News::Five LEGO Adaptations Id Like To See

Justin Ross from Pixel Gate writes: Im not going to joke around with any of you. Those damn Lego video-games have been pretty killer lately, especially the Lord Of The Rings one. It brought some things to my attention as well as causing me to throw my hands at my keyboard to write this piece on some things that I think deserve the Lego video-game treatment. Hopefully some of you can agree with me, and hopefully you guys have some neat ideas of your own.

However, I cant see much wrong with it at the moment besides a few minor problems that can be fixed."

News::Ethan: Meteor Hunter - As We Play I Expansive

Its a strange beast, Ethan: Meteor Hunter. Self-funded and self-published by its developer, Seaven Studio, it landed on the PC and PS3 back in October of 2013, but released on Steam (the version reviewed) on the 7th of February. It was met with extremely poor sales because thats what happens when you release a small indie game so soon after the release of a Grand Theft Auto title and the developers have been trying to beef up the games figures ever since. Being given the thumbs up by Steam Greenlight will no doubt help reinforce that interest.

News::Unrequited love: Videogame couples that never were

[Dtoid community blogger bbain laments lost love. Want to see your own blog appear on our front page? Go write something! --Mr Andy Dixon]

Hello everyone! Valentine's Day is today, and in the spirit of the holiday, I thought it might be fun to take a look at some of my favorite unrequited video game romances! These are instances where the game heavily hints at one character's attraction to the other, but neither character ever admits their feelings for one another. Their futures are left up to interpretation by the player, but I always hoped that these characters would end up together, even though it may have seemed very unlikely.

Also, if you think of any of your own examples, share your thoughts in the comments! Happy Valentine's Day!

News::A free-to-play model was considered for Evolve

Back when Turtle Rock Studios was working on Evolve for publisher THQ, the studio considered making the multiplayer title free to play, senior producer Mike Boccieri told Polygon. Of course, that path wasn't taken -- the game will be a full $59.99 at launch.

"That is not going to change down the track, well, we never say never about almost anything," he said. "But that's not anything that we have in the immediate horizon." 2K believes Evolve will "shine brightest as a triple-A title," according to Boccieri, which I think is accurate and falls in line with the publisher's catalog.

It doesn't take much effort to see how the game could be designed around a free-to-play scheme, but that's not to say it would have been a good idea. F2P can work, as evidenced by Team Fortress 2, Path of Exile, and Dota 2. So long as what we're getting is a full game's worth of content, I think it's for the best that Turtle Rock stuck with a traditional pricing model.

News::Review: Double Dragon: Neon

Beat-’em-ups are quite the strange genre to me. I grew playing many of them: Simpsons, X-Men, and Turtles in Time in the arcades were my jam. In fact, I’d say they are still my jam. That said, it’s easy to recognize their faults, which are really faults of the genre as a whole, even if those faults seem to melt away when playing with some buddies. Lining up attacks can be a chore and they’re generally painfully simplistic when it comes to actual gameplay.

Double Dragon: Neon is a carefully crafted love-letter to a genre and a time period. It is an '80s beat-'em-up through and through, but with one caveat: it has some of the best gameplay to ever grace the genre.

SteamWorld Dig will be out on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in March for $9.99/€8.99. While I think the latter system will be the way to go here, the game does support Cross-Buy (pay once for both versions) so that's not even going to be an issue.

News::Vertical Slice Demos Provide a Clear-Cut Advantage

Hardcore Gamer: In game development terms, a vertical slice, is a gameplay segment of finished or near-finished quality that showcases all the planned features of a game to potential investors. At the start of a project, these are a massive sink for time and effort, since they essentially involve doing all the hard parts of finishing a game to complete one 10-minute section. Generally, theyre seen as a bad practice. However, toward the end of development, its a lot easier to pull assets together for a vertical slice. Of course, if youre shopping your game around to publishers at that stage, youre probably in a lot of trouble, but a standalone vertical slice can also serve as a strong alternative to a traditional demo.
