News:: Monster Crown mixes Pokemon with Monster Rancher to bring you monsteriffic bliss

I've never been the world's biggest fan of Pokémon, but I've always had a fondness for the adorable and sometimes weird Pocket Monsters that have graced our lives for some twenty years now. But back in the PS1 days, I was absolutely fascinated by the Monster Rancher series. It baffled my then ten-year-old mind (and even now at 31, it's pretty freakin' cool) that you could generate new and quirky monsters by just putting a random CD into your PlayStation and letting the magic of computers take the wheel. The fact that you could breed them was icing on the monster cake.

Well, now a game aims to combine elements of the two franchises to bring us back to the days of breeding and collecting monsters. Newly launched on Kickstarter, Monster Crown looks right up my alley to scratch that itch I first felt twenty years ago.

News:: Review: Metropolis: Lux Obscura

The whiskey tasted like shit, but it was sure better than the piss-soaked puddle of water I'd just dragged myself out of. As I slid the last sip of it down my throat I felt its sharpness mix with the blood in my windpipe. It numbed the pain in my ribs. Shit, if only you could wash away wounded pride so easily.

"Hey, Sugar..." The voice sounded angelic, but it came from the mouth of a devil in a D-cup. She slid alongside me, the ice-cold coolness in her ruby smile hiding a lifetime that had burned a hundred men, which was about to become a hundred and one.

"You look like you know a good time," she breathed. I sank into the glass to prevent trouble. Not tonight. Not any night. But her thigh pressed against mine hard, so dangerous it might has well have been a razor blade. She leaned into my ear, her words seductive and loaded with false promise. "I know a little game, if you wanna play with me..."

Her warm hand had already slid inside my jacket like a viper, and with the experience of thousand tired-eyed nights, she already had my controller in her hands. I guess now I was gonna have to play her game. How the fuck did it get this far? A better man would have got up and left; "No thanks, kitten. I'm gonna have to sit this one out."

I sat down the glass and pressed Start. Huh... A better man...

News:: Second 'Destiny 2' expansion, 'Warmind,' lands May 8th

Bungie promised two Destiny 2 expansions in the MMO-like shooter's first year, and we now know when that second add-on will arrive. Warmind is slated to arrive on May 8th, with more details arriving in a Twitch stream on April 24th. There's virtually nothing else to share about the DLC, but the title speaks volumes: it's clearly going to focus on the interplanetary AI systems (such as Rasputin and Charlemagne) humanity counted on for defense in its glory days.

News:: New Destiny 2 expansion Warmind releasing May 8

Bungie has shared an updated roadmap for Destiny 2 that stretches into September (with new features like weapon randomization) and schedules the second expansion, Warmind, for May 8, 2018.

The studio vaguely describes Warmind as sending players "to new places to meet new heroes and battle new enemies" along with the promise of new loot and finding new activities. Well, yeah! Concrete details about the expansion will come out on April 24 during a Twitch stream.

It's worth highlighting that come Season Three, the Crucible maps from Warmind (and Curse of Osiris) will be freely playable in playlists like Quickplay, Competitive, Trials of the Nine, and Iron Banner even if you don't own those expansions. If you do, you'll be able to play those maps in private matches.

Looking further out, Bungie says "The community has been talking a lot about some of the things we're developing for Season Four. Our goals for these features are to give you more control over how you configure your loadouts in Destiny 2 and give you more reasons to play the game over time. We also want to bring back those exciting moments when you acquire the perfect weapon."

I've fallen off Destiny 2 in recent months and I'm honestly not sure what it would take to get me back in and playing on even a weekly basis. Since I never bought the season pass, the start of Season Four in September will probably be my time to return -- anything sooner and I fear I'll quickly burn out.

News:: Shovel Knight hits the motherload with two million copies sold

I'm always happy to share the news when a game I love does well in sales and doubly so when that game is as wonderful and charming as Shovel Knight. As a child of the 90s, mascot platformers are my absolute favorite video game genre. While there are plenty of indie pixel platformers being made today, none of them have taken me back to my youth the same way as Shovel Knight.

Apparently, I'm not alone in this because the game has sold like gangbusters. After clearing one million copies sold 18 months after release, Yacht Club Games announced today it has surpassed two million copies sold. To celebrate, the team is taking 20% off the price of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove across nearly all platforms starting today.

As it did when the game passed its last major milestone, Yacht Club Games has given us a breakdown of sales by platform. Leading the way is Windows, making up 24.4% of the game's sales. That's followed by three Nintendo platforms: 3DS, Switch, and Wii U in that order. In fact, the Switch port of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is the fastest selling version of the game, having moved roughly 370k units since launch.

Congrats to the team and as a fan since day one may I say I can't wait for that amiibo 3-pack I preordered last year to finally come out.

News:: The 300 Week 14: We Need to Talk About Lynne Ramsay

Why hello there, chum, and welcome back to The 300, a recurring feature on my stupid attempt to watch 300 movies in theaters in the year 2018. I’ll be watching new releases, classics, hidden gems, and festival films to experience the wide world of cinema in all its forms. I hope there’s something here for you to enjoy and share as well.

As always, there are three rules for The 300:

  • The movie must be at least 40 minutes long, meeting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ definition of a feature film.
  • I must watch the movie at a movie theater, screening room, or outdoor screening venue.
  • While I can watch movies I’ve seen before 2018, I cannot count repeated viewings of the same film in 2018 multiple times.

Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here opened last week, and I was able to catch all of the Scottish director’s feature films in consecutive days starting with We Need to Talk About Kevin (The 300 Week 13). Seeing multiple movies by a filmmaker in close proximity calls attention to recurring motifs. I noticed a preoccupation with class and its limitations in her first two films, gold name necklaces and makeshift funerals in two movies, the intimacies of bath time and bathing, plenty of water imagery, a knack for depicting unease, and also a skill with carefully deployed needle drops. Ramsay’s such an idiosyncratic auteur with unmatched storytelling technique. I hope she gets to make movies more frequently now that there is additional attention on her work.

This week, I continue watching multiple films by the same filmmaker in close succession, this time the Argentinian director Lucrecia Martel, whose beguiling Zama was my favorite movie I saw in 2017. So long as the retrospective screenings do not sell out, I should be able to see all of her feature films. Keep in mind that An Elephant Sitting Still (the four-hour Chinese art movie I wanted to see last Sunday) sold out two separate screenings, so you never can tell what fortune will bring when it comes to NYC cineastes.

I’m so close to triple digits now I can taste it. This could also be the cinnamon in my oatmeal or the first signs of gingivitis. My goal is to hit the big 100 before the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, which starts next week. As noted before, Jesse Lab and I will be catching many films at the fest, so check back here for our coverage.

And so, onward.

News:: Ghost Recon Wildlands' Splinter Cell DLC is a tribute to the last stealth hero

The stealth action genre used to be fertile grounds. You didn’t have far to look for an experience catering to that very specific niche. Syphon Filter, Tenchu, Thief, Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell, Hitman; these were all games that had very similar premises, but each offered something entirely unique. While a few of these titans were leaders of their specific niche, each game had dedicated fans that were eager to grab hold of something new.

As the years went on, basically all of these franchises have died off. Hitman did have a return to form with the episodic 2016 entry, but even Metal Gear Solid is now basically dead and we haven’t heard a peep about Ubisoft’s tech-savy Splinter Cell since 2013’s Blacklist…that is, until now.

Out of the blue, Ubisoft has released some crossover DLC for its smash hit Ghost Recon Wildlands. While this seems a bit random at first, the two games do feature a similar emphasis on tactics and execution. Falling under the “Tom Clancy” brand, both franchises have striven for realism and offered deliberate experiences for those looking for a more military-centric action game. Upon closer inspection, these two aren’t so far removed.

News:: Steam Spy can no longer operate due to a recent change with Steam

Steam Spy has been a tremendously helpful tool over the years, offering estimates on how individual games are selling and how many people are actively playing them, among other insights. That changes this week in light of a Steam client update centered around new user privacy settings.

The Steam update "gives you more control over the privacy of your Steam account," with newfound options to keep your information private including your profile, friends list, comments, the games you own, what you're actively playing, and your Steam inventory, among other things.

As it now stands, users' libraries are hidden by default. This has huge repercussions for Steam Spy.

In short, it can't continue as is. Players and developers who relied on the tool are out of luck.

Steam Spy will be archived, according to creator Sergey Galyonkin. He also told Eurogamer that while he could potentially use "different methods of gathering information" for the service, "the margin of error would be so high that I don't think they make a lot of sense. [...] It's different for me and for other people. Myself, I usually look at trends. Other people, I see use Steam Spy quite differently, they search particular games. The margin of error for particular games would be kind of bad."

"I knew it was going to happen at some point," Galyonkin said of Steam Spy's shutdown.

News:: New PS4 patch brings HDR and performance optimizations to The Witcher 3

There were some bumps in the road but the HDR patch for The Witcher 3 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro is now live. And while the main feature is high dynamic range, that's not all:

  • Various performance optimizations
  • Stability improvements
  • Localization bugfixing
  • Minor visual improvements

I don't have a television with HDR support (maybe at the end of the year?), but if I did, I'd happily take this patch as an excuse to load up The Witcher 3. Nearly three years later, the game is still giving.

News:: Bloggers Wanted: Villains that did nothing wrong

Villains in all media, not just video games, can end up being a dime a dozen. Far too often, a villain's motives boil down to "I am a bad, and so I do bad things. Fear me." While this format has worked for countless stories, at this point in my life (the ripe old age of 20) I’ve become jaded and grumpy, finding myself rolling my eyes when I see yet another antagonist wreaking havoc with no background or reasoning presented as to why they’re being such a butthole.

What’s far more interesting to me is when a villain’s motives or actions come across as justified, perhaps leaving you rooting for them to defeat the protagonist [insert Elder God Tier villain meme here.]

My favorite example of this would be Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter. While he doesn’t necessarily fit the exact mold I laid out above, he’s easily one of the most dynamic and curious villains I’ve ever come across. For the sake of not spoiling what is perhaps one of the most exciting, action-packed, and tear-inducing arcs in anime history, I won’t delve into the details of what makes Meruem so great. Instead I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen Hunter x Hunter to set aside some time and plow through the series. Really, it’s that good.

News:: GTA Online's Contraband Week brings discounts, races and double dollars

Shady gun-running types will want to get their dodgy dealings underway, as Rockstar have begun a bonus-popping Contraband Week for the insanely popular GTA Online.

During the promotion's run, bunker-made materials will bag players double the amount of GTA dollars and RP through Sell Missions. Not only that, but the shifty merchandise will also be produced in half the amount of time. For those of you yet to begin your underground empire, now is a good time to start, as the game's various bunkers are up to 50% off in price.

The double-dollar bonus has also been applied to all in-game Target Assault Races. Speaking of racing, a new Premium Race has arrived in the form of The Loop, while players who want to test themselves can burn into new Time Trial on the Great Ocean Highway.

As well as all of the above, there is a discount on a range of gear, vehicles and weaponry. Contraband week is live now in GTA Online and is expected to finish around April 16.

News:: Stardew Valley multiplayer should be ready in a month or so

At the risk of setting myself up for slight disappointment when the timing doesn't work out quite as expected, Stardew Valley's long-awaited multiplayer update could be out on PC in around a month.

According to game creator Eric Barone, the team is "still making good progress on fixing bugs" and "if all goes well it should be ready in about a month." Four-person multiplayer will first arrive in Stardew Valley on PC/Mac/Linux, followed by Nintendo Switch and finally Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

We're getting there, friends. I don't care how long this takes -- I'm just happy it's coming.

News:: Steam's revamped privacy features put an end to Steam Spy

Given how much the tech industry is being pressured to protect user privacy, it makes sense that gaming companies would get roped in, too. The pre-eminent platform Steam just overhauled its privacy settings with more detailed descriptions of what information is being shared. Players can now control how the public views their information, like achievements and playtime. But it also made their libraries hidden by default. Unfortunately, this means industry-tracking services like Steam Spy have essentially been locked out of crucial data they need to exist.

News:: What's the one original Xbox game you want to see on Xbox One?

Well, it happened -- Morrowind is coming to the Xbox One by way of backward compatibility. No longer do I need to rely on my fished-out original Xbox to play the console version of the game (as I often do along with Jet Set Radio Future), as I can just boot it up on a modern platform.

Morrowind was a masterpiece that got me through a lot of tough times, and although it's much more dated than a lot of you remember, the level of freedom it provides is unmatched in modern Bethesda games. I could RP to my heart's content in Morrowind, and for hundreds of hours, I did.

So I already got my perfect original Xbox-on-Xbox-One release. Do you have a similar favorite you'd like to share? Even though it's cheating I'll also offer out JSRF, which is a pain to play as it was only released on the original Xbox -- though granted it had two printings one of which was a dual pack with Sega GT 2002.

News:: Nicki Minaj rocking hair buns for upcoming track 'Chun-Li'

Bajillion dollar-making music star Nicki Minaj is set to release a new single (Do you still call them singles?) which references one of gaming's most iconic and strongest women of all time, Street Fighter's irrepressible warrior, Chun-Li.

In a posting on the Hip-Hop princess' official twitter, Minaj revealed the title of the track along with a date: Thursday at 10:00PT/13:00ET. Accompanying the slight message is a great photo of the award-winning artist busting out Chun-Li's trademark hair buns.

Here's hoping that the track is all about Chun-Li's continued dominance as a top-tier character in Third Strike, as well as including sly commentary on the fact you can push forward and tap MP to destroy people with blockstun/throw tics in Super Turbo.

News:: Early Access Review: Radical Heights

I had the opportunity to visit Boss Key Productions' studio in Raleigh, North Carolina, and I saw a lot of promise in LawBreakers. Cliff Blesziski's still fledgling studio has a lot of power behind it, so much so that I was wowed by the raw talent of the art department in particular, among a mix of up and coming and seasoned developers.

But LawBreakers just didn't make an impact on the industry. Maybe it was the marketing, the pricepoint, the over-saturation of hero shooters, the timing, or the spread across three platforms for a brand new IP, but either way it's basically a done deal now.

Looking forward Cliff and his team are anxious to step into yet another popular genre right before the floodgates open -- enter Radical Heights, the '80s themed battle royale.

News:: Check out the patch notes for Nintendo's ARMS 5.3 update here

Nintendo has dropped a new update on its arena-based fighting title ARMS. The new patch is already live and updates the cartoony brawler to Version 5.3.

The main purpose of the new update is to tweak the game's roster for rebalancing purposes, but there have also been some dashboard updates and a selection of new artwork available in the gallery. Korean language support has also been integrated.

Despite Nintendo's comments that made it sound like they were all but abandoning the title. It's good to see that they game is still being maintained, so fans can continue to enjoy its trademark brand of madcap mayhem.

News:: Review: Gal Gun 2

It happened several weeks ago on its Twitter feed
Did PQube Games pose a question for its followers to read.
With Gal*Gun 2 a month away the publisher wanted to know
If you’re a fan who’s brave enough to play the game on the go.
Would you play it on a plane?
Would you play it on a train?
Would you play it with the volume up in a crowd like you got no shame?
Happy to say I’m the type of guy who doesn’t give a shit.
No matter what kind of game it is I’m playing it on my Switch.
So I did play it on a plane,
And I did play it on a train,
And if I could then yes I would play it in Spain with David Wain.
For all its pert, there’s something you should know about this game,
Despite the naughty bits it shows, Gal*Gun 2 is rather tame.

News:: The remake of the original Disgaea is due in July on PS4 and Switch

Disgaea Refine, the remake of the original and still-beloved Disgaea, is coming soon in Japan. By way of Dengeki PlayStation we now know that it's arriving on July 26 in the region on both PS4 and Switch. It'll also sport a limited edition SKU with a soundtrack, special box, and a calendar.

I know that despite how many Disgaea iterations that NIS pumps out, folks still find themselves going back to the original. Although I like just about every entry in its own special way they've been working at re-creating the magic of the original for a while -- and now we're getting a straight remake that'll do just that.

It's hard to settle on a platform, especially since Sony has been its home for so long, but recently Nintendo has been giving them a run for their money.

News:: NIS America President apologises to Sony for recent remarks in SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy interview

Takuro Yamashita, President of NIS America, has issued a statement apologising for his recent remarks in an article with MCV, in which he believes he misrepresented the origins of upcoming fighter SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy.

In the original article, Yamashita spoke about the original plans to make the all-gal fighter a PS4 exclusive, before switching focus to Nintendo Switch for the Western market. In a follow up question, Yamashita commented that Sony "doesn't care about small publishers like us". Below is an excerpt from the interview, which can be read in full in MCV, page 38.

MCV: You are working much closer with Nintendo recently. How did that come about and what benefits have you seen as a company?

Yamashita: “I’ll give you a scoop! Originally we signed with SNK on SNK Heroines just on the PlayStation 4 format. Then last year an opportunity happened at Gamescom, two third-parties happened to meet all together outside Nintendo’s meeting room. The first meeting was between NIS America and Nintendo of Europe, and the next meeting was between SNK and Nintendo of Europe. Of course, these two were separate meetings. Then after their meeting, influential people from SNK came to our booth and said: ‘Hey, Mr. Yamashita, is it possible to cancel our contract on PlayStation 4? Nintendo wants to work on this title on an exclusive basis!’
So these third parties come together and the team at NIS and SNK decided to go with Nintendo for the western market. Physical copy-wise, it’s going to be a Switch exclusive. PlayStation 4-wise, it’s going to be just digital. That’s the deal. We will not release a packaged version for the PlayStation 4 format. Then Nintendo will act as a distributor for this game. Then they promised to buy a lot of units."

MCV: What is your strategy for Europe moving forwards?

Yamashita: “For the JRPG market, the biggest country is France, so most of our key titles, such as Ys VIII and the Disgaea series, we localize the game in French to get in a much better position in Europe, because the French market is the biggest for JRPG titles. We’re starting to do more on Nintendo Switch. SNK Heroines is not the only one. We’ve teamed up with Nintendo Europe for our other Switch titles. They support is in a good way. Compared to that, Sony is not friendly with small publishers likes us. They just care about big Japanese companies.
Also, if we simultaneously release a Switch version and a PlayStation 4 version of the same title, currently the sales trend is two to one. That means the Switch version sells twice as much as the PlayStation 4 version. Physically and digitally. A lot of PlayStation 4 titles are coming up, so the market is very competitive. Compared to that, the Switch market still has lots of room for publishers to make money.”

Since then, Yamashita has released a new statement apologising for comments made during the interview. The apology seems more specifically aimed at his take on how the NIS/Nintendo deal came about, rather than the slightly more obviously incendiary statement about Sony's lack of love for the little guys. The apology reads as follows:

"I must extend my most heartfelt apology to SNK and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The truth is that the Nintendo Switch exclusive plan was originally decided by NIS America, and only later among discussions with influential SNK people did we decide the best option moving forward would be to have as much exposure as possible. This is why that in the end, we are bringing the PS4 version of SNK Heroines to the market, and even supported this version at the NISA Press Event and in the press meetings in February and March.

In discussing matters with MCV, I thought that some insider information would make them interested in the overall conversation, and such lip service did not stand on the side of truth. Once again, I apologize to SNK and Sony if it made them seem negative towards the PS4 platform in any way, and stress that the original goal of a “Nintendo Switch exclusive” version of SNK Heroines came from NISA."

SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy will release on PS4 and Nintendo Switch September 7.

News:: HP's latest Pavilion PCs are built for gamers on a budget

Many conspicuously gaming-oriented PCs are aimed at high-end buyers, the sort who won't flinch at splurging on top-end parts and extravagant RGB lighting. But that's not really how the gaming market works -- there are many, many people only ask for just enough performance to run their favorite games at a decent clip. And HP is most definitely aware of this. It's refreshing its Pavilion PC lineup for the spring, and the focus this time is on a new Pavilion Gaming line that offers some of the trappings of gaming PCs without venturing into the higher prices of the Omen and Omen X lineups.

News:: 'Eve: War of Ascension' reimagines the venerable space MMO for mobile

Complex space sim Eve Online will be 15 years old this year, surviving in a less MMO-friendly market with various spin-offs like Dust 514 and Valkyrie, as well as a free-to-play version. News:: It sure looks like Ikaruga is coming to Switch

Whenever I see Treasure still being talked about, my eyes light up.

Most of their classics are still relevant and played today, but the more platforms we can play them on, the merrier. Based on this complete tease of a tweet, we might be getting that chance with Ikaruga on Switch. Officially tweeted out by Treasure, it sure looks like the company is using a Joy-Con grip and a Pro Controller to play Ikaruga on the platform. They're currently trying to get the vertical bit right, and presumably once they figure that out, they could announce the port in the future.

Naturally this could open up the door to plenty of other Treasure games on modern platforms in the future, like Bangai-O and possibly the pair of Sin & Punishment games. As far as we know Ikaruga is also coming to PS4.
