News:: Review: Jessica Jones (Season 2)

Fun fact: I watched all of the first season of Jessica Jones in a day. At the time, I was living in England and was so incredibly bored that I order some British pizza (it's just as disappointing as it sounds), camped out on a couch, and watched the entire season from 9 in the morning until midnight. I couldn't help myself. At first I watched it because I was just that bored, but after a few episodes I was hooked and the show wouldn't let me go. It had a compelling lead, a fantastic villain, and the drama was off the charts.

I knew that a second season was always going to happen with Jessica Jones, but the question then became where does the show go? The first season went into some deeply personal and uncomfortable territory for Jessica Jones, mostly due to her sociopathic ex-boyfriend Kilgrave, and with him out of the picture for the second season, it would take a lot to top their brilliant dynamic. And by gosh they sure did try.

News:: PUBG's achievements are a good start, but I want even more out-there goals

With school and travel and other games competing for our attention, it's been a while since Ray and I have sat down to play some PUBG together for fun, much less for the sake of a video. But, as you'll quickly see, the allure of emotes and newly-added Steam achievements proved too tempting to resist.

We hadn't necessarily planned to share this footage, but way too many weirdly lucky things happened as the achievement criteria pushed us to play in new and increasingly idiotic ways. First blood? Got it. Pan kill? Easy peasy. Getting into an enemy's vehicle? Somehow, some way, we both pulled it off.

I'd love to see PUBG add more ridiculous objectives for players to try and complete. At a certain point, a win is just a win, and it doesn't carry the same weight it once did. Let's spice it up.

News:: Paratopic is an enigmatic, haunting little game

Paratopic sticks with you. It's the kind of game that lingers, haunting the dark corners of your mind after its credits roll. There's something off about it in a delightful way; the atmospheric fever dream of low-poly horror imagery shows, but never tells.

It doesn't take long to complete Paratopic. It's easily finished in a single sitting, running between forty-five minutes to an hour, depending on your desire to soak up every detail of its world. At times it seems like an homage to Thirty Flights of Loving distilled through the lens of Silent Hill. Paratopic moves from one scene to another quickly, obliquely jumping around in its narrative as if to confuse and disarm, while its ominous and synthy soundtrack pushes you forward. Don't expect to understand everything you see; there's mystery at its center.

News:: Final Fantasy XV's PC port is straight up impressive

Final Fantasy XV's PC version was delayed to make it the best PC version it could be. If you've been playing games on PC for long enough, you've heard this song and dance before. Square Enix has had a good track record recently with their PC ports...and then Chrono Trigger came out on Steam. So yeah, any confidence in the company to create a solid PC port stays way up in the air where it belongs.

Enter Final Fantasy XV. Oh sorry, need to respect the branding here.

News:: Danny Boyle says he is directing the next James Bond film

If you haven't been paying attention to the rumors this might come as a bit of a surprise, but Danny Boyle has confirmed he will be co-writing and directing the next James Bond film. There have been rumors swirling about this for a while, but it's official now. The directing part I can totally see as pulling in a more auteur director worked wonders with Sam Mendes, but the writing part is quite surprising. That could bring a very interesting edge to the next Bond installment as Boyle is well known for his layered, weaving plots, that often jump back and forth in time.

He's working with John Hodge (Trainspotting), who will probably be the primary screenwriter, but considering the two have a solid history together it should turn out feeling like a Boyle film.

"We are working on a script right now," the director told Metro. "And it all depends on that really. I am working on a Richard Curtis script at the moment. We hope to start shooting that in 6 or 7 weeks. Then Bond would be right at the end of the year. But we are working on them both right now."

"We've got an idea, John Hodge, the screenwriter, and I have got this idea, and John is writing it at the moment. And it all depends on how it turns out. It would be foolish of me to give any of it away."

So no official contracts have be signed yet, but if whatever idea Boyle has pans out then it sounds like he's pretty much in. What's interesting is that Spectre left us with a bit of a cliffhanger ending with Bond walking away, so one assumed that the producers had an idea of where they wanted to go with the story, but this sounds like Boyle and Hodge had their own plans that they want to run with. Maybe those will fit into the overall story from the previous films or maybe we're just going back to the days of Bond films only loosely connecting. Either way Boyle should bring something very interesting to the franchise, and allow him to tackle a true blockbuster.

News:: Fate/Grand Order saves America in its latest episode

Fate/Grand Order continues to trundle along, feeding the cash of whales and the salty tears of unlucky would-be Masters slaving away in the gacha mines. That said, now it does have something for people who want more to do than farm evil hands and doors to improve their Servants. That something - which is live now - is the next chapter of the game's main story, and this time we're headed to the good ol' U.S. of A.

The fifth chapter of the story, formally titled Fifth Singularity: North American Myth War ~ E Pluribus Unum, sends players to 1783, which in real life wouldn't be too long after the United States was officially recognized via the Treaty of Paris, but in Fate/Grand Order's screwed-up timeline means that the Union's been split between its Eastern and Western halves and made to fight in a bitter civil war augmented by magic robo-soldiers and mythic creatures.

The story will feature a number of All-American Servants...like British nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale (for some reason a Berserker-class?), Russian occultist Helena Blavatsky, Indian demigods Rama, Karna and Arjuna, the fourth version of Fate alumnus Cu Chulhainn (his long-awaited Berserker edition), and Queen Medb, a Celtic goddess who can best be described as "History's Strongest Thot".

There are, of course, some actual American Servants in there somewhere. A Caster version of Native American hero Geronimo will be given free to people who finish the story, and players can roll for Billy the Kid, a gunslinging Archer with an emphasis on critical hits. Story completion will also add none other than Thomas Edison to the summoning pool. Folks expecting an old white guy with a lightbulb fetish, though, should be warned: FGO's Edison appears to have had his powers enhanced by the American presidency itself to become a sort of avatar of American exceptionalism. Maybe this explains why in-game Edison looks like All Might's fursona.

Check out a short trailer for all this nonsense below.

News:: Two major eSports players associations are in the works

There are two players associations being put together for professional competitors who play Overwatch and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Sports Business Journal reports. The latter will include players in the ESL Pro League and the FACEIT ECS league and is being helmed by eSports broadcaster Scott "SirScoots" Smith and attorney Michael Doi. Smith told Sports Business Journal that the Counter-Strike Professional Players Association (CSPPA) won't be seeking to become a US union since Counter-Strike players span the globe but it is looking to sign the over 225 players that participate professionally. "Every day I sign another guy," he said. "I would say 70 or so have signed an official membership document that they are for the players association, are behind the players association, they want to be in the players association."

News:: These tiny Nintendo Switch cases are adorable

My current shelf situation is a complete disaster at the moment. I've hit the point in my game collection where I simply no longer have the room for newer games and I'm now stacking cases on top of one another and have moved almost the entirety of my retro collection into storage.

Since getting my Nintendo Switch back in November, I've had to make due by simply putting my Switch cases on top of my PS4 cases, truly, these are difficult times. But, it would appear Kotaku reader Mahir has come up with a potential solution for all our shelf disaster scenarios in the form of these adorable miniature Switch cases that simply fit the cartridge itself.

News:: Remote explosives and bad llamas are coming to Fortnite

Epic Games has been handling Fortnite's Battle Royale component very well over the past few months. They're quick to fix things from game-breaking issues to small balance adjustments, and are steadily adding more cosmetic content and meaningful updates to the game.

That includes V3.3, which focuses on remote explosives (a classic shooter equipment piece), as well as the treasure chest-esque supply llamas (which are loot boxes in the nearly forgotten horde component of Fortnite). The former are going to be rare items located in supply drops, llamas, treasure chests, or in the floor, stack in groups of four, and have a maximum item limit of 10.

Other small changes include the No Scope Hunting Rifle changing to Hunting Rifle, and a new limited time mode on March 19 -- Blitz -- which features "much shorter" storm times (read: players will have to avoid a giant ring of death around the map quicker). All loot delivery systems are also boosted in Blitz, making it a super-charged, likely even quicker to complete mode than normal round-to-round gameplay.

News:: Aero Fighters 3 jets into battle on PS4, Xbox One and Switch

The ACA Neo Geo range, brought to us by the good people at Hamster, continues this week with the release of '90s shmup sequel, Aero Fighters 3.

Originally blasting into arcades in 1995, Aero Fighters 3 was developed by Video System for SNK's MVS/Neo Geo hardware. One or two players choose from a selection of ten fighters to blast through 18 rapid-fire stages.

A unique branching system selects the next stage based on which parts of the previous boss were destroyed first. As always, there are a huge array of power-ups and weapons to pick up in the heat of battle. Not only that, picking two fighters from the same country unlocks a cool super move.

Aero Fighters 3 launches today on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The Hamster site is also showing the game as available on PS4, but it only appears listed for the Japanese territory.

News:: Arkane uses gross red eyes to tease Prey DLC

It's Prey Day, and you shouldn't feel bad if you weren't aware. That's because it's seemingly the first ever Prey Day, as it's an occasion that Bethesda now celebrates because March 15, 2032 is when Morgan Yu woke up at the very beginning of Prey. (For what it's worth, Prey released on May 5 last year.) Bethesda's using the faux-holiday to tease what seems to be an upcoming add-on.

The Arkane Twitter account posted this picture today, which shows the studio's staff with gross red Prey eyes:

News:: Time-loop adventure game Minit launches April 3

It's not lost on me that this trailer for Minit, a game about adventuring 60 seconds at a time, is precisely one minute long. That's the attention to detail I crave in clever, focused, well-executed indie games.

This Devolver Digital-published collaboration between Kitty Calis, Jan Willem Nijman, Jukio Kallio, and Dominik Johann is described as a big adventure "compressed into a tiny amount of time."

If you like the time-loop concept, jot dot April 3 -- that's when Minit hits PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

News:: Long-awaited Runner3 finally has a release date

Let's run through all of the Bit Trip games since 2009 real quick -- Beat, Core, Void, Runner, Fate, Flux, Runner2, and Runner3. See a pattern here? Outside of two additional compilations the Runner series is the clear breadwinner, and after an announcement in early 2017, we're nearly ready to receive Runner3.

I was just talking to a few people over the weekend about how so many folks forgot about this one, but come May you'll be able to run all over again on PC and Switch. A physical copy is also on the way, with a PVC character strap, audio CD sampler, and an instruction booklet.

According to Choice Provisions it's a timed console exclusive on Switch, and will make it to other platforms eventually. It feels right at home on a Nintendo system though, especially given the runner/mobile nature and the Switch's ability to go portable.

News:: Shape of the World seems like a relaxing way to literally give shape to the world

Aggressive terraformation mechanics never get old. "Ooohhh, I summoned the earth to appear simply by walking near it!" That sort of god complex always has some novelty to it.

Shape of the World capitalizes on that in the most low-key way possible. It's a game that's billed as "relaxing exploration." It looks like a lot of wandering, and then interacting with the wildlife that you've materialized. The artistic aesthetic seems like it'll push people toward seeing more.

Developer Hollow Tree has already proven that there's something of a market for this game. Shape of the World was Kickstarted in 2015 for approximately $60,000. Now it's almost ready to debut on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and, as was just announced today, Switch. It releases sometime this spring. That's when you can create a whole new world.

News:: There's going to be a Narcos game next year

I was late to the party for Narcos, but it's probably my favorite Netflix show to date -- it put such a damper on my sleep schedule. The mostly-Columbia-set crime drama captures real-world events surrounding the rise of Pablo Escobar, the Cali Cartel, and, with the upcoming fourth season, the Guadalajara Cartel. If you like actor Pedro Pascal (and you should), Narcos is highly recommended.

The show is currently being adapted into a video game, which isn't something I thought I'd ever get to write. The project is now underway at UK-based publisher Curve Digital's sister company, Kuju.

I'd expect this to be a story-driven, moral-dilemma-filled adventure title given the source material, but today's announcement doesn't offer concrete details. The game will be out for "all major formats" in spring 2019, and it's said to weave in "storylines and characters" from the past three seasons.

"We're looking forward to creating a game that matches the fantastic storyline and gritty action of the Netflix series," said Kuju head Brynley Gibson. "We're tremendously excited and have some amazing gameplay elements in the works that will please both fans of the show and gamers."

*Pablo will remember that.*

News:: Nintendo tweets out Mario Odyssey hint art, intrigues us with more secrets

Nintendo does a really good job at getting their community fired up every now and then, either through offbeat types of viral marketing, or by way of in-game festivities. This stunt is like a combination of both, as the publisher tweeted out another scavenger hunt-esque picture for Super Mario Odyssey fans to pour over.

While these hints usually lead to Power Moons you may have already collected, this one allows players to discover a little 8-bit Luigi that doles out coins -- just head below the little floating pyramid in Sand Kingdom and ground pound the floor. What's amazing to me isn't that there's so many secrets hidden in Odyssey, it's what Nintendo could do with its giant sandboxes in the future.

All they have to do is add in a quick and breezy update and bam, you have more secrets to find that didn't exist before. Odyssey has been a pleasant surprise given its longevity, and the recent Luigi's Balloon World update really helped inject more life into it.

News:: The Crew 2 finally zoom zooms in late June

The open-world racer market has been quietly busy as of late. Notable examples are: the bi-annual Forza Horizon game, the recent remaster of Burnout Paradise, and whatever Need for Speed is up to. Ubisoft's The Crew has always been sneaky good, and it hopes to prove that a second time in just a few months.

After being pushed back from March 2018 to "the first half of Ubisoft's fiscal year," The Crew 2 finally has a firm release date. It gets the green light on June 29. That's when the Americana cross-country trek kicks off.

And, honestly, that seems like a good date! This spring is so stupidly full of big games, and the end of the year is traditionally always packed. But that summer sweet spot? That's the right time to chill out with a quality racer.

News:: Check out half an hour of footage from Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection

PlayStation Underground have released a video featuring the first in-game look at Capcom's upcoming compendium Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, which contains a selection of stone-cold classics. And Street Fighter.

The collection features most variants of Street Fighters one, two and three, as well as the three Alpha/Zero titles. This makes for what has to be one of the single greatest fighting game releases of all-time. What's more, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Alpha 3 and SFIII: Third Strike will also have online play, marking the first time such an option has been available to PC players (well... in an official sense...)

Also included is a cool museum of artwork and other marketing materials for the various games. I am concerned, however, that the video doesn't display any sort of Training Mode. Hopefully that just isn't implemented into the featured build.

This release is unlikely to replace using arcade technology in tournaments -- the ST and 3S players live and die by using arcade hardware, rightly so -- but for everyone else, myself included, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection is set to be a fantastic trip down memory lane, or an introduction to games that many might not even have played. It looks to be a very exciting release.

News:: Every console is getting a Dark Souls Remastered test, not just Switch

Last week Nintendo told us by way of a Direct presentation that Dark Souls would be getting a network test on Switch, which begged the question -- is it coming elsewhere?

Well, after what seems like a token few days of announcement exclusivity Bandai Namco spilled the beans, explaining over Twitter that PS4, Xbox One, and Switch would all get their own network tests. Right now the dates and details are unknown, but will be doled out "as soon as possible." As a reminder the game will run at 4K60FPS on enhanced consoles and 1080p30 on Switch in TV mode. It's also coming to PC.

I don't think I need a network test for this -- I'll just be there day one. I've lost count of my playthroughs at this point!

News:: Tanky support Brigitte joins Overwatch on March 20

After a couple short weeks of testing, Blizzard is ready to let Brigitte loose in Overwatch. The 27th hero -- a support with a long-range flail and an energy shield -- will join the live game on Tuesday, March 20.

Brigitte can also toss health- and armor-granting repair packs, dash into enemies to stun them, and heal teammates over time when she smacks foes around with her flail. I've seen some cool combo videos out there but, much like Doomfist, I feel like my execution just won't be reliable enough.

If you've had a chance to play as Brigitte on the PTR, how's she shaping up?

News:: Splatoon 2 details X Rank and 3.0 update changes

Via the game's Tumblr account, Nintendo have revealed some details on the upcoming overhaul of arena-shooter Splatoon 2. These include details on the all new X Rank and other notes on the game's 3.0 update, all of which should come into play late-April.

X Rank will become the new top-tier for online play. All players who are currently S+10 and above will be re-registered as X Rank once version 3.0 goes live, To put that in perspective, as of February, only 1% of all Splatoon 2 players fit into that category, so it's going to be a pretty exclusive club.

X Rank players will have a new target, as the standard Rank meter will be replaced by the awesome-sounding X-Power meter. Players with the highest X-Power at the end of the month will be proudly announced on SplatNet 2, then the meters will be reset for the following month.

In other 3.0 news, there is the possibility that the weekly weapons will be dropped in favour of multiple weaponry arriving in batches monthly. No reason has been given for this, nor a date for when the new delivery method will roll out. Stage rotation is also being tweaked in Ranked mode. Rather than having 20 stages rotate across four types of battle, now only 8 stages will rotate, with the selection being replaced by another 8 from the pool each month. This is done as the team believe it was taking to long for stages and modes to get back to the "front of the queue", so to speak.

It's an exciting time to be a Splatoon 2 player. Adding to all these tweaks is the Octo Expansion DLC, bringing with it lots of new content. Hopefully this will all keep the ink wars alive and well for the rest of 2018 and beyond.

News:: Here's one last look at the kraken in Sea of Thieves before launch

We want what we can't have and boy do I want to fight the kraken in Sea of Thieves. Rare has been teasing the monster for some time now, offering quick peeks here and there in promotional videos. Today marks our best (official) look at the beast yet, which is fitting: it's launch-trailer day.

Aside from the kraken, the video also has a dash of player and ship customization.

Just as a quick housekeeping note, I'll be reviewing Sea of Thieves for Destructoid, but given the online nature of the game, don't expect to see reviews go up ahead of launch on March 20. I'm planning to start playing right when the floodgates open and I intend to get a review-in-progress up as soon as I have a confident feel for the game's sense of progression and mechanics not seen in the beta.

News:: Gal Gunvolt Burst is getting a surprise release today on PS4

Inti Creates is getting a little confusing here with its nomenclature, but hey, it's another Gunvolt game.

In a surprise reveal the developer is dropping Gal Gunvolt Burst on us, a retooled but essentially the same version of Mighty Gunvolt Burst. It's $10, and if you so choose you can grab a handful of DLC characters for $5. The "Gal" comes from Ekoro, who represents the Gal Gun series.

In the original Mighty Gunvolt on 3DS, players started off with Ekoro, Beck, and Gunvolt. That was changed for the sequel as only the latter two were playable in Mighty, and that was reverted back to the original by adding Ekoro as a default option rather than DLC.

Yeah I told you it's confusing!

News:: Review: Warhammer: Vermintide 2

Warhammer: Vermintide 2 can be a brutally unforgiving game. Just as you think you've gotten the edge over a brutal Bile Troll, the game's AI will spawn in a group of Gas Rats to knock you down a peg.

On many occasions, I've watched my allies -- be they personal friends or strangers from the quickplay queue -- become overrun by the hordes of Skaven and Rotbloods only for one of us to hang around, survive by the skin of our teeth, and save the party just in time.

Every moment I spend walking through Vermintide's ruined cities or bubbly marches is incredibly tense and I can't get enough of it. Vermintide 2 feels like its predecessor refined, both in terms of visual style and gameplay.

News:: ARK: Survival Evolved is getting a free-to-play mobile version

The very large MMO about giant dinosaurs is coming to the platform that's physically the smallest. ARK: Survival Evolved is getting a mobile adaption.

Developer Studio Wildcard just announced that ARK will be released on both iOS and Android. The mobile version is being developed by War Drum Studios, which most recently created the mobile port of Bully. This take on ARK will be free-to-play, but a press release states that it'll have the "full online survival experience" that's found on PC and console. That might be tough to gauge right now, but it's worth noting that there will be both single- and multiplayer functionality.

As for when this is happening, well, it's kind of right now. There's a limited iOS beta that you can sign up for. Otherwise, there's a full launch for both iOS and Android planned for later this spring. ARK has been popular enough that approximately 13 million people have bought some version of it. It stands to reason that plenty more will be interested in trying it for free.

News:: Rapper Drake playing Fortnite breaks Twitch's concurrent viewers in a single stream record

A new record was set on streaming site Twitch last night, as popular Fortnite streamer Ninja was joined by Canadian rap artist Drake for some Battle Royale action, bringing over half a million pairs of eyes on the ensuing mayhem.

Drake and Ninja hooked up for the session after the former started following the latter on Twitter. The session was popular enough once the bullets started flying, but after Drake tweeted a link out to his fans, hundreds of thousands of them logged in to watch the superstar in action.

It seems things just blew up from there, as another rapper, Travis Scott, and then Pittsburgh Steelers own JuJu-Smith Schuster, joined in the fight to make it an all-star rumble. Even Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom turned up in chat. Quite the party.

When all was said and done, 607,000 concurrent viewers tuned in, which is a new record for a single user's stream (so not including major eSports events) You can check out the fun 'n' games yourself over at Ninja's video archive.
