News:: Cave Story+ adds co-op on Nintendo Switch next week

The main reason I wanted to get Cave Story+ on Nintendo Switch was the promise of two-player co-op. As these things often go, I grew restless and ended up buying the game early, working my up to Curly Brace before forcing myself to stop playing. Cave Story: it's too dang good to put down!

I'm glad I'll be able to pick it back up soon. The co-op update is set for next Friday, September 15.

Sue! I never thought I'd be so glad to see Sue.

News:: Here is a closer look at Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite's pre-order costumes

You just gotta love pre-order culture. I mean, you have to, because it's not going anywhere (sadly). To give fans a closer look at some of the cut content being offered for shelling out cash early, Capcom has uploaded a trailer showing off the alternate costumes for Ryu, Hulk, Thor and X. I mean, they look cool, but not cool enough to get me to put down a reservation.

News:: Your Bad Movie Night Guide, Vol. 7: Class of Nuke 'Em High

I want to play with my laser!

Welcome to Class of Nuke 'Em High, a legend in the bad movie annals. It's producer, Troma Entertainment, is behind other notorious members of the Your Bad Movie Guide (look for some in future coverage), so you know these guys are masters of making crap. Did somebody say crap? Class of Nuke 'Em High is here! If you've ever wondered what would happen if someone built a public high school one mile from a nuclear power plant and wished someone would make a scientifically responsible and reality-grounded film based off the concept, you're shit out of luck. Class of Nuke 'Em High has zero basis in reality. Zilch. Nada. It's not a school. Those definitely aren't high school age "kids." And hazmat suits aren't the same as disposable painters protective coveralls.

News:: Monolith says Shadow of War's end fight won't suck

Maybe the strongest praise for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor necessitates pointing out its most glaring flaw. The game was a darling, managing to please fans and earn critical acclaim. All of that in spite of the fact that the final boss encounter with Sauron suuuuucccccckkkkked.

The climax, the moment the whole game had been working toward, was incredibly anticlimactic. The battle was a quick-time event sequence (and a short one, at that). None of Shadow of Mordor's systems were implemented in any way. No sign of the lauded Nemesis system, no Arkham-like combat, no Assassin's Creed-like climbing around. Instead, Mordor's biggest threat was dismissed with just a few button presses.

It was such a ridiculous letdown that it could really only be chalked up to the realities and constraints of video game development. Anyone who played that whole game had to know that wasn't the end that Monolith envisioned. The studio must've run out of time or money or both.

News:: The Adaptation: Super Mario Brothers: The Movie

[It takes a special kind of bad to be as incredibly endearing as Super Mario Bros.: The Movie. I could explain it, but Gamemaniac3434 has already written about it - so why don't you read his brain-barf, instead?! This is yet another front-paged submission to our monthly Bloggers Wanted prompt. Why don't you participate this month? All the cool kids are doing it! - Wes]

I am a man who loves him some good-bad movies; I’ve formed a group around watching them and I attempt to get this group whipped together at least once every two weeks. It’s something I deeply enjoy doing and I figured that I would meet the challenge set forth for this month's Bloggers Wanted [Actually, two months ago :) - Ed.] by looking at a movie that holds a very special place in my instance of this long-standing tradition.

News:: PUBG brings in over a million concurrent players

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has been battling Counter Strike: GO and Dota 2 atop the Steam charts, and today the battle royale title reached a new milestone for itself: one million concurrent players.

It's wild to think about where PUBG is at, how quickly it got there, and where it's headed. I don't envy the folks responsible for expanding the game and balancing their vision with the community's.

News:: Assassin's Creed: Origins will take some getting used to, but that's a net positive

They're killing gods with peach pits. An ill bull was the motivator for my PAX West demo with Assassin's Creed: Origins, as he was a worshiped deity in ancient Egypt. Peach pits are apparently toxic when ingested. This livestock was on the verge of being a deadstock. I think it was Cleopatra (or possibly another queen) who said "Gimme Toro, gimme some more."

This was the "Lizard's Mask" story mission in Assassin's Creed: Origins, and it sets an important tone for the game. More than just a sick cow, it sows the seeds of political dissent in Egypt. A pair of priestess sisters poisoned it but only because their brother was being held hostage. Their defense doesn't hold up. At the end of the mission, they're sentenced to death by being boiled alive inside a bronze bull.

We were able to play the entirety of this quest at PAX West, and it's all captured above for you to see exactly how Origins functions. (It's also conveniently franken-stitched together so as to not waste your time with my dumbassery.) Egypt is a place I want to spend more time in. This is the most excited I've been for an Assassin's Creed game in a long time.

It didn't come easy though. This is my second time going hands-on with Origins and I have yet to fully grasp the combat. At E3, this was my undoing. I've played every single mainline Assassin's Creed title and the fighting mechanics have been mostly formulaic and unchanged throughout. Origins changes that and it's tough to undo a thousand hours of muscle memory in an hour-long demo.

I'm confident that I'll eventually get the hang of it, and I'm also confident that this will eventually be a positive for Assassin's Creed. This is a franchise that has taken loads of criticism over the years for failing to innovate enough. Black Flag put you on a ship and called you a pirate, and it was not-coincidentally the best-received game in a while; it was also the most un-Assassin's Creed.

Origins is shaping up to feel like a true Assassin's Creed game and an innovator. The mechanics might take some getting used to, but that's what this series needs right now.

News:: The first 'Destiny 2' expansion will reintroduce players to Osiris

If you've already finished Destiny 2's campaign and are grinding through the endgame, here's some news you might be interested in. The first expansion for developer Bungie's shared-world shooter is dubbed "Curse of Osiris," named for the infamous multiplayer mode from its prequel. This time 'round, it's a campaign expansion according to Polygon, and it takes place on Mercury where you'll "journey through time and space" to learn Osiris' (a legendary warlock) secrets and reunite him with Ikora Rey -- the warlock vanguard who gives you class-specific gear.

News:: The Evil Within 2 feels like a more well-rounded game

I thought The Evil Within 2 had a strong first showing at E3. The imagery in the reveal trailer woke me the hell up (remember, Bethesda's presser was on a Sunday night), and I'm always down for contorted monstrosities in my spooky video games. "I need to keep better tabs on this," I remember thinking.

In the time since, we've seen a lot more of the sequel, whether it was that now-removed leaked footage, a photographer serial killer, and crafting systems. More recently, there was "the gruesome, giggling guardian," an uncomfortably fleshy, stitched-together pile of bodies with a buzzsaw hand.

I played through this early story sequence at PAX. It was... all right! Too scripted to be even remotely scary, but tense, all the same. The sound and creature design did most of the heavy lifting.

News:: Sci-fi horror adventure SOMA confirmed for Xbox One

Following a ratings board listing for SOMA on Xbox One, Frictional Games has confirmed that its underwater sci-fi horror adventure is coming to the platform, though "no other details are being announced at this time," according to a rep for the studio. To date, it's been playable on PC and PS4.

If you've been on the fence but have heard buzz about the story, yep, SOMA's good as heck.

It's not scary so much as creepy, so if you can't handle games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent (fair enough!), you might be able to make it through this one. It'll stick with you long after you've played.

News:: ARMS 3.0 update brings button mapping

Version 3.0 update adds button remapping functionality for Arms. Motion control sensitivity can also be adjusted, but it doesn't appear you can go so far as change the type of motions that correspond with certain attacks.

Full button mapping is a feature that all games should feature. Most PC games have that figured out but consoles are slow to adapt. There is some system level mapping on at least the PlayStation 4 if you really need it, but it would be better to have it on the game level to avoid having to switch it up often.

News:: Syco Sid, Trish Stratus and Breezango round out WWE 2K18's roster

2K Sports have revealed the final batch of playable Superstars in their upcoming WWE2K18 title, completing the roster for the wrestling franchise's latest endeavor.

Youngsters Peyton Royce, Aiden English and Rich Swann will step into the ring with established stars Charlotte Flair, R-Truth and The New Day. WWE2K18 is also a Legend-heavy game, with The Ultimate Warrior, Jake "The Snake" Roberts and Sycho Sid returning to the squared circle for this latest rumble.

McMahon lovers will also be pleased to know that, naturally, both Stephanie and Shane, with his sweet-ass punches, have also made the cut. This final reveal brings the roster just-shy of a staggering 130 playable characters, with further additions planned for DLC. Of course, all of this is for naught if the game remains a tiresome reminder of iterations past.

We will find out soon, as WWE2K18 launches on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on October 17.

News:: Another JRPG headed to PC, this time it's Accel World vs. Sword Art Online

Accel World vs. Sword Art Online: Millennium Twilight released in the west on July 7, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita, but now it's headed to PC as well as Accel World Vs. Sword Art Online Deluxe Edition When? In four days, on September 12, 2017. The following DLC are also included: “Castaway from Another World,” “SAO Origins,” and “SAO Ordinal Scale.”

I guess it's not longer a novelty to get niche Japanese games, particular RPGs, on PC when they usually would be exclusive to Sony consoles. Anyway, there's a lot of Sword Art Online and Accel World content out there that I'm a bit frozen, not knowing where to start. Like a lot of anime and games, I end up indefinitely procrastinating long ones all the while eating up all the shorter, bite-sized titles. That's growing up and losing time I suppose.

News:: Malaysia blocks Steam access in opposition to Fight of Gods game

Recently released one-on-one punch-up Fight of Gods was bound to court controversy. But, earlier today, Malaysia blocked access to the entirety of the Steam platform, nationwide, in response to the game's availability.

Malaysia's Dr Salleh Said Keruak has called for all previous downloads of the title to be declared void, or "Further action will be taken."

"Malaysians respect all cultural and religious sensitivities, and the sale and distribution of the religiously insensitive and blasphemous games must be stopped immediately," stated the Communications and Multimedia Minister. "It is in the public interest to ensure that immediate steps are taken so that such contents do not continue to harm others."

The publishers of the game, which sees figures such as Buddha, Zeus and Jesus Christ do battle with one another, quickly reached out to Steam to resolve the situation. It now appears that Steam has returned to live status in the region, with Fight of Gods obviously removed from sale.

A press statement from the publisher reads as follows: "Fight of Gods is a video game that takes a humorous approach to religion in the same way that other entertainment formats have – across television, film, books and theatre. The game is not promoting any religious agenda and is not designed to offend.

The description of the game on the digital platforms through which it is distributed provide clear guidance on the nature of the game and its content so that people can freely choose whether or not to play it. We fully respect the choice of those who would not wish to play it.

We are disappointed that such freedom of choice is not given to everyone and in particular that the game has been forcibly removed from sale in Malaysia, although no direct communication has been received by us as to the reasons for this. Nevertheless we respect any rules and censorship imposed in any given territory."

News:: Okami HD likely headed to PS4, Xbox One, and PC

Okami HD has been rated by the Korean Game Ratings Board for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC suggesting upcoming releases on those platforms. This corroborates a report by Laura Kate Dale that PS4 and Xbox One ports are coming this Christmas. This the first time the game would appear on PC.

Great news now that it seems all but confirmed. I tried playing on Wii once but early tutorial sections were either too strict on the motion they wanted from me or I was too dumb to figure it out. Never got far into it and this gives me less reason to procrastinate.

News:: Blizzard opening dedicated esports arena in Los Angeles

Blizzard Entertainment have announced ambitious plans to open its own dedicated space for arena gaming this Fall. The so-named Blizzard Arena Los Angeles will open October 7th to coincide with the Overwatch season one playoffs.

In a press release, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime spoke with pride of the new venture: "We're at a tipping point for esports and we look forward to helping usher in a new era of competition-based entertainment...We're honored to bring the best in esports to the same stage that some of the biggest names in entertainment have called home."

There are even plans to open a small store nearby, selling rotational merchandise dependent on whatever tournament is currently underway. That's some big bucks, brother.

Though the new arena, located at Burbank, California, is expected to be the home for the most prestigious competitive events within Overwatch, Hearthstone, Starcraft II, World of Warcraft Arena and Heroes of the Storm. Blizzard will continue to include high-ranking matches as part of their Blizzcon events, traditionally held in Anaheim.

News:: Despite fan outcry, it seems like Bungie's new shader system is here to stay

Bungie is holding its ground yet again after another player outcry.

This time it's shaders, which have gone from the lovely, unlimited use customization items they once were, into the consumable, loot crate driven items they are now in Destiny 2. The game's director, Luke Smith, attempted to address the issue over Twitter this week, downplaying the nature of the new shader mechanic and attempting to explain that it's actually good for the game.

Smith retorts that players should be "flush with shaders," while playing, that they drop more often at 20, that it's a "unique reward" for playing (hey just like the old shaders), and that you'll want to repeat events to get more shaders.

It's an impassioned plea, but likely Smith has his hands tied and shaders are here to stay. The new system simply encourages more gambling, as players will feel the need to spend more money on the Eververse, which provides players with Bright Engrams that can provide unique shaders as well as dust to buy select items outright (ha, there's so many Blizzard amalgams in the sequel, including the Hearthstone dust reference).

Naturally I'm not really buying it. The decision to tie so much to microtransactions day one, when the original game didn't even do it when it was eventually eased in during an expansion, isn't healthy for the game. And it's not the shaders that bother me so much, it's the item mods that are directly linked to gameplay. Let the premium $60 purchase (plus season pass cost) speak for itself and keep micros cosmetic.

News:: Nab the Walking Dead: Season One for free over on the Humble Store

Where there's a digital retailer, there is a game sale and Humble Bundle is having an "End of Summer" event with a lot of pretty good deals. The best deal, though, is that the first season of Telltale's The Walking Dead is absolutely free for the next day. If you've somehow managed to not play one of the various ports, do yourself a favor and nab this. Its still my favorite of the Telltale's zombie focused narrative adventures, despite having some pretty aged technology powering it.

As for the rest of the sale, you'll find that basically everything on the Humble Store is discounted. Since there are far too many games to list them all, I'll give you some of my highlights for what you should pick up:

News:: ‘Arms’ update adds user-customizable controls

Nintendo announced today on Twitter that the Switch fighting game Arms is getting an update that will probably make a lot of players pretty happy. News:: YouTubers avoid fine over Valve 'CS:GO' gambling scam

A pair of YouTubers have avoided fines after the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charged them with steering viewers to a CS:GO gambling site without disclosing that they owned it. Despite misleading viewers (including teenagers) and paying other YouTube personalities to do the same, Trevor "TmarTN" Martin and Thomas "Syndicate" Cassell don't even need to admit guilt, the commission ruled. "The goal of the FTC isn't to be a punitive or draconian agency," the FTC's Mitchell J. Katz told Rolling Stone. "We are here to educate consumers about new markets."

News:: L.A. Noire will have the 'Switch tax' that makes it $10 more expensive on Nintendo's platform

Yikes! This Switch tax likes to creep up on us.

Wait, the Switch tax? Yeah, it's that thing that makes Switch physical copies $10 more expensive because of the need to use a cart instead of a disc. It's happened several times in the past (and it's even been taken back once), and at the moment, Rockstar is joining in on the Switch tax revolution.

As listed on their official site, the "HD rumble, touch-screen, and motion control" features exclusive to the Switch will basically run you $50, as opposed to $40 for the other editions. The more shocking thing here is that Rockstar, a company that usually shows Nintendo no love, is supporting the Switch at all.

Everyone, consumers and publishers alike are riding high on the system, and support like this will keep that chain going.

News:: Splatoon 2 prepares for messy results with latest weapon update

Like clockwork, Friday sees the announcement of a classic weapon returning to the splurge-tastic arsenal of Nintendo's popular arena-shooter Splatoon 2.

This week, it is the compact killing-machine (does not actually kill) known as the Custom Splattershot Jr. This one-handed weapon, uncannily similar to the water-pistols of yore, can be considered the Uzi 9mm of the Splatoon world, providing inaccurate, short-range rapid-fire. Spray n' Pray, baby.

The Custom Splattershot Jr. comes equipped with an Auto-Bomb sub and an Ink Storm special, and goes live September 9.
