News:: A parent's guide to Pokemon

I was recently attending a social event with some friends, and one of them had brought her two boys along, ages 11 and 9. One of the only other kids at the function (also 11) had brought along her 3DS to keep occupied. The boys were transfixed, and when I spoke to their mother about it she said all they want to talk about anymore is Pokémon. They were hoping to get Pokémon as a gift this year for Christmas, but she didn't really know where to begin. I offered to help, since this is something I can call myself an expert in without hyperbole. I thought the information might be helpful for other people too, so if you're interested, read on.

News:: Hot and Steamy: Uncensored nude genitals climaxing

It is that time of year in America, the time when families get together to eat food and hate each other while doing it. It's also the time of year when everyone starts their holiday shopping by standing in line for hours to buy repurposed old models of electronics and discounted games that didn't sell well at launch. Huzzah!

Perhaps you could blow off some steam this year by playing some of these hot new indie games releasing this week on Steam instead of calling aunt Linda the c-word again, yeah?

News:: 'Star Citizen' team will share its schedule with the public

Of all the complaints about Star Citizen's development, transparency is one of the biggest. Outside of basic goals, it's hard to know how well the epic-scale space game is coming along at any given moment -- there are concerns that Cloud Imperium Games is frittering away all that crowdfunding money. The company wants to put some of those fears to rest, though. As of Star Citizen's 2.6 alpha, the studio will share its internal development schedule with the public on a weekly basis. Cloud Imperium will clean up the details to make them more accessible, but you'll know whether or not there's a change or setback.

News:: Review: Xanadu Next

Ever since I started playing a couple of Nihon Falcom’s games last year, I became a huge fan of the studio in a matter of seconds. From the Ys series’ fast-paced combat to The Legend of Heroes titles’ world-building aspects, there’s something about their stuff that manages to get many players invested in their creations.

The thing that makes Xanadu Next, a spinoff of Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II, an appealing title is that it feels like a mix between The Legend of Zelda, Diablo, and the Iga Castlevania games. An interesting thing about this vibe is that it's linked to the original Dragon Slayer, which contained many ideas that likely influenced the original Zelda and Metroid, such as its exploration format and the ability to overcome certain trials with specific items.

News:: Ben Heck's reverse-engineered Game Boy Printer

The Ben Heck Show - Episode 263 - Ben Heck Reverse Engineers Game Boy Printer

It's a bit late for Ben to break the warranty on this particular piece of hardware: The Game Boy Printer was released ages ago, which means it's ripe for being reverse-engineered! First we need to know what we're dealing with, so Ben performs a teardown to reveal the microcontroller and RAM, at which point he determines what pin-outs are needed to connect to an Arduino. That's not all, though -- we also need to know how to talk to the printer, and the easiest way to do that is with an oscilloscope and an original Game Boy Camera to snoop on the data stream. Not everything is so straightforward, however: Ben hits a snag and the printer stops partway through printing. What could he be missing?

What other hardware should Ben reverse-engineer? And what have you reverse-engineered? Let us know over on the element14 Community.
