News::Review: The Bridge | GamingUnwrapped

The Bridge, published by the Quantum Astrophysicists Guild, is a small, yet delightfully entertaining puzzle game developed by two-man team, Ty Taylor and Mario CastaƱeda. It was released late February and is currently available exclusively for Windows. The game utilizes only a few keys but is also compatible with Xbox 360 controllers. The Bridge, which describes itself as Isaac Newton meets M. C. Escher, requires players to utilize perspective and physics to advance through the game in a manner that would undoubtedly make both icons proud. The game is reminiscent of Braid, another indie puzzler that grabbed a fairly large amount of attention upon its release.

News::Review: God of War: Ascension

How do you top something that was already considered over-the-top? Especially when this particular brand of over-the-top has become pretty familiar since in past eight years?

We all know that God of War's protagonist, Kratos, is an angry, super powerful killing machine that takes down even the biggest gods and monsters without even a hint of ever breaking his hardened scowl. So even more of that in yet another series game would be ... well, it would be fine, really. More God of War is never a bad thing, right?

But how about some emotion for a change? How about a backstory? How about some motivation that goes beyond simple anger?

As I see it, the God of War franchise could have progressed in one of two ways. Either go bigger, or go deeper. Thankfully, God of War: Ascension does both.

News::God Of War Ascension: see multiplayer and more here

News::God Of War Ascension review

This has been a long generation for Sony, but a quiet one for Kratos. Nathan Drake has fronted an entire trilogy on PS3 and Assassin’s Creed has settled into an annual cycle, but this is only the second God Of War game on the console, with a three-year gap between the pair. While that avoids familiarity breeding contempt, it also means developer Sony Santa Monica has had fewer chances to recognise that several elements of the God Of War template could do with modernisation. Much of what you’ll find in Ascension’s singleplayer is unchanged from the eight-year-old PS2 original. QTEs – hopefully dubbed ‘context-sensitive actions’ – are everywhere. Rather than celebrate its Greek mythological setting, Ascension fixates on ultraviolence and bare breasts. Bump into one of the many invisible walls and Kratos just runs on the spot.

But six games and eight years on from his debut, Kratos has learned a few new tricks. He’s a more agile climber, for one thing. He now automatically clambers from one handhold to the next, with a tap of the jump button flinging him across larger distances. He’s still no Lara Croft – and he remains in possession of the most comically awkward-looking double jump in gaming – but it’s a welcome change to a moveset that has remained largely static since his 2005 debut.

It’s not the only addition to Ascension’s singleplayer mode, but it’s one of the better ones. Kratos can now plant a blade in a surface and slide down it, and the first time you slalom your way down an incline, weaving back and forth to avoid obstacles, you can’t help but think of Journey, in which Sony Santa Monica also had a hand. But Journey’s surfing sequence is so memorable because it’s used sparingly, not half a dozen times in the opening few hours. And when Ascension asks you to tap X to jump over a gap while sliding, it’s in a QTE with an input window that ends before you reach the edge. If you try to jump at the last second, you can expect to see the game over screen.

More in keeping with the Ancient Greece setting, God Of War III’s aggressively shiny art style has been replaced with a muted colour palette and a painterly look. Aesthetically, it’s a great fit for PS3′s twilight years, but the visual approach is full of frustrations. Sony Santa Monica’s spectacle fetish frequently gets in the way, the camera pulling right out to show off a remarkable environment as the tiny speck under your control flails against a group of enemies. Some smart environmental puzzles are undermined by helper text telling you which of the three possible tools you need for every single job. Enemies spawn from the ground, so you’re never quite sure when a fight is approaching its end. There’s a maddening difficulty spike late on, too, where the studio seemingly realises it’s spent 27 chapters giving you more healing orbs than anyone could need and insists you beat a succession of powerful foes without respite or checkpoints. We like a challenge, but only if the combat system is up to it.

News::EA will be adding more SimCity servers over next two days

The SimCity launch has been pretty disastrous to say the least. My Twitter feed has been a constant stream of players experiencing connection issues, servers that won't save their cities, long queue times to get into a server, and just complete frustration at would should have otherwise been a pleasant experience.

Electronic Arts looks to be attempting to addressing these problems and issued a statement late list night saying they'll be adding more servers soon.

"What we are doing is deploying more servers over the coming two days which will alleviate many of the ongoing issues. We are also paying close attention to all the bug reports we are receiving from our fans. We’ve already pushed several updates in the last few days. Our live ops team is working 24/7 to resolve issues and ensure that bug fixes roll into the game as quickly as possible."

EA added that "This is, obviously, not the situation we wanted for our launch week and we want you to know that we are putting everything we have at resolving these issues."

Additionally, EA is currently deploying hotfixes to all servers that will include a variety of improvements and temporally disable "a few non-critical gameplay features" such as leaderboards, achievements, and region filters in order to alleviate server issues.

Will these servers be enough? I really hope so, as SimCity is a fun game. But more than that, people paid $60 for a product that is just plain broken. Yeah, it will be fixed eventually but it's really not fair at all for the early adopters. Look for our Destructoid official review to arrive soon.

News::Shigeru Miyamoto feels creatively satisfied

Perennial star child Shigeru Miyamoto has had an illustrious career, no doubt about that. From creating Donkey Kong to busting on stage with Link's sword and shield equipped, he has cemented himself as one of the most influential figures in all of gaming. So even though it appears that most of the projects he's involved in lately are rooted in established Nintendo franchises, he still finds opportunities to flex his creativity.

In an interview with GameSpot, the Nintendo EAD manager discusses his happiness in addition to the upcoming games lineup. He's quite candid in some of his responses, especially concerning the Pikmin 3's use of Wii U functions: "When I create a game, I don't necessarily always try to approach it from the idea of leveraging every feature or every ability of that new piece of hardware. In the case of Pikmin in particular, the approach that we took was really less of an approach of how can we [...] take advantage of what the Wii U is doing, per se, and instead how can we take what was that Pikmin experience and really make it a deeper experience for players."

That right there ought to be drilled into the heads of any developer hoping to work on Nintendo hardware. Miyamoto himself says you shouldn't feel forced to use every little gadget or doodad available to you, rather only using them to enhance an already conceived gameplay idea. You'd think that would be common knowledge by now.

News::Ubisoft’s Alain Corre on PS4, second-hand games and defying the transitional slump

After a strong set of financial results and our first glimpse of PS4 on February 20th, we spoke to Ubisoft’s EMEA executive director Alain Corre to get the inside story of how the publisher has defied the transition and what Corre thinks of PlayStation 4.

How was the PlayStation 4 event for Ubisoft? Are you relieved that you can finally start talking more openly about next-gen platforms?

Obviously the current generation is in its seventh or eighth year and we were all waiting for a refresh of technology and I think it’s very good news that Sony has announced a new machine at the end of this year. I think it will re-invigorate the market a lot and it will again give anticipation to a lot of gamers, developers and also lapsed gamers coming back to gaming.

When would you want PS4 to launch?

We always hope that it can be earlier than later. Sony said yesterday it was holiday so hopefully holiday – we want it as early as possible this year.

How much do you think it’ll cost?

We really don’t know – that’s really Sony’s remit and they haven’t communicated on that so we can’t speculate. Obviously what we want is for our games to be spread as quickly as they can to as many people as is possible so when the price is lower than higher it is better.

It all seems set up for Microsoft to make the next move now – when do you expect confirmation of the next Xbox?

That’s really for them to decide – we don’t have information on that. I think Sony was the first one to show the way, and I think they were right to do so because this market has been down for the last three years so it was important that the haeommorraging stops. It’s really getting a good buzz. PS4 showed the way – let’s see what the others will do.

What’s Ubisoft’s stance on second-hand games for next-gen platforms. Would you welcome or oppose a block on trade-ins?

I heard that Sony won’t block second hand which I think shows a certain respect to the product strategy that they had before. Obviously these guys are defining the rules of the market and so far I think second-hand is a double-edged sword – to a certain extent it helps players to invest in more new games by bringing back their old ones so they buy more, so that is positive. So if Sony decided to go that route we will adapt.

The thing is we are partners with the manufacturers – we are content creators and we have to adapt to the systems that are proposed. So we’ll see if it happens. Today we are going along with the logic we know with PS3 and moving to PS4. Depending on what news is coming elsewhere, we’ll see and we’ll adjust.

Your last set of financials showed strong digital revenues and you expanded the uPlay catalogue recently. Are you increasingly moving away from disc-based games?

I think digital is progressively gaining ground, because when the new generation they are not only internet-native but they are mobile-native. And so this generation, which is a big part of our consumer, they are used to consuming products without having a disc.

And so the more it goes the more these guys are coming into our market and automatically the possibilities in our digital business is growing. It is a new means of consumption. What is important is that our fans can get to our content wherever they want. What’s important for us is the service we can provide them and uPlay is super important because it enables us to know our consumers better – we have a direct relationship with them and we can use their feedback to improve what we do. We are giving all of that feedback back to the studio so we can improve our games. And so uPlay and these types of services are instrumental and key. We need to know our consumers better and have a relationship with them.

They are more and more connected – they always know what’s going on, they are always on the internet and on social networks. And the fact that we are now representing games from partnerships with EA and Warner. It’s a chance to increase the service we can offer.

There’s a lot of talk around transition right now – we’ve seen a lot of studio closures, physical game sales in decline and THQ go bankrupt in the last year. And yet if you look at the financial results Ubisoft seems to have defied this slump – why?

What matters most is quality and innovation. We took the decision four years ago to reduce the number of products we are producing every year but make sure that each of them is more polished and bigger. We think the fruits of that strategy are happening and last Christmas showed clearly that we had three games in the top five in the UK – the three games we call our magic trio – Assassin’s Creed III, Far Cry 3 and Just Dance 4 – these games were in three different categories. Action-adventure for Assassin’s, casual for Just Dance and FPS for Far Cry 3. And what we are trying to do is to get key franchises for all of the big genres because I think it gives us greater stability. And the next pillar we are trying to build with Watch Dogs is the open world GTA game.

I think yes, the market was tough last year but it shows again that when you have quality and innovation and sustainability in your relationship with consumers you can surprise and they follow you.

Does that mean a wider focus? More free to play and mobile games, for example?

With all of our products we want to create a brand so if it’s no good on one platform it is damaging to the brand. It’s very demanding because it’s pushing our studios to adapt each version to each platform.

Are the likes of Ouya and GameStick part of that plan?

We are looking and analysing what is going on with those platforms for sure. That’s two and I am sure there will be more. In the next few years what we see is that the critical mass is important to succeed. We are open to everything and so if we have the bandwidth for new opportunities we will look into them.

You can read more about what Corre thinks of Wii U’s price point and his vision for Watch Dogs through the links.

And asking nothing in return, but hymns in his name, the infamy. It is actually quite imaginable, if you have picked your copy of Far Cry 3 and given yourself a dose of what survival in a mad island actually feels like. Far Cry 3 is perhaps not the strongest title or the story of the season, but Vaas Montenegro, the pirate king of Rook Island, certainly is the creation of the year.

News::Glitch Free Gaming Episode 19 Waking up with a surprise

"In a week of epic comebacks, Ryan boots Lara Croft in the face to take the coveted guest spot for the 2nd week running. After some shared toilet humor, we talk about some games. Kieran plays the Japanese demo of Soul Sacrifice , Mike plays some Metal Gear and Star Wars pinball and Paul tries DmC. Paul also played Tomb Raider, but has been threatened with his Pokemon game saves by Mike if he says anything about it. Especially the bit {deleted}", says Glitch Free Gaming.

News::Tomb Raider Review | Clickonline

Clickonline writes: "Crystal Dynamics has crafted a revelatory and revisionist reboot in Tomb Raider - taking the rough sketch of the Lara Croft character and embellishing her past to create a unique adventure that doesnt get bogged down in needless homage. It is, first and foremost, a premium product in its own right, a mature adventure without the need to paint its leading lady as barely clothed sexual archetype."

News::Hotline Miami fan film is full of murder, and kids

I quite enjoy fan films, and was really digging this one for Hotline Miami . Then I started to notice the actors here all look very ... young. And then that child gets brutality shot up near the end. Kids these days!

Still, bravo for the editing and effects.
