News::Metal Gear Solid V Premium Edition for Japan revealed

Just after showing off the new trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes during last night's PS4 All Access event, Konami has revealed plans for its premium edition to be released in Japan. Currently on sale at Amazon JP, the premium package is available for the PS4, PS3, and Xbox 360 and it includes a copy of Ground Zeroes, a novelization of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and a highly-detailed Snake action figurine, with accessories, made by Revoltech. The bundle is priced at 8,480 yen, which is about $85, and they are set to release sometime in spring.

Of course, there hasn't been any word on whether or not the West will see a similar offering, but it is something for importers to consider. What's interesting is the absence of an Xbox One version, but of course that could be just because it isn't out yet. The package certainly looks wonderful, and Konami is clearly going all out for this micro-release.

News::Assassin's Creed IV PS4 needs a patch for 1080p

Here I was, thinking that Infinity Ward's day-one Call of Duty: Ghosts PlayStation 4 patch for native 1080p output was a fluke. Ubisoft will have a similar update coming "shortly after release" for the PS4 version of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag , upping the resolution from 900p to 1080p and adding improved anta-aliasing.

The post breaking the news is, well, it's odd. The native 1080p support is pitched as this awesome thing while, at the same time, there's discussion of some players not being able to perceive the difference in visual fidelity.

"But why ship at 900p in the first place? To meet an essential goal: deliver a visually brilliant game at a steady 30 frames per second (the industry gold standard for open-world games). Finishing the game at 900p gave the development team the extra room in terms of the GPU and CPU usage to ensure the framerate never dips below 30 frames per second. The team then used the time between the ship date and the release to focus on a title update that could deliver native 1080p resolution on the PS4."

Ubisoft's new anti-aliasing technique that was similarly worked on after certification will be released for Xbox One as well. You're welcome. I can only imagine what the production schedule was like on ACIV if 1080p couldn't even make it in time for launch.

Maximum PC: There's been quite a bit of confusion over AMD's updated game bundle for the holiday season. The Sunnyvale chip designer laid out the details earlier this week, and the way it was worded, it sounded like all customers who purchased a Radeon R9 Series graphics card on or after November 13, 2013, would receive a complimentary copy of Battlefield 4. News::Ultra Street Fighter IV releasing before EVO 2014

There was some concern about the state of Ultra Street Fighter IV after Capcom said the game wasn't where it needed to be back in October. Today, the company gave us something to go on in the way of release information -- USFIV will debut in arcades in Japan this April, followed by digitally-distributed console versions in North America and Europe after that point but before EVO 2014, which is scheduled for July 11-13, 2013.

"I agree that it's a little ways away but Ultra will be everything our fans have requested and more than they expected," Capcom's Peter "ComboFiend" Rosas wrote. "We've been working hard to ensure that this is indeed the most openly influenced version of SF yet. Just on Capcom-Unity alone there was well over 20,000 comments that we had to go through to make sure that the most beneficial changes made it in, while also pleasing the fans. That takes work people!"

In the mean time, there will be location tests of Ultra Street Fighter IV in Japan.

News::Ace Attorney producer wants to revive some Capcom titles

With the arrival of the new generation, Capcom is looking to try new strategies for how to better satisfy its audience. And while Deep Down is an interesting experiment, a producer at Capcom has some other ideas in mind -- and it's all about the publisher going back to its roots.

During an interview in the recent Famitsu , translated by Siliconera, Motohide Eshiro talked about his desires to see Capcom return to some of its classic brands. As a producer for Ace Attorney, Devil May Cry, and the Onimusha franchises, he's had firsthand experience with working on such properties. “Well, since I am part of Capcom, I’d like to continue releasing more games for Onimusha and Devil May Cry,” he tells Famitsu.

“Again, I’d also like to revive side-scroller games, such as Final Fight and Dungeons & Dragons! They may be simple, but they have plenty of depth, and I definitely believe that remaking older action games with today’s technology would make things interesting.”

Eshiro elaborated, adding that the publisher still has deep knowledge of the action genre that must be taken advantage of while it can. “I believe that this brilliant sense of balance has been cultivated from Capcom’s years and years of knowhow, and was only made possible because it was made by Capcom. That said, I believe that while Capcom should never throw that away, they also need to expand where they can.”

While Capcom has disappointed fans in recent years, Eshiro speaks quite honestly about what the company can do to set things right. Strider is certainly a great start, and his positivity is great indicator for the publisher's desire to change things. Let's just hope they'll follow through.

What other long-dormant games should Capcom look at to revive for the new console generation?

The Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes side mission shown during Tokyo Game Show 2013 is back, and now it's narrated in English by co-producer Sean Eyestone. I was happy to sit through this footage a second time, especially in light of last night's Classic Snake announcement.

Whenever game developers give freedom to go about completing objectives in my own way, I always end up cracking under the pressure of trying to handle the situation like the (usually badass) character should. Happens in nearly every non-linear action game.

Ground Zeroes will be out this spring for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One with The Phantom Pain releasing sometime later.

We've spent the last several months looking at the PlayStation 4 from the outside. Now that it's in homes, the time has come to take a look at what lies within. Here's a teardown video from iFixit which goes over the process of disassembling the new console and how difficult it'll be to do things like upgrading the hard drive and cleaning the fan.

Looks pretty simple. The hard drive comes out easily and won't void your warranty, something Sony's generally pretty good about. And should you have to crack the console open for some reason, it appears to come apart with a minimum of fuss. Nice.
