little Pony: The Movie. I’m mildly impressed. It’s fun. Zany. Action-packed. It has great animation and it appears to have references designed for people over the age of twelve. Consider me in. Movies based on toys—scratch that—animated movies (No go, GI Joe) based on toys have come a long way in recent years. The LEGO Movie took the formula, smashed it to tiny little-hurt-so-fucking-much-to-step-on-pieces, and demonstrated that it can work and then some. Paging Hasbro, paging Hasbro! Time to get in on this shit, bros—scratch that—bronies!

Only that trailer was a lie! This sojourn into Equestria is colorful and features enhanced animation design over the television show the film is based off (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic), but beyond that this seems like a mindless, or at least mind-numbing attempt at a movie. I had trouble staying awake throughout, and while your eight-year-old might trance out, zombie-like, in front of the supersaturated ponies, there was at least one dad whose snores were audible throughout my screening.
