News::Assassins Creed Unity Review | Metal Arcade

Metal Arcade: Jason Bakker writes: Ubisofts longstanding Assassins Creed franchise arrives on next-gen consoles with breathtaking graphics, an all-new co-op campaign, deep customization, and improved parkour and combat gameplay mechanics. The sights of Assassins Creed Unity are truly something to behold, with realistic facial animation, great-looking character models, and a painstakingly recreated 1789 Paris, packed to the brim with NPC crowds numbering in the thousands. Parkour has been refined to allow for easier scaling of buildings, with dedicated controls for ascending and descending rooftops and smoother animation than ever before. Theres even robust customization and four-player cooperative online gameplay. Unfortunately, a dissapointing story and an uninspired protagonist keep Ubisofts first next-gen Creed outing from being a complete success.

News::Review: Tales from the Borderlands: Episode One - Zero Sum - Digitallydownloaded

"I have really enjoyed the narrative focus of the different Telltale Games releases over the last few years. I have always enjoyed a good point-and-click adventure and these games have always struck me as the natural evolution of the genre. They offer lots of story, good voice acting, some exploration and quicktime events that sit on top of decision making that has weight and adds replay value to the game. However, despite the fact I enjoyed the Borderlands games themselves, I had thought that this would be an off paring. Thankfully the execution is outstanding."

Dealspwn: "The Walking Dead Pack contains seasons one and two, and the bridging episode, 400 Days. Telltale's zombie-infested opus had a superlative first season, and even though the second hasn't quite matched up to its predecessor, it's still a damn fine example of narrative-driven adventure gaming."

News::Assassin's Creed Rogue Review - The Digital Fix

Assassins Creed Rogue is well-named inside Ubisofts universe, but also in the real world. You see, its really quite surprising this game exists at all. Assassins Creed: Unity is the big one, the first real current generation hidden blade-athon. But Rogue exists too, finishing off the story arc played out through Connor and Edward Kenway, to date. Its more pirating then - which is fun, of course - but also fits into the slot which Ezios Revelations did previously. Old characters are remembered, the best bits are repeated and the bad bits supposedly thrown away. Theres some novelty but most is left for the next big cycle over in Paris. Nothing shatters the earth but everything works very well, treading a well-trodden path. The fact its only on the last generation of consoles neednt cause concern; the fun to be had is as good as youve got up to this point.

From GameWatcher.com: "The reality is if you're looking for this kind of puzzle-action isometric fix, there's not a shortage of games out there which can offer it. So presumably Lara herself is the lure, however, like I said before the story and characters were, for me, anything but a strong point. That said, this is a decent game with enjoyable puzzle mechanics, a slick combat system and smooth luminous graphics. Just don't expect any surprises, you're getting exactly what you see."

News::Tales from the Borderlands, Episode 1: Zer0 Sum - NZGamer

NZGamer: "Telltale Games have been making a strong case of late for the argument that games dont need to be fun. Like any form of entertainment, they should be engaging, and fun as just one means to that end. With the likes of The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, Telltale proved what should be common knowledge - intrigue and emotional drama can be just as compelling as fun when it comes to game design. But, that doesnt mean that games cant be fun. Just as theres space in cinema for the both Bad Boys II and The Shawshank Redemption, gaming can accommodate both Bayonetta 2 and The Last of Us. And, after a handful of critically acclaimed drama game series, Telltale is returning to their roots with Tales from the Borderlands, a game built around lighthearted banter and ridiculous action sequences. A game built around fun."

News::Game of the Year #10 - Wolfenstein: The New Order

Mick Fraser: "What makes Wolfenstein: The New Order stand out, above all, is the overall sheen of quality. It looks beautiful on the new console hardware, and the voice work makes an above-average script sound great alongside searing explosions and cacophonous gunfire. From a balls-out opening salvo to a powerful ending that carries more dramatic weight youd expect, its a powerhouse shooter and one of the best games of 2014."

News::Do Episodic Games Really Work?

Ryan from Awesome Games writes: 'Weve all been there staring at our laptop screens, gripped as the final minutes of our favourite TV series slowly edges away. And when done right, instead of a sweet feeling of narrative satisfaction washing over us, these season finales bring about a sense of longing that cant be satiated until the new series is released. Its this kind of feeling that (we assume) episodically released games such as Tales from the Borderlands and The Wolf Among Us seem to aim for. But the question is, do they actually succeed?'

News::Tales from the Borderlands Episode 1 Zer0 Sum Review | GES

GES Writes: "Telltale Games are famous for their episodic graphic adventure games and this time they take us to Pandora with Tales from the Borderlands. These Telltale Games are always fun to play and also fun to watch, this one in particular was really funny. You will sit and giggle and laugh through almost the entire episode but just dont think to blink as you might miss a QTE (Quick Time Event) action to perform. The story takes place after the death of Handsome Jack, you play as two characters named Rhys (Not Rheese) and Fiona. You take turns to control them as they tell their story to an unknown character who kidnapped them for yet an unknown reason. As usual the characters are extravagant and over the top as we expect from this universe."

The Tomb Raider series journey back into relevancy, jump-started by the sleeper hit Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light in 2010 and then continued by the hugely popular 2013 Tomb Raider reboot, was a big success story for one of gamings most iconic series, proving that developer Crystal Dynamics still had it in a post-Uncharted world after a run of underwhelming titles that failed to set the industry alight."

GI: "Mojangs Scrolls is finally here after over a year of alpha/beta testing, and while a significant amount of polish and content has been added, the core gameplay hasnt changed much through the months. Utilizing a deck of spells, creatures, and structures, players do battle on a tactical hex grid, with the goal of destroying three of an opponents five totems. Its a mash-up of collectible card games and tactical tapletop games. Bringing the miniature characters to life out of their cards and positioning them in the perfect spot for battle is a satisfying science, and the progression loop has been tuned to make each game rewarding, win or lose."
