News:: Toys"R"Us $100 gift card on sale for $85

Does anyone still go to the store? Because I do. For example, I somehow lost my mini-HDMI cable and with Black Friday coming up, I'd need to use as many panels as possible. You might ask why would a robot need a screen but listen, that's a story for another time. Now I could do Amazon one-day shipping but the local courier Amazon uses is the worst thing ever, so alas I was forced into picking up a cable at Best Buy (because there's generally traffic around Fry's Electronics).

Anyway, did I mention that there's a Toys"R"Us gift card deal going on thanks to Black Friday? You can pick up $100 worth for $85. That's a pretty hot deal, especially if you need to rely on a physical location for your gaming needs.

Toys"R"Us Black Friday Gift Card Deal

  • $100 Toys R Us Gift Card (Email Delivery) — $85  (list price $100)
  • PayPal Digital Gifts - allow up to 24 hours for egift card to arrive. US only.

Note: There are about 500~600 units left as of writing.

News:: Kathy Rain rides again on iOS and Android, this Nov. 23

Very little surprised me in 2016, at least not in the way Kathy Rain did. It was an exceptional adventure game, a genuine 9/10, accessible for both new players and veterans alike. Even now, it's my personal GOTY. Sadly, that doesn't translate into amazing sales. I'm not a marketing guy, so I couldn't tell you why, only that it was disappointing to say the least.

Well, at least now it's getting a second wind on mobile/tablet. I don't want to sound like a cheap shill, but it's a good fit with better exposure. Kathy Rain is a fairly intimate adventure, one you can easily play in short sessions, and without getting bogged down in complex puzzles.

I've already said enough about why Kathy Rain is an excellent thriller, but if you're into adventure games, well-plotted mysteries, or just strong female characters without the cynical pandering, then it's an absolute must buy.

Ride along with the kick-ass amateur sleuth on November 23, for the measly price of $4.99. C'mon, she deserves that elusive success.

News:: Overwatch's rework of Symmetra sounds fantastic

As someone who had a lot of early success with Symmetra in Overwatch but eventually felt forced into taking more generally valued roles like Mercy or Lúcio, I have been eager to hear specifics about Blizzard's promised rework of the shield-granting, teleporter-laying support character. And here they are, as detailed by game director Jeff Kaplan in this 12-minute developer update.

A patch is available now for testing on the PC version's PTR ahead of a wider release, and with it, Symmetra has become less of a "situational" pick. For starters, she's gained a new ultimate ability, one that allows her to build a shield generator that gives off area-of-affect shielding to teammates without needing line of sight. After filling her ultimate meter, you'll simply be able to toggle between choosing this new buildable item and the existing teleporter ultimate. That's a big deal for last-point defense.

Instead of manually placing shields on teammates one by one, which wasn't fun and often led to a "panicked rush" at the start of rounds, Symmetra has a photon barrier ability as a replacement. It's similar to Winston's barrier, except it's an elliptical projectile that moves along a trajectory. If that sounds like encouragement for Symmetra players to be even more aggressive and bold, I'm inclined to agree, and I'm frightened knowing how skilled some people already are with her. Yikes!

There are also tweaks to her sentry turrets. Symmetra is able to instantly place all six at the start of the match and then stock up to six turrets (rather than just three) for later use on a slightly-faster-than-before cooldown. Additionally, her teleporter has better survivability overall and the range on her primary fire is a little bit extended. Again, I am excited and scared for her new role in the meta.

The last feature mentioned in the video sounds terrific. At the end of a match, you'll be able to hit a new stay-with-group vote button to party up with your teammates and hopefully carry your hot streak into the next game. There have definitely been times when I wished such an option existed.

News:: Xbox One games stream to your Oculus Rift on December 12th

You can already stream Xbox One games to your PC. But what if you'd rather not make it patently obvious that you're playing Gears of War? You're in luck. Microsoft and Oculus are launching an app that, as promised, will let you send Xbox One games to an Oculus Rift headset attached to a Windows 10 PC. The software, which arrives December 12th, won't magically turn your favorite titles into virtual reality experiences. Instead, you're getting a Netflix-style virtual screen. This is more for private gameplay (say, to prevent your kids from seeing gore) or giving yourself a larger screen than you can fit in your den.

News:: Rayman Legends is now backward compatible...wait, what?

In a bizarre (and pro-consumer) move, Rayman Legends for Xbox 360 is now backward compatible on Xbox One. While the game received a native Xbox One version in recent years, I guess Ubisoft and Microsoft are trying to gain some goodwill by not forcing people to double dip on a game they already own. That is pretty admirable, though I think anyone with an inkling of interest in Legends probably bought the current-gen version.

Burnout Paradise was announced as part of the Games with Gold program for next month, but anyone with a digital or retail copy can enjoy the game today on their Xbox One. Disney Interactive's Pure is also now available for play, even though no digital copy exists. Suddenly, those two dollar GameStop discs are going to be worth something.

News:: The third season of Telltale's The Walking Dead begins December 20

We'll get a taste of season three of Telltale's The Walking Dead before the year is over.

This five-episode run is dubbed "A New Frontier" and will first pick up on December 20, a little later than expected, across the studio's usual long list of platforms (current- and last-gen consoles, PC, mobile). And before that date, Telltale will host an "extended first look" at The Game Awards on December 1.

If you've played any of the prior seasons of The Walking Dead and are wondering if that's Clementine up there, yes, yes it most certainly is. But she won't be the only character we'll end up worrying about:

"When family is all you have left... how far will you go to protect it? Four years after society was ripped apart by undead hands, pockets of civilization emerge from the chaos. But at what cost? Can the living be trusted on this new frontier? As Javier, a young man determined to find the family taken from him, you meet a young girl who has experienced her own unimaginable loss. Her name is Clementine, and your fates are bound together in a story where every choice you make could be your last."

News:: Black Friday deal for Civilization VI is 27% off for digital copies

Here's an offer you can't refuse, and it isn't because Gandhi's forces are just chilling at the border. You know, relocating his forces. No big deal.

One of the best Civilization VI deals for the Black Friday season has just appeared on Green Man Gaming. If you don't want to wait for GameStop's Black Friday deal of $40 (plus tax), this is as good as it gets without having to deal with an out-of-stock notice.

The 27% off discount spans the Digital Deluxe Edition too, which is technically at 28% off now that it's been dropped to $57.59. If you're a die-hard Civ VI fan, the extra content/map from the Deluxe isn't a bad deal either.

Black Friday Deals for Civilization VI

As a side note, besides GameStop's deal, there is also a Best Buy deal of $45 on Black Friday. If you have GCU, you should definitely consider waiting for Best Buy's deal as that'll tack on another 20% off.

This deal is set to expire on November 29, but we've seen digital titles "sell out" before (at their sales price) and at times publishers may intervene and end a sale early too, so apologies in advance if you're reading this days later and missed the deals.

News:: Grab Infinite Warfare for $1 at GameStop (with a crappy trade deal)

Looks like GameStop has an abundance of stock on a game nobody really wants. Either that, or it really needs stock of better games, because a new trade offer can net you Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare for one dollar. This deal, which runs on November 22 and 23, also extends to the Legacy Edition, otherwise known as the version with a good game included, but that obviously raises the price a bit.

The offer is to trade a single game and get the standard edition of Infinite Warfare for one Washington. Not content to only sell the standard version, the offer also extends to the Legacy and Legacy Pro Editions. A single game and $21 will get you the Legacy Edition or $61 will get you the Legacy Pro Edition.

So if you really want to get Modern Warfare Remastered on the cheap before the end of 2016, this seems to be your best bet. I don't think many people are going to care about getting the season pass, so I doubt the Legacy Pro Edition will sell out. Then again, extra zombie maps for the base price of the game and Call of Duty 4 sounds decent.

Oddly, there is no mention of platform. I know this probably applies to both Xbox One and PS4, but I'd really like to get the PC version of Modern Warfare Remastered for $21. That would be super nice.

News:: Xbox's Games with Gold for December includes Burnout Paradise backward compatibility

For once, the most exciting part of Xbox's Games with Gold comes not from a new release but from a very old release. It's the Xbox 360 and not the Xbox One that's the star of the show.

Xbox has announced December's Games with Gold, and 2008's Burnout Paradise is free and backward compatible next month. This is particularly notable because Burnout Paradise is largely considered to be one of the best open-world racing games of all-time, and it has been one of the most oft-requested backward compatible additions since the program's reveal at E3 2015.

While it's Criterion's Classic that's in the driver's seat, there are some really good games riding shotgun. On Xbox One, Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition is free the entire month of December. Outlast joins in from December 16 through January 15. On the Xbox 360 side of things, Outland is free the first half of the month, and then Burnout Paradise takes the wheel for the second half.
