Back when Turtle Rock Studios was working on Evolve for publisher THQ, the studio considered making the multiplayer title free to play, senior producer Mike Boccieri told Polygon. Of course, that path wasn't taken -- the game will be a full $59.99 at launch.
"That is not going to change down the track, well, we never say never about almost anything," he said. "But that's not anything that we have in the immediate horizon." 2K believes Evolve will "shine brightest as a triple-A title," according to Boccieri, which I think is accurate and falls in line with the publisher's catalog.
It doesn't take much effort to see how the game could be designed around a free-to-play scheme, but that's not to say it would have been a good idea. F2P can work, as evidenced by Team Fortress 2, Path of Exile, and Dota 2. So long as what we're getting is a full game's worth of content, I think it's for the best that Turtle Rock stuck with a traditional pricing model.
