News:: Black Manta looks like a righteous addition to Injustice 2

Maybe it's his costume, maybe it's his awesome laser eyes or maybe it's because his origin story is incredibly sad, but I've always liked Black Manta even if I'm not the biggest fan of Aquaman. The first Injustice was severely lacking on heroes and villains from the big blue, so when it was confirmed fishboy's arch nemesis would be part of Injustice 2, I really started to pay attention.

Earlier tonight, we got our first look at his move set and I can tell he'll be part of my regular rotation once I actually buy the game.

News:: Developers put game on Pirate Bay to help cash-strapped players

Game studios normally bend over backwards to discourage pirates and keep titles off of any piracy sites, but don't tell that to Acid Wizard. When the studio saw that a young player asked for a refund for its horror game Darkwood out of a fear that his parents wouldn't like the cost of the game, it decided to offer a safe, unprotected copy of the game on The Pirate Bay. It wants to offer you a chance to play Darkwood if money's simply too tight. There are only two requests: think about buying the game when you can, and don't buy it through key resellers like G2A.

News:: Sega hosting survey in order to gauge interest about Yakuza: Kiwami 2, Fist of the North Star

Were you excited by the announcement of Yakuza: Kiwami 2 and that sick-looking Fist of the North Star game on August 26? Do you know someone who was interested in them? Are you looking for a way to express interest to Sega that you would throw money at them for those games besides screaming on social media and buying a dozen copies of Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza 6?

Well luckily for you, Sega has the answer in the form of a four-question survey.

News:: Anonymous sources respond to Sakamoto's proclamation that Rhythm Heaven isn't dead

Ozzy Osbourne, founding member of Black Sabbath and star of the reality TV show The Osbournes, announced his retirement from the stage at least twice over the past of 20 years, but he went back on those promises both times.

In a 1982 interview, Grace Kelly, academy award winner turned Princess of Monaco, would not commit to a permanent end to her acting career, though it had been 26 years since her last role in a Hollywood picture. "I have always tried to avoid saying never or always..." she said, wisely avoiding an unanswerable question. Sadly, she died from complications of a stroke and a car accident a few months later, so we'll never know what her true intentions may have been.

These are just a few of examples of how you can never be sure what an entertainer will do next in their careers, regardless of what they say. People change their minds. Accidents happen. No one has a crystal ball. All we can do is make our best guesses.

That's why I called this post from last week an opinion. It is not a rumor. It's an educated, informed perspective from a few trusted sources who see the Rhythm Heaven series as quietly retired. Rhythm Heaven series producer Yoshio Sakamoto recently countered those opinions, stating that as far as he's concerned, the series is not dead.

I went back to a couple of the sources from the original post to ask them what they made of Sakamoto's response. Here is what they said.

News:: 'PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' knocks 'Dota 2' off its Steam throne

It's no secret that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is selling well even in its Early Access form, but it just crossed an important (if symbolic) milestone. On the morning of August 27th, the battle royale shooter overtook Dota 2 as the game with the most simultaneous players on Steam, with 877,844 fighting at once -- yes, it was more popular than the blockbuster title from the company that created Steam. It was a short-lived victory (PUBG is down to 'just' 450,000 as of this writing), but it's no mean feat when PlayerUnknown and crew were happy to have broken 500,000 just a few weeks earlier.

News:: Shinji Mikami would like to see God Hand on Steam

The past few years have seen a rise in PC gaming and digital distribution in Japan, partially due to the success of Dark Souls, as PC Gamer reported a few months ago. Seeing how well the Souls franchise performed on PC, along with visual novels and smaller Japanese games, has inspired bigger studios like Square Enix to embrace Steam and other digital distribution platforms.

Shinji Mikami is embracing it too. Citing not only PC sales in the west but also increasing interest in PC gaming in Japan, Mikami says he welcomes "the new world of Steam and digital sales." Part of his reasoning? Japanese houses are small.

News:: Fire Emblem Warriors on Switch has the option to drop the resolution for a higher frame rate

In this month's issue of the Japanese magazine Nintendo Dream, more details were discussed about the upcoming Fire Emblem Warriors. One of which was a very important detail in regards to the Casual and Classic modes. The other one, however, is a brand new detail, and easily the best feature in the game to date: the choice to decrease the resolution in order to have a higher frame rate.

News:: Oxygen Not Included update slathers you in germs

Klei's new misery colony simulator Oxygen Not Included just got a significant update, expanding on agriculture and adding in a brand-new germ mechanic. This naturally means more stress-vomiting for the duplicants you try to manage, because I've spent enough time in this game to already know that diseases are going to spread like a wildfire.

News:: Breath of the Wild's Prince Sidon deserves his own game

Are you tired of hearing about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? Well too fucking bad because I ain’t ready to stop talking about it. It’s easily one of my top 50 games of the year and even though I’ve completed the campaign, I keep coming back to finish up shrines, find Korok seeds and generally experience this wondrous rendition of Hyrule. Back when I played World of Warcraft, I didn’t care much for the questing and raids. I was far more interested in seeking out the many landmarks Azeroth was hiding.

One of my favorite places to visit repeated in Breath is the Zora's Domain. Even with its Tourette’s-like frame rate, I am infatuated with the place and one of its residents in particular. That’s right, I’m talking about the fine-ass fishman known as Prince Sidon. The star of my never-to-be-published fan fiction called “Sidon into my DMs,” the red wonder was briefly the most talked about aspect of the entire game as he was the first noteworthy character people met on their quest to save Hyrule. He’s charming, funny, energetic and quite handsome for a centenarian. He has arguably the most exciting of the Divine Beast action sequences and watching him swim across that water as he and Link tried the tame the beast convinced me quite quickly that this badass should have his own game.

The Zelda series is packed full of people who are ripe for their own adventure. Linebeck, Impa, Ganondorf, Skull Kid, Groose; they could all star and be fantastic in their own stand-alone adventure. But I just go back to that action sequence, and the fact that most people hate water levels, and I think what a wonderful experience it would be if Nintendo were to take this magnificent specimen and make him the star of his own deep sea adventure. Being a fishman would eliminate many of the issues people have with water stages (i.e. they’re slow) in the same way Starfy was able to create an entire game consisting of mostly water levels and be amazing. Side-note: Nintendo and TOSE need to make a new Starfy.

Beyond all that, he’s just so fucking positive and I can’t remember the last time a character absolutely radiated sunshine with every move he made and every word he said. So yeah, if there is a character most deserving of his own adventure, it’s Prince Sidon. Not a single person mentioned below can compare.

News:: Buy Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle at Best Buy and get a free goofy hat

In just a couple of days, you'll be able to get your hands on a Mario + Rabbids game that plays like XCOM , which is something I never thought I'd see but am fully glad now exists. If you're wondering which location you should purchase it from, maybe I can interest you in a hat?

Best Buy is offering a free hat when you purchase the game for Nintendo Switch, but there's a bit of a catch! You also have to buy any Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle figurine or another select Switch game, and then you get the hat too. It looks like your standard Mario cap but with the added bonus of Rabbid ears to make it just silly enough.

News:: For its 25th anniversary, tell us your favorite Mario Kart memory

Boy, there have been a lot of anniversaries lately that have been making me feel old. A few days ago it was GoldenEye’s 20th anniversary that reminded me of the fun times I had playing four-player deathmatch with people I no longer speak with and today it’s the anniversary of the original release of Super Mario Kart.

Hitting store shelves in Japan 25 years ago, and just a few days later here in the States, Super Mario Kart was a monumental release and remains one of the most important games in the history of the medium. Utilizing Mode 7, it created its own genre and then continued to dominate it for the next quarter century (although I’ve heard some argue Crash Team Racing out does it). I’ll admit I have difficulty playing the original after the series went fully 3D, but I fondly remember those rainy Washington weekends with my older brother and I locked in a war for the ages in the game’s battle mode. Him as Donkey Kong, me as Toad. He usually won.

Great times, but my favorite memory with the series happened a decade later. Until the release of Mario Kart 8, my favorite game in the series was Mario Kart: Double Dash. It came out my freshman year of college and I remember skipping classes to pick it up at the Eureka GameStop. Taking it back to my dorm room, I popped it in my GameCube and spent the next six hours staring at my 25” CRT television. It was nice to have a party game that wasn’t Super Smash Bros. Melee and for the rest of the semester I would race with and against the other students in my dorm.

Unlike every other game in the franchise, I couldn’t 100% this one alone. The Mirror Mode of Double Dash was too great a challenge for me alone. It was only with my friend Jon, a guy who lived down the hall, had a distinct smell and taught himself to play the keyboard, that I was able to get those gold trophies. It took us several attempts, restarting every time we failed to finish first. I controlled the kart as Daisy, he took care of the weapons as Luigi. It was one of the most intense gaming sessions I’d ever had, and the taste of victory was like that of a freshly tapped maple tree.

I had a lot of shitty moments my freshman year. I was kicked out of all my classes after a paperwork snafu, I was originally roomed with a bunch of smokers who dropped out before finishing, my main roommate for the year constantly fought with his girlfriend who also stayed over every single night and I met my best friend who would one day steal money from my family and I. This little victory, in this little video game, is the one pure memory I have of that year, and I will cherish it until I die of a heart attack on the toilet with a delicious slice of Little Caesar’s Extra Most Bestest Pizza in my hand. Which, at the rate I’m going, will happen next Thursday.

Oh, and Baby Park is still the best.

News:: Fortune teller Menat coming to Street Fighter V August 29

Continuing on a string of brand new characters for the Season 2 of Street Fighter V DLC, the fortune teller seen in Ed's story, Menat, is joining the roster August 29. There were rumors of her possible inclusion floating around, and I was hoping this would be the case given I very much like her design. Especially so after the Abigail situation.

Her Rose-adjace crystal ball is a projectile that can be called back and used for some frustrating looking mix-ups. She reminds me a bit of Tekken's Lucky Chloe (complete with a cat pose) mixed with Soul Calibur's Viola, actually.

News:: Ben Heck’s N64 Portable mod

After many comments, requests, questions, setbacks and badgering from our impassioned fans, the Nintendo 64 Portable is finally finished. Ben took the device to the Midwest Gaming Classic for help with the hardware. Thanks to our community of followers, the problematic RAM add-on was soldered flat and is now in place. In addition, the case had to be completely redesigned (which is but a small price to pay). Ben makes swift use of his CNC router to create a suitable heatsink for the N64. What do you think of the finished product? Let the team know over on the element14 Community.
