News:: Garage Hero's productions are Power Rangers for older viewers done right

If you were to ask me about a genre that lacks variety, my answer will always be tokusatsu (live-action special effects). During the '70s and '80s, there used to be a huge offering of titles, but their numbers started to decline as Japan started to face economic issues. Of course, one of the series that remain alive to this day is Super Sentai, the franchise that's adapted into Power Rangers.

Since modern toku productions consist of at least four yearly franchises, the genre doesn't have enough stuff for those who're looking for a ton of options. The problem with this scenario is that if a person isn't impressed with any of the programs that air during that year, then they have to wait until the next one to see if something catches their eye.

As tokusatsu production companies shy away from bringing new heroes to the mix, one man took a stand and decided to create the types of shows he wants to see. This resulted in the creation of Garage Hero, an independent team in Tokyo that consists of foreigners and Japanese residents. The thing that makes them special is that their creations are perfect for people who grew up with Power Rangers and those who love campy titles.

News:: Hell yeah, Rocket League added fidget spinner wheels

Fidget spinners are a hot commodity right now, used only be the coolest of kids and derided by the "haters" of the world. In the interest of disclosure, I am extremely pro-fidget spinner which is why the newest Rocket League development has me excited. Psyonix added fidget spinners to the game.

One of the items that can be obtained in the newest Overdrive Crate (the game's system of cosmetic microtransactions) is a set of fidget spinner wheels called "FGSP." They're exotic tier, meaning that they're the second most rare items available. In even more rare instances, these wheels drop as painted variants. That's right, there's a whole set to collect, kids.

Other items are less exciting, even if they're technically the focus. There aren't any Black Market decals in this crate, as Psyonix has opted to replace them with goal explosions. There's stuff like fireworks and "hellfire," both of which look kind of neat. But, they're no fidget spinners and that's why they don't get their own post.

News:: The Switch isn't powerful enough to render all of A Plague Tale's rats

A Plague Tale: Innocence might be one of those games that slipped past your radar at E3. It's about trying not to get killed by disease-carrying rats in the Kingdom of France in 1349. Asobo Studio's game looks promising, but Nintendo Switch owners won't get the chance to find out, as it won't be making its way over to the hybrid console.

News:: RONIN developer looking for beta testers for new game

In a Twitter post yesterday Tomasz Wacławek, the lead designer of the indie stealth game RONIN, announced that his studio teedoubleu were taking applications for beta testers for their new game Immortal Planet. The "isometric souls game" is described by the developers as taking place in the "crumbling remains of a society of immortals trapped in endless cycles of rebirth."

The game looks cool and despite a few flaws with RONIN, I ended up enjoying my time with it so I'm looking forward to what else Wacławek and his team can do.

No date has been given for when applications are due or when the beta will be.

News:: Nintendo not entering PC market anytime soon

News:: What games did you get during Steam's Summer Sale?

In a cruel twist of fate, Steam's annual Summer Sale started almost exactly one week after I bit the bullet and built my first gaming PC rig. Despite owning more than 300 games on Steam and spending more money than I should on the build, I couldn't resist splurging on a few games. What good is a shiny (and fast) new computer if you don't have new games to play?

I grabbed Doom because: a) I wanted to play it on Ultra settings and b) Doom is so bloody brilliant that I don't mind having it on multiple platforms, as well as Max Payne 3 because I keep watching Man on Fire whenever it's on TV.

In addition to those two, I snagged Hollow KnightBurnout Paradise, and Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor on the cheap. I've had my eye on Hollow Knight for a while, and everyone seems to love Burnout, so I figured it's high time to check them out. Oh, and speaking of finally getting around to playing games. I bought Half-Life 2 during the sale. I've never played it all the way through. Since I'm a "PC gamer" now, I feel like I have to play it right away.

What games did you buy during Steam's Summer Sale? Did you blow through an entire paycheck? Or were you a bit more thrifty? Share your game hauls, hidden gems, and regretful purchases with me in the comments below.

News:: Here are four new clips of The Evil Within 2

Bethesda's The Evil Within 2 reveal at E3 went about as smoothly as anyone could hope for. There was a well-produced trailer, a description of the plot, and a release date. Probably most important, there was a thirst from fans for the sequel to improve where its predecessor faltered. The Evil Within was a flawed game, but also one that showed a lot of promise.

The first part of Bethesda's post-E3 marketing for The Evil Within 2 is to show off a little bit of what was at the convention. The publisher recently posted these four short gameplay clips that were played on the convention floor. They're all looping below, hopefully not crashing your browser.

Initial impression: Some very conventional evil. Dragging a dead body, stabbing someone, possible arson -- all evil that's easy enough to fathom. The supernatural evil that's presumably also present will have to wait a bit.

News:: Rocket League 2nd Anniversary' birthday' update available today

Rocket League is so much fun. Last year I did Extra Life with my cousin and we raised a few hundred bucks for charity. During the last few hours, Rocket League was one of the games we "played" as drool leaked out of our mouths like two catatonic lumps of crap.

The game has been extremely well supported both on PC and console, with massive performance improvements coming to console for free, and some cool new maps, modes, and customization options.

The third chapter of Half-Life: A Place in the West is coming to Steam this month.

"The Pit" is the third chapter of the Valve-sanctioned fan comic Half-Life: A Place in the West. You can find it on Steam, where the first chapter is "free to play" (read) and subsequent chapters are "paid-DLC." Each paid chapter will run you two bucks. Chapter 3, "The Pit," will be available July 21.

From Steam:

Half-Life: A Place in the West is a fan-made comic book set within Valve's acclaimed Half-Life universe, in which Earth has fallen under the grip of the totalitarian Combine empire following a scientific experiment gone very wrong.

As a group of military commandos sweep across the American wasteland kidnapping children, a troubled father, an intrepid young scientist, and an ancient alien warrior are drawn to the strange city from which the attackers sprung: New Franklin. Once inside, they discover a powerful secret, but the city holds many dangers, and deceptive temptations. Faced with warring clans, diabolical experiments, a treacherous conspiracy, and the growing shadow of the Combine, they must unlock New Franklin’s mysteries before it’s too late - and the lives of everyone in the city hang in the balance.

News:: Bloggers Wanted: The Adaptation

Some things don't belong in this world and yet they are conjured time and again by humans that wish to pay them tribute. A video game, book, comic or TV show becomes popular and later becomes adapted to another medium entirely or, worse, a mobile phone spin-off.

Sometimes you get Telltale's The Walking Dead and other times you get Super Mario Bros.: The Movie -- one a great tribute to the comics and TV shows and the other had its soul stolen and made a '90s movie executive's slave.

And here comes another classic game series with hopes of becoming a Netflix hit as I brace myself and hope it doesn't turn out to be a miserable pile of secrets.

News:: Tokyo Tattoo Girls is a game you can preorder

The PS Vita has been sustained over the past few years almost entirely on titles where a girl falls down, makes a squeak noise, blushes, and her boobs bounce around. I don't know how you'd label that as a genre.

But if you are into those sorts of games, which some of my friends are even if I am too good for that as an adult man *quietly pushes Senran Kagura merchandise under the bed* Vita is where you are going to find them, and one more is on the way courtesy of NISA.

News:: Review: Little Witch Academia (Season 1)

I've been anticipating Little Witch Academia for quite some time. Studio Trigger, the studio behind Kill la Kill and Space Patrol Luloco, produced a series created by Yo Yoshinari, who's worked on Medabots, Gurren Lagann, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Meaning it was okay to be a little excited for the series given the combined talent involved.

While Netflix's Western distribution has certainly derailed some of the hype I had for the series (chopping the current 25 episodes in half, not releasing the series on a weekly basis as other distributors are able to do), I'm pretty satisfied with what we got. 13 episodes of a great looking, cute, Looney Tunes inspired series that needs juuuuust a little more depth.

News:: Project CARS 2 certainly has a bunch of cars

I can't say I'm much of a car guy, but I always find it fascinating to read through the car lists for racing games. Its cool trying to spot the models I actually might know about and then balking at omissions from the roster. Looking over the list of cars from the upcoming Project CARS 2, I'm mostly left wondering where the Hellcat is. How do you make a racing game and leave out one of the fastest consumer vehicles ever made?

I think it mostly has to do with Project CARS being based more on Indy and Formula 1 racing. The Dodge Challenger isn't exactly an Indy car, though it potentially hits speeds faster than an F1 car. That part is super impressive, especially for the sticker price of $64,195.

When did this post become an ad for Dodge? Well, anyway, here is the 180 strong list of cars you'll be driving in Project CARS 2:

News:: The Longest Five Minutes coming to Nintendo Switch

Anime Expo brought good and bad news for fans of retro-styled RPG, The Longest Five Minutes. NIS America have announced that the amnesia-themed adventure is coming to the Nintendo Switch, along with its previously announced PC and PS Vita releases.

Unfortunately, along with this news also came the announcement that the game will be slipping from its expected release date of this year, and will now arrive in the West in 2018 (The game originally launched in Japan last year). This delay hasn't stopped NIS from opening pre-orders on a Limited Edition set, available via their online shop.

News:: Total War Sagas announced, will spin-off main series games

Fans of the Total War series will be happy to learn that developer Creative Assembly is looking to branch out into more standalone expansion style games similar to Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai. This comes as part of a new initiative called "Total War Sagas." These games will focus on, "table-flip moments in history, where events are in the balance and could go any number of interesting and unique ways," reads a blog post from the official website.

The only mentioned title, so far, will be a follow-up to Total War: Rome II in the vein of Total War: Atilla. "To help show the kind of scale we’re talking about," game director Jack Lusted says, "the game that I’m currently working on has a map that is comparable in gameplay size to Total War: Attila, but focused on a smaller geographic area, and the campaign will take as long to complete as any other Total War title does. Focusing on a single geographic location in this way allows us to go into greater detail with the period and setting.”

I thought that was a full game, but I guess the "Sagas" moniker allows the Creative Assembly more freedom to make shorter form titles instead of trying to bloat out each entry with needless padding. Seeing as how a lot of the more recent Total War games have launched with a plethora of issues, stripping the scale back might help with releasing games that actually function without numerous patches.

Even if it doesn't, more Total War isn't necessarily a bad thing. I do think they should offer some of these "Sagas" titles as DLC for main games, since it would be silly to create such a large game and then cut out chunks of it for standalone purposes. Maybe offer reduced pricing for customers with the main game, as a show of good faith.

News:: Cuphead is a true console exclusive for Xbox, and that's not necessarily a good thing

Cuphead has been a staple of Xbox showcases in past years, each time capturing the audience's fascination with its 1930s-era aesthetic. The payoff for watching all those E3 trailers is coming to a (cup)head soon, though; it's finally set to release in late September.

When it does, it'll be a true console exclusive for Xbox. A member of developer StudioMDHR took to NeoGAF to confirm Cuphead is only releasing on Xbox One and PC. It'll be Windows 10 at first, with a GOG release "likely shortly after." Eurogamer followed up on this quote to inquire about Sony's platform, to which StudioMDHR said "Cuphead is a console exclusive for Xbox One. There will be no PS4 version."

That's one of two news stories about Cuphead that is making the rounds. The other comes from an interview with GamesRadar where the lead developers say that they remortgaged their houses to finance the game. It's supposed to be the kind of claim that we find admirable, that they're so committed to Cuphead that they're willing to put their personal well-being on the line.

It really just raises questions about the benefits of signing a platform-exclusive contract. Without assuming any specifics of these deals, isn't the most attractive perk generally thought to be that you have financial stability through the development process? That's supposed to be a safety net that comes with significant post-launch cost. You're giving up the chance of doubling your sales numbers through exposure on another platform (again, ignoring variables like possible increased revenue rates).

The nuances of these contracts are almost always unknown but there's one unchallenged truth that tends to go overlooked: If the game is weak, platform-exclusivity won't help it sell; if it's a hit, the developer will wish it was available on every single viable channel. Cuphead's quality is merely a hypothetical right now, as it won't release for nearly three more months. However, those two scenarios are far from optimal for StudioMDHR -- especially considering its key members remortgaged their homes to get there. Xbox wins in this situation. The developer probably doesn't.

(For posterity's sake, StudioMDHR addressed this deal in an interview with Time last year that went mostly overlooked. The pertinent stuff is pasted below. I'll leave it to you to parse what's sincere and what's PR spin.)

News:: Husband and wife co-op weekend ruins world record Gamerscore

In what can only be considered a monumental mistake, Xbox gamer Ray 'Stallone83' Cox lost his 'highest Gamerscore' world record, which he has held for eleven years straight, after he stopped gaming momentarily to have marital relations with the love of his life.

The tragedy occurred this weekend as Ray, in a rare display of amateurishness, married his beautiful fiancee Cindy before jetting off for an exciting honeymoon. This foolhardy decision allowed Stephen 'smrnov' Rowe to overtake him and claim the title, popping a new gamerscore record just shy of 1.6 million.

Rowe has stated he has no interest in officially registering his score with Guinness World Records, rightly so, as it's All About The Games. In the meantime Cox, who for some reason isn't cutting his honeymoon short despite this news, is expected to get back in the hunt for the top-spot once he returns home.

Well, hope it was worth it, Ray...hope it was worth it...

News:: 'Rocket League' packs tons of freebies in its 'Anniversary' update

No, cross-console multiplayer isn't in today's Anniversary update for Rocket League. But thankfully there's enough (free!) stuff on offer here to take some of the sting off of Sony's sustained stubbornness. We're talking Rick and Morty customization options -- including a Mr. Poopy Butthole topper -- new music, fresh cars and the ability to change your ride's engine audio. Oh, there's a new stadium to tool around in as well. The update will start rolling out later today, at 6pm Eastern.

News:: Game overs are a thing of the past in Super Mario Odyssey

For awhile now, lives and continues in modern gaming haven't really meant much. Since the typical game has an endless amount of checkpoints and infinite retries, carrying over outdated systems hasn't made a lot of sense. It mostly just makes certain segments overly frustrating when you're forced to redo an entire level. The Mario series, for some reason, continued having lives and even a "Game Over" screen, but that is set to change in the upcoming Super Mario Odyssey.

Straight from the official Japanese Twitter account for the game, there is a short video of Mario walking into an enemy and dying. The only repercussion is that the plucky plumber loses 10 coins. The tweet states that even if you have nine coins, you still won't see an end to your journey. You can play with confidence and enjoy the journey!

While the dream of playing a lost version of Rayman for Super NES on Nintendo's Switch console hasn't come true (yet), we have a bit of an update about the game itself. Archivist and game developer Omar Cornut recently borrowed the ROM original developer Michel Ancel (above) teased last fall, dumped it to his computer and then uploaded the files to Dropbox for everyone to play. News:: Snipperclips is outselling Zelda on the Japanese eShop

Zelda has been selling like hot cakes physically, but what about the digital front? Well, there's four other games above it in Japan according to Nintendo.

Based on an official ranking from Nintendo's site, their top five best seller list includes Snipperclips, Minecraft, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Kamiko, and Zelda. This list takes all sales into account from the Japanese eShop's launch in March. It warms my heart to see the former in there, as it's a pretty underrated gem in the west -- not many folks I know have pulled the trigger on it or even know what it is.

The full list below has a few interesting tidbits, like the fact that Arms is in the top 10 despite its recent launch, and that Shovel Knight is still kicking years later on a brand new platform. Right now the Switch is pretty healthy, let's see if Nintendo can keep that up.

News:: Watch these lazy rabbits promote Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, is bearing down on us. The anticipated re-release is being celebrated by publishers Square Enix with, of all things, a 24/7 livestream of a warren of rabbits, supposedly representing FFXII's bunny-like species, the moogles.

Renaming their twitch channel 'Mooglewatch' especially for the occasion, Square hopes that you will enjoy seeing the little critters lying around, sleeping, moving a little and then sleeping some more, whilst using their floppy ears to subliminally convince you to pick up The Zodiac Age. The rabbits, located at London's Vauxhall City Farm, will be broadcast for your viewing pleasure until the game's PS4 launch date of July 11.

News:: Grab Shadow Warrior Classic for free on GOG

Free is good. Shadow Warrior Classic, a great retro shooter, is free. That's good.

Go ahead and mosey over to GOG and get it as part of a free promotion, which includes the DRM-free complete edition of the game spanning every episode. If you'll recall it was already free on Steam for some time, but again, this is DRM-free and on another platform you may or may not prefer. It's an option!

I miss all of these over-the-top shooters like Blood, with their labyrinthine map design that never reached checklist proportions -- even the new Shadow Warrior series doesn't quite feel the same. It's kind of a lose-lose proposition as you need to cater toward a whole new audience, but I feel like Bethesda's recent Doom was more than up to that task and showed everyone how it's done.
