News:: Quantum Break's Xbox One X patch is hysterically large

It isn't really a surprise to find out that a game is 40+ GB in this day and age. Its kind of a sad reality, but it makes some sense. Impressive graphics are gonna eat up space. What is really pushing it is when an upgrade patch for a game is larger than the game itself. Quantum Break is getting an Xbox One X patch with fresh, new 4K assets and that specific patch clocks in around 50 GB. Along with another patch that probably enables 4K support, Quantum Break now occupies roughly 102 GB in total.

One of the ways that developer Remedy got around the limited hard drive space of the original Xbox One was by streaming the video portion of the game to consoles. If you wanted to download those files in higher quality, you'd have to set aside 75 GB for the opportunity. With this new Xbox One X patch and that video file, you're looking at around 178 GB to fit the entirety of Quantum Break on your brand new Xbox One X. That is roughly 17.8% of the default 1 TB hard drive. Holy shit!

This echoes the 100 GB download that Forza 7 had on PC. 4K assets are huge and as we move into the era where games are made specifically for 4K TV sets, that size is only going to get bigger. The real issue is that data caps and bandwidth limits exist in the US and developers aren't taking steps to accommodate that. What is someone on a military base supposed to do with their Xbox One X and Quantum Break? There would be no point in even attempting to download that patch, because it would probably destroy the internet in the surrounding area.

At least the Xbox One and PS4 have support for external hard drives, because there is no way either console manufacturer is going to start offering 4 TB hard drives in the near future. At some point, though, the individual size of supported drives is going to have a limit and you'll end up needing multiple hard drives connected to your console like some kind of Frankenstein's monster. Then we'll be getting into an issue with power consumption and this is just insane. UGH! We need to remedy this nonsense...ooo, I made a pun!

News:: Perfect World has shut down Gigantic developer Motiga

Motiga, the developer behind free-to-play MOBA-like hero shooter Gigantic, will close its doors soon. Employees have confirmed that the entire studio is shuttering and that nearly all of the staff will be left without jobs.

It's unknown how many former employees are affected, but it seems to be somewhere north of 50. Motiga has had tumultuous staffing issues in the past few years, with mass layoffs becoming semi-regular occurrences.

Motiga's frequent layoffs mirrored the troubled development of Gigantic. Years went by where the game didn't seem any closer to launching. Microsoft was the original publisher, but it eventually pulled out of the project in mid-2016. Perfect World stepped in and assumed publishing duties, and Gigantic finally released in July 2017.

Perfect World's involvement didn't end at publishing Gigantic, however. It had quietly acquired Motiga and framed the investment as a "partnership." We asked Motiga founder and CEO Chris Chung about everything surrounding this situation, and he provided a frank and detailed statement. Here it is, in full:

News:: Comments of the Week 23: Very Superstitious

Hey folks. Welcome to yet another edition of Comments of the Week from your resident cave dweller ooktar. It's week 23 and 23 is a pretty mysterious number. Did you know that there are 23 chromosomes in the human sex cell or that Julius Caesar was stabbed 23 times? How about that Max Headroom first aired on Network 23 or the Dude from The Big Lebowski always bowls at lane 23. 23 is everywhere if you look for it. Though I guess that's true for a lot of numbers though.

Anyways enough enigma talk, let's get to this week's comments.

News:: 'Octodad: Dadliest Catch' hits the Nintendo Switch November 9th

If you haven't played the ultra-charming (and maybe a little disturbing) game Octodad: Dadliest Catch, yet, now's maybe the time. Developer Young Horses just tweeted that it has ported the bizarrely compelling (and super successful) title to the Nintendo Switch. The game will be available for download on the Nintendo eShop on November 9th for $15.

News:: Cuphead's physical edition opts for a game code rather than a disc

There's been talk of a physical release for Cuphead and it looks like that's happening sooner than later. How does next week sound? There's going to be an Xbox One boxed copy, which is great -- this game deserves shelf space -- but, unfortunately, it packs in a redeemable code instead of a game disc.

This photo comes courtesy of Cheap Ass Gamer user Tyrok, who also mentions a Tuesday, November 7 release right alongside the Xbox One X launch. If you look closely at the back of the box, you'll see five pieces of art up top -- each copy of Cuphead includes one of these collectible cels.

I'm mostly of the mind that a physical edition without a disc is better than nothing at all, but I'd still like to see Studio MDHR come out with a full-on collector's edition for this game if at all possible.

News:: Captain Rainbow's fan translation patch is now available for testing

The last we heard of Nintendo's quirky (and Japanese exclusive) Captain Rainbow, a full translation had been completed, but just needed to be applied to the game. Now, out of the blue, that fan patch is available to use. It isn't 100% complete, mind you, but you can download the mostly completed patch and post any errors you might find.

The patch was made by a fan named MarkAss (great name!). It combines the work of the previous translation group, Kirameki, with some new code that makes everything look fancy in the game. I can't find anything saying it's compatible with Wii U systems, but Wii's are ridiculously cheap nowadays, so it shouldn't be hard to find a system. Captain Rainbow is also $14 on Play-Asia.com, so maybe this is the best time to get in on the bizarre game.

I just want to use this opportunity to point out that I didn’t take the easy way out and use the subheader of “What could possibly go wrong?” because we all know the answer to that question already.

News:: Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon have all the legendaries

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon have more surprises up their sleeves.

For the completionists out there, you'll be able to stock up on legendary Pokémon. They're all here. Granted, they'll be divvied up between the two games, so trading will be involved as per usual, but still.

Ultra Sun will have Ho-Oh, Raikou, Groudon, Latios, Dialga, Heatran, Reshiram, Tornadus, Xerneas, while Ultra Moon gets Lugia, Entei, Kyogre, Latias, Palkia, Regigigas, Zekrom, Thundurus, and Yveltal.

Today's trailer runs through some other additions, like a Battle Agency with Pokémon rentals, and one particularly cool story reveal: the return of Giovanni. The big boss is back and he's recruited other series villains to form a familiar new supergroup, Team Rainbow Rocket. Think of the cosplay potential!

News:: Ace of Seafood brings laser-firing fish to PS4 next week

If we can't get a Tokyo Jungle sequel (or even a re-release on PS4; I'll happily settle for that!) then I'll just have to get my insane animal action in elsewhere. Ace of Seafood, which released for PC last year but is only now coming to PlayStation 4 on November 9, fits the bill. I mean, look at this.

This is an oceanic third-person shooter in which "humans have all but disappeared" and fish, crabs, and squids fire laser beams at one another while battling for control of the reefs. It's a beautiful mess.

"In this world, sea creatures possess the ability to shoot powerful lasers that can destroy just about anything. Organize up to six members of fish or crabs in your party. Defeat enemies, collect followers, train yourself and secure reefs. Expand your fighting power by fighting various other creatures while exploring the vast underwater world.

Ransack the reefs. Discover an underwater world. Raise an army. Multiply your victories. Do whatever it takes to become the Ace of Seafood."

Outgunning fish, collecting their DNA, breeding an army... this is my kind of madness.

News:: Octodad: Dadliest Catch tumbles to Switch next week

Octodad: Dadliest Catch is a silly game for silly people and soon enough, it'll be on Nintendo Switch.

A listing on Nintendo's website noted a Thursday, November 9 launch date for this latest version, which developer Young Horses has since confirmed. It'll cost $15, just like it does on other platforms.

I imagine Octodad will do well for itself on Switch even this late after the original release. It's a good fit for the Nintendo audience with its original premise and endearing sense of humor and heart.

News:: Don't go chasin' butterflies in Super Lucky's Tale's launch trailer

3D platformers: They're super hot right now! Everyone's playing that Mario game, A Hat in Time was very good and probably overlooked, and Bubsy, uh, exists.

Super Lucky's Tale is set to join that list. It releases alongside the Xbox One X next week for $30. Microsoft just put out the launch trailer where we see that a harmless butterfly is responsible for setting off this whole chain of events. Please stick to the ladybugs and caterpillars you're used to.

I'm particularly keyed up for Super Lucky's Tale because me and Jordan played it very early in the morning at E3 (probably 11am) and it goddamn ruled. It was Jordan's assignment but I finished something else and came over to steal the controller. Rude man! We both liked it enough to give it a nomination for Destructoid's Best of E3, though.

News:: Sony is bundling Gran Turismo Sport with PlayStation VR

While there will almost certainly be more options for would-be PlayStation VR buyers later this month as we inch toward Black Friday, Sony has a new bundle that might speak to racing fans. It throws in a physical copy of last month's Gran Turismo Sport at no extra cost, so it's that, the headset, a PlayStation Camera, and "an updated version of the PS VR Demo Disc" for $400 USD and $500 CAD.

I'd half-forgotten that GT Sport supports virtual reality until I saw this news. It's not across the board, though -- you'll be able to play one-on-one races in VR Drive mode in the Arcade.

It's also worth reminding that Sony is coming out with a PlayStation VR revision (model number CUH-ZVR2) that supports HDR pass-through with an updated Processor Unit, meaning you won't need to mess with any cords to see HDR content on your TV. This new model also has a thinner connection cable and shifts the headphone jack to a better, more integrated spot. If you end up going for this GT Sport bundle, you won't get these helpful tweaks -- it contains the original PSVR model.

News:: Best Call of Duty: WWII deals for PC and consoles up to 19% off

Another year, another Call of Duty. But wait, this time we're going back to the roots. All the way back to World War II. Why? Because it's "in" again, that's why. Developed by Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software, the latest title Call of Duty: WWII will launch tomorrow at 12:00am Eastern, which means you have less than 10 hours to pre-load tonight.

If you still haven't started since pre-load became available last week, be prepared for a wait as the download is a giant 58GB (35GB for the single-player campaign, and 36GB for multiplayer).

WWII deals are available at various retailers, with the best PC price at GMG for 19% off at $48.44 for the Standard Edition, while Deluxe clocks in at $80.74 (comes with Season Pass and other perks).

Call of Duty: WWII Pre-Order Bonus

All pre-orders of Call of Duty: WWII across all platforms will receive the multiplayer upgrade pack which gets you weapon unlock token and 2XP plus a zombies camo pack. Unfortunately, this is one of those games with different pre-order bonuses depending on the retailer.

For PC gamers buying from GMG, you'll also receive the Divisions Pack of five Premium Gear Sets as a pre-order bonus. For console gamers, the Division Pack is a GameStop exclusive pre-order bonus. At Walmart, you'll find a COD-themed pouch as an additional pre-order bonus (to store coins with?).

The "Pro Edition" listed above is also a GameStop exclusive that essentially packages WWII and the Season Pass into a Collectible Steelbook case. With the Season Pass retailing at $49.99, you will actually reap some savings ($10) by going with the Pro Edition at GameStop. Whether or not this is a worthwhile purchase is another story altogether.

Finally, Best Buy is including Call of Duty: WWII as one of the titles qualifying for the $10 rewards certificate pre-order bonus. Beyond that, we see no other additional bonuses listed at Best Buy.

Call of Duty WWII Deluxe Edition

On the PC, you'll find the Deluxe Edition available at a majority of authorized retailers. This comes in digital format only and essentially mimics the GameStop Pro version in that it also includes Call of Duty: WWII's Season Pass. In addition to the Season Pass, you'll also receive 1,100 in Call of Duty points (the in-game currency) along with a Carentan Bonus Map.

News:: Get ready for Nioh's PC port with this quick trailer

Team Ninja is bringing its take on FromSoftware's Souls series to PC with Nioh: Complete Edition next week. To get everyone hyped for the 4K, 60 FPS gameplay, a brand new trailer has been uploaded with a bunch of accolades and a small look at some PC exclusive armor. The Dharmachakra Kabuto helmet is mostly just a nod to Valve's digital juggernaut, but I can dig it.

News:: Deals: $20 No Man's Sky, $4 Life is Strange in Day of Dead Sale

Digital retailer Green Man Gaming is offering an extra 15% off coupon for select titles during Day of the Dead. The sale is pretty limited time and will end tomorrow at 11am Eastern. But in this short burst of a sale that started up yesterday morning, we've spotted a few gems in pricing.

You can now pick up the infamous No Man's Sky for a reasonable price of $20.40. Believe it or not, the controversy-filled title has now turned a page of sorts as recent reviews are in the "mixed" camp versus outright "mostly negative." Those who are interested or have been playing can probably speak better to its recent value and if you're thinking of picking the game up we suggest checking through latest gameplay videos and reviews.

Other good deals in this sale include Life is Strange Complete Season for only $4.25, Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Anniversary Celebration for the same $20.40, and the indie rogue-like FPS title Strafe for $11.36. You'll also find a bunch of 2K titles and select Capcom titles for cheap below.

News:: This week's Splatoon 2 weapon is the Jet Squelcher

What's this? A new Splatoon 2 weapon for the weekend, but announced on a Thursday, rather than a Friday? This triggers my love of routine, but I'll continue to report it undaunted.

This weekend will see another weapon added to the inky arsenal of Nintendo's popular shooter, and it is the turn of the Custom Jet Squelcher, with is more or less identical to the standard Jet Squelcher, but switches out the attachments for a Burst Bomb sub and an Ink Ray special.

The new weapon goes live early tomorrow morning in Japan, which indicates that North American players will get their hands on it tonight, at 19:00 PT/22:00 ET, with Europe following in the small hours of tomorrow morning, around 04:00 CET.

Happy Squelching!

News:: Put your NFL team on your Xbox One controller for $95

Statistically speaking, your favorite football team probably sucks. In a season overwashed by mediocrity, there is no team without a glaring fatal flaw. Maybe, maybe, the Eagles are the exception, but Philly fans know better than to let their hopes get too high.

Now you have the opportunity to put your under-performing team on your Xbox One controller. Xbox Design Lab has a new customization option where all 32 NFL team logos are available on top of a sterile white controller. They look pretty okay!

The problem is the price. Xbox Design Lab controllers already start at $80; these run $95, albeit with a free engraving. Anyone looking to spring for rubberized grips is going to push that over $100. No part of the NFL fan experience is cheap. (Imagine being so sad that you paid $100 to put a Cleveland Browns helmet on your controller.)

Anyway, here's what my controller would look like if I were going to buy one.

News:: Reggie: Nintendo is 'aware of the concern' of losing valuable save data on the Switch

Losing save data for a massive game just sucks. I remember back in the day having batteries die out on Game Boy and SNES cartridges, dealing with corrupted PlayStation memory cards, and so on. Data management as a whole is just a pain in the ass, and Nintendo isn't making it any easier on the Switch.

For those who aren't aware, the Switch is a bit obtuse when it comes to save data. While Microsoft and Sony have cloud save technologies, or easy ways to backup your data physically, the Switch does not. Speaking to Mashable, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime claims that Nintendo is "aware of the concern," and that they're looking at a solution:

News:: 'Wolfenstein II' is definitely not 'Doom'

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is experiencing a serious case of opportune timing. It's a game all about shooting Nazis, but that's not new for the franchise -- what's new, this time around, is the social climate in the US. Nazis are in the news and marching with tiki torches on the streets. Members of the Ku Klux Klan are donning their cloaks in broad daylight. The President has invited white nationalists into the White House. Wolfenstein II's goose-stepping villains and its themes of a complacent, Nazi-ruled America are shockingly relevant in 2017.

But how does the game actually play? Wolfenstein is, at its heart, an action-heavy first-person shooter packed with all manner of ridiculous weapons and abilities. Shooting is its main focus -- and, in the following discussion, it's also ours.

News:: Danganronpa producer Yuichiro Saito leaves Spike Chunsoft

Yuichiro Saito, producer of the popular Danganronpa series, has announced his resignation from developing studio Spike Chunsoft.

An initial tweet announced his termination with the company as of the end of October, but has since been replaced with a much cuter tweet, in which Saito, also know by the moniker Shirokuro P, is seen celebrating at a surprise farewell bash held by his fellow Spike colleagues. Saito was adorned in a Doraemon onesie, given as a goodbye gift.

Saito mentions that he hopes to see the psychedelic mystery series continue to grow without him as well as somewhat confirming that he is leaving to produce console games elsewhere, or, as he puts it, in a "new world."

News:: BlizzCon is almost underway, and there's already pin trading

It's the day before BlizzCon, and all through Anaheim...there's pin trading. Yep, this year after visiting registration you'll be grabbing the customary "goody bag," which includes a backpack filled with blind-box items this year. As you might have guessed, collectors have posted up outside of the convention center, trying to peddle their wares and get every last rare pin (if you're here, the best gathering spot is near the fountain).

I was first introduced to pin trading back in the mid 2000s after witnessing the craze at Disney World. Since then plenty of other conventions have emulated the practice, including PAX and previous BlizzCons. But this year it's a little more active as folks are given a taste out of the gate -- and despite the obvious marketing ploy, I actually really dig that the climate is a little more social than usual.

Tomorrow is when everything is really starts. The keynote (which we'll be covering) kicks off at 11AM PT, which will bring all sorts of announcements for Blizzard's stable outside of Diablo III, which is not making an appearance this year. Until then you can live vicariously through these photos of the check-in process and the aforementioned goods.

News:: My Nintendo swaps around European rewards, a few are Metroid related

If you still happen to log into My Nintendo and live in Europe, you'll find some new rewards waiting for you. You can nab 50% off A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening DX, as well as 40% off Metroid Prime Hunters for a bit of gold points (read: currency you get after buying stuff). For the freemium Platinum currency you can nab 20% off Art Academy: Atelier, New Art Academy, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, or Metroid Prime: Federation Force, or 30% off Tank Troopers.

One of the most baffling parts of this service is the lack of real Switch support. I mean we're getting to the point where any points you have earned from Switch purchases are nearly going to expire, and there's essentially nothing to spend them on within the Switch ecosystem.

Maybe Nintendo is doing their patented "wait and see" big launch type of deal with their online service, but the idea that you can't use your points to buy some sort of voucher code for a first-party game, and potentially have them expire, feels bad.

News:: Assassin's Creed in-game photo exhibition to take place in London

Many open-world games now feature a Photo Mode, allowing for player's to unleash their inner-David Bailey and create some really cool still images. Well, Ubisoft plan to progress this a stage further, by holding a one-day exhibition to showcase shots captured within Assassin's Creed: Origins.

The "Time Travel" exhibition, which will take place tomorrow at London's Hospital Club, will display in-game photography captured by "leading Instagram travel photographers," who were tasked with shooting the best stills they could of the game's lavish Egyptian setting. Each photographer was limited to picking just two final images for exhibition.

"The ACO ‘Time Travel’ photo exhibition is the perfect way to celebrate the launch of game and showcase some of the most beautiful in-game pictures ever captured from a videogame," said Ubisoft UK's Digital Manager Sam Conisbee. "It’s been an absolute pleasure working with four of the most talented travel photographers, and they’ve truly brought Assassin’s Creed Origins to life through this exhibition."

If anyone is in the area and fancies checking out the images chosen for presentation, the Time Travel exhibition will be open from 10am until 5pm tomorrow, Friday November 3, entry is free.
