News:: Kilgore is the latest fighter coming to Killer Instinct

Killer Instinct hasn't finalized its cast yet. Come January, we'll have another combatant to contend with, and this one has a thing or two in common with series poster boy Fulgore. His name? Kilgore.

Iron Galaxy has a sizable update out now for the game, as detailed in this lovely overview video and in the extensive patch notes found here. Aside from balance tweaks for much of the Killer Instinct lineup, there are more character skins, new features for the Shadow Lords mode, and some noteworthy system changes: "Breaking a combo now restores 50% of your potential damage (was 100%)," and "Passive potential damage regeneration now begins after 3 seconds (was 1 second)."

It's unclear when precisely Kilgore will make his playable debut, but you'll be able to go up against him beforehand. You can see more of Edward Minigunhands in this match with Kim Wu.

News:: Dark Horse is publishing the Splatoon art book over here

It's been a bit of a wait, but that 320-page art book for Splatoon is coming stateside.

Dark Horse is publishing the hardcover release of The Art of Splatoon in North America on June 13, 2017, and pre-orders for the book are open now at Amazon ($40) and Amazon.ca ($54).

Despite not being localized yet, I've heard this book come up in conversation a few times now, and everyone who imported it generally had good if not great things to say. I love the inky world of Splatoon, and I'd be interested to dig in even further, beyond what Nintendo was able to put into the game.

News:: Crytek is closing studios and slow-paying employees again

Crytek, the developer behind the technically impressive CryEngine toolset, and most recently Robinson: The Journey, is laying off employees and closing studios. Workers' paychecks have reportedly been extremely slow to arrive as well. No, you aren't imagining things -- the company faced similar circumstances a few years ago. But the bloodletting appears much worse this time out: All of the company's studios will be shuttered but two.

News:: Trails of Cold Steel III will be exclusive to PS4

The past decade has seen a number of Nihon Falcom games finally localized to the west, including multiple entries from the Ys and Legend of Heroes series. Next to Shining, Legend of Heroes is perhaps the largest RPG series that I have virtually no experience with. I recently added Trails in the Sky along with the first two Trails of Cold Steel games to the super-massive black hole that is my backlog, but suddenly Nihon Falcom announced a third one last year. I need to invest in a hyperbolic time chamber.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III will be releasing in Japan in the fall of 2017, but exclusive to PlayStation 4. The previous two games were only on PS3 and Vita, so this announcement may be a disappointment to Vita owners. Esterior.net claims Nihon Falcom President Toshihiro Kondo stated in a Q&A that the reason for the PS4 exclusivity was to "ensure that the game will sell internationally, rather than just domestically," but I have yet to find anything that verifies this claim.

News:: Nintendo is sending some holiday goodies to Animal Crossing players

Animal Crossing: New Leaf recently got a free update after being available for three years (four in Japan). While that is unprecedented in modern gaming, Nintendo isn't content to simply push that out and be done. To celebrate the holidays, Nintendo will be giving out a festive white tree along with 15 MEOW coupons via SpotPass.

While I couldn't find any confirmation on whether or not this required the new update, seeing as how that is free, there isn't much reason to pass on it. I know some people might have issues with their SD Cards being full, but I'd definitely clear off some unused stuff to make way for such an engaging addition. Animal Crossing is fine enough on its own, but anything extra just sweetens the deal.

News:: The PlayStation Network holiday sale has fresh deals

We're now in the third week of Sony's month-long PlayStation Network holiday sale, and I had to break away from using a thematically-appropriate header image in favor of a crystal-clear message. Bloodborne is $10 (or only $8 if you have PlayStation Plus), and that's worth impulsively jumping on.

You'll also find familiar discounts on games like Star Wars Battlefront and its expansions, Hitman, and Grand Theft Auto V. This time, PS Vita owners have a reason to check the list, too. Look out for deals on Mind Zero, Psycho-Pass, Severed, Muramasa Rebirth, Risk of Rain, and Stranger of Sword City.

News:: First annual Steam awards nominees have been finalized

Y'know what, guys? Turns out Steam is pretty popular. Over 15 million people participated in nominating games for the Steam awards this year. That's pretty good for a set of awards that didn't exist and no one knew about a few weeks ago.

Voting for the awards will begin on December 22, with one category being voted on per day all the way up to December 30. It's a safe bet that the winners of each category will get some kind of discount in the Steam store. It's a little strange that the nominees don't need to be from the current year, but I guess it's Valve's party and Valve's rules. The list of categories and nominees are as follows:

The “Villain Most In Need Of A Hug” Award (December 22)

  • Borderlands 2
  • Dead by Daylight
  • Far Cry 3
  • Far Cry 4
  • Portal 2

Some people just need a hug.

The “I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award” Award (December 23)

  • Euro Truck Simulator 2
  • Paladins
  • Starbound
  • Stardew Valley
  • Unturned

This title didn’t have a huge marketing machine behind it, but you found it and loved it. Then you told your friends about it. And they loved it. And now that little game that could is about to win an award… but always remember: you totally found it first.

The “Test of Time" Award (December 24)

  • Age of Empires II HD
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • Sid Meier’s Civilization V
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Terraria

This award is for the game that is just as good today as the day you first played it. Newer games may come out, but it doesn’t matter… you’ll always come back to play this one.

The “Just 5 More Minutes” Award (December 25)

  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
  • Rocket League
  • Sid Meier’s Civilization VI
  • Fallout 4
  • Terraria

You have an early day tomorrow. You need to get some sleep, so you’re just going finish one more thing before you decide to tuck in for the night. Just one more. Wait, one more. What’s that you say? It’s 2:30 AM? This award is for the game that keeps you playing late.

The “Whoooaaaaaaa, dude!” Award (December 26)

  • Bioshock Infinite
  • DOOM
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Some games melt your face. Maybe it was a crazy plot twist. Maybe you just got your wisdom teeth removed. Either way, this game BLOWS YOUR MIND.

The “Game Within A Game Award” Award (December 27)

  • Garry’s Mod
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • The Stanley Parable
  • Tabletop Simulator
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Kinder Eggs. Peanut Butter Cups. Jelly Donuts. All great things stuffed with other great things. Like a mighty turducken, this award celebrates the best mini game hidden within another game.

The “I’m Not Crying, There’s Something In My Eye” Award (December 28)

  • Life Is Strange
  • To the Moon
  • This War of Mine
  • Undertale
  • The Walking Dead

Games are fun. But sometimes games become more than that, and touch you in a way you weren’t expecting. This award celebrates the game that blindsided you emotionally. You weren’t expecting to cry. It wasn’t in the plan. But it happened nonetheless.

The “Best Use Of A Farm Animal” Award (December 29)

  • ARK: Survival Evolved
  • Blood and Bacon
  • Farming Simulator 17
  • Goat Simulator
  • Stardew Valley

Animals are rad and almost any game is better for including them. This game used a farm animal in the best way possible.

On December 30, the rules change a bit. There will be four categories simultaneously, and voters will be able to choose one game from each category.

The “Boom Boom” Award

  • BroForce
  • DOOM
  • Just Cause 3
  • Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
  • Kerbal Space Program

Let’s face it: explosions are pretty great. In a blockbuster movie they’re thrilling. In a celebration with fireworks they’re beautiful. And when they’re behind a cop putting on sunglasses they’re nothing short of glorious. These games understand the fine art of detonation.

The “Love/Hate Relationship” Award

  • Dark Souls III
  • Darkest Dungeon
  • Dota 2
  • Geometry Dash
  • Super Meat Boy

Games are just supposed to be fun!”… oh sweet summer child, your naivety is adorable. Games can be more than fun. They can be challenges that demand perfection. These games are punishing gauntlets that make you question your very skill… a crucible that will push you either to greatness or a breaking point. You will wake up family members as you scream. Words will come out of your mouth that would make your mom blush. Your chill friends will ask you, “Why do you play something that stresses you out?”… and you will stare at them with steely eyes and reply, “Because I love it.”

The “Sit Back and Relax” Award

  • ABZU
  • Cities Skylines
  • Euro Truck Simulator 2
  • Mini Metro
  • Viridi

Did you read the description for the “Love/Hate Relationship” Award? This is the opposite.

The “Better With Friends” Award

  • Don’t Starve Together
  • Gang Beasts
  • Golf With Your Friends
  • Left 4 Dead 2
  • Magicka

There are some games out there that just aren’t the same when you play by yourself. Maybe you need to have a friend to watch your back. Maybe you need to have a friend that you can stab in the back. Either way, mirth is awaiting those that gather friends to play these games.

Every day at 10 AM Pacific time, a new category will be available for voting. Winners will be announced on December 31. Maybe I'm just a cynical jerkface, but this just seems like a slightly different format for the annual Steam winter sale. Still, it's nice to know what's going to be on sale ahead of time for a change.

News:: Budget shopping in an anime store

[Kerrik52 took an awesome adventure to an anime store, and we're going to take a look at what all he found! I love anime, YOU love anime, let's weeb this joint up a little! ~ Stephen]

You know what's great? Anime.

Adventure, comedy, bishie boys, and tits on legs, what else could you want? But you know what isn't great? Living in a country with such a low population density that it isn't economically viable to sustain an anime hobby store.

I've come accept this reality, but I was recently able to go to one of these fabled places. The Animate store at the MBK center in Bangkok, to be precise. Armed with a hopeful heart and 1200 Baht (about 34 USD or 32 Euro), I ventured inside in order to purchase whatever cheap things caught my eye. This is my story:

News:: Review: Super Mario Run

Two years ago, if you had told me Nintendo was making a Mario runner for mobile, I would have laughed directly into your face. Not just any laugh, but a big, boisterous laugh usually reserved for moments of schadenfreude and Tyler Perry movies. "There's no way they would do that," I would have argued as I tried to catch my breath from all the laughing and knee slapping.

But here we are in 2016 and I'm not laughing anymore. I just spent the past few days playing a game I thought Nintendo would never create: a mediocre Mario platformer. Oh, it's also on the iPhone.

News:: Review: Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun

Thinking about stealth, a common image the mind conjures is that of a lone wolf slinking through the shadows and taking out threats one by one. Solid Snake and Sam Fisher generally work alone. Players control one man using skill and cunning to take on an army.

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun zooms out a bit. It follows a group of five warriors, each with his or her own strengths and weaknesses. Instead of stealth by way of action or a shooter, Shadow Tactics approaches it through a more real-time strategy lens. More accurately, it's real-time tactics. I mean, it's right there in the title.

Oh, and it's excellent. There's that too.

News:: The third Yo-Kai Watch movie beat out Star Wars at the Japanese box office

Yo-Kai Watch may have lost some steam in that it had a roughly 43% dropoff from the last film, but it still sold gangbusters at the box office over in Japan. Crunchyroll is reporting that the third Yo-Kai film sold roughly 608,033,100 yen worth of tickets ($5.189 million USD) over its weekend debut, beating out the opening of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in that region. While Rogue One made more revenue due to more expensive admission fees, Japanese box office ranks are determined by tickets sold, which Yo-Kai won out with.

For reference, the second Yo-Kai Watch film (which also beat The Force Awakens last year in Japan) would eventually go on to make $47 million USD, which handily beats out the revenue of the last Pokemon film that ended up settling on $20 million. The series is still a big money maker over in Japan in theaters, but here, we ended up getting the first movie on TV for free just for the extra publicity.

While the jury is out on whether or not Level-5 can still push people in the west into liking something so intrinsically Japanese, I'm just enjoying the ride.

News:: Destructoid's award for Best Wii U Game of 2016 goes to...

It was a regrettably light year for Wii U releases, but that's not to say it was uneventful.

This was the year that gave us an Atlus-developed, idol-centric JRPG that not only brought the storied Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem franchises together under one roof, but did so successfully.

It was a feat worth commending with top honors, I felt, and my fellow Destructoid staffers tended to agree. That's why we named Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE our favorite Wii U game of 2016.

In the words of Chris, "this is a very Japanese game." And thank goodness for that!

News:: Tracer's lesbianism turns my Overwatch fan fiction into reality

It's the holidays, a time for family, friends, presents, Santa, credit card debt, arguing when people say something other than "Merry Christmas" to you for some goddamn reason, and for being with the ones you love. For me, that means being with the body pillow I won't tell my parents is my fiancé. For the booty-tastic Tracer of Overwatch, that means being at home with the woman in her life.

Yes, it appears Tracer has a girlfriend and in 2016, some people still consider this news (or at least, people who write for obnoxious entertainment websites still considers this news). In a yuletide-themed issue of the Overwatch digital comic, Tracer hunts down a gift for Winston, but it's mistakenly opened by the freckled, red-headed Emily. Oh, holiday antics!

News:: Seasons of Heaven looks pretty, but could use some work

The only known third-party exclusive for Nintendo Switch at this time is Seasons of Heaven, an indie game based on the book of the same name about a boy with Asperger's named Yann and his bulldog Ani. The first full trailer shows vibrant and mysterious landscapes at first (including stacked rocks; I just had to Google why the hell people do that), but you may be surprised when the calm and happy-go-lucky adventure meets samurai ghosts and giant black monstrosities.

I have not read the book, though I can imagine the large black monster is some sort of visual metaphor for Yann's real-world issues like in Papo & Yo, or some message on society. What samurai ghosts represent are anyone's guess, however. Maybe little Yann has a strong interest in Japanese culture, considering we also see a Japanese-style house in the trailer.

Unfortunately the animations seem sub-standard and the environments don't always look great, but I suppose its forgivable for an indie game still in development. I still can't really tell what the core gameplay will be beyond its story focus. All in all, I'm a little less optimistic after this trailer. It just feels a little bland, but I will wait to see more.

Yet to be confirmed is whether the game will follow the story of the book beat-for-beat or have its own direction. Part of the book's description on Amazon reads "This story will allow you to experience the awe of discovering the most beautiful, magical place that ever existed while at the same time staying only one step ahead of the dark and vile underbelly of the human race."

News:: A full playthrough of a Friday the 13th match has moments of tension and dullness

Friday the 13th: The Game was supposed to be released roughly a month ago, but was pushed back into 2017 -- not only that, but the multiplayer component will come out separately from the campaign in early 2017, with the latter arriving in the summer. And while you wait, IGN has a 17-minute look at the project, which includes a full match from the perspective of the counselors, with developer commentary.

As expected, how much fun you have really is dependent on your group. When the match starts people are kind of just waiting around for Jason to appear (though they do call the cops and barricade a cabin before leaving it), but around 5:30 things start to get exciting. Jason rolls in, kills a player in a big group, and people either start to attack him or run in panic. Whenever Jason is around, the game looks like a combination of survival horror and stealth, with people hiding underneath furniture and such in terror of this buffed-up boss. But even then combat looks a little stilted (particularly the animations), and it looks like running away is much more fun than staying and fighting. Playing as Jason must be hella fun (as it would in Alien Isolation with the Alien if that mode existed).

Either way it looks like they nailed the atmosphere, sound effects, and score (I really like the use of music to indicate Jason's presence). I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who's jazzed to give it a go when it's released sometime in 2017.

News:: Destructoid's award for Best Xbox One Game of 2016 goes to...

There's nothing quite like Dark Souls. It's a series that intrigues and ensnares, temping its players to persevere against harsh odds to see the next captivating set design or beautifully vile boss.

At times, these games teeter over the edge of despair. They can be too demanding or esoteric for some players, pushing them away for good. But for the folks who are able to dig in -- I mean really dig in -- they're near impossible to put down until those credits roll. Dark Souls III was, once again, exactly that.

Some of you even sought out the international version, in spite of known issues, just because it meant you could marathon the adventure slightly ahead of schedule. I get it. Once I tore into Dark Souls III, few things were on my mind for a week straight other than food, sleep, work, and bonfires. I couldn't explore Lothric soon enough. And despite making the trek half a dozen times by now, I still find myself returning -- to help one more summoner best the Nameless King. To convince one more player I truly am a good-natured Mound Maker who won't betray them. To gaze onto the Boreal Valley one last time.

This may be our last Souls, at least for a while, but its essence lives on. There's a yearning for From Software to continue remixing this type of experience, swapping in new stories, settings, and characters. If Dark Souls III really is the end for now, we're happy knowing it left off on a high note.

News:: Hitman: The Full Experience for PC drops to $15 at GameStop

GameStop has loaded up on some PC download deals today with aggressive pricing on several triple-A titles. While Steam's sale won't start up until this Thursday, we think the prices below are what you should expect (given these are discounts approved by publishers).

Note that this isn't an official "Winter Sale" just yet at GameStop and the deals below have randomly cropped up since yesterday. The most noteworthy of the bunch though is a big 75% off price cut to $15 for Hitman: The Full Experience. Launched in an episodic format, the latest in the Hitman series is now so cheap that we're wondering if this is a price mistake. For reference, it was only 50% off during Steam's recent Autumn sale just a few weeks ago.

Two other goodies we think you should pick up are Wolfenstein: The New Order for $6.59 and The Last Remnant for only $2.49. All deals below are Steam keys and are sent immediately after purchase.

News:: Only in Japan: Destroy Tokyo as giant robot school girl in VR

It's odd that I was just recently watching videos of Demolition Girl, a PS2 game where you must fight to take down a giant supermodel who's reeking havoc on Japan. I thought such games would never be made today, but then I remembered Japan is in this weird time limbo where they still use fax machines and make giant girl games. This time, you will play as the girl in the fabulously named A.I am Monster, releasing in Japan in 2017. But not just any girl; a giant, robot school girl.

The magic genies who will grant your wish to become the little (giant) girl are Cave, known for making a bunch of anime bullet hell games not named Touhou. The girl featured in A.I am Monster appears to be from their most popular series, Donpachi. More specifically, she looks like the cover girl of DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu.

While it's fun to point and laugh at the ridiculousness of it, let's be real folks: this game looks like trash. The frame-rate turns into a slideshow even in their announcement trailer, and there doesn't appear to be much depth to the game at all beyond punching buildings. That is probably why they put a boy in a girls school girl uniform in the bottom corner to distract us.

While unlikely to come with the game (though don't be surprised if it does), it appears wearing a school girls uniform is the only true way to play this game. Whoever ends up reviewing this game will certainly have to record themselves just as this guy has in order to prove they played properly. One-two-three not-it!

News:: Microsoft is starting off the new year with some awesome Games with Gold titles

Despite not owning an Xbox One, I've been consistently tempted to make the plunge with all of the Games with Gold titles Microsoft has given out. Even the less exciting months have had at least one strong title, but January is just loaded with good stuff. Killer Instinct Season 2 Ultra Edition is the obvious standout, but having Rayman Origins available is damn awesome (especially with Legends just being added to backward compatibility).

Along with that, you'll be able to grab The Cave, a Ron Gilbert-directed puzzle platformer, and Deathtrap, an action RPG set in the world of Van Helsing. Deathtrap will be available for the entirety of January while the other titles have limited windows. The Cave will be on offer from January first until the 16th with Killer Instinct and Rayman Origins filling in from the 16th until the 30th.

News:: A 30 second trailer for the Gravity Rush anime is all I need

I must have watched the below teaser around 10 times now. I mean, it's not even 30 seconds (it's more like 20), but it shows so much. Mostly centering around Kat and Raven, the Gravity Rush anime will bridge the gap between the first and second games. The Overture episode will be included in first-print runs of the upcoming PS4 edition, but my guess is you can probably catch it on YouTube or a streaming service at some point.

As a reminder, a free standalone DLC is also coming in March featuring Raven. I can't believe that it's nearly here! It feels like forever since I bought the original on Vita at launch and played it into the night. Gravity Rush 2 will arrive in the US on January 20.

News:: Yikes, the Assassin's Creed movie is getting bad reviews

If you thought the ingredient missing from video game adaptations was pedigree, this year is offering another suggestion: making a movie from a video game is stupid. Warcraft acquired an ace director in Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and sucked anyways. Ubisoft spared us an Assassin's Creed game this year, offered a film instead, stuffed it with Serious Movie Stars like Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, and, surprise!, it still fucking sucked.

That's because it's a movie based off of the insanely stupid video game franchise Assassin's Creed.

With 28 reviews in at time of writing, Assassin's Creed's Rotten Tomatoes score is at 18% positive, or just above what Pixels ended up with (16%) after flirting with a 0% around its opening. The Assassin's Creed Metacritic aggregate is 37. While it probably won't hit the lows of absolute trash like Hitman: Agent 47 (8% positive), a movie so bad they didn't even manage to shave Agent 47's head all the way bald, it's kind of more embarrassing to suck this hard with Fassbender and a god damn $130 million budget whereas Agent 47 starred a guy so embarrassed he was credited using a fake name ("Rupert Friend"?!).

Then again, as with Warcraft, which cost $160 million but raked in over $430 million at box office (mostly internationally), there's really only one metric of success anyone involved in an Assassin's Creed movie cares about. Let's see if they make their money.

News:: Switch port being considered for Republique

Republique was a nice little indie stealth romp, created by several of the folks who worked on the Metal Gear Solid franchise. It had its share of highs and lows (an especially low point was it's insane wait between episodes), but if you can get the complete edition on the cheap, it's worth a spin over a rainy weekend.

Its journey isn't over yet, either, as the Kickstarter page (created in 2013) is still trucking, and as of this week, asked fans if they would want a potential Switch port. According to folks who have seen the backer-only post, it isn't a promise of any kind, but more of a way to gauge interest. If anything was added to it, I'd probably check it out -- but as it stands, the more third-party games on the Switch, the merrier.
