News:: It's up to us to save the space whales in Blubber Busters

The proper way to save a space whale from space-whale disease? Why, hop inside the magnificent beast and melt the parasitic sickness away with a flamethrower, of course! Just as nature intended.

This is Blubber Busters, a PC action-platform game that I agree with Steven is fun to say out loud. I dearly hope it comes out of Kickstarter successful. The art is done well, the music by Chris Christodoulou (Risk of Rain) sounds great as always, and the setting is original. A win-win-win.

The team at Thar Be Monsters (again with the fun names!) is midway through the crowdfunding campaign for Blubber Busters with around $53,000 of its desired $340,000 goal raised, so it still has quite a ways left to go. Be sure to try the demo if you like the sound of this one.

News:: Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap continues to look lovely

I will seize any opportunity to bring up Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, a gorgeous remake of Wonder Boy III from Lizardcube, and today's developer chat with the original creator fits that simple criteria.

"In July we went to Kyoto to demo the game at the BitSummit festival and to meet with Ryuichi Nishizawa, creator of Wonder Boy, who helped us get this remake going. Until then all our communication were over e-mail and on Skype. So it was nice to finally meet (completely jet-lagged, in the sweaty Japanese summer). We showed him the latest build and asked him some questions about his work on the beloved series!" This video is the result, and in it, we learn about the project's origin.

There are a few Wonder Boy-related projects in the pipeline right now, but if I had to choose between them, this would undoubtedly be the one for me. I am obsessed with its aesthetic and animation.

News:: 20-minute 'Gears 4' prologue playthrough looks very familiar

Even the most dedicated Gears of War fan might need a refresher course ahead of the franchise's fourth numbered sequel. And that's precisely what the new video from the developers at The Coalition is all about. What's more, it's direct feed footage of the first section of the game, aptly titled "Prologue." So, you can see exactly what sorts of trouble you'll be getting into in a few weeks.

News:: Treyarch unleashes mod tools for Call of Duty: Black Ops III

While Call of Duty originally launched as a PC exclusive, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who associates the series with computers. Most people either know of the franchise from its Xbox 360 heyday or are familiar with the intrusive NFL cameos.

For a long time, Call of Duty hasn't really been worth pursuing on PC. The ports have been regularly shoddy and the games are locked out of modding. While I can't justify having cheating on servers (Call of Duty 4 is just loaded with hacks on PC), at least give players the chance to create levels! I guess that would cut into the extra $50 a year Activision gets from season passes.

Low and behold (and to my astonishment), Call of Duty: Black Ops III has received modding tools on PC. Now, players will be able to build new levels, tweak any assets, and generally alter the game how they see fit. This will be locked to custom lobbies and unranked servers, so you won't see any Prestige 10 hacking.

If you own the game on Steam, you just need to look under the tools tab to find the program. If you don't intend on creating anything, you won't need to grab the download. Any custom maps can be played by everyone, regardless of your curiosity in tinkering with game files. That sure sounds great.

News:: Endless Space 2 drifts onto Steam Early Access October 6

Amplitude Studios is returning for another foray into the stars above with Endless Space 2, its next 4X strategy game. Since the developer wants to make sure it's the best product it can be, the game comes to Steam Early Access on October 6.

I played it last month and was both overwhelmed and excited about managing civilizations through both war and prosperity (but probably mostly famine). There'll be four out of the eight planned factions and Amplitude will be paying close attention to feedback using the GAMES2GETHER program. All I know is I'm going to accidentally cause so much fictional death next week.

News:: My first life (or ten minutes) as an astronaut in Osiris: New Dawn

I don't have a ton of experience with survival games. I played The Forest last week for the first time in a couple years, barely remembering how to build a fire when I came upon an outpost that my friends had built with blood and sweat and wood and rope. My initial feeling was a punched-gut jealousy that I hadn't had the time to delve into a survival game and walk away with an intensely personal tale of how I scraped my way to success. So with the Steam Early Access launch of Fenix Fire Entertainment's Osiris: New Dawn today, I saw my chance and ran with it.

What follows is a short tale of a man being an idiot on a distant planet, making a series of poor decisions.

News:: Nintendo is using Splatoon to sell Paper Mario: Color Spash

One time I was at Disney's California Adventure, watching the World of Color light/water show. There was a giant Genie from Aladdin screaming "DO YOU LIKE BLUE?!" somewhat too enthusiastically, the excitement on his tongue sounding more like a knife being sharpened. That's the end of that memory. BUT while we're on the topic of colors, Miroku129 on NeoGAF spotted Nintendo trying to convince customers that if they liked third-person shooter/platformer Splatoon, then they should give the upcoming sidescrolling adventure Paper Mario: Color Splash a chance. Because they're both colorful, I guess?

That must be the basis of comparison for these two dissimilar games, because Nintendo makes a point of pointing it out twice. I can't argue with the memorable characters blurb, because I generally get a kick out of Paper Mario's dialogue and scenarios, nor can I deny that both games are on the Wii U (unless the NX is secretly going to be released next week??). All I know for sure is that it'll also make you "lol," because this is copy from the early 00s.

News:: NSFW: Haydee is all about butts, and of course there's a nudity mod

Haydee, if you haven't heard, is the ass-to-face indie puzzler that's been turning heads all week for its glorious robottocks(tm) and otherwise awful, unintuitive, punishing gameplay that rougelike-lovers crave. Former Dtoid editor and fellow perv Jim Sterling just posted a great little walkthrough that takes us through this odd title and its chains of love, embedded above. Another degenerate from my bosom, Patricia, agrees that the game has terrible breast physics. The now best-selling Steam title offers over 160 rooms to clear and all the butts and more. The thong is so far up the protagonist's ass that it leaves little to the imagination, but that didn't stop modders from taking off the rest.

News:: 'Here They Lie' trailer is a frightening glimpse at PlayStation VR

Here They Lie wowed us back at E3 with its virtual reality spin on existential horror. Now its latest trailer offers up plenty more reasons to get excited (or preemptively terrified) ahead of its October 13th release (right alongside PlayStation VR's debut). Developed by the team at Tangentleman, it puts you in the shoes of a man experiencing a smorgasbord of horrific imagery while pursuing a mysterious woman. And being a VR joint, you'll get to suffer right alongside him.

News:: Space-faring survival game Osiris: New Dawn tops the Steam charts

Survival games: folks still aren't tired of 'em, particularly when they let people venture off into space. That's when we start getting into "dream game" territory for certain players and the money comes pouring in. Unsurprisingly, the ambitious new PC game Osiris: New Dawn, having debuted on Steam Early Access today, is off to a strong start. It's currently the platform's number-one seller.

Osiris splits its time between exploring, crafting, and combat (first- or third-person), setting you out to "colonize worlds of incredible wonders and unforgiving dangers." Notably, it has multiplayer. That's a real big-ticket bullet point. "Work together with online players to build a prospering colony and together defend against threatening alien species, survive environmental phenomenon including meteor showers, and attacks from other online player colonies," reads the game's summary.

News:: No Man's Sky advertising under investigation

Nearly two months after its launch, No Man's Sky can't seem to catch a break. Eurogamer has confirmed that the United Kingdom's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is launching an investigation into No Man's Sky's advertising after receiving "several complaints" from disgruntled customers.

The primary investigation revolves around the game's Steam store page, which shows off some features not found in the final game. One of the complainants posted their list of grievances on Reddit, along with the ASA's response. The videos and marketing material on Steam's web store currently include things like structures and buildings that don't appear in the game, spaceships flying low to the ground and in formation, large-scale space combat, and animal size and behavior that doesn't match up with what players have observed.

The person who posted the complaint, Redditor AzzerUk, also posted the response they had received from the ASA:

"We will ensure the advertisers are made aware of any points relating to other marketing material under their control (such as the Hello Games YouTube channel and website)." They also said "The outcomes of ASA investigations are cross-applicable to other marketing making the same claims, so any decision reached in relation to the Steam page would apply to other advertising for No Man's Sky where the same (or materially similar) claims appear."

This makes it sound like the ASA will also be scrutinizing ads in places other than the Steam page, including the PlayStation Store. If they do find that the claims made on No Man's Sky's Steam page and elsewhere are fraudulent, the ASA has the authority to remove advertisements it believes don't meet its code of conduct, and prevent them from being displayed again. If a retailer refuses to comply, they can impose sanctions by asking search websites to remove a marketer's paid-for search ads.

No Man's Sky has been a magnet for controversy since it launched in early August. Gamers have been disappointed by bugs and crashes, and the reviews on the Steam page are overwhelmingly negative. It's also led to further examination of both Steam and Sony's digital return policies. Hopefully, all of this will cause people to reconsider the next time their cursor is hovering over the "pre-order" button, but I doubt it.

News:: 'No Man's Sky' is being investigated for false advertising

After No Man's Sky hit shelves in early August, complaints arose around bugs and oversights made by its small studio Hello Games. But as the weeks wore on, a new uproar struck out at the differences between concept videos and the released game, which noticeably lacks many features promised in its early promotional material. Now the UK-based Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is launching an investigation into those disparities.

News:: Doom soundtrack now officially available

Ever since the release of Doom back in May, fans have been clamoring for an official soundtrack release. Bethesda was silent on the matter and, oddly, didn't even have a digital version for purchase. People just wanted to rip and tear at the gym!

As of this morning, you are now able to purchase the Doom OST from iTunes and Google Play; the OST is also on Spotify for streaming. My favorite track from the game is "BFG Division," but mostly because I heard that for 80 percent of the encounters. I think my game had a problem with music streaming.

News:: Red Flags is a worthy successor to the Cards Against Humanity throne

One of the weirdest moments of PAX West 2016 for me (and that's a long list, just ask Myles) was when I was flagged down on the show floor to give the card game Red Flags a shot. That in itself isn't weird; when you have a yellow media badge, folks really want you to come see their thing, especially on the lower-budget sixth floor. The game itself wasn't all that weird either. You are assembling the personality traits of a hypothetical long-term romantic partner -- two positive aspects followed by a wacky red flag, something like "Starts every sentence with 'Actually'" or "Always dresses like a clown."

No, the weird part was my game partners. There was a representative on-hand from Skybound Entertainment to demo the game, but in terms of PAX attendees, it was me and a mother and son duo. Before that day, before a middle-aged woman essentially pieced together an ideal mate for her adult son right in front of me, I didn't know my skin could even crawl like that.

Red Flags doesn't belong on a convention floor, nor does it belong amongst families. It belongs with a group of smarmy 20-somethings, most of them inebriated, huddled around a dorm room desk. That scenario may not be possible for everyone, but as long as you get the important part (being drunk) nailed down, you should be just fine.
