News::Monument Valley made back every bit of its dev costs in one week

Monument Valley , an isometric puzzle game that was the winner of an Apple Design Award, made back its development costs after just one week on the App Store. Even though it's a $4 app and had stiff competition alongside other premium games such as Hitman: Go, FTL, and Leo's Fortune, Monument Valley crossed the one million sales mark within four months.

Designer Ken Wong stated that the team is not rich by any measure, but recouping costs means that the team can remain together and finance another project. Wong said that all the team was shooting for was not to be rich, but to be sustainable.

Wong noted that the truly amazing thing to come out of the game's success was the response from fans. He stated that the team had received hundreds of tweets and emails from people who said they never play games and that Monument Valley was the first game that they had finished. He also hopes that the positive female protagonist will inspire young girls to get into game design.

News::Heres Why Rise of the Tomb Raider Needs to Be On PC and PS4

J Station X writes "From the disgruntled masses of PC and PS4 fans to the deafening cheers of Xbox One supporters, convinced theyd finally landed a blow to the PS4s unstoppable success, to the critics and unaligned gamers who simply asked wait, what?, the announcement that Rise of the Tomb Raider will be an Xbox exclusive come 2015 has been the talk of the town. And although the chatter of secret big money deals and sales and console wars clutters up the highways, we will eventually have to accept the fact that Rise of the Tomb Raider is going to be exclusive to Xbox One and Xbox 360 for whatever unspecified amount of time. But do PC and PS4 really need Rise of the Tomb Raider and where does the Tomb Raider franchise go from here? Read on after the break to find out."

News::Microsoft isn't making any friends by making Rise of the Tomb Raider an Xbox exclusive

GameZone's Joe Donato: "Tomb Raider has always been a multiplatform series. No example illustrates that more clearly than the first game, which I played, and loved, on the Sega Saturn. Raise your hand if you own a Sega Saturn. Yeah, Im not seeing a lot of hands out there. Despite that, my ability to play Tomb Raider on the console I owned informed my time with the series again and again, from the very first game to the reboot last year. Tomb Raider has never been an exclusive, and thats always allowed me to play it, through the ups and downs, through the best and worst entries, remaining a fan throughout."

News::Rise of the Tomb Raider will be the first of many sudden exclusives for PS4 and Xbox One

GameZone: "Rise of the Tomb Raider is not some catalyst; it did not start the trend of console exclusivity. However, seeing such a prominent title play favorites will undoubtedly bolster that trend, pushing it further up the list of options developers confront with every new game. In part thanks to this, a few short years from now, the IP venn diagram which Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo so frequently recolor may look radically different from its current shape."

News::DayZ Was Announced for PS4, But It's Not Exclusive to Any Platform

Dean Hall, the creator of popular zombie game DayZ, has spoken out to clear up some confusion about the recently announced console version. Though Hall announced DayZ for PlayStation 4 during Sony's Gamescom briefing yesterday, the game is by no means exclusive to that console. "DayZ is not exclusive to any platform," Hall said on Twitter. His tweet came in response to a fan who said exclusive games from third-party developers are "inherently anti-consumer" and "make no sense" in 2014. Hall said, "I agree," suggesting we're likely to see DayZ come to other platforms, including potentially Xbox One, down the road.

News::Ive Never Been Less Excited for Metal Gear Solid V Than I Am Today

CraveOnline: Hideo Kojima and Konami held a special event at Gamescom today, and when it concluded I felt let down. This likely wont hold true for fans of the Silent Hill franchise and its terrifying new demo P.T. (which apparently stands for playable teaser), nor those who showed up for a look into Mr. Kojimas thoughts. But for those watching for Metal Gear Solid info primarily, the event flopped harder than a supermodel taped to a cardboard box. Which, as we now know, is an incredibly awkward way to flop.

News::Battlefield Hardline's single-player campaign reminds me of Far Cry

Up until now, Visceral Games has concentrated on showing the multiplayer side of Battlefield Hardline. That's been fine, but unlike most other Battlefield titles, I'm actually somewhat interested in hearing about the single-player campaign this time around given the new setting.

The studio says the game is "inspired by the most popular crime dramas seen on television today," and here's the first real look at what that means in practice. After breaking out of a bunker, our protagonist scouts out a fortified trailer park, scanning and tagging enemies before going in for the arrest of high-value targets. It's a bit like outpost capturing in Far Cry 3 -- one of the game's greatest joys -- except you're not murdering every living soul.

Based purely on this short segment, Hardline is exceeding my expectations -- not that they were high to begin with after the lackluster single-player campaigns of Battlefield 3 and 4.

News::FIFA 15 Interview with FUT Producer Marcel Khun Friendly Seasons, Loans, and Concept Squads

Adam Cook: "Marcel is a sly one, tactically dodging the bullet that is the Ketchup question with the revelation that he doesnt even like the stuff. I dont have ketchup in my house. As a kid, I love it, but one time I ate it with a spoon from the fridge, and I ate so much I had to puke, and since then I cannot stand the stuff. And that seems a fitting start to my time with the FUT Producer for FIFA 15. Marcel Kuhn is a man that, like me, was once a big Career Mode fan, and has transitioned to FUT. Though he has worked on both, it appears he is a FUT addict, just like so many FIFA players. Im Austrian, I start with an Austrian bronze squad, then I build up to a silver squad, but I only move on once I win a bronze tournament. Unfortunately, there arent too many gold players, so theyre hard to find. Thats where FIFA 15 comes in. Every year I try to build an Austrian Gold team, but theres not enough players in the game. But this year my pain will be much shorter, because t...

News::Microsoft's gamescom press conference wasn't as bad as I expected

Microsoft's press conferences often leave me with cranial damage from head-to-desk impact, but their gamescom 2014 presser felt pretty okay to me. I'm excited to see Microsoft making an attempt to partner with more indies. After their poor policies left them with a bad name among the independent development community, it seemed like the PlayStation 4 had substantially more launch content than its rival in the form of indie ports.

In retrospect, with it becoming clear that Rise of the Tomb Raider is not as exclusive as they made it out to be, I'm quite miffed. During the conference, any games that were only timed exclusives, had clear visual and spoken indication of the stipulation. We've been getting more clarification that Tomb Raider is maybe just a prolonged timed exclusive, but the language used in the presentation was pretty obviously meant to make us think Rise of the Tomb Raider would only be on Xbox. That's messed up.

News::Hangeki Review l Twinfinite

Remember the good ol days? Wasting all of your quarters at the arcade, playing Space Invaders or Galaga. The searing rage that accompanies seeing your high score toppled by some random jerk. The adrenaline-fueled thrill of beating their high score and reclaiming your hard earned throne on your favorite arcade game. Back then, gaming was far more competitive; instead of playing to complete a game, gamers played to master them. Replaying levels endlessly trying to beat their personal, or friends, high score. This is the feeling Hangeki brings back. The wanting to master each bite-sized level, finishing it faster and faster to beat out all other players on the global leader boards.
