News:: Nintendo is pulling the plug on Miitomo

Oh Miitomo, you were too pure and lacking in engaging content for this world.

Less than two years after its debut, Nintendo has confirmed it is ending Miitomo, the once popular but not so much anymore social networking app. Despite pulling in huge download numbers when it launched, the app was unable to remain relevant in the fast-moving mobile marketplace and quickly found itself in the shadow of Nintendo's other mobile offerings that followed it. Coins for the app are no longer able to be purchased and the entire service will shut down May 9.

If you're still playing, Nintendo is sending Miitomo out with a farewell festival. From now until the service ends there will be a daily log-in bonus of 2,000 coins and five game tickets. If you've used Miitomo at all over the last 21 months and have a picture or two you remember and would like to save, make sure you do it before that May 9 deadline.

News:: Capcom launches a behind-the-scenes series for Monster Hunter: World

I am always fascinated at how games go from the planning stage to a released form. The different changes and difficulties in creating the entertainment that we love can sometimes make for dramatic underdog stories. You can also just have a plain ass story about how the developer's childhood influenced them and they put in hard work. Whatever the case, it is great to hear.

Capcom thinks so, as well, as evidenced by this new "behind-the-scenes" series on Monster Hunter: World. The first episode covers the entire concept stage of development, although it is rather brief and doesn't hit on a lot that diehard fans won't already know. That being said, it is still worth a watch for giving us a glimpse at the design process behind the series.

News:: Good luck dealing with Rune: Ragnarok's gigantic beasts

Human Head's back and it's back with a fury. Last August, we learned that there's going to be a new installment in early-2000s series Rune. Now we get to see more than some fire and stones.

In the first proper look at Rune: Ragnarok, there's a lot of Norse mythology to marvel at. Humongous sea serpents, terrifying dragons, whatever's in the header image. (Are they just called giants? Yeah, They Might Be Giants.) A BIG PUPPY. And this is all before we even get to the gods.

This open-world action RPG doesn't yet have a release date but it has a this-is-when-you-can-try-it time frame. Human Head is running either an alpha or a beta sometime later this year. Details about signing up will presumably come closer to testing time. For now, you'll have to stay content with this trailer and the dude getting beat with his own arm at the very end.

News:: The 300 Week 3: Mary and the Ghibli Gravy

Welcome back to The 300, a weekly feature recounting my attempt to see 300 movies in theaters in the year 2018. Each week I’ll be watching new releases, classics, and hidden gems, trying to explore the many joys of cinema.

As always, there are three rules in The 300:

  • The movie must be at least 40 minutes long, meeting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' definition of a feature film.
  • I must watch the movie at a movie theater, screening room, or outdoor screening venue.
  • While I can watch movies I've seen before 2018, I cannot count repeated viewings of the same film in 2018 multiple times.

As we hit week three, so far no signs of burnout, and I’ve gotten a little bit more ahead of schedule. It was unplanned, but I wound up watching three animated movies this week, including Mary and the Witch's Flower, the first film from Studio Ponoc, a new Japanese animation studio founded by Studio Ghibli alums.

And so, onward.

News:: Ubisoft Club has a personal assistant now

Digital personal assistants are en vogue right now, as the likes of Google Home and Amazon Echo find their way into more and more households. Privacy concerns aside, it's kind of neat casually saying "Hey Google, play 'The Boys Are Back in Town'" and then immediately hearing some tasty guitar licks. I'm easily impressed.

Ubisoft has found a more niche use for this technology. Today, it revealed Sam which is a personal assistant that's exclusive to Ubisoft Club. Sam will talk to you about all things related to Ubisoft games. As Engadget details from a brief demo, it's the sort of thing that will play trailers and give release dates and mindlessly chat with you about assassins.

This functionality seemingly has limited appeal, but it sounds as if competitive players might find more uses for Sam. It's able to track stats and offer tips in a way that could theoretically be helpful. Honestly, the most effective use might be for people who have fallen off a persistent game like The Division, and they're looking to get back in but haven't kept up with the updates.

Sam is in its infancy now, as it's in beta and only available in Canada. Ubisoft says that it's expanding to more markets in the coming months as an integrated feature of the Ubisoft Club app. But one publisher's library might be too narrow of a scope to warrant a fiddling with a new personal assistant. That's for everyone to figure out on their own.

News:: Banner Saga 3 settles into a summer 2018 release

Stoic is rounding out its tactical Viking trilogy sooner than expected. While the Kickstarter campaign had suggested a December 2018 release for Banner Saga 3, the game is now confirmed for this summer.

Along with that spot of good news, the team brought out the first in a series of vignettes, this time focusing on Fasolt. The video has spoilers for the prior games, so be warned.

It's equal parts ominous and exciting.

News:: Resident Evil 7's real horror lies in its resonance

The storm outside used to haunt you obsessively. Harsh winds clash into the shuddering walls of the Baker residence. You hear an erratic moan from upstairs. Or was that the wind? You don’t know. You’ll never know. It may have been one the residents, but it’s certainly not your missing wife, Mia.

You have no choice. You walk, suspiciously alone, into the foyer. The floorboards squish underneath you with each step. A lone piano key hammers through the creaking walls, irritating the silence. You don’t make the decision; your head immediately snaps toward the sound to detect the source. It’s almost a relief -- finally, an image in the auditory static.

As the environmental cacophony rises in and out of silence, all that’s left to focus on is your breathing. It’s a constant reminder of your mortality, but at least it exists.

This is shelter. This is safe. No matter how dreadful it is to exist in all this noise, this is safe.

News:: Final Pacific Rim: Uprising trailer delivers Jaeger bombs

The final Pacific Rim: Uprising trailer shares a great many more plot details than its predecessors. Where they were heavy with awesome music set to shots of giant robots fighting even more giant monsters, this is heavy with plot points ... and music set to shots of giant robots fighting even more giant monsters. But there's more!

It's revealed that Jake Pentecost (Jon Bodega) is a reluctant hero, unlike his father Stacker (Idris Elba). The trailer confirms what earlier trailers hinted: there are rogue Jaegers at loose and our heroes (reluctant or otherwise) will be fighting them as well as the monsters (Kaiju). Young cadets will be pressed into service when no one else is available. Oh, and in case you were wondering, yes, Charlie Day is back as a mad scientist, and will be available to spout random one line zingers throughout.

A lot of standard stuff here: a new generation of heroes that don't want to fight for the cause, but eventually do, bad guys that return in bigger-badder iterations, grandiose pre-fight speeches, and unexpected nemesis of the more human variety getting in the way of what should be the true fight.

That said, the visuals, much like in the original Pacific Rim, look amazing. We're still in.

News:: So, just what is left for the Nintendo 3DS?

On February 26, the Nintendo 3DS will celebrate its seventh year on the market. In that time, it has sold more than 70 million units worldwide and more than 340 million games. It’s been home to the great franchises we grew up with like Sonic and Zelda and marked the debut of new, celebrated properties like Bravely Default and BOXBOY. It may not have had the stratospheric sales of its predecessor, but hot damn if it isn’t arguably Nintendo’s finest handheld to date.

Like Harry Potter, year seven is looking to be a rough one. Any limelight the handheld had has been taken by the Switch, and over the course of this year, I imagine many gamers will make the move to the handheld-console hybrid at the expense of Nintendo’s dual-screen dynamo. But with more than 700,000 people picking up a 3DS or 2DS last month in the US alone, there are scores of customers looking for great games to play on it.

You may have moved on but don't start digging its grave yet. Just because 2018 isn't as jam-packed as years past doesn't mean there are some great games coming to it. I scoured the internet to find games guaranteed to hit the 3DS this year and those that haven’t been confirmed yet but still could be localized in 2018.*

News:: Get up to speed with Kingdom Come: Deliverance before next month's launch

Kingdom Come: Deliverance seems like one of those games you can lose yourself in.

It's an open-world RPG set in medieval Bohemia that's striving for realism rather than spell-slinging. It's been in development at Warhorse Studios for years and years, with a £1.1 million Kickstarter back in 2014. It's ambitious in that potentially cool, potentially rough-around-the-edges sort of way. And, notably, it's almost finished -- the game launches February 13 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

It's the perfect time to catch back up if, like me, you've lost track along the way.

Today's video is a helpful 16-minute overview of our son-of-a-blacksmith protagonist Henry's struggles in a 16-square-kilometer world that's indifferent to him at best and actively hostile at worst.

For a look at how one of the main quests can potentially play out, head to the 12:12 mark.

I suspect I'd be rubbish at the hand-to-hand combat, but that's what RPG speech skills are for.

News:: Amazon Prime launches on-demand Pokemon channel in U.S.

Online retail giants Amazon have launched their dedicated Pokemon channel. The service, which features access to hours of classic Pokemon animated fun, is available now for U.S Prime subscribers.

The channel currently hosts seasons 2-5 and seasons 10-16 of the '90s juggernaut that was Pokemon The Series. There are also four classic movies available for viewing: Pokemon 2000, Pokemon The Movie 3, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew and Pokemon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea. The content available on-demand will be rotated regularly, with nearly two decades of TV shows and feature films to choose from.

Pokemon was a little after my time, so I never really bought into it, but I remember how the shows, cards and games steamrolled over the planet in the tail-end of the '90s, beginning a legacy that continues to this day. Hopefully some of you guys and gals will be able to take a joyous trip down memory lane thanks to this new video-on-demand service.

News:: Review: River City: Rival Showdown

River City Ransom is one of those recognizable names from the NES era that then stood out in the growing beat em’ up genre by using some nifty RPG elements, and is best known for the iconic “Barf” expression that enemies exclaimed upon defeat. Originally a much different game in Japan, River City Ransom is a localized version of Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari, which is part of the long-running Kunio-kun series of games.

Well, the Kunio-kun series celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2016 and released Downtown Nekketsu Monogatar SP in Japan, which is a remake of the game that eventually became River City Ransom. Now we’ve got that remake in the form of River City: Rival Showdown and the questions of how it lives up to the classic or will it make fans barf?

News:: Impressive number of competitors for inaugural EVO Japan tournament

This week sees the first ever EVO Japan fighting game tournament take place in Tokyo. Not that it has seen much pomp and circumstance, with little marketing, reports or Western media coverage leading up to the event. That hasn't stopped the competitors from pouring in though.

As reported on EventHubs, The turnout for the inaugural event is looking very impressive. Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 have almost equaled the amount of players that both games saw at EVO 2017, held last Summer in Las Vegas. SFV has over 2000 registered competitors, with over 1000 signing up for Tekken.

There has been a huge boost to the pools of other titles. KoF XIV, Guilty Gear and BlazBlue have each beaten their Western counterpart's player-count by several hundred players. Although this can obviously be put down to those games' heavier presence in Asia, its still a great shot-in-the-arm for the communities of these titles.

There are also some fun side-tournies going on, with classics such as USFIV, Darkstalkers 3, ARMS and even Catherine all holding their own competitions to find the best of the best. The only game to see a severe decrease in numbers in Super Smash Bros. 4, which has literally halved its EVO 2017 entrants from just over 1500 to around 750, likely due to the game's huge proliferation of North American pro-players.

Despite the more subdued media approach to EVO Japan 2018, it looks like this first event is set to be just as busy, just as frantic, and just as excited as any EVO tournament past. The qualifiers take place January 26-27, with the finals being held on the 28 at Akiba Square.

News:: David Jaffe's game studio is going through some hard times

In what is sadly becoming a trend in the industry, another indie studio has been forced to lay staff off. This time, Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency (known for Drawn to Death) is the one on the chopping block. Helmed by industry legend David Jaffe (Twisted Metal, God of War), it seems like nothing is going well for Bartlet Jones.

Jaffe took to Twitter to inform fans that staff has been laid off and that a potential project had been cancelled recently.

News:: Crypt of the NecroDancer is getting a Switch exclusive character

Crypt of the NecroDancer might have been released back in 2015, but that isn't stopping developer Brace Yourself Games (or hundreds of other indie studios scrambling to support Nintendo's latest) from crafting a Switch port in 2018.

As announced last year the rhythm is bound for the Switch, but now we have a little more information by way of Spike Chunsoft. It's out in Japan on February 1 for ¥2,160 (roughly $20), and it'll include an exclusive character -- Reaper.

Reaper was originally tucked away as a bit of unfinished code in the PC edition, but players unearthed the character anyway. You can see them in action in the video below with their minion revival mechanic.

News:: Tomorrow Corporation's latest puzzler is 7 Billion Humans

In 7 Billion Humans, the new programming puzzle game from Tomorrow Corporation, machines have given jobs back to humans. Every last one of us. All in a single office building "visible from space." The minds behind World of Goo, Little Inferno, and Human Resource Machine haven't lost their touch.

Whereas its predecessor Human Resource Machine had a single worker performing various tasks, 7 Billion Humans "has an all new language that lots of workers can all execute at the same time." Put another way, the game is essentially "your very own parallel computer made of people."

It's planned for Steam and Nintendo Switch. Even if this isn't your thing, the trailer might be.

News:: BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle producer addresses DLC pricing

Speaking in an interview with Japanese publication Dengeki PlayStation, Producer Toshimichi Mori had various things to say about Arc System Works' upcoming crossover fighter BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, particularly pertaining to the game's DLC, which has caused controversy among fans.

Eyebrows were raised when it was revealed that the tag-team based punch-up would launch with 20 characters, to be followed by a further 20 as paid DLC down the line. This was seen by many as a greed move, with the game literally splitting its roster across two purchases, with comparisons being drawn to the great Street Fighter X Tekken drama of 2012.

Mori sees things differently. In the interview, he suggests that the base game of BCTB will have a reduced price-point of ¥5,800 (or $53/£37) with the idea being that once the player has purchased the further 20 DLC characters, they should, in total, have only paid a similar price to a full retail game.

It sounds like the DLC would have to be pretty dang cheap for that theory to play out, and also assuming that International territories take up the same price-point. It still seems odd to lot of folk to have this variety of piece-meal delivery systems for modern video games. Especially after years of paying the sticker price and knowing your game was 100% complete, for better or worse.

Whether this new information on the DLC pricing system is enough to turn wary fans back around remains to be seen. Some might still see it as a weird way to deliver the fighter. Some may see it is as smoke-and-mirrors, while others might be more than appeased by the situation. I guess we won't know for sure until the DLC prices are confirmed.

Elsewhere in the interview, Mori also mentioned that BCTB would not be seeing an arcade release, that it was a brand they hoped to push well into the future if it finds a solid fanbase and, interestingly, that it was being designed specifically with gamepad controls in mind.

News:: Now that PUBG is out, its developer doesn't have a 'clear roadmap' for 2.0

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a pretty fun, low-commitment survival shooter, but it has a certain about of jank to it even as it officially launched into its 1.0 state (a process that took roughly nine months from its March 2017 Early Access launch). Some of that has been smoothed out, some of it hasn't, and all the while players are wondering what's next in store for the game -- the thing is, PUBG Corporation isn't quite sure.

Although there are a number of new content drops in the works, most notably a third level, we won't have an idea of when that's arriving anytime soon. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, PUBG Corporation CEO Chang Han Kim noted that they "don't have a clear roadmap with 2.0 and 3.0," though they vaguely plan to enhance "the competitive side of the game." Kim explains that 2.0 may not even come by the end of 2018.

Kim notes that planning things out just isn't his style. going on to explain "We would not have been able to achieve the success we have if we took the conventional approach. If we had followed the steps of other games, I don't think we would have seen the same results."

Their next move is "aggressively hiring" at their new Amsterdam office, with an aim of getting 50 more people on board (split between development and the business side). Kim gives us a bit of background on the situation by explaining, "The community has grown exponentially. It's difficult to monitor everything and we hope to address this by expanding the team and putting in more effort." Translation -- they're trying to meet the global demand and cater to eSports ventures right now, so don't expect a whole lot of content while that happens.

News:: Darkest Dungeon getting physical release on PS4 and Switch

Publisher Merge Games and developers Red Hook Studios have announced that tough-as-nails strategy title Darkest Dungeon will be getting a physical release this Spring.

The turn-based battle title will be released on high street shelves for PS4 and Nintendo Switch as Darkest Dungeon: Ancestral Edition. This retail version of the 2016 title will include DLC expansions The Crimson Court and The Shieldbreaker.

"Many fans have been clamouring for a physical edition of the game", said Red Hook Co-President, Tyler Sigman. "Merge Games was the right partner to help us get this done! We're thrilled for people to have the option to buy a retail box...and we're going to be keeping a few copies in our personal libraries, too!"

In other news, Red Hook Studios are continuing to work on a fix to an unfortunate bug that is rendering the Switch edition of The Crimson Court unbeatable. Said fix has been submitted to Nintendo and should be rolled out soon.

News:: Atlanta-based brewing company creates beer inspired by Zelda

It's only a matter of time, with the craft scene as hopping as it is, until we got another video game inspired beer. This one is from Second Self Beer Company in Atlanta, and it's titled "Triforce."

It's not a half-assed effort though, as the name is derived from the ingredients -- there's three malts with barley, wheat, and oats, and three hops in cascade, mosaic, and amarillo -- all of which come together to form the pieces of "power, courage, and wisdom." It's an IPA, and 6.1% ABV (slightly higher than your average mega-brand).

The beer is available year round, but unfortunately Atlanta state law prevents the shipment of it. If you're in town you can participate in the "Triforce Quest," a sort of city-wide scavenger hunt with prizes.

News:: Ubisoft's Sam is a virtual assistant meant solely for gamers

Apple has Siri, Amazon has Alexa, and now, Ubisoft has Sam. Yes, really. It's a virtual assistant geared specifically toward gaming, and Ubisoft has started to weave a beta version of the service into its Ubisoft Club companion app... well, for Canadian gamers, anyway. Ubisoft is clearly treating Sam as a test balloon of sorts, meant to gather data and gauge people's reactions to the idea of a game-fluent concierge. After a brief demo, though, it seems pretty clear that not everyone will find Sam useful in the short term.

News:: Atari open million-dollar crowdfunding campaign for Rollercoaster Tycoon for Switch

Atari Game Partners, a subsidiary of Atari, are a group assigned to its parent's back catalogue of IPs, responsible for the relaunch or re-release of Atari brands past. AGP are currently looking to bring a new Rollercoaster Tycoon title to the Nintendo Switch, and are taking to crowdfunding site StartEngine for financial backing.

The team are looking for between $10,000 and $1.7 million for the project, with a minimum investor pledge of $250. This ain't Indivisible. Your investment entitles you to a pro-rata share of 50% of the game's profits until you meet 120% of your investment total, then 25% thereafter for 18 months after release, or the early termination of AGP's licence to sell the product. If you invest $750, you get the same deal, plus 25% off of a single copy of the game. Yep. A $1,500 investment will also get you, Ted DiBiase, a copy of The Art of Atari book.

It should be noted that the minimum $10,000 requirement has already been achieved. The game will be developed by Nvizzio Creations, responsible for 2016's critically-mauled Rollercoaster Tycoon World. News:: Get a look at Nintendo's first building, which started as a woodworking company

Nintendo has one of the richest history of any company in the game industry. I mean you could probably stretch that qualifier to "any industry" and get away with it -- they're that prolific, dating all the way back to the 19th century. French book site Omake Books managed to give us a glimpse into that history this week by providing a picture of Nintendo's original headquarters, circa 1889, in Kyoto.

The story goes that the building was originally owned by Naoshichi Yamauchi, who operated Haikyo, a woodworking business. After bringing on Fusajiro Yamauchi the rest was history -- Nintendo was born with the sole purpose of crafting Hanafuda cards, a thriving business when the Japanese government had outlawed other forms of card games. It wasn't until 1963 that the company would be changed from "Nintendo Playing Card Co." to "Nintendo Co."

Incredibly they pivoted into toys because most of their other business (including a love hotel chain) failed. What might have been!

Bandai Namco has announced that Full Metal Panic! Fight! Who Dares Wins will release on May 31 in Southeast Asia. This means that it will share the same release date as the Japanese version of the game.The company has released a trailer as well, further detailing what kind of gameplay and plot elements players can expect.

News:: Cracker Jack returns to wreck heads in Fighting EX Layer

Arika have released a new teaser trailer for the latest character returning to throw down in their curious upcoming title Fighting EX Layer.

The video shows Blair Dame facing off in a showdown with her old bodyguard, he of the slick suits and sweet sideburns fame, Cracker Jack. The former Vegas bouncer, whose design was inspired by Lupin III's right-hand man Jigen Daisuke, first appeared in Street Fighter EX, where he fought with a heavy hitting, up-close-and-personal style.

Arika have also announced that in Fighting Layer EX, the character will simply be known as "Jack" due to licensing issues, perhaps with caramel-coated popcorn? There's also something really awkward about this trailer, which has a real Windows Movie Maker feel to it, which isn't really in keeping with previous character reveals.

Fighting EX Layer is scheduled for launch on PS4 later this year.
