News::Dark Souls II: The Crown of the Sunken King | Game Informer

Dark Souls II begins its major downloadable offerings with The Crown of the Sunken King, the first installment in a trilogy of DLC for From Softwares action/RPG. It provides 4-6 hours of additional content deep below the Black Gulch, giving players three new areas to explore. These new surroundings make particularly good use of vertical space, twisting environments, and deadly traps. Travel is exceptionally dangerous, since walls meshing together can throw off even expert players, leaving their exact location hard to pinpoint.

News::I'm afraid not enough people will play Hohokum

Hohokum isn't an easily described game. It's one of those cases where it's not until you try it for yourself that you fully grasp the appeal, which can be a tough sell. Yeah, the whimsical art direction is terrific, but the way the game feels is pretty great, too! The people who are into it seem to really dig it, but I worry there's just not enough awareness.

With a Cross-Buy launch on PS3, PS4, and PS Vita, hopefully it'll find its place with those latter two systems especially, which are in need of more games and more non-ports, respectively.

As you may have heard, Hohokum is a part of this year's PlayStation Store PLAY program, which means PlayStation Plus members can save 20 percent by pre-ordering the game, but there's more: pre-orders also include a static PS3 theme and an exclusive Hohokum DLC pack for Sound Shapes. Anyway, it's out on August 12. Hope you play it and dig.

News::EA improves revenue in first quarter of 2014, delays Dragon Age and Battlefield

As Electronic Arts' first fiscal quarter came to a close on June 30, the publisher found that it had beaten expectations for profits and revenue. EA credits much of this success to the runaway success of Titanfall .

CEO Andrew Wilson said that it was a strong start to the year for EA and that they were committed to putting the players first and delivering the entertainment, innovation, and creativity that players want.

This news comes after the publisher giant revealed that it delayed two of its key releases: Dragon Age: Inquisition and Battlefield Hardline , but reaffirmed its goal of $4.1 billion in net revenue and earnings per share of $1.85. Dragon Age: Inquisition has been moved back a month to November 18, and Battlefield Hardline has been moved to early 2015.

EA is hoping for BioWare's Dragon Age to be a hot seller this holiday. Mark Darrah, Executive Producer of Inquisition stated that the extra few weeks will give time to put more polish on the game and that Dragon Age would be all the better for it.

For the most part, I'm over endless runners, but I'll always have Canabalt. It hit at the right time and holds up well. Matter of fact, it's gotten even better with age: there's a free new update for the iOS version, out now, that adds multiplayer, eight game modes, and bug fixes.

For an added challenge, you can control both characters in multiplayer by yourself.

Should you not already own the game, it's on sale for $0.99 through Sunday.

News::Holy Batman 1989 videogame figure, NECA!

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of both the 1989 film and videogame, NECA has announced its first ever Batman figure in 7" scale.

This figure has over 25 points of articulation plus removable cape, Batarang, and Spear Gun accessories. The figure is painted in a way to replicate the game's original cel-shaded look. It's packaged in a special window box with opening flap to recreate the feel of the 1989 videogame packaging, and that's absolutely awesome. That's the reason I ended up buying the RoboCop figure, actually.

Batman will be available in October, but don't dawdle because according to the NECA website this will be a one-run only figure. And you don't want to miss out on it, like I missed out on the Friday the 13th variant for San Diego Comic-Con.

News::The Swapper Video Review What is a Human Soul? - PSLS

"Remember Portal? That small, innocent little puzzle game that was an offshoot of the Half-Life series? That game that became a phenomenon, spawned the cake is a lie movement, and is perhaps revered as one of the best puzzle games of all time? Many games since have tried to match up to what Portal accomplished, but few have come close. For Portal, it wasnt just about the fantastic and ingenious puzzles. It was about the atmosphere, the message in the game, the sinister overarching force, and the psychological why behind it all. Portal embodied so much beyond just how to get to your end goal, and The Swapper follows suit with its dark and twisted way of intertwining devious puzzles with an unspoken narrative." - PSLS

News::My Slight Concerns About Destiny

One of the writers from IM PLAYIN talks about some of his slight concerns over Destiny, before playing the Beta on the Xbox One "My biggest worry about this game is whether its just going to be a Halo clone. I wouldnt say Halo ripoff, just because Bungie are making it and they are Halo all over. Im probably one of the few Xbox 360 and One owners that isnt overly fussed by the Halo series. I played Halo 3 and thought it was alright ODST wasnt too bad, I guess. But I just never really got into it. Its probably because Im a history geek, so I like my action FPS games to be historically accurate (ish), well, at least historically based. The look of the game is very Halo, even the front cover looks like its featuring a cloaked Master Chief from the Halo 5 teaser video. To me, Destiny looks like the lovechild of Halo and Mass Effect, with a bit of Borderlands thrown in there for good measure. In theory, that should be one hell of a game. I just worry that we might have see...

News::The Swapper Review | GodisaGeek

Mikhail Madnani: " I havent been able to stop thinking about the puzzles and story since I completed The Swapper. For a game so cryptic, Im surprised at how much it impacted me. The ending in particular will stay with you for a long time. The Vitas small screen did wonders for the immersion, despite the beauty of The Swappers unique art style. My advice is turning the lights off, grabbing a good pair of noise-removing headphones, and getting completely and utterly enveloped in The Swapper. It is the triumvirate of visual, aural, and mental bliss."

News::Review: Sokobond

Chemistry is governed by a definite set of rules. Opposite charges attract, like dissolves like, matter is always conserved. There are more rules than just those, but one of the great things about the study of matter and its interactions is that if one truly understands the rules and laws governing chemicals, he can predict outcomes given a set of preconditions.

In that sense, Sokobond has even more in common with chemistry than it lets on. Though it boasts that no chemistry knowledge is required to play, it too runs on a specific set of rules, and any player who internalizes those rules can find success in-game. As a fortunate side effect, any who spend time connecting atoms in Sokobond might just learn something about chemistry too.

News::Disappearing Act: Xbox Sales Plummet While Microsoft's Other Devices Continue To Struggle

As Erik Kain reported here last week, the U.S. retail numbers for Xbox One dont look that awful. The PS4 beat it handily at retail in June, by 36%, but with nearly 197,000 units sold, Xbox One seems to have benefited from its recent price cut. That said, Microsoft cant hide the fact that sales have been so tepid in 2014, its been working through channel inventory and manufacturing barely any new consoles. Consider these stats: In the prior quarter, Microsoft reported 2 million console sales of which 1.2 million were the Xbox One. That means the company was moving about 800,000 Xbox 360s just three months ago. If we assume that the 360 is selling similarly at this point, then this quarters 1.1 million consoles likely consisted of just 300,000 Xbox Ones. To get a sense of how terrible that is, its as bad as Nintendos Wii U results for the quarter that ended in

News::The Walking Dead: Season Two Episode Four - Amid the Ruins Review | GodisaGeek

Robin Parker: "Amid the Ruins has its fair share of shortcomings, but it also ticks most of the boxes of what we have been asking for in the past. It maintains a good pace throughout, and avoids getting bogged down with trivialities. It also manages to provide a mix of action sections, emotional scenes, and conversational passages yet we also get some much-appreciated character development. In the first season of The Walking Dead, you really had to worry about each and every choice, whereas here there seems to be a tragic inevitability about everything. Its hard to say whether that is actually an issue, or a reflection of the harsh world Clementine finds herself in. Maybe by making it seem like everything will go wrong, despite your best efforts, Telltale are trying to show just how hopeless the situation has become. This might be a stretch of the imagination, but if it is intended to make us feel numb to the horrors of the world, then they have played a master stroke. Time wi...

News::Where to Buy Great Video Game Artwork

Where to Buy Great Video Game Artwork

I have a rule for my house: no more than a third of the artwork on my walls is allowed to be gaming-related. This rule fell apart pretty quickly when it became clear just how much beautiful video game artwork there is out there. Once, all you could really get was posters designed for the walls of kids' bedrooms; now there is a huge array of video game art that grown adults can frame and hang up without embarrassment (although I do still have a few framed posters around the place. Don't tell anyone). I now have a constant rotation of game art going on. If I didn't, my walls would be adorned by nothing else.
