Well, they're here. The 2018 Oscar nominations have rolled in, and there aren't too many stunners to talk about. I'm really excited that The Shape of Water gained so much momentum over the awards season, though. Thanks to that it brought in the most nominations with 13. A monster movie fairytail has pulled in the most nominations at the Academy Awards. Maybe the times are actually changing for the Academy.
Jordan Peele must be insanely excited that his first ever directorial effort netted him a Best Director and a Best Picture nomination. Get Out is fantastic and he deserves it. Looks like Three Billboards survived the odd backlash swelling up behind the film as well.
Once again, though, it's very hard to settle on any front runners for most of the categories. Best Picture is definitely up in the air along with Best Director and both supporting actor awards. Maybe Del Toro is a slight favorite in Best Director after his Golden Globe win, but I'm not so sure about it. I think Gary Oldman will take the Best Actor with Frances McDormand easily walking away with Best Actress.
And, of course, Roger Deakins -- possibly the greatest working cinematographer and most nominated -- will once again not win despite Blade Runner 2049 totally deserving it on its own merits even if he didn't deserve it for being snubbed year after year.
Finally, if you need to listen to some amazing music today then Alexandre Desplat's score for The Shape of Water is stunningly good.
Who do you think deserves to win? What's missing. Should Logan have received a nomination for Best Picture? That is probably my biggest issue.
