News:: The second round of the TMNT-themed Splatoon 2 splatfest comes to the inevitable conclusion

The second round of the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtle-themed splatfest ended yesterday. Players in the United States and Europe fought it out on Nintendo's Switch shooter Splatoon 2 to decide who rocked their world more, Michelangelo or Donatello?

Despite Mikey taking a very comfortable 55% of the public vote. Team Donnie pulled back both Solo and Team play points to give the mechanically-minded ninja (and team captain Marina) the 2 - 1 victory. I love ya, Pearl, but who had the wrong horse in this race, sister.

Donatello will now go on to get destroyed by second finalist Raphael in next weekend's Grand Finals. Incidentally, this is the second time this tourney that the winner of the popularity vote actually lost when it came to match points. Kinda shows how torn the community is when picking their favourite hero in a half-shell (and kinda raises questions about the splatfest system, but shush.)

The Raphael vs Donatello splatfest will begin May 18 in the U.S and May 19 in Europe.

News:: Here is a better look at Shonen's 50th anniversary Famicom Mini

A few days ago, Japan's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine revealed it had partnered with Nintendo to create a special edition variant of the Famicom Mini. Containing 20 games based on Shonen anime and boasting a gold paint finish, the mini console looked positively sleek. Nintendo has now uploaded a trailer of the device and confirmed the price point and game selection.

News:: ‘Lawbreakers’ studio Boss Key shuts down

Boss Key Productions, the studio founded by Unreal and Gears of War designer Cliff "CliffyB" Bleszinski, has shut down. The small company spent years making the competitive shooter Lawbreakers, but when that game fizzled, the studio sped out the game show-esque shooter Radical Heights to tap into the battle royale craze. Apparently, that wasn't enough to save the studio, Bleszinski wrote in a public letter on Twitter.

News:: Fortnite's 'Infinity Gauntlet' event ends tomorrow

The out of nowhere Fortnite/Infinity War crossover will be coming to an end soon; tomorrow, in fact! Epic Games has announced that Thanos will be leaving Fortnite's realm at an undisclosed time tomorrow.

Today will be your last day to wield the Infinity Gauntlet and wreak havoc on your foes. I didn't get a chance to try this out, so I might just have to hop on to see if I'm worthy enough to don the gauntlet.

News:: New Rainbow Six Siege trailer showcases upcoming Villa map

Ubisoft have released a new trailer showcasing a brand new map for tactical online shooter Rainbow Six Siege, ready for all your trap-setting, floor-crawling needs.

The new location, "Villa," will be available as part of the game's new season Operation: Para Bellum. As with the start of any season in Siege, we can also expect balance tweaks, bug squashes and exciting new Operators - locked, loaded, and ready to send headlong into the intense, twitch-inducing shooter.

Villa, as you can see in the video below, is a rustic rural home, complete with a rock-walled garden, a beautiful fire-lit study, and an extensive wine cellar. Of course, once Ash, Ela, Sledge and crew get involved, it's unlikely to hold its serene, classy presence for long.

Operation: Para Bellum will be revealed in full on May 20, when we will no doubt get to see more of the new locale as well as getting a look at the new doorkickers headed to Siege's ever-expanding roster.

Rainbow Six Siege is available now on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

News:: 'Resident Evil' film team is making the 'Monster Hunter' movie

We last heard the Monster Hunter movie was still in the works back in September 2016, but selling 8 million copies of this year's Monster Hunter: World might have sped things up. According to Variety, the film adaptation has snagged Paul W. S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich, who directed and starred, respectively, in the long-running Resident Evil movie franchise.

News:: LawBreakers and Radical Heights studio Boss Key closing down

With the fast-paced multiplayer shooter LawBreakers failing to catch on in any significant way and developer Boss Key Productions quickly shifting gears to the battle royale craze with its fun but very rough Radical Heights, the studio's future has looked uncertain at best. Despite the last-ditch effort, "it was too little too late," according to founder Cliff Bleszinski. Boss Key is "effectively no more."

Before the studio announced Radical Heights, it noted that LawBreakers "failed to find enough of an audience to generate the funds necessary to keep it sustained in the manner we had originally planned for and anticipated." Boss Key also said that a pivot to free-to-play would be too resource-heavy.

It's clear now that Radical Heights wasn't the silver bullet Boss Key sorely needed to stay in business. The game's servers are expected to "remain up for the near future," according to Bleszinski.

News:: New accessibility-focused Xbox One controller leaks

A wild new Xbox One controller has seemingly surfaced, and if reports are to be believed, it's a special piece of hardware indeed. Following a leak posted by Twitter user h0x0d, Windows Central has reported that the device is designed with accessibility in mind, hence those oversized A and B buttons.

Adding to the speculation, ResetEra user baron_calamity claims to have tried a prototype a couple of years ago. "How it works: It is meant to be used with normal control. It could be used to give extra buttons like foot pedals if you have trouble reaching and activating certain buttons. The main use case is someone (care taker / therapist) would play with the disable person, allowing them to control certain aspects of the game while a caretaker controls the others. Also certain games that only use a couple of buttons and the d-pad the person could play the game unassisted depending on their ability."

Some specifics for the finished build are unclear. "The giant buttons on the version I used were just buttons. They weren't even pressure sensitive so they weren't great for driving games if they were replacing the triggers. If they have greater functionality in this version, that would be great."

I'm not sure if this will make the cut for Microsoft's E3 showcase, but that'd be something.

News:: Shocker: Marvel's Inhumans cancelled by ABC

Despite months of passionate campaigning from the large and loyal fanbase of Marvel's Inhumans, ABC has cancelled the venerable superhero show. After eight memorable episodes from the man who ruined Dexter, the Marvel Television-IMAX collaboration is no more.

We're kidding about the show being good, of course. To call Inhumans a turd would be an insult to perfectly good fertilizer.

We watched all of Inhumans so you don't have to (our review of the first and only season here), and we can safely tell you that you aren't missing anything important to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show featured subpar acting and action choreography, inexplicable music cues, cheap sets, an inconsistent tone, constant and pointless flashbacks, unbearable characters, fluctuating motivations and a bizarre subplot involving weed farmers in Hawaii.

This was a real television show.

The show ended up being a big loss for IMAX, who provided its cameras for the filming of the first two episodes—turns out it wasn't a great idea to give the showrunner of Iron Fist a second Marvel show. Meanwhile, ABC's good Marvel show that has a real fanbase, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., is the only ABC show whose fate is unconfirmed.

News:: Final Fantasy XI mobile reboot gets new screenshots

Although details have been pretty scarce over the years, it's safe to say the Final Fantasy XI reboot for mobile devices has been progressing quite nicely, especially if these new screenshots found on a Nexon job listing are anything to go by.

What we do know so far is that it'll be running on Unreal Engine 4 (hence the new look) and will still aim to retain the original story, while also containing new features such as “Dynamic Events,” and an enhanced battle system that will be faster than the previous game (while still retaining things like job commands, skill chains, and previous features).

News:: Microsoft may launch an accessibility-focused Xbox One controller

Microsoft has a long-running history of courting gamers with accessibility needs, and it now looks like that might include a gamepad built with those players in mind. Well-known leaker WalkingCat has obtained an image of what looks to be an Xbox One controller designed with accessibility in mind. The peripheral appears to revolve around two giant buttons that would be easy to use without the precise finger dexterity you usually need. There's also a row of grooved icons (potentially touch-sensitive buttons) that reflect common Xbox functions, suggesting that gamers won't have to wade through menus that might be difficult to navigate.

News:: Ariana Grande will be performing a song with Nintendo Labo tonight

I'm not sure why Ariana Grande keeps randomly appearing on Destructoid, but the lady has a penchant for promoting herself through gaming. Tonight will be no different, as Ariana Grande is set to appear on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon" to perform her latest single using Nintendo Labo. Yup, her and "The Roots" will be using cardboard instruments to recreate a pop song; Nintendo Labo is seriously diverse.

Fallon, speaking to IGN UK, said, "We made a full-on band using Labo. I love that Nintendo does stuff like this. I mean what is this? Why would you even think of this? Only they could do something like this. We met with Nintendo and they showed us a bunch of cool cardboard things that you can make. We used the Variety Kit and we made a keyboard. We asked if we could make other cardboard things like guitars and they [Nintendo] said, 'Of course! We'll help you do it.'"

As much as I don't care for pop music, I'm pretty damn interested to hear what this sounds like. I'm not sure I'll catch this when it airs, but the glory of the internet age should have it uploaded shortly after. Honestly, now I kind of want Nintendo to make a Labo guitar.

News:: Bethesda announces ‘Rage 2’ with a hype teaser

Rumors of a sequel to id Software's 2011 post-apocalyptic shooter Rage have been swimming around for years. News:: Famed composer Nobuo Uematsu is working on the Final Fantasy VII Remake

While some of the news from the Final Fantasy VII Remake has been discouraging, mostly in terms of the lengthy timeline and the possible scramble to reevaluate this monumentally important project, I'm still on board with the idea of it.

The footage Square Enix has shown so far with the re-imagined Advent Children-esque characters is neat, and the remake, if released, don't desecrate the original or blow up all existing copies of it, Mission Impossible style. I'm ready to give it a chance. My enthuiasm has been particularly bolstered by news that Nobuo Uematsu, one of the most famous composers working in games right now, and the man responsible for myriad classic Final Fantasy tunes, is working on the remake. This was confirmed by producer Yoshinori Kitase at a Final Fantasy event in Japan:

“I’ve worked on numerous titles with Uematsu-san, and while I’m currently working on the production of Final Fantasy VII Remake, it’s actually been since Final Fantasy X that I directly worked with Uematsu-san. So when I first went to ask Uematsu-san to come work on the music for the remake, I thought he would give me the cold shoulder since he had already left Square Enix and found success.”

If there was ever an upcoming release to be wary of this is it, but Square is making baby steps to get us on board.

News:: Rumour: Data-mined BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle beta reveals DLC roster

Over the weekend, players got a chance to get their mitts on Arc System Works' upcoming crossover fighter BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle during a open beta. Of course, wily hackers have managed to mine the beta for info, seemingly unveiling the game's DLC roster.

Cutting Room Floor admin Ehm tweeted out their findings once they got into the game's code, discovering a series of initials that correspond to character brands and names. Simple guesswork is all that's then required to ascertain the characters supposedly headed toward the anime fighter, post-release.

From Ehm's findings it looks like BlazBlue's Izayoi, Mai Natsume and Nine the Phantom, Persona 4 Arena's Akihiko, Labrys and Mitsuru, and Under Night In-Birth's Merkava, Mika and Yuzuriha will all be asking for your pennies in the month's after Cross Tag Battle hits the shelves.

Of course, none of this is official, but it looks pretty snug, so there's little reason to doubt it. The BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle beta closes today, although there will be an offline demo  made available to download on PS4. This demo will be available to all, although only digital pre-order customers will have access to the same 20 characters from the beta.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle launches on PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch in Japan on May 31. It will follow a few days later on June 5 in North America, with Europe to follow sometime this Summer.

News:: Stardew Valley launching for Vita on May 22

Stardew Valley's long and winding road to the PlayStation Vita is about to come to an end. As announced on its blog, developer ConcernedApe confirmed the long-awaited port of the acclaimed indie game will be made available for Vita on May 22. As previously announced, the game will support cross-buy, so anyone who already has it for PlayStation 4 will be able to download the Vita version too.

Nothing short of an absolute phenomenon in the gaming community, Stardew Valley has sold well across all platforms and continues to see updates, including the highly anticipated multiplayer mode currently in Beta. As a reminder, multiplayer will not be supported on Vita.

News:: Wolfenstein II seems to be a whopping 23 GB on Switch, much bigger than initially listed

Bethesda is typically the king of debuting new insane file sizes for consoles. The PS4 and Xbox One require installs regardless of whether or not you own a game on physical media, so carvng out space for 40GB, especially before external HDD solutions were available for PS4, was a pain. While the Nintendo Switch doesn't neccesarily have that same problem, it can get rough fighting for space on an SD card, especially when some games require an additional download.

You might need to make room for Wolfenstein II, as a new listing for the game reveals that it'll require 23GB of storage, much more than the initial listing of roughly 14GB. The listing even notes it has to be "at least 23GB," as the download presumably doesn't include patches or DLC.

If you don't have an SD card in general and are running off system storage, you may need to plan for this too.

News:: God of War holds firm as Destiny 2 makes re-entry in this week's UK Charts

For the most part, this week saw little change in the premier spots of the UK video game charts. Sony's smash-hit God of War, as we all knew it would, continues to hold a lock on the number one slot, followed by Nintendo's Donkey Country Country: Tropical Freeze at number two and the seemingly unshakeable Far Cry 5 at number three.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 continues to enjoy a resurrection in the wake of big-screen blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War, while Ubisoft's Egyptian adventure Assassin's Creed Origins also found its way back into the big leagues.

Activision's sci-fi epic Destiny 2 has also found itself back in the Top Ten for the first time in a long time. The space-shooter has obviously been scooped back off the shelves by returning fans keen to check out recent expansion Warmind. Take 2's Grand Theft Auto V, already bored of spending one week outside the Top Ten, returned at number nine.

Elsewhere in the charts, open-world bloodbath Conan Exiles debuted at number 13, and re-entries were made by Forza Horizon 3, Horizon: Zero Dawn and a huge return for Sony's Shadow of the Colossus remake, which leapt from number 38 to number 15.

News:: A new generation of high school athletes will play eSports

At the college level eSports are set to explode as more school-supported programs sprout up every day. But officially sanctioned high school esports are essentially nonexistent. Many teachers (and parents) still see video games as a waste of time. Teens looking for competitive team play could previously only find it in the unsung volunteer efforts of online leagues. They've been making do on their own for years, but they can't offer meeting spaces to practice and connect, or validation from adults and authority figures.

News:: Overwatch anniversary event date and new Junkrat skin revealed

As of next week, Overwatch will have been out for two years. As I've said several times it feels like it just came out, and it's hard to believe that the PC edition has been updated with tons of free content for $40 at launch. Loot box shennanigans not included, I've gotten a lot of playtime out of it.

Blizzard is once again celebrating the anniversary of the game, and starting on May 22 through June 11 you'll be able to partake in a new special event on every platform. It'll bring 50 cosmetic items into the fray, as well as another deathmatch map called Petra. All the old items will also be coming back to scoop up for the limited window.

The most important news however is the expansion of the deathmatch mode -- Blizzard promises "placement matches, skill rating tiers, and leaderboards" for the event. There's also going to be a free weekend event from May 25 until May 28. If you're on PS4, PS+ is not required according to Blizzard. Oh, and a "Legendary Edition" is coming on May 22 with "Legendary, Epic and Origin skins for a total of 15 skins with purchase."

If you want to check out the new leaked Junkrat skin from the Brazilian Overwatch Twitter, you can find the mirrored video here.

News:: Last week for Avengers: Infinity War to be on top?

As you would expect thanks to no competition and resound popularity, Avengers: Infinity War is landing back on top of the box office this weekend. The movie only dropped a respectable 46.1 percent in its third frame, and open with a fantastic $200 million in China. It is now the fifth highest grossing film worldwide, and is currently on track to cross the $2 billion mark, a feat only three other films have accomplished -- Avatar, Titanic, and The Force Awakens

The real test for it will be Deadpool 2 opening next week. With some real competition in the exact same genre we'll be able to see how Infinity War's legs are and thus how well it will do both domestically and globally. It'll have to stand up pretty strong to hope to out earn the forever legs of Black Panther, but it could do it. And don't misinterpret this as the film under performing in any way. This is more of a discussion of if it will make stupid amounts of money or really stupid amounts of money. Either way, Disney will be Scrooge McDucking it for years to come off this box office.

News:: PlatinumGames at work on action game set to 'flip the genre on its head'

At the BitSummit gaming industry convention - which took place in Kyoto, Japan this weekend - developer/publisher PlatinumGames announced that they are working on an all-new top secret action game.

Speaking with the press, Producers Hideki Kamiya and Atsushi Inaba revealed that the new title was in the works, and that it is set to "flip the (action) genre on its head" with its innovation. No more information was forthcoming or even hinted at, with the project being so secretive that most of PlatinumGames' own employees don't know the details.

The developer are already renown for their intriguing, frenetic and somewhat chaotic action titles such as Bayonetta, NieR: Automata and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. It will be interesting how much more eclectic and stylistic the company can take their brand of violent-carnage-meets-haute-couture designs.

News:: There's a wild rumor that the next Star Fox is a racing game: would you play it?

Nintendo seemingly is willing to try new things with the Star Fox franchise. While it started off as a vehicular rail shooter it eventually branched off with action adventure and tower defense spinoffs. According to a crazy rumor, Nintendo might extend that list to "racer."

Although the logo for a game called "Star Fox: Grand Prix" has been circulating for some time, leading most people to believe that it's fake, several folks on Twitter, reddit, and 4chan have been booming about it again. Allegedly the Switch title will be a "mix between F-Zero and Diddy Kong Racing," with "adventure mode, bosses, and a hub world." That's all low-hanging wishlist fruit right there, that people have been pining for since the likes of Crash Team Racing.

Let's take a tempered look at the situation. Right now we have no idea what Retro Studios is working on. Originally we assumed it would be Metroid Prime 4, but we've since learned that the job is going to a "talented new development team." Ever since Tropical Freeze Wii U wrapped, Retro has been behind closed doors, toiling away on a new project. That could be Grand Prix I guess? If it's real we'll likely find out at E3 as Retro has been quiet long enough.

Realistically, all of these unsubstantiated rumors could amount to nothing. Other than the word of soothsayers and the proliferation of logos that have no official Nintendo documentation on them, we need to chalk this up as a strong rumor. But still, if it was real, I'd probably play the hell out of it.

We need more racers at the moment, and the concept of a Star Fox racer actually does fit with an in-universe bit of lore -- the G-Zero Grand Prix, included as one of the endings in Star Fox Command.

News:: Spoilerific details datamined from upcoming Xenoblade Chronicles 2 DLC

The datamining community, especially when it comes to specific games, has come through quite frequently in the past five years. Even if it's just spotting a few file names here and there thrown in during prep work for upcoming DLC those folks are vigilant, always willing to comb over the most granular detail to locate an announcement here and there.

That's just what they've done with Xenoblade Chronicles 2, in an effort spearheaded by a community member named Moosehunter. In a recent compliation, and this is entering spoiler territory as was noted twice in the titles above, it was revealed that the upcoming DLC could deal with the Aegis War -- the grand event that happened before the events of the game.

Drivers (read: NPC companions) are out, and instead you'll be controlling Lora, Addam, and Mythra with their own statlines. It also may provide Blade gifts for the main game, including Shulk. This would all be part of the season pass if you already own it, and the first major story DLC for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 when it arrives later this year.

Of course this might be placeholder info, or junk data to throw users off the scent; but it seems highly probable that Monolith Soft would hone in on past events to give the DLC a bit more pizzazz and keep it separate from the massive storyline so that anyone can jump in at anytime.

News:: SUPERHOT going big in Japan with SUPERHOT JP

SUPERHOT is a super cool game, but you knew that already. In fact, the game's coolness is known as far as Japan, where it's getting a spinoff of sorts in the form of what's currently being called "SUPERHOT JP". Coming from Tokyo-based indie publisher GameTomo, with feedback and guidance from the core developers at SUPERHOT Team, SUPERHOT JP will give fans of time moving when you move new, Japan-inspired environments, weapons, and violent scenarios to blitz through in slow motion. The game is also a standalone effort, meaning it won't require ownership of either SUPERHOT or SUPERHOT VR to play. It's also not a VR game, though GameTomo hedged by adding a "for now" to their FAQ page.

I'm all for having third parties try their hand at "remixing" other developers' designs (it reminds me of the old '90s trend of "unofficial expansions" to games like Command & Conquer) in this fashion. SUPERHOT JP is slated to get an actual title, and a release on PC and PS4 sometime in the future.

News:: Fan Project Super Mario 64 Online adds Sonic characters

In 2017 folks crafted Super Mario 64 Online (referred to as "SM64 Online"), a project that allowed folks to play with 24 players in a modded version of the N64 classic. It was promptly taken down after Nintendo got wind of it, and now it's coming back as the not so conspicious Net64 2.0.

As you might have guessed it's a 2.0 version of the game, and as a result of the new release, Sonic characters are in. Okay! That's cool, I get that. This is a new project under new management it seems (a user named Tarnadas), and allows for PVP events like CTF. The creators surmise that the project will "stay up for a little while longer [than the original]."

To all of you saying that "the press is ruining this low key production," the creators put a public YouTube video up of the project that now has close to 100,000 hits. The cat is out of the bag.
