News:: ARMS' 4.0 update introduces Misango to the battle

We already knew ARMS' 4.0 update was landing tomorrow, but the mystery character was never shown. I guess a small hint of a temple setting should have clued us into his theme, but Nintendo has pulled back the curtain and unveiled Misango unto the World. He looks kind of like a reject PS2 era mascot, but I can dig it!

Along with the Aztec stylings, it looks like Misango will be able to utilize poison punches and torpedo arms. I'm a big fan of anything that can create mind games for an opponent, so I might gravitate towards Misango in the future. As with both of the previous character, Misango will be free with the new update, so you won't have much excuse for not trying him.

News:: Valve is implementing a 'Trust Factor' for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive matchmaking

Despite Valve's efforts to combat cheating with its "Valve Anti-Cheat" system, cheaters still run free on Steam. This has had an impact on many games, but most notably is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Last year, Valve implemented something called "Prime Matchmaking" for the game (which also found its way over to DOTA 2) that required users tie a phone number to their accounts to enter a separate matchmaking pool. While the system did cut down on reports of hacking, Valve noticed that it caused some other side effects.

"The Prime status created a hard boundary in the CS:GO community," Valve states, "and players who might otherwise be perfectly happy playing together were separated." This more than likely came about when Valve required players to hit level 21 in order to use Prime, which potentially limited the pool to people who put in more time. Regardless of why, Valve has elected to evolve the Prime system into what it is dubbing the "Trust Factor."

This new system now goes beyond your playtime in CS:GO and actively monitors your Steam account. You may be a diligent player in Counter-Strike, but if you've been cheating away in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds or smurfing in DOTA 2, then you're going to have a bad time. "We...have been experimenting with matching players using observed behaviors and attributes of their Steam account," Valve says, "including the overall amount of time they had spent playing CS:GO, how frequently they were reported for cheating, time spent playing other games on their Steam account, etc." There are some other factors, but Valve is being mum about just what.

"We're not providing the list of factors in the Trust Factor matchmaking system...We don't want players to have to worry about any particular action while they're playing CS:GO or other games on Steam." That last bit is what worries me, since it implies Valve doesn't trust anyone enough to let them know how they are being monitored. I suppose this will cut down on cheating, in the short term, but it could potentially foster distrust within the community. It also doesn't speak well for what Valve thinks of its user base.

As long as you remain "a positive member of the CS:GO and Steam community," then everything should be fine. I'm not worried about my own actions, but some hackers can get others involved without their consent. I have been on servers where everything is geared towards gaming achievements or giving all players hacked abilities. That might potentially throw a wrench into the "Trust Factor" if people go on mass reporting sprees.

We'll just have to wait and see how Valve tweaks this system. Since Valve likes to be hands off with almost everything, I'm sure they'll just retract this when it fails and start over with something else as uninvolved (just look at Steam Direct).

News:: Saints Row infiltrates Agents of Mayhem today

It's no surprise that Saints Row favorite Kinzie Kensington has breached Agents of Mayhem. She's built an entire career around getting places she's not supposed to be.

Today, Agents of Mayhem added the "Safeword" DLC which sees Kinzie cross over as a playable character. The add-on runs $5 and comes with a handful of new agent missions tailored specifically to Kinzie. Developer Volition says that these missions shed more light on her backstory.

Kinzie should feel right at home as she appeared in the past few Saints Row games, and Agents is very much like a Saints Row game. She infiltrated what she knows best.

News:: Review in Progress: Star Wars Battlefront II

Star Wars Battlefront II has left me scatterbrained.

It's simultaneously the game I wish we would've gotten from DICE last time around and also a worst-case scenario with its far-reaching, impossible-to-ignore loot boxes and progression system.

I've had a few co-workers ask me how Battlefront II is going so far. My immediate reaction is to spout off a range of thoughts, touching on the middling campaign and its overuse of cameos, the much-refined space combat and hero vs. villain modes, and the dreadfully slow pace of unlocks, among other stray observations. I just can't seem to give them a quick, concise take. That's partially because I need to spend more time with the multiplayer, but it's also because this game is all over the place.

News:: Yes, Destiny 2 will get a new raid with the Curse of Osiris expansion

If you were to ask me, I'd say that the thing that distinguishes the Destiny series is the raids. I can get my shooty-RPG fix with Borderlands or Mass Effect, but no other game in the genre has done what Destiny has as far as raid content goes. So my chief concern with the first year of Destiny 2 was how quickly I'd get tired of running the same ol' Leviathan raid that launched back in September.

It was easy to be pessimistic about it. Bungie only released two raids during the first year of Destiny 1, and the second is generally considered to be the weakest of them all. In the time since, it only saw a new raid once per year, and the common wisdom was that Bungie was too ambitious to want to do more than that. With all the talk coming out of the studio lately, carefully using the terms "new raid activity" or "new raid content," it was easy to come to the conclusion that there would not, in fact, be a new raid with the launch of the first expansion, Curse of Osiris.

According to Bungie's stream today, it turns out there will be an entirely new raid to play with when the first DLC drops next month, sort of. Bungie is calling it a "raid lair," and explains that while it will have entirely new encounters and a new boss, it will be shorter than the current Leviathan raid and it will still occur on the planet-eating Cabal ship, just in different parts.

Toward the end of the stream, Bungie community manager DeeJ teased the entrance to the Eater of Worlds raid lair. It starts on the same catwalk as the main Leviathan raid, but instead of ascending up to the palace, it goes down into the depths. It solves the mystery of one of the big doors we've seen but haven't been able to open.

News:: Twitch users can gift subscriptions to fellow viewers

Twitch is continuing to roll out the many upgrades it promised at TwitchCon. As of today, you can gift 1-month subscriptions to anyone on Twitch, regardless of the tier. They don't auto-renew (you "currently" have to buy every month), but this could be helpful if you have a friend who can't afford to subscribe but wants to enjoy some of a channel's perks -- say, a subscriber-only Discord chat. It's useful for streamers, too: they can hand out subs as prizes for contests.

News:: Type stuff, see stuff in Terry Cavanagh's new game

Show, don't tell is the easiest way to convey what Constellation is about. Found at the perfectly appropriate JustTypeStuff.com, this free browser-based game-like thing has you typing words to make objects appear.

It's a neat little experiment -- a series of items and locations and filters that swap in and out as you find new additions. There's a startling weirdness in being transported from the quaint rural countryside to hell. All while hearts are floating up the screen.

If there is a traditional video game component to Constellation, I haven't found it. You can type "video game" and that brings up a score, but it doesn't seem to be rooted in anything more than patting you on the back for finding another thing Constellation can summon.

But, even if there is something deeper hiding, Constellation doesn't necessarily need it. It's interesting enough to just type some stuff and see what the game comes up with. Take a few minutes and go type some stuff.

It will run you £19.99 / 29,99€ / $29.99 and will occupy around 4.6 gbs on the Switch (or less than one NBA 2K18 save file). The game will also utilize HD Rumble, if that is your bag.

News:: Do Japanese games actually have a shot at The Game Awards?

For most of the games announced yesterday, the 2017 Game Awards have been a long time coming. From the moment The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild hit the Switch, we knew it was a contender. Same goes for Super Mario Odyssey and the first time we saw Mario capture a T-Rex. Horizon: Zero Dawn has been a lock as well and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has had a shot at the top prize so long as those voting could look past the fact it is still an Early Access game. Rounding out the nominees for Game of the Year is Persona 5, a milestone that is quite significant for the franchise.

All-in-all I wouldn't say I'm that surprised by these nominees. They're a good bunch and any one of them would make a fine GOTY winner. Any of them would, but if history is any indication, three of them don't have a chance. Odyssey, Breath, and Persona face a system that appears to be working against them. It’s not because they aren’t beloved or well-reviewed or crowning achievements in their respective genres, because they are. No, these titles simply seem to be at a disadvantage because of where they were made.

To understand where I am coming from you have to go back to the beginning. The Spike Video Game Awards, produced by The Game Awards’ showrunner Geoff Keighley, was the first modern attempt at giving the video game industry a standard bearer of an awards show. There have been a lot of tries at shit like this over the years. Anyone remember the Walk of Game or all those failed Gaming Hall of Fames? Despite airing on a network that is the equivalent of giving a dick measuring contest its own channel, the Spike VGAs could have been a real, honest shot at a legitimate awards show for gaming right up until the moment Madden 2004 was named Game of the Year.

Now, that’s embarrassing and not just in retrospect. It was embarrassing then to bestow your most prestigious award on an annual sports title over fellow nominees Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, or Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell. That’s not even including the fact Madden lost Best Sports Game to Tony Hawk’s Underground but ended up beating it for Game of the Year. A situation like that is silly but not uncommon as anyone who still watches the MTV Video Music Awards will attest to.

The whole first VGA ceremony is a mess – just look at the Best Handheld Game category – and a sports game taking the top prize hasn’t happened since. Instead, a pattern has established itself over the years on just what types of games will be nominated and win the overall Game of the Year award. It's a pattern that heavily favors games developed on this side of the Pacific.

News:: Review: Justice League

Warning: I'm going to discuss a thing that is obvious, but some may consider a spoiler so don't read if you've been in a cave for the entire marketing campaign of this movie.

Well they did it, folks. DC made two movies in a row that don't suck. So... good for them. Well done.

Justice League is not the mess it could have been, and that is actually saying a lot. The film was shot, reshot, lost Zack Snyder as a director, gained Joss Whedon, reshot again, removed mustaches, and then was mandated to come in under two hours by WB. Not to mention the fact that it had to introduce three entirely new heroes, establish a villain, expand a cinematic universe, and resurrect Superman (seriously, if you didn't know he was coming back stop reading).

With all that taken into consideration: bravo. Batman v. Superman was an incoherent mess, Man of Steel was tonally off, and even the fantastic Wonder Woman fell apart in the third act, so the fact that Justice League is a coherent film that's at the very least fun to watch actually stands as quite the accomplishment.

Now to tear it apart.

Although Nintendo have been enjoying dropping various teasers our way regarding their arena brawler, ARMS, we may be on their verge of having these surprises revealed tomorrow, when the Switch title is updated to Version 4.0.

The official twitter has also made rumblings recently that a new element, Poison, is being added to the game in the future.

News:: I finally figured out why Final Fantasy VII's music is so good

Final Fantasy VII is twenty years old, and I still love it dearly. I remember pouring over the game's early hours in my parent's basement, entranced by Midgar's neon lights and cyberpunk stylings. One of the most embarrassing moments in my young life involved my dad walking in on me, red-eyed and crying, after Aeris' now-infamous death and laughing before he walked back upstairs. In third grade, I lifted parts of FFVII's train graveyard sequence and used it for a school assignment. I'm not proud of that last point -- plagiarism is lame and all -- but you bet your butt my teacher was blown away.

Despite all of those memories, it's Final Fantasy VII's music that sticks with me the most. The game's soundtrack is a sonic triumph; a collection as varied as it is dynamic. What other game can go from orchestral chanting to mellow, beachy bossa nova tunes with such grace?

But I think there's a deeper reason that Final Fantasy VII's music is so memorable. It's not just that its soundtrack is the game's emotional pulse or the connective tissue between story beats. It's never that simple. After years of suspicion and a few hours of research, I've cracked the code between Final Fantasy VII's score.

News:: SNK saw a huge increase in sales and profit within the last year

Reporting in the Official Gazette, long-time video game developers SNK, who have been living the razor's edge for at least decade, announced that the period of Summer 2016 to Summer 2017 was very profitable for them.

Sharing their latest financial report, the Fatal Fury-helmers announced that sales for that period amounted to 4.281 billion yen, a billion yen higher than the same period one year earlier. In addition to this, SNK turned a net profit of 3.105 billion yen, which is an amazing increase on the 558 million yen secured for the previous period.

A chunk of this can be attributed to their global release of The King of Fighters XIV, an excellent title which still unfortunately failed to set the tournament scene alight. A DLC pack, featuring fan-favourite characters Whip, Vanessa, Rock Howard and Yamazaki, likely contributed to the huge profit rise, which puts SNK in the most financially secure position they have been in for some time.

A lot of the company's 90's arcade releases have also been made available on various modern formats through the ACA NeoGeo range. Though low in retail price, they are also equally cheap to produce, all of which helps to tip the financial scales in the company's favour.

SNK have been living on a wing and a prayer for some time, but hopefully their good fortune will continue and we'll see more great releases in the future. Perhaps a certain long-awaited crossover title? or even a Mark of the Wolves 2?

News:: Nintendo of Europe is going to be cracking down on street date breaking

Nintendo has had some problems with leaks in the past year or so. Okay they've always had issues with leaks, but recently several big games have had their street dates broken by retailers, and they're aiming to put a stop to it.

Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Nintendo of Europe confirms that they are cracking down on early distribution by "reviewing" its shipping schedule. Translation: they're basically going to get their games out to retailers as close to zero hour as possible, to ensure that even if someone breaks rank, it's not getting out say, a week in advance.

While it seems like fair play, smaller shops are worried. An unnamed "prominent UK indie store" said of the matter: "It's a bit of a worry. Nintendo is doing so well at the moment, and it's been a boost to us in what would have been a difficult year. If I end up getting stock late, then customers will just shop at the supermarket instead."

It's a tough issue, and Nintendo isn't the only one sparking the ire of indie outfits. Just recently Sony and the ESRB caught some flak for making it tougher for indie developers to physically distribute their games.

News:: Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation goes live in Japan

DMM's free-to-play browser game, Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation has now gone live in Japan. Koei Tecmo has released a new trailer and some info on the game's login bonuses to celebrate the launch.

The browser game features the DOA gals once again going on holiday to Zack Island, where they indulge themselves in some lying around,  a game of volleyball, a pyjama party, and more lying around. Joining the roster is new gal Misaki, who can be seen in the trailer below.

Venus Vacation has a selection of time-eaters to choose from, such as wardrobe management and the obligatory photography mode. I don't see Tina or Christie, I guess they weren't invited this year. Players participating in the game before December will receive "Gacha tickets" for their first seven logins and a limited edition swimsuit for Kasumi.

Those willing to fumble through the menus can download the client from the official site. The game is, obviously, only available in Japanese. This is a shame, as I was hoping to jump on and indulge in my ultimate fantasy: actually getting to go on vacation, anywhere, ever again.

News:: Super Bomberman R is practically a new game after a series of updates

Konami has been low key updating Super Bomberman R throughout the year, and it's worked out rather well for the game.

While I did enjoy it overall at launch it wasn't without its issues, some of which have been smoothed out due to content drops and performance patches. This week Bomberman R is getting a 3v3 Grand Prix mode, new "arena" maps, more multiplayer levels, a new "World 7" campaign with extra bosses, nine more characters (one of which is Goemon), and extra pets.

Every time I see "free DLC," "no microtransactions," and "Konami" in the same story, I have to do a double take. But here we are in 2017, and they did one thing right.

Scheduled to release on June 2, Deadpool 2 was due a trailer (though perhaps not as much as Avengers: Infinity War).

Finally, we've got something. It's not a full trailer, and contains only a hint of spoilers, but, true to Deadpool form, it's got humor. If you ever wondered what the progeny of Bob Ross fucking Deadpool would look like, now you know.

The teaser is spot on with its concept, the misdirections, and the lack of giving nearly anything away. If anything, it creates even more excitement for a highly anticipated sequel--and for a sequel, that's rare. Be sure to watch the credits! SECURITY: DALTON. Classic.

News:: Hellboy arrives to slap down the Right Hand of Doom in Injustice 2

The latest guest character is available for purchase in NetherRealm Studio's comic-book fighter Injustice 2, and it's none other than the dry-humoured half-demon himself, Hellboy.

Hellboy, creation of writer Mike Mignola, first arrived on the scene in the early 90's, building up a huge, dedicated fan-following through publishers Dark Horse Comics. The character hit the mainstream consciousness upon the release of Guillermo Del Toro's 2004 film adaptation.

Hellboy is now ready to rumble with DC's finest in the one-on-one fighter, where he utilises ugly brawling tactics, short combos and power moves to dominate the opposition. Hellboy, priced at six bucks, follows Raiden and Black Manta as the final member of Fighter Pack #2.

In related news, Injustice 2 launches on PC today, although Hellboy will not be available on that format until a later date. Injustice 2 is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

News:: Zelda: Breath of the Wild's newest free gift involves archery

Nintendo keeps the hits coming with Zelda: Breath of the Wild's news/tip channel experiment, designed to keep people interested in the game throughout the year. It's a pretty low-cost gamble too, as folks are still playing, Breath of the Wild is entering a ton of Game of the Year conversations, and there's still another story DLC coming.

If you happen to boot up your Switch (again, not Wii U) and check out its news channel you'll find an archery-centric tip, which informs players of the appropriate minigame that rewards players with mount rewards. Once again if you load up the game from the tip you'll earn an in-game item -- and this time it's five arrows.

It's not a lot, but given that you can just reload the channel again it can come in handy if you're short on Rupees!
