News::GOG.com is giving away Aliens vs. Predator 2000
For 48 hours, GOG.com is giving out free copies of Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000 to people who register their email address for the GOG Galaxy beta test. Easy enough.
But what is Galaxy, exactly? It's an upcoming DRM-free online gaming platform, as previously described here. Think of Steam as imagined by the GOG.com folks, essentially.
For the beta, "You'll be helping us to analyze and improve the performance of the multiplayer component of GOG Galaxy," hence the free game with multiplayer. Note that keys will be sent in batches so there will almost certainly be some waiting required on your part.
AVP 2000 looks dated but it's possible to get past that after a while. The last time I played -- three or four years back, I think -- it held up fairly well. Still fun after all these years.

Max and I continue to grope around blindly in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel . Hear us talk about space-related camp movies, and make NBA Jam references. Then Max gets really horny about videogames. Oh, and we shoot psychopaths or whatever...

News::Play This: A Horror Game About That Uncle Who Works For Nintendo
Remember when your best friend told you he or she had an uncle who worked for Nintendo, and that's why he/she knew all about how Mario would be in the new Zelda game? Well, someone's made a game about him.

News::Has Marvel Finally Lost Its @#$%ing Mind?
Between the announcement of Captain America 3: Civil War, the cancelation of the Fantastic Four comics, and all the other Marvel madness that occurred over this past week, there was of course only one question I could lead off with. On the plus side, though, I get to talk about vampire erections. Could be worse!

News::FPS platformer Deadcore is the kind of game I want to play on Oculus Rift
Deadcore is a futuristic first-person shooter/platforming hybrid that got its start in a 7DFPS game jam in 2012 by five friends who met while studying videogame design in Angoulême, France. Extended work on the prototype was originally planned to only last three months, but continued on for the next two years -- eventually resulting in the group forming Studio 5 Bits Games; and, as we've mentioned earlier, the title being picked up by publisher Bandai Namco.
While the teaser trailer provided doesn't offer a lot of insight into how the game actually plays, it does give you a good idea of what the platforming environments will be like. While strikingly beautiful, I don't feel that the teaser does the title justice. To better illustrate what the first-person gameplay in Deadcore is like, have a look at the alpha trailer released last April and make sure to check out the latest screenshots posted in the gallery.
Deadcore feels to me like it combines some of the best aspects of the first-person gameplay from Valve's Portal titles while at the same time incorporating the acrophobia-inducing platforming featured in Coilworks' Cloudbuilt . In the short period of time that I've spent playing the game, I have to say that it's as fun as it is beautiful. If ever I wanted to play a game using the Oculus Rift, this would be it.
While the official Steam page isn't available quite yet, the studio has informed me that it should be up sometime soon and we can expect that the game will be priced around nine dollars when it launches for the PC, Mac, and Linux platforms this Friday.

It's easy enough to feel alienated as a child without also needing a prosthesis — kids can be less than kind. Which is why I love what this inventor is trying to do to make an empowering superhero prostheses come to life.

News::You can now buy eShop games on Nintendo.com
As pleasant as it is to hear Nintendo music while shopping for games digitally sometimes, you just want to get in and get out -- no fanfare needed. Here's our alternative at last.
It's now possible to buy certain 3DS and Wii U games directly from Nintendo's website. Just look for the orange "buy digital" button on the right. Not everything's supported yet -- some titles like, say, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon will still need to be bought on the eShop -- but it's progress.
After making a purchase through the website, you're able to either redeem a download code or have the game sent to whichever system is associated with your Nintendo Network ID. Digital pre-orders for titles such as Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker are also now a thing.

I can understand a Skyrim statue, and those Doom plushies were about the cutest thing ever, but the latest fruit of Bethesda's partnership with collectible maker Gaming Heads is a $300 statue of a man with a barbwire-wrapped safe spouting tentacles for a head. That's not okay.

News::XCOM, Payday 2, and eight other games are free to play on Steam this weekend
I like Steam's Free Weekend promotions in theory but I don't know that I've ever participated in one. That'll likely change tomorrow, beginning 10:00am Pacific, when 10 games become free to download and play on Steam until Sunday at 1:00pm Pacific. Here's the list:
- Awesomenauts
- Blade Symphony
- Company of Heroes 2
- Don't Starve
- Grid 2
- Injustice
- Killing Floor
- Payday 2
- Trine 2
- XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Some great games, right? I'd be curious to try out Injustice and Grid 2 as a casual player of fighting and racing games, respectively. If Awesomenauts and XCOM are out of your comfort zone, consider giving those two a try. You may just come to dig the heck out of 'em.
