News:: Looks like Super Mario Run will require a persistent connection

I knew there had to be a catch to Super Mario Run. While we originally thought that was going to be microtransactions, it looks like the game will require an online connection at all times. That shouldn't be the biggest issue for a mobile phone, but there could be instances where you're without a network (like in NYC, which the trailer prominently features). This online connection is required for security purposes, which is part of the reason why the game is coming to iOS first.

Speaking with Mashable, Shigeru Miyamoto said, "for consumers who are purchasing the game, we want to make sure that we're able to offer it to them in a way that the software is secure, and that they're able to play it in a stable environment."

Miyamoto then goes on to state that, due to the amount of countries the game is launching in, they wanted to make sure each service was as secure as possible. I think I'm starting to see what the reasoning is. If Nintendo were to release this as a regular app, the fear is that someone would jailbreak it and spread the thing around the net. By restricting access to the game via network connection, there won't be any possible way to make a workaround (which sounds more like a challenge than a reality).

There were some talks about bringing the main game, "World Tour" mode, as a standalone experience, but the extra game modes complicated matters. As Miyamoto mentions, "the challenge is when that's operating in a standalone mode, it actually complicates the connection back to the Toad Rally and Kingdom modes. And because those two modes are relying on the network save, we had to integrate the World Tour mode as well."

I don't know what to make of this. Nintendo has a sure thing with Mario on any platform, so to bring up a strange and archaic limitation is just asking for trouble. A lot of kids don't understand network issues and most gamers who pay for their content would like to access it at any moment. If I have to download something, why can't I just play it?

This isn't some MMO that relies on other players for interaction or even an online multiplayer experience, but a one-payment mobile app with a full campaign. Just let me play it whenever I can, instead of crippling me on train rides (where I'll probably play this the most).

News:: EA secures flooded adventure Sea of Solitude

It took me a second to recall Sea of Solitude, but then it came rushing back once I saw those ultra-wide gifs again. This is that game with the flooded city (there have been a few those!) in which overly lonely humans turn into monsters. As it happens, the protagonist, Kay, already is one.

"On her search to change, she soon finds out that her biggest enemies are not the huge monsters that she meets on her way through the Sea of Solitude, but something way more dangerous."

We admittedly haven't seen much of the project as of late, but the team has been busy. Today's news: Electronic Arts has taken the title on and will work with developer Jo-Mei "throughout the process of developing, publishing, and bringing this incredibly creative story to all of you."

"Like Fe, our first EA Originals title, Sea of Solitude captures the essence of the games we want players to discover through EA Originals," said EA Worldwide Studios executive vice president Patrick Söderlund in the announcement post. "We are celebrating the passion and talent of the amazing creators in our industry, and enabling them to bring unique and memorable stories to the world."

News:: Gigantic hits open beta at last on Xbox One and Windows 10

Thanks in large part to its vibrant art direction, Gigantic was a real attention-grabber when it first hit the scene. But how many of you ever bothered to sign up for and play the beta? Y'know, I never did!

That process is easier now as the third-person MOBA enters open beta on Xbox One (under the Preview Program label) and Windows 10. This is a free-to-play release, available in North America and Europe with cross-play between platforms, however there's also an optional paid version as well.

The Founder's Pack is $40, granting access to 16 heroes now, four more later in the beta, and skins. According to Perfect World, it'll "follow on Arc (PC Windows) at a later date."

If the free version is sufficient for you, expect to choose between six heroes on a weekly rotation and play on three maps (Siren's Stand, Ghost Reef, and Sanctum Falls). It's been a long road for Gigantic, and while it has a ways to go yet, this week's open beta is a significant milestone for Motiga.

News:: See how Elite Dangerous is shaping up on PS4 ahead of its Q2 2017 launch

It's been slow going for PlayStation 4 owners waiting on Elite Dangerous. Xbox One and especially PC players are well acquainted with Frontier Developments' sprawling space sim by now, and as much as a surprise "It's out real soon!" announcement would've hit the spot after all this time, that's not the case. But we do have a release window for the slow-and-steady PS4 port, and it's Q2 2017.

Along with this accompanying trailer, the studio has spoken a bit about what's new for the PS4 version. There will be touchpad navigation for the map, four "hotkeys" that you can assign to the touchpad, and optional "motion-based headlook controls" for combat. Nothing too compelling, but then, I wouldn't expect anything substantially exclusive or different from the existing versions.

Arguably more useful than all of those minor features, there's also PlayStation 4 Pro support planned for Elite Dangerous, which will leverage the console for "enhanced performance," whatever that entails.

I've found the idea of Elite simultaneously interesting and intimidating, which has kept me away, but it sure looks cool. And for a game like this that sees lots of updates, there's something to be said for waiting until the time is right. (Is it?) I suppose we'll have to wait and see for the PS4 port.

News:: Shadow Warrior 2's new DLC is free, and it gets right to the point

Shadow Warrior 2 is a game that exists for two reasons: To tell dick jokes, and to assault the screen with an endless flurry of violence and viscera. Its newest add-on looks to trim all the fat from that formula, boiling it down to just the essentials.

Today, developer Flying Wild Hog released The Way of the Wang, a free add-on to Shadow Warrior 2. It's an arena-based trials thing that's nothing but combat and commentary. There are seven missions, and the Fist of Gozu weapon is waiting for anyone who completes them all.

Accompanying the DLC is a sale on Shadow Warrior 2. It's 25 percent off through the weekend, down to $30 from it's regular $40 price point.

The video that Flying Wild Hog made to showcase The Way of the Wang tells you all you need to know. Those guys were really into the procedural gore when we visited their studio in October; it probably shouldn't come as a surprise that there's a boatload of it in this add-on.

News:: Destiny's development team just got a little bigger

It takes a lot to make a stew. Bungie, the main developer behind Destiny, hasn't been the only developer behind Destiny for a while now. Last year, High Moon Studios (the team who made Transformers) joined the effort. Now, a third developer has joined the effort.

In a post on Facebook, Vicarious Visions revealed that it is now dedicated to helping expand the Destiny universe. This isn't Vicarious Vision's only project, though; it's also currently working on the just-announced Crash Bandicoot remake.

It makes sense that High Moon and Vicarious Visions have been pegged to assist Bungie. While Bungie isn't owned by Activision, the other two developers are. The publisher moving its resources around to contribute to one of its biggest money-makers seems natural.

Also, this isn't the first time we're hearing about Vicarious Visions contributing to Destiny. In September, details about this transition leaked. That report is confirmed by today's news. The Destiny machine continues to grow and it doesn't seem like it'll slow down anytime soon.

News:: Shadowrun is now on Xbox One via backward compatibility

Shadowrun was a curious case of a shooter with impressive ideas that had a half-baked execution. I remember being ecstatic that there was finally a PC and Xbox 360 cross-play title, but the results were that PC users ended up getting the short end of the stick. Aside from higher resolutions, the controls had heavy mouse acceleration and auto-aim to keep things in line with console players. It felt pretty damn sluggish and had some sketchy performance (at launch, at least).

I've also never been a fan of the lack of a campaign mode. I know multiplayer was the main intention, but all of those cool powers felt wasted in a typical deathmatch. The map design was severely lacking and the game basically played like a slowed-down Team Fortress. It wasn't a lot of fun, but having a campaign could have put those special abilities to use.

The game has earned a bit of a cult following over the years, however, and it looks like those people won't need to hold onto their 360s any longer. Announced through Twitter, Shadowrun is now playable on Xbox one via backward compatibility. This game also comes along with Space Ark and Shotest Shogi, but I've never heard of those games.

News:: Battlefield 1 gets a free map and a grenade crossbow this month

You don't need that pesky Premium Pass to claim Giant's Shadow in Battlefield 1. The new multiplayer map, ever so briefly teased in this video, will be available to all as a free download on December 20, 2016. (And a week ahead, on December 13, for players who pre-ordered or own the Pass. Naturally.)

The map represents the Battle of the Selle, and I am already dreading its armored train. That said, there's a new toy that'll help shut the vile machine down: a grenade crossbow.

Support class players will be able to wield this "unique contraption" to "silently fire two grenades of either the Fragmentation or High Explosive variety." I prefer the Medic role, but I'll need to give that a go.

News:: PewDiePie will delete channel and start from scratch tomorrow

YouTube's most successful video personality will delete his channel tomorrow and, likely, start a new one.

Mr. DiePie has picked up 600,000 new followers since last week, putting him at 50 million, the number he said he needed to hit before he would delete the YouTube channel that has ballooned his net worth to nearly $80 million.

The threat worked as a publicity stunt. "DELETING MY CHANNEL AT 50 MILLION." was his most-viewed video in four months. And the subscribers poured in, hitting his target. If Mr. DiePie follows up on his promise to delete his channel tomorrow at 5PM GMT (morning in the USA), fans will likely flock to his new channel. While he will be sacrificing raw numbers -- and trickling monetization on years of past videos -- he also already has more money than any average person would know what to do with, and will create a new channel that will still be incredibly profitable. The move seems like a mix of a cry for help, a protest against YouTube, and a publicity stunt. Which, hey, it worked.

News:: The Ubisoft and Vivendi drama heats up a little more

The fears of many people who follow the games industry might become a reality as Vivendi Entertainment now owns 25 percent of Ubisoft. As we reported a few months ago, once Vivendi acquires 30 percent of the company, it will be required by French law to make a takeover bid.

Vivendi has issued a statement claiming it has no intention of performing a takeover. According to Vivendi, its pursuit of even more stake in Ubisoft depends entirely on "market conditions."

Earlier this year, Vivendi was successful in taking over control of mobile developer Gameloft. This rings particularly ominous because Gameloft was created by the same family that founded Ubisoft. As for Vivendi's reasons behind buying more stock, it has previously stated the move "is part of a strategic vision of operational convergence between Vivendi's content and platform and Ubisoft's productions in the field of video games."

Ubisoft hasn't remained quiet on the situation, though. Speaking to GameSpot, a spokesperson for Ubisoft stated, "This is another indication that Vivendi is continuing its ill-advised and value-destructive approach of attempting to take creeping control of companies like Ubisoft."

News:: Modern Warfare Remastered lands free maps and modes next week

Seeing map names like Bloc, Countdown, Pipeline, Showdown, Strike, and Wet Work brings back fond but perhaps overly-competitive memories of late nights spent with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

On December 13, Modern Warfare Remastered will get those six aforementioned maps, plus the Hardpoint and Gun Game modes introduced in later series entries. That's all coming for free, thankfully. Raven Software is also planning a chilly holiday makeover for Crash in time for Christmas.

News:: New Chinese law governs video game loot boxes

China has just passed a new regulation pertaining to video games with microtransactions (specifically, loot boxes), and it's a pretty interesting law that could eventually find its way overseas.

As translated by NeoGAF user chillybright, this law will begin enforcement on May 1, 2017, and will govern loot boxes, which are basically a form of gambling. Publishers will be required to give players information about them upfront, including draw, quantity, content, names, and properties. In other words, they need to tell you what percentage chance you have to actually get this blind box item.

Given my general distaste for the practice of blind boxes (thankfully many games are just cosmetic), this is a rather refreshing law. You can extrapolate the wording for yourself below.

News:: Deal: GameStop has used and refurb Wii systems starting at only $39.99

Rather than leaping forward into the future of gaming for the holidays, why not take on a blast from the past with the original Nintendo Wii on sale for $40? That's what GameStop is signaling today at least with an online-only drop to $39.99 for a refurbished black Nintendo Wii + Motion Plus controller.

The price is actually really good at GameStop and $10 cheaper than worse-condition pre-owned Wii units selling for $49.99 a pop. This is an online-only offer, but funny enough if you want to pick up in store you'll have to add $30 to the cost for the exact same product with a price of $69.99.

We've also noticed two other notable Wii bundles at GameStop for $49.99. The Red version is available for sale for $49.99 and is pictured with a Motion Plus controller though we do not see the description on the page specifically saying you'll get one, so YMMV. The pre-owned Nintendo Wii for $49.99 is also $10 more and comes with only a standard Wii remote, however that is available for store pickup.

GameStop started aggressively selling off old Nintendo Wii consoles last week in its Cyber Week sale. This must be what's left in its online warehouses. No expiration date is noted so I think once supplies are gone, they're gone for the near future (until GameStop stocks up enough for a clearance sale).

News:: Hey uh, Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash actually looks pretty fun

Think of the perfect steak, one from your favorite restaurant. Perhaps it's momma's homecookin' or even your own hand-crafted meaty heaven. Then think how tasty that juicy, warm, medium-well steak made just the way you like it tastes. Would you still eat it if it came in the shape of an anime girl wrapped in a bikini on a pink plate while J-pop plays overhead? If the answer is yes, then you might find that there appears to be decent gameplay hidden under Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash's kawaii exterior. And oh yeah never mind that rubber duck spraying water on a girl's butt.

The debut trailer for Peach Beach Splash shows some of its third-person water gun shooting gameplay, where the goal is to get the opposing team all wet, naturally. Senran Kagura and Japanese game fans will need little convincing, so I'm speaking to those who don't know what this is or are morbidly curious just how anime anime has become when I say try to stomach the first 20 seconds or so and just let go of preconceived notions.

Is it dumb? Of course it is. Are there some dudes already jacking it to this video? Absolutely. Nevertheless, the Vanquish-style sliding and non-standard get-'em-all-wet objective should interest shooter fans at least on some level.

News:: Super Mario Run will have no microtransactions, only a buyout option

Nintendo got into the smartphone game hella late, but not too late, it seems, as there's already a lot of buzz for their upcoming first real mobile title (Miitomo doesn't really count), Super Mario Run.

Based on Eurogamer's findings, it actually sounds pretty good too, as there will not be any microtransactions present -- just a $10 buyout option to get everything. It'll sport 24 levels at launch (the first four will be free), and it'll have leaderboard support, a "Toad Rally" time trial-like mode (with twists on levels), a "Kingdom Builder" hub (featuring Toads, Yoshi, and Luigi), and an emphasis on "style" to encourage multiple runs. Some of this is briefly touched upon in the footage below that aired last night on Jimmy Fallon.

In short, it's not exactly "endless," so the game isn't designed to get you to spend money to reach some sort of hopeless goal. Instead, the hook seems to be the hub world, which will take you some time to build up, and bragging rights over friends as winning a challenge will net you more Toad residents.

If sales aren't up to par my guess is they'll add plenty of microtransactions (called IAP on mobile) later, and tie them into the hub that players have spent hours grooming and getting attached to. But for now, I like the idea of releasing an actual, real game without energy, timers, and other nonsense.

News:: Bully gets a 10th anniversary re-release on mobile

Rockstar is continuing its trend of mobile re-releases by announcing that Bully: Anniversary Edition is now available on Android and iOS. This release contains all of the extra features from the Wii, Xbox 360, and PC release of the game, so players who have only ever played the original should be in for a treat. The game is listed for $6.99 on the Google Play store and has yet to be updated to the Apple Store.

The wording on this release is a little unclear, but I don't believe any new content is being added. The graphics have been redone and there are touch controls, but the exclamation of new "Friend Challenges" kind of fits in with the stuff included in the Scholarship Edition. The Scholarship Edition of the game included extra classes, eight new missions, additional characters, and two player mini-games, so I'm not sure if the "Friend Challenges" are anything different.

Odds are you've played a game called "werewolf" or "mafia" once in your life. The rules are simple -- one or more people are an "imposter" of sorts, among a group of normal players who are attempting to figure out said imposter. At the end everyone makes an accusation, and goes "Oh no, I can't believe it was/wasn't you!" Depending on your group it's either droll and drawn out, or a heated battle of wits.

That's Werewolves Within in a nutshell. But in VR. And $30.

News:: First third-party Nintendo Switch exclusive stars boy with Asperger's syndrome

The Nintendo Switch has its first third-party exclusive: Seasons of Heaven by France-based AnyArt Productions, who is known for indie titles such as Seasons of Heaven. I started to write Story of Seasons three different times before having to check the name again. This project is based on a book of the same name, featuring a young boy diagnosed with Asperger's named Yann and his French bulldog Ani.

While no gameplay details are known yet, it looks like it will be an artistic, emotionally-driven story. Said story "centres on a group of survivors in a post-civilization world." As if there aren't enough post-civilization stories and dog companions in games already. How about some love for us cat people? People who like cats I mean, not that there's anything wrong with being a human-cat hybrid.

Screenshots show the young Yann in comfy shorts venturing through a forest with a little puppy dog by his side. Over/under for sad dog deaths is currently sitting at one. Place your bets.

Glowing glyphs, a very tall man-made tower off in the distance, and an Easter Island Moai statue shooting blue lasers from its eyes suggest puzzles and mystery to uncover.

Alpha testers will have the rare opportunity to give direct feedback on the game to help them improve the experience, but a non-disclosure agreement will be necessary.

As if Sean Bean doesn't already joke about dying in nearly every one of his films, he makes a crack about being "replaced" in the next Civilization, creating a canon death for his character, the narrator. It's heartbreaking!

More triumphantly, you can get a little behind the scenes look at this process, in which he low key says it's easier than making films because you have the lines in front of you. Oh, and the brief footage of the chorus that performs live music? Wonderful.

News:: Review: Surgeon Simulator: Experience Reality

Playing the PC version of Surgeon Simulator, Bossa Studios' gory slapstick operation game, was like being in charge of a mechanized shell of a human whose arm, hand, and individual fingers were each run by tiny mech pilots. The controls were meant to be a bit off, leading to funny but not always fun scenarios where you'd fumble about with dangerous tools around a deeply unlucky patient.

I enjoyed the game at the time, back in 2013, but didn't pay much attention to any of the later updates or ports to other platforms. That said, I was pretty into the idea of returning to Surgeon Sim in virtual reality with much different controls. And different they are, but not in the way you'd expect.

News:: Killing children in 'What Remains of Edith Finch'

Young Calvin Finch sits on a swing perched atop a steep seaside cliff while the afternoon sun warms the waves, grass and trees. Calvin's left leg is in a cast, but he easily swings his feet back and forth, pushing higher and higher over the cliffside. He wants to do a full circle on the swing set; he knows it's possible if he tries hard enough. Back and forth, back and forth. Cast kicking, he climbs higher, parallel to the ground and shooting back down, swinging his legs even harder. And then, with a final determined kick, he does it.

Calvin flies around and around, branches of the tree above him scratching his face and body, leaves and twigs falling to the ground. Suddenly, on the last high-velocity rotation, Calvin lets go of the chains, and his body soars over the cliff, cast and all. For a moment, he flies above the water, toward the setting sun. And then, he's dead.

News:: Dress up time! Give Aqua cute outfits in Kingdom Hearts 2.8

Sometime I feel stressed with all things I have going on in my life and clearing games from my backlog can occasionally feel like self-imposed work, especially when I don't particularly enjoy a game but am playing it to completion out of obligation to myself. Watching anything Kingdom Hearts related reminds me I'm alive and that games are meant to be fun. This final trailer for Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue is no different, instantly making me grin from ear to ear.

The trailer shows Aqua taking on various bosses, cutting through dark shrubbery, and most importantly dressing up using various items such as wings, cute cat ears, or Minnie Mouse's polka dot bow. The options listed there in Japanese are head, arms, back, pattern, and color. While Sora, Donald, and Goofy got several world-specific designs and Sora's outfit changed slightly when using drive form in Kingdom Hearts 2, this will be the first time we'll actively be able to customize a characters appearance in the series. Although you won't be able to do much to her base outfit, I am ready to start collecting items. I wonder if they'll expand on this in KHIII. No one's got a problem with me liking to dress up girls in games do they? Good.

Looking at the map while Aqua is grinding and dodging a Darkside's attacks shows a narrow path, suggesting a unique fight where at least part of the battle will occur while skating down at high speed. Inventive boss fights have always been a highlight of the series and it appears that will continue here.
