News:: German gamers, the time has come: Red Faction is now legal in Deutschland

Germany has a long history of banning violent video games from sale. Doom had been outlawed until 2011 (which is just insane) and Wolfenstein was barred because of its use of Nazi imagery. Fallout wasn't allowed until this year, as well. Despite most countries allowing freedom of expression from creative works, Germany didn't want any of that.

Now, though, Red Faction is finally legally available in Deutschland. Nordic games announced that the game is no longer on the list of titles deemed "damaging" to the country's youth. One down, several hundred to go.

Publishing director Jans Binsmaier stated that the company went through numerous discussions and had to utilize power forms of persuasion to have the game removed from Germany's blacklist. "At THQ Nordic, we were aware of the implications of this momentous decision, and needed to adopt a bold approach," Binsmaier said.

I'm happy that the game is going to finally be available to our gaming friends overseas. There was no mention of any censorship being placed on the game, similar to how Wolfenstein: The New Order changed Nazis to "The Regime" and removed any symbolism from World War II.

News:: Last chance deals on Civilization VI and Battlefield 1 before release

Going live in a few hours are two of the biggest titles of the year in two completely different genres: EA/DICE's Battlefield 1 and 2K/Firaxis' Civilization VI. Both games are looking good (thus far) in the reviews and preview departments. We suspect most hardcore fans have probably already finished pre-loading and are simply waiting for the clock to strike zero.

If you're still on the fence and you're on the hunt for last-minute savings before release on either Battlefield 1 or Civilization VI, there are still three deals available -- a far cry from a month or two ago when we had multiple offers from multiple retailers.

Battlefield 1

Civilization VI

The PC deals are courtesy of GMG and we've confirmed that it is sending out keys immediately after purchase for both titles. Pricing in UK/EU for Civilization VI is £39.99 / €47,99 for the Standard, and £55.99 / €63,99 for the Deluxe. For Battlefield 1, prices are £38.99 / €48.99.

For the Xbox One copy of Battlefield 1, just make sure you select the digital copy before adding to cart -- if you order before midnight, you'll still receive the $10 gift card bonus. (You can also pick physical edition but at this point if you want to play at midnight, you may as well go digital.)

Pre-Order Price Movement

Both titles have had their pre-order discounts shaved in recent months. For example, Civilization VI was 24% about three weeks ago. Then the discount disappeared for about a week until it returned at 20% off. Now the discount is only 15% off. Previously we are usually pretty confident that a deal will last through its release week, particularly for PC digital titles. But lately this hasn't been the case for certain games from select publishers -- and Civilization VI is one such title.

On the Battlefield 1 side, the same situation also applies. The biggest discount during pre-order phase was 26% off as early as this month. Then the deal got reduced to 23% off, and is now finally a "mere" 20% off.

If you're not interested in playing anywhere near day one, you can ignore all the price movement we mentioned above and simply wait one to two months for attractive discounts to reappear -- after all, the holiday seasons are quickly approaching. Even if Steam/Origin copies won't be on sale, you can be sure retailers will be discounting the "physical" copies to draw eyeballs.

For those wanting to play tonight or in the near future, we think the deals above are as good as it'll get from a legitimate retailer.

News:: Star Trek: Bridge Crew pushed to 2017

This one stings. Ubisoft is holding back Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Red Storm Entertainment's VR-exclusive space sim, until March 14, 2017. Previously, it was scheduled for a late November release for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and PlayStation VR. I know folks who just picked up the latter device that were looking forward to it as a launch-window game, so I'm sorry I have to dash those dreams.

Bridge Crew doesn't show especially well in videos even by VR standards, but I have it on good authority that it can be a total riot -- figuratively and maybe even literally -- with the right group of people.

News:: Orwell is an episodic game about online mass surveillance

People close to me would know that I pay far too much attention to news and politics for my own good, despite it being quite a soul-crushing affair more often than not. Of course, this does mean that I've become quite interested in the games and medias that try to discuss or tackle subjects relating to news and current events.

Developed by Osmotic Studios, Orwell is an episodic game that very clearly takes inspiration from current events, such as the leaking of several documents relating to online mass surveillance by Edward Snowden, as well as other politically-motivated games like Papers, Please. In it, you’ll play as a surveillance operative who utilises a classified piece of software commissioned by The Nation in order to spy on the online activities of people who are deemed to be threats.

The first episode of Orwell is currently available on Steam as a free demo, although access to the full season will cost $10 USD. New episodes will be released on a weekly basis until the 17th of November, meaning that there will be five in total. According to the publisher, Surprise Attack Games, each episode will take approximately one hour to complete.

Feel free to check out the trailer below:

News:: Review in Progress: Civilization VI

Many empires have risen and fallen throughout the history of mankind. What once stands as a towering achievement to human ingenuity and engineering soon becomes rubble, dust, and bones. The cycle repeats and history moves on; nothing demonstrates that formula so well as Civilization does with each new game.

I mentioned in my preview article that Civilization VI feels like a new beginning for the series. I still believe that is true, but I can’t say the final product hasn’t left me a tiny bit disappointed. This doesn’t have to do with how the game performs or even the changes made to the general design; it has to do with the exclusion of scenarios and a lackluster menu.

News:: How To Make Half-Smoke Chili And Take A Decade Off Your Life

This week’s episode of Foodspin takes us to the fabled (and somewhat controversial) Ben’s Chili Bowl, which has been an institution here in Washington, D.C. for nearly 60 years. There, Burneko and I discover the wonders of the Ben’s half-smoke, which is a big fucking sausage smothered in chili and onions. No wonder my nipples are erect for most of the episode.

News:: Valve's Orange Box is backward compatible on Xbox One

The Orange Box was a special release back in 2007. Hell, it still is to this day. Valve's compilation disc brought Portal, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, and Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode Two to consoles, and good lord that's a lot of amazing video games in one sentence. As of this week, the Xbox 360 version of The Orange Box is now compatible with Xbox One through backward compatibility.

Other additions to the playable-on-Xbox-One list include Xbox Live Arcade titles Joe Danger 2: The Movie (Hello Games wasn't always synonymous with No Man's Sky) and Galaga Legions, a modern take on the arcade staple in a similar vein as Pac-Man: Championship Edition. Never did play that one!

Needless to say, I think it's about time we go back to Ravenholm.

News:: Samsung is clearly unimpressed with a GTA mod that mocks the Galaxy Note 7

It's been a rough couple of months for Samsung. The company's latest flagship phone, the Galaxy Note 7, has been subject to two separate recalls before being discontinued entirely due to its apparent ability to explode without warning. Not only that, but mod makers have taken to poking fun at the entire situation by adding weaponised Galaxy Note 7 phones to the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V.

Unfortunately, it looks like the American branch of the tech giant isn't very impressed with the GTA V mod. According to The Verge, Samsung has recently filed a DMCA takedown request against a YouTube video that showcased it.

News:: Palmer Watch: Day 27

It’s been 27 days since Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus VR and former Facebook golden child, has been seen or heard from publicly. On September 23, Luckey issued this statement on his funding of and involvement in Nimble America, a pro-Trump, anti-Hillary Clinton political advocacy group with the stated mission of proving “shitposting is powerful and meme magic is real.” Palmer said he donated $10,000 to the group because he “thought the organization had fresh ideas on how to communicate with young voters” but said his actions do not represent Oculus, the company Facebook bought for $2 billion in 2014. He also said he planned to vote for libertarian candidate Gary Johnson.

News:: Nintendo Download: The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

I know we're still recovering from the NX (Nintendo Switch!) news, but here we are with a Nintendo Download episode with a bunch of old games.

On the Wii U you'll find Retro Road Rumble, Super Destronaut 2: Go Duck Yourself, Mr. Pumpkin Adventure, Shooting Range by Thornbury Software, Pirate Pop Plus, SteamWorld Heist, and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. That's one of the most interesting collection of games I've typed to say the least, and I kind of chucked enough at "Go Duck Yourself" enough to look it up on Nintendo.com, and I got a 404. Ha, nice.

On 3DS you'll be able to pick up Fairune 2 and Breath of Fire. Yes that one, for the SNES by way of Virtual Console.

News:: Red Dead Redemption 2 teaser teases and not much else

Did you blink? The follow up to one of the best games of 2010, if not the decade, showed little beyond environments in its first trailer. Reminiscent of the first Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer which didn't explicitly tell us much, this trailer is also surely full of hints and designed to stir up rumors and conversation.

I see canoes, trains, various animals, wagons, and what appears to the be the seven main characters seen in the promotional art work thus far. We still don't know anything about those characters, the story, setting, online aspect or much of anything yet. We'll have to wait for the next trailer. I think we're going to look back on this day and think of how Nintendo stole the thunder.

News:: Skyrim, NBA 2K and new Mario are coming to Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch looks like an impressive piece of hardware capable of going from the living room to mobile with the swipe of a hand, but it's nothing without a lineup of acclaimed, high-quality games and fresh experiences. In the Switch's debut teaser trailer, we got a glimpse at some of the software hitting Nintendo's new hardware, including a new 3D Mario game, a new version of Splatoon (look at those hairstyles) and a new Mario Kart featuring King Boo and two item slots. Of course we saw The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as well, but it was the third-party support that really stood out.

News:: Nintendo finally reveals NX details, it's called the 'Nintendo Switch'

Much like Morpheus rose from the ashes to become PSVR, or Dolphin became GameCube, the NX has become the "Nintendo Switch."

Nintendo kicked off their promised announcement this morning by showing its capabilities, like "switching" to a game from your home, on a plane, and on a controller, and a Switch tablet. Zelda was shown of course, as was Skyrim, NBA 2K, what seems to be a new 3D Mario game, and Mario Kart 8.

Most of the leaks were correct -- you can slide out controllers from the tablet, and play games at home or on the go. At home it will rest on a "Nintendo Switch Dock," which connects to the TV. Then you can lift it out to "transition to portable mode," with a "bright high-definition display," and utilize the "detachable Joy-Con controllers" (which can be used by one person with one in "each hand," by two players with one each, or "numerous people." A "Nintendo Switch Pro Controller" is mentioned (yuck, another thing to buy if Wii U Pro Controllers don't work), and you can bring Switch systems together for local multiplayer (cool).

It looks neat, but a lot of the stuff shown so far has been ports (even ports of Nintendo's own existing Wii U lineup) -- ether way, the Wii U seems to be completely phased out based on this trailer. You can read the full list of partners below.

News:: Review: Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel

Souls DLC is a risk by design.

The core games are crafted around a multitude of different concepts bound by a cohesive theme that just comes together by the time you reach the finish line. So by adding on extra optional quests months down the road, there's a chance that anything bite-sized enough to warrant a smaller price tag will flow strangely when it's ratcheted on in a Frankenstein-like fashion.

Artorias of the Abyss for the original Dark Souls was the pinnacle of actually "adding on" to what its foundation already had. It still hasn't been topped.

News:: 'Switch' is Nintendo's next game console

it's been almost a year and a half since Nintendo announced the NX, and now the gaming giant has finally dropped the codename and secrecy in favor of something more official: Switch. Like the countless rumors previously asserted, it's indeed a hybrid mobile and home console with a tablet element and detachable controllers.

In the trailer, we see those controllers attached to a central unit of some sort, behaving like a single game controller, attached to the side of an attractive and slim tablet, and used independently like two miniature gamepads. Oh, and that tablet has a kickstand.
