News:: Review: Subnautica

Subnautica is an explorer's dream.

In the distant future, you're seemingly the sole survivor of a disastrous crash landing on a vibrant ocean planet. Stranded with little more than a lifepod and a rather magical fabricator that can turn resources plucked from the ecosystem into sophisticated equipment, it's up to you to figure out what happened to your ship, the crew, and how to get back to a home that's far, far away.

Unknown Worlds has fully launched Subnautica following a long but successful stint on Steam Early Access. The wait was worth it. This might be the best underwater game ever made.

News:: Is the community excited for Dragon Ball FighterZ?

The past open beta for Dragon Ball FighterZ felt a little tumultuous, but ultimately enlightening. After a rough first day, a brief extension allowed a larger swathe of interested Z fighters to get their hands on a couple of matches, training be damned. Even though I was ready to die on a hill about no training mode to explore the beta, the straightforward learning curve made my first couple of matches a breeze to get acclimatized to.

News:: Review: Assassin's Creed Origins: The Hidden Ones

"Have we done good?" Bayek asks Aya (now Amunet) toward the end of The Hidden Ones, the first proper expansion to Assassin's Creed Origins. Although Assassin's Creed doesn't always advertise it, there's a moral uncertainty permeating much of the series. Both the Assassins and the Templars share an ultimate goal of societal utopia, but they have conflicting ethical views about how to get there.

This perspective manipulation was best achieved in Assassin's Creed Rogue -- the only game seen through the eyes of an Assassin turned Templar. The Hidden Ones does it second best, eventually asking what sort of casualties are acceptable when in pursuit of a noble cause.

News:: ‘Overwatch’ adds Disneyland-style map ‘Blizzard World’

Back at Blizzcon 2017, Blizzard's big announcement for its hero shooter Overwatch was a new character Moira -- at long last, another healer for the lineup. But equally exciting was the reveal of a new upcoming map: Blizzard World, a Disneyland-esque theme park jam-packed with references to the studio's stable of games. Today, that map goes live -- along with a slew of new skins and other extras.

News:: You'll have no paradoxes deciding whether to buy the Humble Paradox Bundle or not

Well well well, what have we here? A new Humble Bundle from the good people at Paradox Interactive? Don't mind if I do, and I hope you will too. Granted you will have to be a strategy fan to appreciate this bundle as the majority of games in it are in the grand strategy genre. But, if you are curious about the genre then now is a great time to jump on. Paradox is also known for pumping its games full of DLC post-release so this is a good time to get some of its base games on the cheap then decide later if you want the DLC.

The pay-what-you-want tier has the most wide-appealing mix of games with the magic based co-op-centric game Magica 2, the hands-off real-time strategy Majesty 2, and the city-sim Cities in Motion 2.

The beat-the-average tier is where it starts to get into what Paradox is known for, grand strategies. Crusader Kings II with The Old Gods DLC, Hearts of Iron III Complete, and Europa Universalis III Complete will fill your life with all the strategy you could ever want. There's also quite a few mods around for these games, especially Crusader Kings II if that type of thing is your bag. The critically acclaimed CRPG Pillars of Eternity is also in this tier which has been on my watch list for a while, and ultimately sealed me getting the bundle.

Finally in the $12 tier is what I would consider to be the most accessible grand strategy that Paradox has ever put out. Stellaris is a science fiction grand strat that has an actual tutorial in it as opposed to every other Paradox release that just throws you into the deep end and expects you to float. It's also the only grand strat that they have released that isn't based on history so you don't feel obligated to cross over into Poland as Nazi Germany on September 1st, 1939.

News:: Charming town life sim My Time at Portia lands on Steam Early Access

Our pleasant-game radar picked up My Time at Portia last year while it was running an alpha. Today, the small-town-life RPG about restoring your Pa's workshop has made it onto Steam Early Access.

It's got the elements you've likely come to expect: growing crops, cooking, fishing, exploring dungeons, mining, building a house, interacting with the locals, that sorta stuff. I imagine some of you are still digging into Stardew Valley (especially now that it's on Switch), but this is worth keeping an eye on.

Future plans for Portia include fleshing out the world with more locations, storylines, items, buildings, mini-games, seasonal events, and the all-important ability to "keep, raise, and ride animals."

Pathea Games is expecting a nine-month run on Early Access "to incorporate feedback from the player base and evolve our vision." The game is $20 right now and it will get a price bump once it's finished. You'll be able to play on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch down the road.

News:: Pokemon Go gets another wave of Gen 3 critters

Pokemon Go is set to receive some more creatures today, according to a new post from Niantic. While the blog is incredibly light on details, we at least know there are 23 new monsters up for grabs. Polygon has confirmed around half of the list with some guesses as to the others, so that is a start. None of the creatures appear to be legendaries either, so no raid exclusive nonsense to fiddle with.

News:: Jason Rohrer's One Hour One Life asks us to live together or die alone

Jason Rohrer is probably a name you’ve seen mentioned at least once during your life as a video game fan, but whose work you may be unfamiliar with. He’s an auteur, a one-man-band of a developer who put out his first game more than a decade ago. I first became aware of the man when Alt-Play: Jason Rohrer Anthology was ported to DSiWare. Included in the pack is perhaps his most well-known game Passage, a critical darling and one of those art games some would turn a nose to for valuing a message over mechanics.

That’s how I looked at both Passage and Gravitation the first time I played them.

“Ugh,” ignorant CJ thought “I get it, you work too much and life is full of difficult choices. Get over yourself.”

It’s easy to dismiss any game with a concrete point-of-view as self-involved, especially if, like me in those years, I thought of gaming as merely a vehicle for delivering entertainment rather than something that makes me keenly aware of my own mortality. And yet, I return to both games on an annual basis. As time passes and my own life continues to be unfulfilled -- fuck me, I turn 33 this year -- the message of both games actually begins to speak to me, now doing so so loudly I see my life and my choices in every pixel on the screen.

Our lives and how we choose to live them is the central theme of Rohrer’s newest game One Hour One Life. It's set to launch later this year as a co-operative civilization building sim played at a micro level: every player starts out as a child living one year for every minute that passes, and as they grow they must decide how they will contribute to and build up a society for future generations to enjoy.

News:: This new footage of Hokuto ga Gotoku includes some Kiryu action

The more I see of Hokuto ga Gotoku, Sega's upcoming Fist of the North Star game helmed by Ryu ga Gotoku studio, the more I want it. This latest trailer (taken from a livestream) better shows off how the combat flows and even gives us a small glimpse of the Kiryu Kazuma add-on DLC that will be included with the game's premium edition in Japan. If you need any further proof that Kiryu is a bad ass, this footage should settle things.

What surprises me the most is that this engine looks like it is based on Yakuza 0 instead of 6 or Kiwami 2. While that is probably a good sign for die hard series fans who aren't too keen on the newest installments, it does seem weird to create a whole new engine and then throw it out. Whatever the case, this game looks outstanding and I'm still hoping we get confirmation of a Western release soon.

News:: Nike to produce light-emitting Sony Playstation shoes

Sony and Nike have announced new sneaks preparing to hit the market. The basketball-style shoe, known as the "PG-2," is designed around the legendary PlayStation brand.

The sneakers feature both the PlayStation logo and the Nike "Swoosh" (it's called that, right?) and have a varied deep blue and black colouring, reminiscent of multiple PlayStation console brands. The lace-locks are coloured like the symbols on the Dual-Shock controller's face-buttons.

The respective company logos, emblazoned on the tongue of each foot, light up at the press of a button, with a reported 150-hour battery life. Remember those 1988 Paula Abdul trainers that did that? Oh, wait, you weren't born for another eleven years. The shoes also come packaged with a code, which will allow purchasers to download a matching dynamic theme for their PS4.

The Nike PG-2 PlayStation Colorway will go on sale February 10, priced around $110.

News:: Xbox One gamers will get one last Dragon Ball FighterZ beta before launch

While Dragon Ball FighterZ seems to be shaping up pretty well, the previous beta period was a bit of a let down. Players on Xbox One were unable to even connect to the matchmaking servers, so they didn't get a chance to test out the online multiplayer action. In an attempt to make it up for people that missed out, Bandai Namco has announced that it will be running one final beta for all Xbox players before launch.

Starting at 9 pm EST today (January 23), you'll hopefully be able to connect to other players and trade blows from the comfort of your home. The beta will run for 24 hours, so you won't have that much time to try it out. It should be long enough to let us know how the final game shapes up, though.

Rising Star Games have announced that the deluxe edition board game of the notorious 2010 release, Deadly Premonition, is available to pre-order on Amazon, ahead of its January 31 release.

The game also features a Steam key for Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut.

News:: The 'God of War' reboot comes to the PS4 on April 20th

It's been nearly two years since Sony announced it would revitalize the God of War franchise, and now we finally know when Kratos' next adventure will arrive. To go along with the release date, Sony has also detailed some extremely lavish and expensive pre-order bundles and released a new trailer. The latter will likely be more exciting to fans, so let's start there, shall we?

News:: The first issue of Mega Man Mastermix, a colorized version of Megamix, is out this week

I have every trade paperback for Mega Man Megamix, if only because of the artwork. Hitoshi Ariga originally created this style back in 1997, and its raw staying power led to a US localization of the manga in 13 years later. Ariga has a way with the series, adding an air of familiarity to it, while completely re-imagining characters in some cases (Skull Man in particular). If you haven't read it yet, it deals with a new storyline based on the games, starting with the birth of Mega Man.

Ok so I'm rambling, but Megamix is great, and it's coming back yet again in Mastermix form. This week the first issue of Mastermix is arriving at stores, an 80-page book that adds color to Ariga's story art for the first time (only the covers were colored previously).

As the new volumes are released, it's possible that they may move to Mega Man Gigamix, a three-volume series that followed Megamix. It's a lot of mixes to keep track of but I can do my best to help!

News:: The creator of Downwell is now working at Nintendo

Well this sure is a fine way to start off the day!

Ojiro "Moppin" Fumoto, the creator of Downwell, has taken a job at Nintendo.

"I'll do my best," he said in tweet.

Downwell is a roguelike action game about strategically falling and it feels so wonderful. I hope you try playing it sometime, because I want good things for you. Downwell is very much a good thing.

Fumoto has since been collaborating with Spelunky's Derek Yu and other independent creators on UFO 50, a collection of 50 games that "are slightly smaller than commercial 8-bit titles from the '80s."

I hope he does well at Nintendo and that we get to learn what he's up to before too long.

News:: Capcom says Monster Hunter World isn't launching on Switch because it's been in development for four years

At this point, "Switch port when" is going to be a thing. While people laughed off the idea of many major multi-platform releases hitting the Wii U, we're already seeing huge players like Wolfenstein and Doom arriving on the Switch, so it's only a matter of time for a lot of publishers.

For Capcom, Monster Hunter World on the Switch right now just isn't an option. Speaking to IGN, directors Kaname Fujioka and Yuya Tokuda explain that they "don't have any plans for the Switch at the moment," mostly because of how much time it took to develop World in the first place. According to Capcom they've been working on the project for almost four years, and had to commit to specific hardware, and they decided this "before the Switch was even announced or on sale."

So there you have it. With the PC release delayed until later in the year as it is, Capcom has its hands full already. Now I still think that there's a distinct chance for the Switch to get in on the fun with the inevitable "Super Ultra X" type release, because you just know Capcom is going to iterate on World as long as they worked on it.

News:: Blizzard games were vulnerable to a remote hijacking exploit

Fans of Blizzard games might have dodged a bullet. Google security researcher Tavis Ormandy has revealed that virtually all the developer's titles (including Overwatch and World of Warcraft) were vulnerable to a DNS rebinding flaw that let sites hijack the Blizzard Update Agent for their own purposes. Intruders had to do little more than create a hostname their site was authorized to communicate with, make that resolve to the target of their choice (such as the victim's PC) and send requests to the agent. From there, they could install malicious files, use network drives or otherwise create havoc.

News:: Review: Kirby Battle Royale

When the December 2017 NPD Group data came out earlier this month, the biggest surprise wasn’t that the Switch sold 1.5 million units in the US. That was expected given its meteoric rise. No, the biggest surprise was the 3DS family, a group of handhelds everyone assumed was on the way out the door, sold a massive 700,000 units. That’s a crazy high amount this late in its life and proof there are still gamers willing to give Nintendo's near seven-year-old system a chance.

If these new 3DS owners are looking for that great first title to pick up, I would absolutely suggest getting a Kirby game. Just not this one.

News:: Nintendo airs first commercial in Taiwan in roughly a decade for the Switch

Nintendo hasn't been pushing anything hard over in Hong Kong for a while. The last time the company advertised over there was when the Wii was new, but that just recently changed according to several sources in the region.

Nintendo has produced a commercial for Super Mario Odyssey for Switch, marking the first time they've advertised in Taiwan for roughly a decade. According to user Chinese Nintendo, the ad was aired at 8PM in Taiwan during primetime.

It's a testament to Nintendo's global rollout of the Switch, in an attempt to capitalize on its popularity as quickly as possible. It's a smart move, as resting on their laurels could have let some third parties slip through their fingers -- now they have just about every western and eastern studio scrambling to make or port something onto the Switch.

News:: The Caligula Effect: Overdose getting Limited Edition PS4 consoles in Japan

Sony Japan are really pumping out the Limited Edition PS4 consoles lately, with Hokuto ga Gotoku, Monster Hunter: World, Valkyria Chronicles and other games getting their very own versions of the (typically) black box.

Now you can add The Caligula Effect: Overdose to that list, with the PS Vita remake getting not one, but TWO models to celebrate its release. The "μ Edition" is a white console featuring a lavish depiction of overseer μ laying atop a rich flowerbed, whilst the "Extreme Edition" features a repeating pattern and chibi-versions of μ and Aria. Extreme.

The two units are available for pre-order in Japan and come in 500GB and 1TB formats, costing ¥33,480 ($300) and ¥38,480 ($350) respectively. If you just cannot decide on which design you prefer, you can chuck in a top-plate of either design for an extra ¥3,000. The consoles can be purchased from the Sony Store, and prices obviously do not take into account shipping and/or customs charges.

News:: The new God of War is out on 4/20

After a lot of random screen drops and the like, we now have a clear idea of when God of War is coming out -- April 20. Yes it's still called God of War even though it's not a full reboot, we'll have to keep dealing with it.

It's also still slated for PS4 with Cory Barlog at the helm, and will be the eight and most recent entry from a chronological standpoint, thrusting Kratos and his son into the realm of Norse mythology with his Leviathan Axe. To kick off the launch date announcement Sony also dropped a new story trailer,  but it heavily touches on some spoilerery beats if you wanted to go in blind.

The whole Norse thing is looking really good, I'm just hoping they don't screw up the son/familial angle. Atreus has the potential to really bring home the whole paternal narrative that was previously explored in The Last of Us, but only if the performances and writing are there.

News:: I would play this Zelda cube concept in a second

I don't think Twitter user @ktwfc thought that their "Zelda Cube" art concept would get as much play as it did, but they basically spent the rest of the afternoon thanking people for checking it out. It's that good!

A lot of retro concept art comes across my desk, and most of it is excellent, but the idea of the "Zelda Cube" is multi-faceted. I love how Link enters the dungeon in one zone, traverses it in another, and then treks across the title screen to lay a bomb down against a hidden wall. There's a lot of perspective-based games out there like Fez and Monument Valley (and even a bit of camera trickery for some of the 2D bits in Super Mario Odyssey), so something like this could feasibly work.

Either way, even if Nintendo doesn't ever use this concept, I've watched this loop like 100 times.

News:: Danger Mouse: The Danger Games coming to Nintendo Switch

9th Impact Studios have announced that they are bringing their mobile racing title, The Danger Games to the Nintendo Switch. Previously available on Android and iOS, the app is based on British kid's TV series Danger Mouse.

I loved Danger Mouse as a youngling. Somewhere I still have a plush toy of the anthropomorphic secret agent, which was knitted for me by a dearly departed grandparent. Danger Mouse was an easily digestible, funny and cool British cartoon from the tongue-in cheek studios of Cosgrove Hall, also responsible for other 80's stalwarts Trap Door and Count Duckula.

The Danger Games is based on the 2015 relaunch of the series, and features the Greatest Secret Agent in the World competing in various track events alongside friends and enemies such as Penfold, Colonel K and the villainous Baron Greenback. There's also a new gal character, Jeopardy Mouse, who wasn't in the 80's version, and as such appears drawn in a oddly different style to everybody else.

The game sees characters running through the streets of London, collecting power-ups to waylay each other's efforts to reach the finish line. Even for a kid's game, it looks kinda bland and weirdly slow, particularly when DM gets in his famous Danger Car and appears to travel with less speed than he did on foot. Perhaps my jaded, old-man's-eyes are missing some magic that'll work on the youths.

News:: Microsoft's Xbox exclusives will come to Game Pass on launch day

To date, the Xbox Game Pass has been a tricky value proposition. While there have been a few recent hits, it frequently comes across as a clearinghouse for games whose best days are over. You'll have a better reason to subscribe going forward, though: Microsoft has promised to add all of its in-house Xbox One exclusives to Game Pass the moment they're available. Sea of Thieves will be one of the first when it launches on March 20th, and this should also include the long-delayed Crackdown 3 as well as future games in franchises like Halo and Gears of War. So long as you're paying that monthly fee, that blockbuster title won't cost you extra or require a months-long wait.

News:: The 2018 Oscar nominations are here and they're full of nominees

Well, they're here. The 2018 Oscar nominations have rolled in, and there aren't too many stunners to talk about. I'm really excited that The Shape of Water gained so much momentum over the awards season, though. Thanks to that it brought in the most nominations with 13. A monster movie fairytail has pulled in the most nominations at the Academy Awards. Maybe the times are actually changing for the Academy.

Jordan Peele must be insanely excited that his first ever directorial effort netted him a Best Director and a Best Picture nomination. Get Out is fantastic and he deserves it. Looks like Three Billboards survived the odd backlash swelling up behind the film as well.

Once again, though, it's very hard to settle on any front runners for most of the categories. Best Picture is definitely up in the air along with Best Director and both supporting actor awards. Maybe Del Toro is a slight favorite in Best Director after his Golden Globe win, but I'm not so sure about it. I think Gary Oldman will take the Best Actor with Frances McDormand easily walking away with Best Actress.

And, of course, Roger Deakins -- possibly the greatest working cinematographer and most nominated -- will once again not win despite Blade Runner 2049 totally deserving it on its own merits even if he didn't deserve it for being snubbed year after year.

Finally, if you need to listen to some amazing music today then Alexandre Desplat's score for The Shape of Water is stunningly good.

Who do you think deserves to win? What's missing. Should Logan have received a nomination for Best Picture? That is probably my biggest issue.
