News:: Here's an encouraging look at Blighttown in Dark Souls: Remastered

One of the main selling points for Dark Souls: Remastered is a smoother and more stable frame rate, and even though recent footage has been encouraging in that regard, we've still wondered how Blighttown would fare given how poorly it ran in the game's original release. This footage captured by YouTube user Reakor Kacho at PAX East shows a bit of the area on Nintendo Switch.

Even from just this short off-screen footage, you can tell the performance is greatly improved.

I can't wait to revisit this game -- and yes, that even goes for dreary old Blighttown. As much as the dimly-lit zone has a penchant for annoying players with its less-than-straightforward layout and scumbag poison dart shooters, it doesn't top my most-dreaded list. That honor goes to Tomb of Giants.

I've reached a silly point now where I have to talk myself out of playing Dark Souls before Remastered hits in May. Following each and every bit of footage that comes out surely isn't helping matters.

News:: Resident Evil 7 has broken five million sales

Resident Evil 7 has been welcomed to the family...the family of games that have sold more than five million copies! Capcom's 2017 reformed take on Resident Evil isn't ready to die yet.

Capcom announced the new sales milestone alongside the reveal that it won the Best VR Audio award at this year's Game Audio Network Guild Awards. The five million statistic is slightly misleading though. Resident Evil 7 is actually up to 5.1 million sales now.

At this point, we're a little more than 14 months removed from the game's launch. Resident Evil 7 got off to a fast start, as it moved three million units in the first three weeks. Since then, it has picked up another 2.1 million. There aren't any exact figures to support this, but December's release of the Gold Edition (the version that contained all the add-ons) surely gave sales a late-year shot in the arm.

However, Capcom is still a long ways from its ultimate goal. Last May, the developer revealed that it hopes to eventually sell 10 million copies of Resident Evil 7. Given Capcom's strategies in the past, that will almost definitely involve several re-releases on various new platforms. That's a lot of ground to make up from ports. But, it also feels like Resident Evil 7 will probably hold up for years to come.

News:: The Gardens Between hides its mind-boggling puzzles behind a simple interface

I haven’t really followed news on The Voxel Agents’ upcoming The Gardens Between. My only real knowledge came from Sony’s Paris Games Week event last October, so I wasn’t sure exactly what changed or how the game was coming along. All I knew was that it was a puzzle game with pretty graphics and it was supposedly employing a simple interface to get its message across.

While a lot of that still describes the game to a tee, the amount of depth present in the puzzles with such limited input is impressive. This is essentially a game where you’ll press left or right and X at certain intervals to manipulate a diorama-like world to progress, but that description sells the game short. You can’t just hold right and reach the conclusion; you’ll actually need to view these little puzzle boxes as a 3D space to get through the challenges.

News:: Chainsawesome Games' Aftercharge is a fresh take on competitive shooters

Competitive shooters seem to be going one of two ways these days. You have your class-based shooter like Overwatch or the oh-so-popular battle royale games like PUBG and Fortnite. Chainsawesome Games is going for something different with its new title Aftercharge.

Aftercharge is a three-on-three first-person shooter with a pretty unique premise: one team plays as invincible guards protecting a series of energy pylons, while the other is a trio of invisible robots hell-bent on destroying said pylons.

News:: Off Grid makes you hack like a middle-aged dad

Watch Dogs 2 was a pretty good representation of the hacking community that has grown over the years, but it did have one big flaw. These supposed nobodies were running around with near superhuman bullet resistance and blowing shit up with military-grade firearms. For a cast of characters just wanting to screw around with Hollywood productions, killing hundreds of people always felt odd. While you could non-lethally finish each mission, combat was still involved at nearly every corner.

In real life, that wouldn’t be the case. Most people aren’t bullet sponges or posses a near encyclopedic knowledge of firearms. An average Joe with some solid hacking skills would get put down pretty quick after getting caught. Off Grid captures that feeling, but even goes a bit further to acquaint players with the world of hacking.

The opening moments of Off Grid see you making breakfast for your daughter and acting like a normal dad. She gives you the gift of some knock-off Google Glass eyewear before an agency busts into the house and arrests her for being a hacker. Unaware of your daughter’s second life, but still wishing to help, your journey tasks you with tracking down friends of hers and trying to find out what is going on.

News:: You can get a replica Linking Book for Myst's 25th Anniversary

As we recently learned, Cyan is celebrating Myst's 25th anniversary with new versions of every Myst game that are compatible with modern PCs. The company is also assembling something special for fans: a limited-run, Kickstarter-only physical edition with a 1:1 replica Linking Book. That package will run you $100, but there's also a $169 tier that incorporates an LCD screen and speaker into the book.

If you just want digital copies of the games, the pricing comes to $49 for Windows 10 versions of the seven titles: Myst: Masterpiece, Riven, Myst 3: Exile, Myst 4: Revelation, Myst 5: End of Ages, Uru: Complete Chronicles, and realMyst: Masterpiece Edition.

"This Kickstarter will provide the entire collection in a special exclusive package, but the updated versions of the games will also make their way to digital download services, starting with GOG.com, as automatic updates."

Cyan also added that while it doesn't have the capacity to release updated Mac versions at this time, the studio hopes to "continue to work to update or rebuild some of the Mac titles, and explore other options to try to make more of the games playable again on the Mac in the future."

News:: New York Supreme Court shuts down former GTA producer's claim that Rockstar owes him $150 million

It has been almost exactly two years since we first learned about Leslie Benzies' lawsuit against Rockstar. Benzies, the former head of Rockstar North and a longtime producer of the studio's biggest games, alleges that he was forced out of the company and is owed $150 million in unpaid royalties. The judicial system doesn't agree with that claim.

Benzies' case mostly relies on a royalty agreement that escalated him to "Rockstar Principal" -- a small group of key players who are most responsible for the companies success. The agreement is essentially a profit sharing arrangement meant to provide extra compensation to Benzies and Rockstar co-founders Sam and Dan Houser. Benzies argues the Housers were given more money than him during his 17-month sabbatical.

However, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the New York Supreme Court recently ruled that Rockstar does not owe Benzies $150 million. Its interpretation of the contract finds that there's no language suggesting mandatory equal payments, and that it only accounts for "discretionary royalty payments." This makes the agreement seem like a good faith-based arrangement that's meant to compensate bonuses whenever Rockstar feels they're warranted.

All is not lost for Benzies, though. The court also ruled he is still entitled to certain royalties that went unpaid. Benzies also successfully argued that there was a breach in his employment agreement that revolves around salary and stock options. It's likely that Benzies will squeeze some more money out of Rockstar before it's all said and done. He just won't squeeze out $150 million.

News:: I got a distinct gothic vibe from Dark Devotion's PAX demo

I hate feeding into the stereotype of press comparing things to Dark Souls. When giving Dark Devotion a shot at PAX this weekend, I couldn’t really think of what else to call this at first glance. There is a stamina meter that governs your attacks, blocking drains stamina, and even performing a roll dodge does the same. You have to plan out your attacks in reaction to enemies and even doing something like changing weapons takes a second before you can attack again.

What Dark Devotion isn’t, though, is strictly Dark Souls in 2D. Even if some of the inspiration for different mechanics may have come from From Software’s mega hit, Dark Devotion draws more from the works of H.P. Lovecraft to create an atmosphere that is overwhelmingly bleak and dreary. This isn’t a pretty game to look at, even if the pixel art is quite nice.

News:: Overwatch League star fired amid sexual misconduct allegations

Overwatch League (OWL) is fairly new on the eSports scene; we're watching it evolve before our eyes. The last few months have shown us that acting badly in real life has gotten a handful of players punished, like Dallas Fuel player Felix "xQc" Lengyel first being suspended — then released — from the team for his awful behavior. Now, the Boston Uprising has terminated Jonathan "DreamKazper" Sanchez's contract over allegations of sexual misconduct with a young fan over Twitter.

News:: LawBreakers studio's new game is an x-treme battle royale shooter

I wasn't expecting to hear about the next project from LawBreakers developer Boss Key Productions so soon, but here we are, and here it is: a free-to-play battle royale game called Radical Heights.

Besides the ridiculous bikes, which I kind of love, the big point of differentiation for this game-show shooter is the ability to bank your cash mid-match. You can withdraw from an ATM to "purchase weapons early in the next game" or just use the funds to customize your "personal prize room."

Radical Heights is out tomorrow and Boss Key expects the Early Access period to last about a year.

"The core gameplay experience is complete. However, players should expect to experience placeholder assets in the world including; models, audio, animation, and even entire buildings. We are actively working on improving performance and bringing the level of polish up across the entire experience."

I'm not convinced this game will catch on in a meaningful way, but maybe even a small slice of the battle royale pie is enough for now. With the way LawBreakers went down, at least it's free-to-play.

News:: Sam Fisher is confirmed for a 'Ghost Recon Wildlands' mission

If you were excited about the tease for military shooter Ghost Recon Wildlands getting a Splinter Cell crossover, you're in luck. News:: Super Mario Bros. speedrun master Kosmic sets another world record

It's hard to think of a speedrun more pure than Super Mario Bros. There have been myriad "classic" or popular speedruns that have been born out of competition, random luck, or perseverance, like the blindfolded Punch Out!! runs or anything involving Mega Man X, but I always find myself gravitating toward the NES Mario for some reason.

In this case it's actually the SNES remake of Mario Bros. (via the great Mario All-Stars), which actually makes things a little harder. Due to the limitations of the NES enemies could actually despawn if there were too many on-screen, and the hitboxes were a bit smaller. As speedrunner Kosmic points out, several levels (4-2/8-4) are slower because of it.

That didn't stop him from setting a new world record though. On April 6 he achieved the world record time of 5:01.30, beating out the previous time of 5:01.701 from Andrewg1990. Kosmic will be at Summer Games Done Quick if you want to see him live, where he'll be performing a warp-less run and a one-handed run.

News:: Create the gun of your dreams in Mothergunship

In the indie games scene, procedural generation and rogue-like elements seem to be the golden formula one strives for. I can’t tell you how many games I’ve heard about with those two buzzwords attached, but Mothergunship is just another to add to the list. In a very awesome twist, this game decides to not take itself seriously and allows the players to create custom guns with a system similar to LEGO bricks.

Speaking with Joe Mirabello from Terrible Posture Games, he said the whole idea behind Mothergunship was to give the player as much freedom as possible. He doesn’t like how rogue-like games with crafting elements end up being about exploiting gameplay systems instead of showcasing the creativity of the person behind the monitor. In an effort to let players not only make broken weaponry, but express what their personal playstyle might be, Mothergunship accomplishes that with gusto.

News:: Raft is an upcoming survival game that involves a water-heavy hellscape and sharks

There are a lot of good hellscapes out there, but being stranded on a tiny raft-city while sharks roam the waters is pretty high on the list in terms of terror.

Axolot Games is tapping into that innate fear of the deep with Raft, a survival game that involves building structures (solo or with others) on top of a giant raft, while scavenging for tools and items in the ocean -- and of course, avoiding sharks.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the game it hit seven million downloads on itch.io in alpha form, and its creators have decided to plunk it on Steam. Raft will debut on Steam early access on May 23, for $19.99.

News:: A Quiet Place has the second best opening of the year

Studios are learning a pretty good lesson recently: if you make good horror movies people will show up. The obvious proof of this is IT, but backing that thesis up is this weekend's $50 million for the stellar A Quiet Place. That's the best Friday-Sunday opening for any movie this year not called Black Panther, including the likes of Ready Player One. Not too shabby for a movie that cost only $17 million to make.

The Flixist staff was actually just discussing the fact that we're in a bit of a horror renaissance at the moment. In the past few years filmmakers of all kinds are tackling the genre, and bringing new and exciting things to it after what felt like a decade of stagnation. It's a good time to get scared at the movies, that's for sure.

Lets also point out that Blockers had a really solid box office as well, coming in third over the weekend. The film is far funnier than you'd think for a movie starring John Cena and involving what seems like a terrible out-of-date premise (hint: it doesn't play out like you think). If you're looking for a comedy at some point you can do far, far, far worse.

News:: The groundhog saw his shadow and now there's four more Final Fantasy XV DLCs on the way

Man! Final Fantasy XV.

For months I've talked about how this single game has become a series with more man hours put into it than entire indie studios in their lifetime. At first it was silly, but now it's a force to be reckoned with. If you thought the initial salvo of DLC episodes was it (just three, one for each of Noctis' friends/party members) -- you were sorely mistaken.

Announced at PAX East, Square Enix is getting ready to dump four more episodes on us later this year (Ardyn, Aranea, Lunafreya, Noctis, in order). We knew about Ardyn for sure and basically knew a few others would be getting side stories, but now it's entirely confirmed and on a special calendar. These episodes are said to come rapid-fire in January 2019, at a rate of one per month. Episode Noctis eh? I thought that was called "Final Fantasy XV."

Oh, and this summer, Comrades, the multiplayer thing you may or may not have played (or even heard of) is becoming a standalone release, and will be updated throughout 2019. Strap yourselves in folks -- that "Royal Edition" is far from complete.

News:: Kamiko is now the third-best selling indie eShop Switch title with 200,000 sold

Kamiko seems to have done very well for Flyhigh Works, as they've just announced that it's sold 200,000 copies on the Switch eShop. That's just one platform, and the studio announced that it's currently the third-best selling indie game on the entire eShop.

Kamiko's success is for multiple reasons, a lot of which is timing. Flyhigh Works dropped it on the eShop far before it reached saturation levels at nearly the start of the Switch's lifecycle. It was also $5 (it still is), which made it an instant impulse buy, and it was a pretty good game.

To celebrate, Flyhigh Works is bringing their Fairune Collection to the Switch, which includes Fairune and Fairune 2 for the 3DS (both combined are roughly $10 on the 3Ds eShop).

News:: Michael Ironside returns in Ghost Recon Wildland's Splinter Cell

When Ubisoft announced that second year of content for Ghost Recon Wildlands, I really didn't expect much from it. This was a mediocre game, at best, that already had a plethora of content that went nowhere. How the hell could you expand it and make it more interesting? Adding Splinter Cell's Sam Fisher and having Michael Ironside return to voice the iconic character has certainly changed my tune.

Starting tomorrow (April 10), "Special Operation I: Splinter Cell" will be available for players of Wildlands on all platforms. Along with seeing the return of the rightful voice of Sam, you'll also have a mission where you can tag along with the shadow master and a bunch of new cosmetic items themed around Third Echelon and Splinter Cell. I'm particularly fond of the pistol, which takes me back to the old Xbox days.

Unlike the Predator event, this new Splinter Cell mission will be a permanent addition to the Wildlands experience. The only caveat will be that if you don't finish the mission before the event period finishes (on May 16), you'll be locked out from getting the cosmetic rewards. While that sucks, at least Ubisoft isn't throwing away the most interesting part.

News:: SCUM makes me realize how scary real life is

While I pride myself on being open to new things, one of the few styles of gaming I’m just not a fan of is the burgeoning survival genre. These games aren’t similar to how some might associate "survival" in gaming (Resident Evil for example), but encourages player enjoyment from the very act of living and surviving in a realistic environment.

SCUM is an upcoming PC title that is more than likely not for me, but I have to admire its attention to detail. Similar to something like Rust, SCUM is a game where you’ll be hunting animals, crafting clothing and generally trying to fend off death at every turn. Rust could be considered Easy Mode compared to SCUM, though.

I sat down with Josip Barisic - community manager for developer Gamepires - and hearing him explain all the various different systems in SCUM was a real shock to the system. I didn’t realize people wanted a game so realistic, but I suppose there is a niche for everything. I’ll do my best to breakdown what SCUM is all about, but feel free to make the same confused faces I did during his presentation.

News:: 'Radical Heights' is Cliff Bleszinski's free-to-play battle royale game

That didn't take long. After announcing that LawBreakers wasn't living up to expectations (and making enough money), and teasing a new project on Friday, developer Boss Key has revealed the "passion project" it teased. Try to feign surprise when you find out that it's a free-to-play battle royale game. On the surface, Radical Heights stands out from the crowd with a vibrant, quasi cel-shaded, retro-futuristic game-show vibe that hearkens back to the '80s. Meaning, there's are a lot of extreme pastels and hot pink triangles complementing its over-the-top Saturday morning cartoon tone.

News:: Jackbox Party Pack 5 is coming later this year, still uses phones as controllers

Four years ago one of my favorite gameshow-centric video game series was resurrected. You Don't Know Jack, in the form of the Jackbox Party Pack, has been a huge hit due to its "phones as controllers" concept -- so much so that other studios have emulated it. And they're still trucking with at least one more game on the way.

Presented by a typically irreverent fake ad for "Binjpipe," a content service of some sort, Jackbox's Cookie Masterson introduces Jackbox Party Pack 5, which will presumably be coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and various entertainment devices like AppleTV or Amazon Fire TV at some point.

Jackbox Games says Party Pack 5 is coming "this fall."

During my weekend at PAX East, I was lucky enough to drop in on Square Enix and get the details on some changes and improvements coming to the western release of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age.

Dragon Quest XI is a big deal for Square Enix. Not only is it the first mainline console release for the series in thirteen years, it's the first mainline PC release for the series ever. On top of that, it's the series latest attempt to really make an impact in the west in as much time.

News:: Xbox to get PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' desert map in May

Strangely, we went from one early access version of PUBG on PC to three different versions of the game in the last few months. Now only did it exit early access, but its developers also released an Xbox One port, as well as a recent mobile iteration.

The thing is, not all versions have parity, but the studio is trying to change that. By way of a PAX East panel, Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene noted that although the PC and Xbox versions have different roadmaps, they're working on getting the desert map, Miramar, out on the latter.

Miramar will evidently be out in May; though a lot of fans aren't very happy with the map and outright skip it whenever possible.

News:: The King of Fighters '99 available now on PS4 and Xbox One

Hamster continue to roll out classic Neo Geo titles on modern platforms, with this week seeing the return of King of Fighters '99 to PS4 and Xbox One.

KoF '99 was SNK's attempt to take the fighting franchise in a new direction, following the conclusion of The Orochi Saga and the non-canon KoF '98: The Slugfest. The game introduces a new protagonist, the hilariously edgy K', and brings shadowy organisation NESTS into the spotlight as new antagonists.

What follows is an interminable storyline in which everyone is clone, and others are clones of clones and... well, it's just not very good. The game however, isn't bad. For the first time in the series, players pick a team of four characters, with one member acting as the "Striker", who can leap into battle as a Marvel-style assist.

The NESTS saga also introduces some cool new characters, such as Vanessa, Whip and Maxima. Xiangfei from Real Bout 2 also makes her KoF debut. Long time poster-boys Kyo and Iori were originally removed from the game entirely, in order to bring focus to the new characters, but were begrudgingly returned to the roster after complaints from fans at location tests.

King of Fighters '99 is a neat entry in the series. In many ways it's fair to suggest that you don't need this unless you're a completionist or if you already have KoF's '98 and '02, but its still a unique entry in the series. KoF '99 is available to download now Worldwide on Xbox One and in Japan on PS4.

News:: Donkey Kong Country with classic Kong designs is unsettling

There are very few people out there who haven't at least tried the original Donkey Kong Country. Nintendo and Rare have made it fairly easy over the years, with many copies of the SNES original circulating out there, as well as Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and eShop ports.

The designs of the heroic duo Donkey and Diddy were instant hits, spawning a multitude of other games, ports, and appearances -- but Spacepig22 managed to craft a quick look at what might have been. Using the models of the original Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr., they create an amazing mockup, but a slightly unsettling one all the same.
