News::One Backpack, Two Super Mario Levels

One Backpack, Two Super Mario Levels

When you play video games as an adult, you have a lot of moments when you find yourself wishing you could be a kid again. Like this morning, when I came across a reversible Super Mario-themed backpack I would have worn until the straps fell off and my teacher asked me: "Shouldn't you have graduated at this point?"

News::WoW Subscribers down by 800,000. Will Warlords of Draenor Save It?

Once again, we see WoWs subscriber count dip to a new low. According to Times, It now stands at 6.8 million, down from 7.6 million from the last quarter. To put into perspective, the last time WoW stood at this low was in mid-2006, one and a half year since its release. News::Did Valve Just Secretly Release Source 2, and Does it Even Matter?

8CN: So it looks like Valve may have stealthily released their long-awaited Source 2 engine in a recent Dota 2 update. But what's the significance of releasing the Source 2 engine in this way, and why all the secrecy from Valve?

A newly announced first-person shooter is looking to bring competitive multiplayer back to the glory days, and the first trailer is promising. Despite the unfortunate name (which, to be fair, does fit with the '90s shooter theme), Toxikk looks like a refreshing throwback for Quake and Unreal Tournament fans.

News::Orbital Gear Review (Strategy Informer)

From Strategyinformer.com: "Competitive, 2D twitch-based deathmatch games seem to be few and far between these days. The brilliantly irreverent Nidhogg stands as one fine and recent example but other than that, there is little which really stands out. Enter then, Orbital Gear by Swedish developer Night Node. A furiously kinetic and enjoyable mech on mech death match brawler with a gravitational twist, just a few flaws hold the game back from greatness".

News::Namco's two-on-two fighter Rise of Incarnates enters open beta

Rise of Incarnates is that Bandai Namco fighting game that's supposed to be like the Gundam Vs. series but sadly, unfortunately, without any Gundams. If Steven hadn't previewed it, I likely wouldn't be aware it exists, but I am, so I might as well tell you that the beta is here.

And it's an open beta, at that, which means you can get right in. Would-be players can take Rise of Incarnates for a spin by downloading the client here, though it's worth noting a Steam account is needed. The beta will run through Sunday, August 17. Plenty of time.

I like the "Grim Reaper" doctor character. He rides on a wave of zombies, as shown below.

News::The Worst In Video Game Marketing

The Worst In Video Game Marketing

Before we ever get to play most video games, we see ads for them. Usually they'll get us excited about the next chapter in a favorite franchise, or even a brand new one. But sometimes they take things too far. We've seen loads of ads that are meaningless or, worse, in bad taste. Ill-advised. Offensive, even.

News::So long, RNG: Gods Will Be Watching update adds new difficulty options

Reading through Alasdair's review of Gods Will Be Watching , I don't know if I could put myself through some of the game's horrors even once, much less multiple times due to failure. Deconstructeam's Mercy update should help. It offers three new difficulty levels, two of which are free of the dreaded random-number generator (RNG), following player feedback.

  • Puzzle Mode: All the challenge of Original Mode, but without random factors in play. If you want to remove the element of chance from the game, this is the mode for you.

  • Puzzle Mode Light: The easier version of the game that also removes random factors and chance. If you want to remove the element of chance and face easier puzzles, this is the mode for you.

  • Narrative Mode: The easiest mode and a way to enjoy the game as a narrative experience, without a heavy challenge.

There are some miscellaneous fixes in the update, too. Good on you, Deconstructeam -- both for acting quickly to implement these changes and for coming up with that image.

News::Tom Clancys Rainbow Six: Siege - Impressions

CCC Says: "Tom Clancy sort of had a field day at this years E3. There were not one but two games that held his name. One was Tom Clancys The Division, a game that we have already previewed. The other, is a take on a more classic Tom Clancy game, Tom Clancys Rainbow Six: Siege. Rainbow Six: Siege is a more traditional competitive shooter that puts one team of operatives against another team of terrorists. It takes advantage of one of the big buzzwords of E3 this year, Asymmetrical Gameplay. The terrorists and operatives will have completely different objectives in every game, and will also have different tools that they can use to meet those objectives."
