News:: Vs. Super Mario Bros. will be hitting the Japanese eShop soon

It's been awhile since we've heard about Nintendo's efforts to port the arcade iterations of its classics to the Switch, but we seem to be getting a second entry before the end of the year. Heading to the Japanese eShop on December 22, Vs. Super Mario Bros. will join the Switch line-up of games that make you wish Virtual Console was ready.

I've actually seen a cabinet in person before. One of the McDonald's a few towns over had one in the late '90s and I couldn't keep myself away. I occasionally go back and hope the machine is still there, but it seems the owners sold it off shortly after the turn of the millennium.

News:: Pearl and Marina to perform 'Live' at Japanese Splatoon tournament

Splatoon 2's hosts, Pearl and Marina, have announced that they are to play a live concert in Japan, as their avant-garde collective; Off the Hook. The duo will take to the stage to perform all their latest (s)hits and I need to start saving up for a flight to Japan. Pronto.

Queen of the World Pearl, and her tag-along friend, will perform a live set at NicoNico Tokaigi to close out the Splatoon competition. You can expect all their Rap-Dance classics, from the crowd-pleasing "Ebb and Flow" to the more emotionally-evocative "Muck Warfare".

This gig follows in the footsteps of Squid-Sisters, Callie and Marie, who also performed several concerts when they were Splatoon's hosts. This was achieved through the power of projected imagery. Of course, Pearl and Marina are actual, real people, so I'm assuming no such technology will be necessary.

Off the Hook will be appearing at Makuhari Messe on February 17, 2018. It promises to be the greatest musical happening since that episode of Saved By The Bell where Zack and Slater formed a band.

News:: Photos of a portable Nintendo 64 prototype from Hyperkin posted online

Before anyone gets too excited, this is simply just a prototype, with no word yet on it actually entering production anytime soon. For those unaware, Hyperkin are the same people behind devices such as the RetroN series of emulation-based retro consoles (and all the drama behind them) and other portable retro systems such as the "SupaBoy S Portable Pocket Console."

As for the photos themselves, they come from Senior Account Manager Ramon Navos-Moral -- who despite working for Hyperkin and should probably know better -- decided to share these photos on Facebook.

News:: Finding Paradise gets a launch trailer and release date

To The Moon told a wonderful tale of hope, love and regret and for years now, a sequel has been teased and talked about. The wait will soon be over as Finding Paradise will be heading to Steam (with GOG and Humble soon to follow) this Thursday, December 14. It will be available for PC, Mac and Linux, though no price has been listed.

While we wait the next few days, why not take a gander at the launch trailer? The game still retains that wonderful SNES sprite look and seems to have a deeply powerful score that is sure to be a tear jerker. I know I'm ready to cry about my unfulfilled life again.

News:: Review: Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ignis

So far, Final Fantasy XV has had a mix of mediocre to positive updates. Nothing has been outright bad, and the myriad free quality-of-life updates are appreciated, but the individual story campaigns have been lacking. Gladio and Prompto are fine characters in their own right, but they didn't really get much of a chance to shine with forced, threadbare gaidens to their name.

Ignis wants to change all that with a mini-adventure that's more rooted in the core narrative.

News:: Single-player in Metal Gear Survive actually looks neat

Color me surprised, but this latest trailer for Metal Gear Survive actually looks neat. Instead of just making a carbon copy of Phantom Pain and throwing zombies in, Survive leans more into its title and has you scavenging for food and weapons to prepare yourself for zombies. I won't deny that the enemy design looks lame as hell, but I could see Survive being a solid enough time.

As for single-player gameplay, there looks to be a strong influence from tower defense games going on. I'm a sucker for anything that lets me actually customize my base and Survive certainly has that. Hopefully all of the microtransaction nonsense from Phantom Pain isn't included, because it would be in poor taste to limit stronger defenses to people with big wallets.

News:: Predator's here to kill all the Ghost Recon Wildlands players

Predator is a movie worth watching 30 times in two months. It's an all-world physique lineup -- Weathers and Jesse "The Body" Ventura and probably Arnold too. It's important to pack on mass. Much better than, say, Transporter 2.

Ghost Recon Wildlands just packed on mass, so to speak. Ubisoft confirmed what we had already suspected: Predator is coming to terrorize the jungles of Wildlands. Starting tomorrow, players are challenged to kill the Predator in a special free hunt event that runs through early January.

Those who manage to fell the Predator will earn exclusive in-game items, such as a Predator mask that features thermal vision. More importantly, they'll earn their continued existence. Predator hunts for honor and for sport; you hunt for survival.

News:: Nominees for Destructoid's Best VR Game of 2017

I won't claim to know what the future holds for virtual reality as a whole, but the cost of entry is becoming less of an obstacle, companies like Oculus, Valve, and Sony are still pushing forward, and every day more people are finding out just how transformative this tech can be in the right hands.

What I can say is this: 2017 gave us some of the best VR games to date.

Personally speaking, this year brought one of the most awe-inspiring gaming experiences of my adult life. I'll readily admit that Resident Evil 7 left room for improvement and refinement in a future installment, but even with its flaws, the game was revelatory in VR. During those first few weeks after launch, it almost ruined traditional video games for me; they just didn't feel the same any more.

It's been 30 years since Arnold Schwarzenegger's Dutch headed into the jungles of Central America, only to find himself hunted by a stealth alien warrior nicknamed the Predator. Now players of Ghost Recon Wildlands, Ubisoft's open-world tactical shooter, will fall under the watchful eye of the Predator in an all new special event running from December 14th through early January.

News:: Action-RPG Titan Quest headed to Switch, PS4, and Xbox One next year

THQ Nordic continues to bring back older properties in interesting ways and today it's announcing console ports for the action-RPG Titan Quest. On Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the company is targeting a March 20, 2018 launch. On Nintendo Switch, well, it'll be done "when it is done."

It's not exactly Diablo on Switch, of course, but this is a genuinely good get for the system.

The console versions of Titan Quest will cost $30 (there's also a pricier collector's edition with a nine-inch replica "Greek war helmet" and other trinkets), and while they don't appear to include the more recent Ragnarök expansion, they will pack in the 2007 expansion Immortal Throne.

I never went back to try last year's Anniversary Edition refresh, but that looked like a doozy.

News:: Pinball FX3 out now on Switch, two new tables free on all formats

Pinball FX turns ten years old this week. To celebrate, developers Zen Studios has a double announcement. First up, the simulator's latest iteration, Pinball FX3, is now available on Nintendo Switch. Also, all formats will receive two new tables free; Adventure Land and Son of Zeus.

Adventure Land
takes you on a trip to the carnivals of your dad's Good Old Days, featuring a design based on classic rides and sideshow attractions. Though Zen have intended Adventure Land to be a more stripped-down "classic pinball" affair, it's still amusingly optimistic in its layout and design.

The Son of Zeus table features a first for Pinball FX, variable weather conditions, as Hercules takes down mythological creatures and legendary monsters, such as the Hydra and Medusa, in a quest to get to the top of Mount Olympus and prove himself the big boy on the block.

Both tables can be downloaded on all formats gratis, provided you grab them before December 19. As a card-carrying pinball player/owner, I've been a fan of Pinball FX for a decade, and hope they will continue to produce their brilliant, imaginative, physics-defying designs for years to come, even if some of them do feature some of the most unintentionally hilarious celebrity impersonations ever performed.

News:: Monster Hunter: World's beta was a total blast

Monster Hunter has always been a wildly successful series in Japan, but it has struggled to get a foothold in the West. Despite every major entry being localized (excluding Monster Hunter XX), the games have just not resonated with a majority of gamers.

In the first reveal trailer for Monster Hunter: World, Capcom seemingly westernized the art style and simplified some of the more obtuse elements of the game to appeal to a wider audience. This had longtime fans wary of World’s final product. After playing roughly five hours of this weekend’s beta, I can safely say that no one had anything to worry about as Monster Hunter: World is still Monster Hunter, for better or worse.

News:: Today's Star Wars Battlefront II update brings The Last Jedi content and balance changes

Star Wars Battlefront II still has overarching issues, and player progression is still way too slow for my liking, but today's update does help tighten up the game. There's a batch of Star Wars: The Last Jedi content -- Finn and Phasma as hero/villain characters, the Crait and D'Qar maps, Tallie Lintra's RZ-2 A-wing, and three new single-player chapters -- as well as balancing and quality-of-life changes.

I've been logging in every day for all the free crates in an effort to save up for these two heroes but, as it turns out, Finn and Captain Phasma don't cost any credits to access. They're free right now. That said, Tallie's hero ship does cost 5,000 credits to unlock.

Looking over the patch notes, I'm seeing some sorely-needed tweaks. Besides lots of character-specific balance adjustments, DICE has unlocked the second and third Star Card slots for the four Trooper classes and players "will receive three Common Star Cards per Trooper Class to fill out their hand."

So, as it now stands, you won't have to spend credits on cards or upgrades you don't want just to level up those classes to unlock their extra ability/boost slots. This absolutely needed to happen. Also necessary: the end-of-round multiplayer screen now displays what the next map will be.

[Update: The Net Neutrality vote is tomorrow, barring no further delays. If you love the web as it is, please look up who represents you and tell them there will be sysop nerd violence]

Another year, another group of dangerous idiots trying to mess up the Internet. This year, it's back with fake consumer outrage! We have 3 weeks to set this right again - please join the http://ift.tt/1kpJiCj. I'm bumping my semi-annual outrage post.

Net Neutrality is a fancy word that muffles what's really going on: Cable Operators want to charge consumers more money to access the open Internet. Nobody is spending that much money to lobby congress because they want to improve your internet service. It is a straight-up lie to your face.

Imagine your Internet coming in "packages" that limit your access to Facebook and YouTube unless you pony up more. It sets up a dangerous stage for small businesses to lose the ability to come in and build better services that compete with those sites.

Our own government is complacent with this shit: The FCC wants to destroy net neutrality and give big cable companies control over what we see and do online. If they get their way, they’ll allow widespread throttling, blocking, censorship, and extra fees. As a site operator, I care because it puts Destructoid in grave danger if I have to ask people to pay a newsstand price for access (and that money wouldn't even reach the editorial team, the ISP might want a cut). The whole thing is horrible for every small site you love, and makes it much harder for newer competitors to come in.

I forgot to mention - they want to tax people at both ends of the pipe.  Even if you pay for the fastest internet possible if that website doesn't pay for "the fast lane" your connection to them can suffer.  You can see why they're in love with this idea.

We're going to continue to hear about this year after year because it represents a huge amount of new revenue for cable and internet companies if they force this thing up our asses. Don't let them get away with it!

It takes like two minutes to sign this petition, please get involved!

You want to really improve my Internet, telcom companies? How about run some fiber to our doorsteps or GTFO. I'd gladly pay double for ludicrous speed but it's not even an option.

Looking for a sweet free gift for the upcoming holiday season? Of course you are, ya cheap bastard! Give Mr. Destructoid a chance to stuff your stocking with a Steam copy of Genetic Disaster, celebrating its full release out of Early Access this Friday, December 15.

Team8 Studio's twin-stick [un]cooperative shooter pits you and up to four friends against hordes of unfortunate scientific experiments, giving you the opportunity to lay waste to both friend and foe alike using the game's myriad weapons and environmental traps. Also it's cartoony and cute and a little grotesque as a result, which is something that unfortunately isn't on any of the press releases. They should hire me for that kind of stuff.

News:: Nominees for Destructoid's Best Portable Game of 2017

Portable gaming had a very strong year this year. In the face of intense competition from other handheld devices, the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita held its own with a strong selection of exclusive software.

We had anime mysteries, subterranean exploration, fantasy adventures, sci-fi action and a double dose of pocket monsters. While most home consoles attempt to reinvent the wheel with each new generation, handheld gaming remains steadfastly attached to simply delivering quality, fun experiences. Equally viable on a five-minute toilet break or a two-hour commute.

With the ever-burgeoning mobile market raking in the bucks, and the success of hybrid-console, Nintendo Switch, 2018 may be a the tough year for dedicated gaming handhelds. But, as long as they keep pumping out gems like the seven titles listed below, there's still a lotta life in the little guys.

News:: There's a Metal Gear Survive console beta next month

Hideo Kojima isn't involved with Metal Gear Survive, and that has people skeptical as hell about whether it'll be any good at all. That's the narrative around this game: Can Metal Gear survive now that it's sans Kojima, or will Metal Gear Survive resemble the spiritless zombies that inhabit its story campaign?

Time's ticking down to its release, as February 20 isn't far away. There's an earlier opportunity to play Metal Gear Survive, though. Konami's holding an open beta January 18-21 so that people can test its cooperative horde mode. Participating in the beta grants players "an in-game bonus" for those who purchase the full game.

Not everyone has the opportunity to go hands-on, though. Konami's restricting this beta to consoles. Only PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players get a shot. The PC crowd is shut out, left to wonder for another month if this is something they might like.

For what it's worth, we tried this part of Metal Gear Survive at E3 this year. We weren't exactly enthused with what we saw. Steven called it "lifeless" and likened it to [if] someone ran The Phantom Pain through the clunky, grind-heavy Let it Die." But hey, different strokes and all that. Maybe you'll like what you see.

News:: Here's a tip for clearing the slow as molasses Mercury Flashpoint in Destiny 2

This week, Destiny 2's "Flashpoint" exercise is on Mercury. For the uninitiated, this is an easy weekly mission that each character can complete through public events that grants one piece of "Powerful Gear," one of the best ways to level up beyond your current power level in Destiny 2.

It should be good news that a Flashpoint is in a new location for once, but Mercury is a disappointing, tiny wasteland that came with the DLC. It's so tiny in fact that it only houses one public event, which pops up sparingly.

Thankfully you can alleviate some of the waiting game with a simple tip -- kill all the yellow-bar enemies you can find.

Zone into Mercury, and go tap the public event flag if it's up to keep track of it. Then roam around the circle, looking for yellow enemies (sometimes they have slightly different models, sometimes they're just base looking ones), killing them as you see them. It's not obvious but it grants you roughly 4% of the requirements for your Flashpoint. The bulk of them congregate near the back of the map, close to the Infinite Forest gateway.

Roughly 4%. Given that Mercury will slide in and out of the weekly cycle, it's a good thing to know!

The perspective-shifting platformer Fez is making the rounds once more with another port. The latest version, Fez Pocket Edition, released earlier today on iPhone and iPad for $4.99.

News:: Overwatch League's pre-season is over, the real thing starts on January 10

Although pre-season games in physical sports have the penchant to pull punches because no one wants to risk someone tearing their ACL for a meaningless skirmish, eSports are a little different. Sure there's plenty to worry about mentally and even some physical risks to consider, but there's a chance that big-ticket eSports pre-seasons could take off.

A lot of folks really enjoyed catching up on Overwatch this past weekend, where the final pre-season games aired for the Overwatch League, leading into the regular season in January. Seoul Dynasty definitely came out on top, winning all three of their games (as did Los Angeles Valiant, who won both of theirs), while the  San Francisco Shock, and LA Gladiators swapped wins and losses with each other. The big story is Dynasty's Ryu Je-hong, who had arguably the play of the pre-season with Moira.

Having watched the pre-season, I think the commentary still has a ways to go. Not that it's poor by any means, it just lacks focus, which is key for driving new viewers and bringing in people who otherwise don't care about Overwatch, or even gaming in general.

Given that Blizzard has a lot at stake for this league they'll probably be taking in feedback and adjusting accordingly, but we'll see once Stage 1 - Week 1 hits on January 10. The League will then run through June 16 (Stage 4 - Week 5), and go straight into the playoffs and the Grand Finals (Super Bowl).

News:: Expect guest characters and creator mode in Soulcalibur VI

Japan's Famitsu held an interview with the producers of Soulcalibur VI this week, asking them a variety of questions about the recently-announced fighter and what fans can expect to to see when it hits in 2018.

After translation, courtesy of Ryokutya2089 and Esuteru Blog, lots of exciting info was gathered from the team of Hiroshi Okubo, Yoshiyuki Takahashi and Michinori Ozawa.

Development of Soulcalibur VI is currently at around 70%. The keyword for the new game is "Reboot", which will be reflected in the game's Story Mode. SCVI will feature some all-new and classic characters, though fans should "look forward" to the announcement of guest characters, as have featured in Soulcaliburs past.

From a technical standpoint, the game will retain its 8-way movement, as well as its horizontal and vertical attack mechanics. Critical Edge attacks will return, now with single-button activation, as there is an emphasis on simplicity in performing visually impressive moves with your chosen character's weapon.

Soul Charge will allow players to meter-burn in order to improve certain attack properties. Lethal Hit moves will trigger huge blow-back on your opponent, as well as causing visual damage to their armour. Although there are no details, the Character Creation mode is set to return. The game will also have improved Training and Tutorial modes.

Given those latter comments, as well as the emphasis on easier controls and the rebooted storyline, it seems Namco really want to expand the Soulcalibur community, bringing in as many new players as returning veterans. Clearly the developers are going all-out with this release, hoping that it will be not only a great title in itself, but also the beginning of a new generation for the franchise.

News:: Assassin's Creed Origins just got a free horde mode and a new difficulty

What year is it? People are digging Assassin's Creed again? It's weird that I'm allowed to openly show reverence for it again, though I'm sure Ubisoft will find some way to revert that goodwill sooner or later.

In the meantime though we're riding high on free DLC, Final Fantasy teases, which includes the recent update of a horde mode and a new Nightmare difficulty. The latter is just a simple toggle that turns up enemy stats and makes them tougher, but the latter is based in the arena, with a recommended level of 32.

Later this month a Trial of the Gods option will pop up and involve Sekhmet (we've already had Anubis and Sobek), as well as the "wacky item pack" that should involve a Chocobo and some other bits of gear. Given that the Season Pass isn't even here yet and the game is already packed, Ubisoft is doing right by Origins.

News:: Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery coming to mobile

Hot on the mystic heels of Niantic's AR title Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, a second mobile game starring the cherubic master of the Dark Arts has been announced by Warner Bros. J.K Rowling-specific label, Portkey Games.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is developed by Los Angeles outfit Jam City, previously responsible for Panda Pop, Cookie Jam and Family Guy: Another Freakin' Mobile Game. One of these things is not like the other.

Hogwarts Mystery will see players create their own original character (Do Not Steal) and guide them through school life at Hogwarts, with whimsy and magical adventure at every turn, no doubt.

The Mary Sue of your making will interact with characters from the series, studying spells, partaking in duels, and making friends and rivals along the way. There is very little in the way of screens or info, but you can sign up to Portkey Game's mailing list on the official website.
