News:: Live Show: The GTFOMLG Show - Episode 3.0

The GTFOMLG Show has only been going on for a week, but it's already been a blast and is picking up momentum with each show. So far, we've played Panic Restaurant, Castlevania Bloodlines, and Batman: The Video Game, talked about all things nostalgic, and watched about a billion old video game commercials.

Tonight, that trend continues with Final Lap Twin, a fairly unknown TG-16 racing title that I can't wait to remind the world of. My love for this game isn't due to the racing itself, which is fairly basic and archaic, but due to its quest mode (think Dragon Quest, with racing... yes, really).

We'll be jumping in and doing our best to make dad proud (you'll get the reference soon enough) at 7pm PST over on Dtoid.TV. After a few hours of Car-PGing, we'll end the show with one of my favorite pinball games of all time, Devil's Crush. Be sure to put on your nostalgia goggles and tune in! As well, don't forget to vote for the games that we'll be playing on the show next week, right here. See you there!

News:: $30 gold vape DLC for a $1 fidget spinner game

As someone who lives the extreme digital lifestyle, playing Fidget Spinner Simulator is just a way of life for me. Best yet, it's also affordable at only $1 on Steam -- or at least it was. What's not cool is when the developer decides to take advantage of my lifestyle by charging $30 for the new premium membership.

News:: Review: Infinite Minigolf

A video game about miniature golf is sort of strange, if you think about it. Minigolf is already an imitation of full-scale golf, reduced to putting and avoiding obstacles. Making a video game based on minigolf just adds another layer of abstraction to the sport.

Zen Studios made their name with Zen Pinball, a comprehensive pinball simulator you can play on pretty much every platform out there. The tables available tend to be mostly realistic with just a few fantastic elements to spice things up and remind you you're playing a video game. That's also a fairly good description of their most recent project, Infinite MinigolfThe studio branched out in 2010 with Planet Minigolf on the PS3, and Infinite Minigolf is a successor of sorts. Zen's experience with ball physics translates nicely to their latest offering, but there are some strange design decisions that make me think the project may have bumped into some obstacles along the way.

News:: Occult FPS Dusk's latest trailer is wicked

Dusk is a low-poly fever dream of shotguns and the occult. The hyper-fast retro FPS channels Doom, Quake, and other influential shooters to make something so wicked -- and goddamn fun -- that I couldn't take my hands off the keyboard during a demo at PAX East.

Publisher New Blood Interactive recently unleashed a new Dusk trailer that has me all sorts of excited for game's full release. I'd say that it hints at some of Dusk's finest features, but that would imply subtlety, and there's nothing subtle about the shooter. It's violent and snappy in all the right ways, full of enough explosions and backflips to make every action hero blush.

News:: What's the dumbest thing you've done in PUBG?

When we're left alone in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, we tend to do dumb stunts to pass the time. There have been hints of this behavior in prior D-Team episodes, but today? Today we go full-on stupid.

Not only do we pose for a family photo mid-match, but Steven and I beg Ray to stop our road trip in order to use the last of our car's gasoline for a sweet-ass jump off a crashed plane.

The best/worst part? This was one of our most successful runs to date.

News:: 'Spelunky' and 'Downwell' creators have 50 games coming this fall

Good news if you and yours have long worn out Sportsfriends' appeal -- it's been a few years, so that's understandable -- and you're hankering for another collection of unique multiplayer games. Next year, the minds behind Spelunky, Downwell, Time Barons, Skorpulac and Madhouse have teamed to bring you UFO 50. "Our goal is to combine a familiar 8-bit aesthetic with new ideas and modern game design sensibilities," the game's website reads. That purview includes platformers, puzzle games, RPGs and shooters, for a total of, you guessed it, 50 different games.

News:: Assassin's Creed: Origins won't fail your mission upon detection

Assassin's Creed: Origins's director Ashraf Ismail sat down to play a new mission with IGN in a new 18-minute gameplay video. As pointed out by Push Square, Ismail states that they are removing some frustrating aspects like auto-failing a mission whenever you are detected or when you accidentally leave the mission area.

This was one of my main gripes with Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Not only were a vast majority of the missions boring espionage or tailing objectives, requiring you to remain in blue circle, but it was so easy to accidentally leave the mission zone or get seen, forcing lots of trial and error which left the overall game experience muddled.

News:: Brain-controlled VR game hints at a hands-free future

We may be a long way off from a Holodeck-like virtual reality where your body is the controller, but Neurable might have the next closest thing. It recently unveiled a prototype peripheral that adds brain control to VR experiences. The device replaces the regular strap on an HTC Vive and uses specific brain signals (event-related potentials, not the EEG patterns you usually see) to trigger actions. In a showcase game, Awakening, you use your mind to escape a lab as if you had telekinetic powers -- you don't have to hold plastic wands as you battle robots and grab objects.

News:: Microsoft is changing the look of Xbox One again

For better or worse, it seems Microsoft will never stop fiddling with the Xbox One's user interface.

The latest refresh goes live later today for Xbox Insiders, ahead of its full launch this fall. Users will be able to customize their Home screens, and Microsoft says it has "eliminated the wait between Home, Social, and My Games and Apps by consolidating them into one dashboard experience."

There's a wordy blog post about the particulars, but I think your best bet is to see this stuff in motion.

"Updates to Home, Guide and Community are available today [for Insiders], with updates to Avatars, Game Hubs, Profiles and more coming this fall," according to Microsoft.

I'm not sure how I feel about the layout, but if it's faster and smoother, that's good enough for me.

News:: Witness eight minutes of Dynasty Warriors 9's open-world gameplay

A lot of people are getting pretty tired of the whole open-world craze and I can't say I disagree with them. With seemingly every game jumping into that format of world building, the intricate level designs and more intimate feeling that traditionally developed games exhibit might be disappearing into the past. You could also end up with something like Breath of the Wild, a game that is as divisive as it is energizing.

For Dynasty Warriors 9, though, the open-world format seems absolutely perfect. Who doesn't want to rampage through a seamless China, kicking about hundreds of thousands of soldiers at will? That you'd no longer need to sit through loading screens is just icing on the cake, since they tend to be the worst offender in any Dynasty Warriors title.

If you've been worried about how the jump to a brand new engine and gameplay style might impact the series, then let this eight minute direct feed put you at ease. It definitely looks like Dynasty Warriors, just on a much grander scale.

News:: For Honor is about to hold a free weekend

Is it too late to get into For Honor? You'll be able to decide for yourself later this week as Ubisoft holds a free weekend, opening up the campaign and multiplayer modes on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

On PC, the event will run from August 10 at 10:00am Pacific to August 13 at 1:00pm Pacific. PS4 and Xbox One players can play for free from August 10 at 12:01am PT to August 14 at 4:59pm PT. Pre-loading For Honor will be an option later tonight, albeit only for the PS4 and Uplay versions.

Why run the event now? Ubisoft is looking to build buzz for the game's third season, which starts August 15. I can't help but wonder if it would've been better to run the free weekend at the same time.

News:: Touching real-life story of a family playing Dragon Quest X animated

To celebrate the fifth anniversary of online RPG Dragon Quest X, Square Enix asked fans to submit stories about their experience with the game, which Square is going to make into animated shorts. The first, titled "The Feeling of a Name" just released.

A family is watching the in-game fireworks for the fourth anniversary of the game's launch on August 2, 2016 together. The daughter points out that it seems like everyone is celebrating Yukina's birthday, which is also August 2. Yukina is the name they gave to their created character, and in a flashback it is revealed they modeled and named their character after their other daughter who passed away.

A year later the father is seen accessing the game from a laptop in a cafe, planning a surprise for his family on the game's fifth anniversary. When they sit down for the annual in-game fireworks celebration, suddenly all of their in-game friends are wishing Yukina a happy birthday, moving her mother to tears. She would have been 15.

News:: Spelunky and Downwell creators team up for 50-game collection UFO 50

I've been not-so-patiently waiting for Aquaria and Spelunky designer Derek Yu to come out with a new game, and I'm sure many of you can say the same. In recent weeks, he's been tweeting out images of untitled 8-bit games with the hashtag #UFO50. What's that all about? This is what that's all about:

Yu is collaborating with Eirik Suhrke (Skorpulac), Jon Perry (Time Barons), Paul Hubans (Pixel Pusher), and Ojiro Fumoto (Downwell) for UFO 50, a collection of 50 games that "are slightly smaller than commercial 8-bit titles from the '80s." Based on the trailer, some look decidedly more fleshed-out than others, but the developers say they're "full games and not microgames or minigames."

"The story of UFO 50 is that the games were all created in the '80s by a fictional company that was obscure but ahead of its time," according to the group. "They're all connected by a unique 32-color palette and other restrictions we decided on to make them feel more authentic."

The other thing that has my heart singing? Every game has a single-player mode and "roughly a third of the games will feature either cooperative or competitive multiplayer modes as well."

UFO 50 is headed to "PC and other platforms(?) in 2018."

News:: Darkai is still a beast in Pokken Tournament DX

Darkai, one of the edgiest Pokemon in recent years, is coming to Pokken DX, and he'll sport the same moveset as the original Pokken.

Still, he's worth checking out mainly due to the snippets of enhanced visuals from the DX edition, which will be hitting the Switch in September (just one year and six months apart from the Wii U release, which felt like yesterday).

There's also clips of Charizard, Decidueye, and Pikachu you can peruse below if you're so inclined. As someone who was into the original I'm pretty stoked -- maybe I'll have people to play with this time!

News:: Cast your Shadow of War onto foes online!

I know for awhile there, I was worried that Middle-earth: Shadow of War was going to be a solo excursion. I mean, at every possibly opportunity, I want multiplayer modes. I especially love them in typically single-player games, because the only way to know how good I am at anything is to beat the piss out of other players.

All joking aside, Shadow of War is going to be getting a multiplayer mode when it launches this fall. While the first game sort of had asynchronous co-op with you being able to take revenge for your pals, now you can directly face off to determine who will get to bring the ring to Mordor (if only).

The main multiplayer component seems to work similar to the FOB system in Metal Gear Solid V. Dubbed Social Conquest, you can set up a base in your own game that other players can then attempt to siege with their armies. Pretty harmless stuff, even if it got to be really annoying in MGSV. You can play it directly with friends or just randoms.

The ranked variant has you actually risking your army. Should you fail, not only will your rank drop, but you'll actually suffer the casualties of war and have to rebuild. If you are successful, though, then you'll be given a plethora of rewards to help power up your character for the campaign mode (similar to how Mass Effect handled MP).

While I'm not sure if I care for shoving multiplayer into every single game, at least this sounds decent. It was cool enough in MGSV, though players eventually got so powerful that it became pointless in trying to assault them. At least a mode like this sticks to what the game is about instead of trying to radically alter the gameplay.

Now we just have to see if those microtransactions will start to screw around with the balance.

News:: Rainbow Six Siege pops 20 million registered players

Speaking on their official blog this weekend, Ubisoft announced that breach-and-clear shooter Rainbow Six Siege has passed the milestone of 20 million registered players, with around 2.3 million users playing each day.

"Our community is growing and so is our ambition to make Siege a shooter that is here to stay,” says Product Director Nicolas Lefebvre. "The next few weeks are very exciting as it marks the culmination of Operation Health."

"Operation Health" is a three-month maintenance period in which Ubisoft looked at the Siege's current state-of-play, taking time to work on bug-fixes, balance changes, server tests and the implementation of new features such as the game's recent loot box system.

The game's upcoming third season will see the door-kickers relocate to Hong Kong, bringing with it a new map, new weaponry and three new operators. The update will be arrive via a whopping patch drop (15GB for consoles and 42GB for PC) when season three begins, later this month, on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

News:: Horizon Zero Dawn's story expansion is out this November

The announcement went somewhat under the radar amid the hustle and bustle of E3, but there is a story expansion in the works for Horizon Zero Dawn. Guerrilla shared a short video of The Frozen Wilds at the show (embedded here for your convenience). Now, we have a date: November 7, 2017.

"Set in icy territories to the north, this new chapter of Aloy's journey adds a new area to explore, new mysteries to uncover and new, highly lethal machines to take on," reads the summary.

I might actually use the expansion as a chance to give Zero Dawn another serious go. I took a short hiatus partway through that ended up becoming a full-blown break. The game's been in my backlog ever since. The individual pieces are all there, and I love the premise, but it hasn't grabbed me yet.

News:: How are your Pokemon Go raids going?

This past week, I've been lucky enough to get into multiple what I call "gravy trains" for Pokemon Go raids. For those of you who don't know, up to 20 people at a time can battle a powerful Pokemon for a chance to capture them by way of  "raid battles," which pop up randomly across the world. If you so choose you can join a public room with everyone caught in the shuffle, or create private rooms with multiple groups to avoid a giant traffic jam of 100 people waiting to play. "Tier 5" raids (legendaries) just came out recently so there's a lot more people out and about.

Led by a shotcaller of epic proportions (he's nearly level 40), everything has been incredibly smooth and cordial for my wife and I. We simply divide our groups by Valor, Mystic, or Instinct, and if there's 10 or more (which is about what you need to beat a legendary, minimum), we fight them on our own (for the team bonus), or combine groups if people need help. Players who already have their quarry have even opted to join in for smaller-sized teams and forgo the catch bonus just to help.

I'm lucky, is what I'm saying. There's multiple support nets like WhatsApp and Discord groups to rely on, and so far I've bagged an Articuno and Moltres without spending entire days searching for them. Given that Zapdos is my favorite Pokemon I'll be out pretty early for it tomorrow, too!

But how is your hunt going? Have you spent all of your waking hours after work searching to no avail? Is your local raid scene even more organized than mine? Or are you still part of that lonely rural group that basically can't play at all?

"I don't play Go" is a valid response too!

News:: Review: Lone Echo

The VR space is becoming much more well-rounded. Yes, there are still a lot of terrible one-note garbage games that try to take advantage of people being desperate for something new to play, but there are also a lot more real games. Sure, they don't come out as often as traditional games, but these things take time, you know?

After Wilson's Heart, I was excited to see what Oculus Studios would publish next. Some publishers have a keen eye for quality and know what to help get out there, but others don't seem to have that filter. Thankfully, after playing Lone Echo, it's becoming apparent that Oculus Studios knows which VR developers to back because the team over at Ready at Dawn has created a quality product with Lone Echo.

News:: One amazing dad subbed in for his son in Rocket League tournament

Having played Pokemon Go's raids for the past week or so I've seen some pretty amazing parents. Moms and dads alike, out there catching Pokemon either for their kids or with them, brought a smile to a lot of the groups I was with. The same goes for this story with an eSports tint.

As part of an NBC Rocket League 2v2 tournament, Josh Russo was all suited up and ready to go with his friend, until disaster struck and he couldn't make it. But wait, a wild dad appeared, and Russo's father Nick subbed in for him to allow him to continue the match under the callsign "Actually Toxic."

Note that his dad wasn't a ringer, or at least, he didn't act like one in the impending match. Even though they lost Russo's father did score a goal, and many laughs were had all around the net and in the subsequent interviews on NBC.

The farthest my mom would go is Paperboy for the NES, so this dad has come a long way in such a short amount of time!

News:: Guile reveals grooming tips in Japanese gel advert

Having failed to cash-in on the obvious cross-promotion potential for decades, army colonel and part-time family man William Guile has given an interview revealing how he keeps his cylindrical flat-top rock-solid, even in the midst of battle.

As part of a Japanese ad campaign, Col. Guile stated that he uses the "J-Gel" range of products from cosmetic company Yanagiya. In particular, it's the "Ultra Hard" variant of the range that gives his hair that streamlined-for-flash-kicks hold.

"Disheveled hair is connected to losing one’s composure. It’s not cool." states the decorated street fighter, though he apparently failed to confirm a link between his rock-hard 'do and complete lack of eyebrows, nor why Charlie Nash became Carlos Blanka that one time.

So, the next time you want to have a head like a cornfield, are enjoying a solid day of turtling, or just fancy an 8-2 match-up vs. Ryu, you know the gloop you'll need to slop on your scalp first.
